Remember, put the CF card into your camera and format it. Then make sure you have a FULL batter in the camera.

Nikon D5000 is here. Ugly name. Ugly camera. Nice features.

I would not recommend it. Simply because it has only 1 command dial, making it difficult to operate in manual mