What qualifies one as "self-taught"?

It seems like a lot of artists take pride in calling themselves "self taught", but I don't really understand what that implies lol;
Doesn't that just mean you don't trace/copy someone else's style?
Isn't that what people are supposed to do anyways? * . *;

If it's not that, the only other thing I can think of is the lack of formal artclassing. Imo that's more of a deprivation than a benefit. I'd be more mad at myself/theworld for not having that opportunity than being proud of training myself to "overcome" in any stretch.

Yeah I've taken art classes, but my teachers don't draw on my pictures for me. I'm still doing the bulk of the work. They give me suggestions I hate listening to, and give assignments that I hate too lol. But they're also providing mediums, materials, and different viewpoints with said assignments; opportunities one must soak up and greedily run away with.
Hell I don't think I would've gone very far with

my "self teaching", had I not gotten my money's worth out of our art department.

It just depends how well you use your resources. I'm sure there are plenty of artists who've gone through countless classes and gasp, art college, without learning a cent.
So don't diss on us art class takers. we still have to work too :I

This comes as a complete shock to me. Although I was only acquainted with him, he's one of those people who leads the crowd. Always on time, always organized, he's the leader figure. Also pretty laid back and easy going type.

Gaia Auction + Ramblings

2. I've been trying to expose myself to fanfictions to get a feel for what fandom people do besides draw, but I'm having a LOT of trouble with my pet peves lol;
instead of discovering something fun, I'm more or less being mortified and returning in my shell

I've found that one of the most annoying things I consistently find when I try is when writers refer to the characters in the fic by their hair color or occupation....thoughout the whole thing
Like for example: "The blonde" or "The redhead" or "the assassin"
even after they've established who the character was, they just keep refering to them with such vague and repetative nicknames. 8I
we know who they are why can't we just use their real names hrnmmgggkadfhakf

Does anyone else have this pet peve too? Is it really as common as I find it or am I just very unlucky? help me...somehow

3. UH for those of you who I owe commissions/collabs to. Know that I haven't forgotten, I'm just really

SO I really wanted to open commissions
But I wont be able to start on them until after wednesday since I'm taking the PSAT test on that day and I should most likely be studying (its like a sat practice try)

SO UH.

Hrmg lately (like in the last year or so) I've grown to find hetero couples kissing as something revolting. 8I
har har I know in my comic so far they're like kissing every page, but OVERALL besides those two of my ocs and maybe viral/adiane, a boy and a girl making out just grosses me out.
Like, just simple kissing isn't that bad; it can be kinda cute. but only for

and I would love to do it again this year! Yes it is early. I started in mid August last time I do believe. WARNING WALL OF TEXT

Basic Rundown

The SS I'm hosting is a "Doubled Up" SS of all super complicatedness. Everyone will be asigned two people whom they will be the Secret Santa of. (and in turn, you will have two Secret Santas as well!) This is to try to ensure everyone gets at least SOMETHING, in the event that someone backs out or is unable to participate. If both of your Santas back out on you, I will personally take the time to make you one kickass gift.

Applications are to be noted to me. Take in mind that this is a selective SS. Originally, last year I only sent out private invites and never gave the opportunity for people to just sign up. Don't feel bad if you're not selected, it's nothing too personal. I base my selection on a combination of technical skill, easy-going/willing to cooperate personality, and responsibility. Yes, it does help if I've known you for a while.

Once I get confirmation on all the reinvites, and the applications, I will begin the long and ridiculously tedious process of collecting wishlist journals and assigning people.

Hopefully I will have assignments arranged before the middle of October, giving members approximately 2 months to complete their gifts. The faster I get responses from everyone, the faster I can set this up.

I will send you at least 2 reminders to get your gifts done. (one at mid way point, and another a week before in case you are just really good with your deadlines)

Everyone will restrain themselves from posting their gifts and delivering them until December 24th. (For novelty sake, I'm not religious personally) And we will have a mountain of fun

Rules + Regulation

I, Kafai, am not going to be part of the assignments. This is because I feel it is unfair knowing what is going to happen, and I don't want to put that much pressure on the poor victims who would've been assigned to me. I'm just the backup artist incase something goes wrong. Don't let me down guys, as much as I love you, I really would not like to make 30+ paintings for everyone.

The characters in your wishlist must be ORIGINAL CHARACTERS.

You may not apply unless you are watching me. No, it's not because I want more watches, it's so I don't have "floater" users from out of nowhere signing up. And it will be easier for me to send out journal updates.

If you're not invited or accepted, that is that. I can't make it any clearer for you; it tears me appart to have to pick and choose but the selection is the basis for integrity in this event. Please. If there is anything I don't want you to do, do not beg. It will break my heart to have to ignore you.

Don't. In all seriousness. Do Not Draw Me Gifts To Try To Get An Invite. This will make it all the more awful when I turn you down. If I think you're fit to be in, you won't have to do any of that. Flattery + Bribes = dislike

If for any reason you find you have to back out, tell me asap. Then I can make arrangements to compensate everyone else.

Do NOT sign up just to back out last minute. I will punch you in the gut. And I'm sure anyone who wasn't selected would do the same. I can tell the difference. You would've had 2 months to come up with SOMETHING.

If you need anything (critique, anonymous comunication with your assignees, etc) I can provide that. It's what I'm here for.

Be considerate to the people you are gifting to and everyone else.

The minimum expectation is at least a halfbody, colored, piece for each of your assignees. Though, a fullbody colored would be strongly recomenged I say this now so we don't have headshot sketches from one person, and full blown cg + background from the n...

So! In the next year sometime in the summer I might be able to go out of town for a big convention FINALLY!
And for such a big event I wanted to be able to have a decent cosplay as it is a very special occasion. (I will most likely not be able to attend any other large out of state cons until college) SO. GUESS WHAT. I'M GONNA MAKE MYSELF A FUCKING ADIANE COSPLAY.

But I fail at knowing were to go for cosplay supplies (like wigs/contacts)

So for those of you who make your own cosplays, where do you usually get you wigs? I've been searching on Ebay and found one that I thought would work really nicely

SO next week I'm going to be very very depressed and bored since my buds, ~Plusook and ~ZyuruChan will be out of town. I'll have a decent amount of freetime...
I was thinking I'd take some plushie commissions? When school pulls around I'll have to buckle down and FOCUS FOCUS FOCUS RAGH so many AP/Honors classess...

Mini Keychain Plushes
-Body+head measure approximately 4.5 Inches (little smaller than the size of a standard index card)
-Comes with a chain + ring
-Body is made of flannel
-Hair is generally made of craft felt (Unless I don't have the right color, then I might use fleece or something else)
-Some hair may be painted for variety of shades
-Clothes are painted on with acrylics
-Faces are painted on with acrylics
-They don't have regular human ears lol; (it looks really really silly)
-Animal ears can be added
-they are NOT MACHINE WASHABLE. Don't do it.
I have not tried making miniature clothing for them as of yet.

Keep in mind that I may reject a plushie commission if the character's complexity is too demanding for the plushie base.

Pricing:
Naked plush = $15 + $3 for shipping

Clothing: If you want me to make miniature clothing...we can discuss it. It will most likely be made from thin cotton fabric and be hand stitched (felt/fleece ends up being too thick for the size)
I can make simple pants, and all shirts have mini buttons so they can be removable lol;

I was/am in a rather foul mood. As I was every time I woke up in the last 3 days.
Saic is wonderful, no lie. I just get so pissed because I get online and become sorely disappointed. I was going to make a giant rant, but changed my mind because nobody wants to hear it. (no not because I'm emo and think nobody cares, because I'm just incredibly bitchy about some of it and I'm sure it'd upset some peeps)

So basically
Today I took a nap and when I got up, I got online and found someone making butchered up copy cats of my kechain plushies.

yesterday morning I got up
I realized
most of my fandom friends from deathnote had become hetalia obsessed. Every time I see something hetalia related in my message center I get really annoyed. Its been like this for months. and I finally decided I had enough.
So I've unwatched quite a few of you guys. Hate to say it, but I'm not really all that sorry. You don't have to "change yourself" for me or whatever. I'm alright with coexisting separately.

Friday I pretty much told that commissioner (who never paid) to go fuck their money. The paypal case was "resolved". I didn't get anything back, and then they billed and additional $10 for "investigation fees". So I told them about that and how I thought it was ridiculous for me to have to wait so long for them to pay me. I'm not entirely in the right about it I know, but they basically said it was all my fault for not contacting her earlier through subeta instead of emailing her. (note that she never posted on the subeta forums after she made her request thread, and I also sent her a message delivering the picture which she had not replied to)
I know I should've been more persistent with sending them subeta messages, but did I really need to go through this whole bank reversal shit on their part?
Oh well. So conclusively, I've taken down the deviation. Might edit it so the character is different, then repost later.

I'm not going to be taking any more illustration commissions for a long while because my parents want me to focus on school.
I wont be attending any more cons until I take my SATs/ACTs

IDK. I -might- go on haitus for a while. I'll probably upload all the stuff I've been making here in chicago.
then after I get back...I dunno...I might feel better by then and just turbo charge into drawing again. Maybe work more on my story boarding for GX.

Oh, and for you nice people out there that haven't been completely turned off by my above ramblings, I've got a really silly story for you. So me and ~Plusook have been rooming here. and last night we stayed up waaay too late. then plu started drawing these really grotesque animal faces XD;
and we decided to write messages and go out and post them on people's doors.
Our floor is 6, and the two floors surrounding us (5 + 7) are boys XD;
the only two boy floors in the 15 floor building. but we heard lately there was a lot of drama between the girls who liked the same guys (dude man, its only 2 weeks). So we didn't want to risk getting beat up by girls so we decided to do the 4 surrounding floors, 4, 5, 7, 8. oh man I should go get pictures right now.
BACK: ohman, someone caught us on the 7th floor and the 4th floor LOL. 4th was a girl so it was a'ight. We got away because I clicked the down button for the elevator and she clicked the up. (then the elevator came going up) and we were successful in trying to take more pictures on that floor. But on the 7th floor this guy from my painting class walked out of the elevator as we were taking pictures LOL. and then he headed into the part of the hallway we didn't get to yet and saw us. fggg

IDK this journal is getting pointless now. I'll just stop typing.

fffg firstooff I'm sorry for not replying very much lately, I've been rather on the move/running about and haven't had motivation to reply either.

anyhoo. while I'm here in Chicago, I was thinking that I could possibly take traditional painting commissions!
(there are art supply stores relatively close by, and its just convenient in general)

They would be done in oil paints on 9"x12" canvas board
(they will not be shipped right away though because I need to figure out pricing for that, once I do I'll ask you to pay the additional shipping fee) it should be somewhere around $5-$10 for shipping

there are like 3 things bothering me
1. My lack of variation
2. All the people I keep finding who are young and talented or just hells better than me
3. Lack of detail work or something

1. I noticed that there are certain elements that I like drawing in poses more than others, but I never thought they actually showed in my gallery because most of it stayed in my sketchbooks. But like. I just went through and counted all my pictures with feet pointed up a forward like this:

there were like. 18 of them OTL (and its almost always the left foot)

and don't get me started on all the hands that rest on people's left hips like this:

I feel like I repeat hand poses a lot in general too
why can't I draw nice hands like you *inflect ; ; (her hands are SO SO NICE MY GOD)
they actually looks like boy hands whereas mine are all "LOL LADY FINGERS"

and then, all my body types are the same OTL every time I exaggerate I keep making "corrections" until I realize its the same again.

and then my face angles/directions OTLOTLOTL

I apologize for ranting on, but sometimes...well very often I feel unoriginal.

2. I watch freakin 500+ people who are amazing. SHUSH YOU. I don't care how good you think I am, I'll always think these people are good. [link]
I watch maybe 10-20 people who don't do digital paintings/drawings. (like pixelists, friends from school, crafty people, stock people, dev clubs, etc). and that's it. everyone else is COMPETITION. (not that pixelists and craft people arn't competition for me as well, I just focus more on drawings)

I think my problem is when I was really bad at drawing, I always thought everyone better than me were the 'good' people. But now that I've gotten better, you'd think my standards would've gone up right? Well they didn't = A =;
I still think all the people before are still x10 ahead of me.

Anyone who can finish a digital fullbody character (decently), even if its just one picture, I see as competition.

since my sister started drawing back when we were 4/8. But I didn't start like CG anything until I was...12? or 11? One of the two. (I was awful LOL)

âWhich hand do you use for drawing?
Right! sometimes I try with my left and fail...same goes for throwing things during gym lol.

âWhich is easier to draw - male or female?
Female has always been "easier" for me, but I'd enjoy it better if I was good at drawing men LOL. I go on random periods of only drawing one gender and then I forget how to draw the other. So it switches off sometimes.

âWhich is easier to draw - long hair or short hair?
Spiky short hair is hard for me to color/draw lol; but like strait off short hair isn't that bad. Long hair is fun to draw, but only when I'm in the mood to. (cus then I can make cool folds and stuff, but when I'm lazy it looks awful flat)

âIs it easier to draw the head facing towards the right or the left?
Facing to the left, you have no idea. It's awful when I try drawing to the right without being able to flip the image to cheat LOL;

âIs it easier to draw the side view of the face or the front view?

I can't get noses from the front shaded very well lol;
and then my eyes don't end up very...lined up right lol;
but I love love love sideviews, I just never do them since I'm always making commissions and commission people don't want sideviews. (I'm also awful at headshapes/cheeks/chins so sideviews kind of give me a break from that)

hrmm...sensible poses lol; I have a hard time coming up with a pose that works with a background/makes sense. and then like I said earlier, I'm bad with face shapes. really need to work on them more.

Both? I like painting irl and digitally. With traditional stuff though, its usually just pencil sketches or paintings from observational things.

Hrm...well
when I'm making something out of the blue it usually looks like the same thing over and over again lol; (its like my auto pilot drawing)
then I usually start with the upper arch of the eye and the nose and maybe the circle of the head

when I'm trying to make something good, it's usually better when I start with the legs (especially on women) and work from there.

âWhat is your drawing habit that you are aware of?
I draw the same thing...over and over OTL
or like something similar, when I want to draw but have nothing to draw.
I'm also very impatient, so I finish things very fast. that can be good and bad.

âAny tips for coloring/shading?
Check my resources collection in my favs for stock/tutorials I've found useful lol
but uhhh, I use a lot of overlay. like alot
to make color schemes. But after I have my colors down, I usually just use what is off the painting for the rest instead of constantly picking new colors.

God damn it. I'm really pissed off right now.
I just got an email that told me one of my commissioners retracted their payment on paypal through their bank account, and any action taken by the bank couldn't be monitored by paypal itself.
there were three options I could pick to resolve the claim

-accept the "refund"
-Provide proof of shipping
-Provide proof of previous refund

previous refund requires a transaction number
and shipping requires a tracking code

I didn't even know you could do that. IT BE INCREDIBLY HELPFUL FOR ME SINCE ANOTHER PERSON ON EBAY NEVER SHIPPED MY ORDER. But it wont let me do that through paypal alone. (I ordered a display for my table at natsu con, its been over 25 days and we still haven't received it)

But anyways. If this commissioner denies commissioning this piece from me, it becomes my new OC and I'll go ahead and sell prints of it at natsucon.

From now on I guess I'll have to give all my commissioners prints of their pieces so I have that tracking code. OR JUST NOT TAKE COMMISSIONS AT ALL.

So my parents already paid $1600 in the remaining tuition/housing costs for my Chicago summer program at Saic, and all I have to pay for is supplies and food. Simple right?

Plushie Dilemma
so like, I've had this plushie commission for forever that I still haven't finished yet for . And I decided to make a duplicate so I could practice using the sewing machine (the other one was completely hand stitched)
and that one turned out pretty nicely so I was planning on sending it to her, but when I put on the face (ohlol) I smeared some of the paint. and then I tired to wash that bit off, but the rest wasn't dry yet to the paint went EVERYWHERE
then I panicked and dunked the whole thing in water with lots of soap XD

but my dad helped me put it in the washing machine. (and didn't put it in the dryer since I asked him not to)
and poof! it wasn't dead like I though it would be
save for a little acrylic stain still XD;

but yeah, now I figured out that my plushies are indeed machine washable :I
or at least, the ones without hair LOL;
i don't think that'll work too good if I threw hitsugaya in the wash.

I will go back to finishing the original plushie now.
no paint for the face this time lol;

LOL so like I'm a total clover dork.
I guess many of you wouldn't know that since I never said it before.

3-4 years ago, in the middle of the summer: I was outside and running around with some neighborhood kids. And we decided to look for 4 leave clovers. and well, apparently in my next door neighbor's back yard there was a patch full of 4 leave clovers right next to the fence. So I sat there every day for almost a week picking 4 leaf clovers. It was pretty amazing, I ended up with 4 zip-lock sandwich bags full of them. and so I decided to attempt to keep them by pressing them between paper in books. But I didn't have enough time for all of them so I got a few pressed, and then kept the rest in the bags. I added some water to those bags because I thought it'd keep them green. That didn't really work all too good ha ha. The ones left in the bags began rotting in 2 days and I had to throw them all away. But the ones that I did press, I taped to a poster board. I counted earlier and there were like 45ish of them still there. (and that was only half of one bag ha ha)

Since then my neighbors have run over that spot countless times with a lawn mower and I have been unable to find anymore

But recently I was inspired to go 4-clover hunting again because of 's luck contest. So over at 's house we were sitting in the backyard and I ran about looking for them lol. I found 2 patched with 4 leaf clovers, one only have like 5 while the other had like 30+
so I thought that was cool. I took them home, dried them, and laminated them c:

In the old batch, there was 1 clover with 5 leaves. In the new batch there are 6 with 5 leaves, and 1 with 6 leaves
no lie, they're real.

I'm thinking of cutting them out and putting them on keychains (like draa did)

Q: What kind of art program to you used?
A: It really depends on the picture(s), sometimes I like to experiment and play around with different programs. Usually though, I use a combination of Photoshop 7.0 and Sai. [link]
I also use corel painter, open canvas 1.1, open canvas 4.5, and some oekaki programs

Q:What is Oekaki?
A: It's like an online application that can be found on "oekaki board" websites. The sites work kind of like forums with pictures. The oekaki program itself is on the website, which you can use to draw. Different oekakis have their own rules and terms of use. Be sure to read those before joining.

Q:Which oekaki do you draw on?

if something in my gallery isn't on there, usually I'll post where it was.

Q: Which is your favorite oekaki program?
A: Shi painter animated. I don't like shi painter pro.

Q: What do you use to make your little charms/sculptures?
A: Generally I use Sculpey clay, I like it because you can just bake it in your oven and it's generally easy to work with. Sometimes I use colored clay, sometimes I just paint on top with acrylics.

Q: What kind of glaze do you use?
A: It's just regular sculpey glaze. "studio glossy glaze"

Q:How old were you when you started drawing?
A:Since I was 5 I always had an interest in drawing, but not until I was 12-13 did I really start seriously trying to improve XD

Mandy got sick/dehydrated/something, fell/fainted after an outdoor show, threw up in the bathroom, and ran off the stage in the indoor show.

I'm in quite a bit of a fowl mood so I'll try not to stay online too long to piss off more people.

You know, some people have no respect at all for the dead. It really pisses me off.

Excuse me: rant

So today we started watching this documentary about the holocaust. I've actually been looking forward to it because I love learning about the holocaust. I can never get enough, because it's like something so terrible you just can't look away. You HAVE to learn every face and every story, because it's the least you can do. It's obligatory.

So it took forever to set up the video because there was a substitute that had no idea what to do and the 3-4 students who were trying to get it to work were to arrogant to admit that what they were doing was wrong so they kept blaming it on the projector/computer/or vhs. So the whole class was a little routy and unsettled
but after they finally got it to work, everyone was STILL talking about whatever bullshit.

I even saw some of the boys laughing at one of the female survivors because she had "weird hair" or some shit while she was talking about her dead sister.

so this went on for about 15 minutes before I finally just said across the room "God. People need to SHUT UP"
there was a small burst of laughter and then afterwards most everyone was silent.

But GOD. The holocaust is such an absolutely terrible period in history. If that was my family, my brother, my sister, my mother, who had to go through that living hell of the Ghettos, Gestapos, and Auschwitz: the whole fucking world better stop at the word "holocaust" in respect.

And this happened to millions of people. Millions.

I wish people would take their heads out of their own asses and attempt to listen without spitting out so much bullshit to others.

Edit: AND DON'T ANYONE DARE TELL ME THERE WAS NEVER A HOLOCAUST. If you're some neo nazi or holocaust denier, UNWATCH ME NOW. Fucking shit, nobody could ever stick their heads farther up their asses.

to break away a little from all the chibis I've been drawing lately XD;

sooo sick of making keychains

So my idea was go to through my massive collection of favs and pic out a few pictures to make paintings based off of :I Mostly things with scenery, so I could draw the scene from another angle and incorporate characters.

I saw several booths around the astl con with these kind of displays made of metal wirelooking stuff. (and I saw some people taking them apart during cleanup so I know that they are all in little square sheets like that)
When I came home to search it, I couldn't think of what they were called at all XD;
It doesn't seem like something that hard to find.

I really want to get some of those panels for a display if I'm going to any more cons
That way, I can chain things down so they don't keep falling all over the place XD;
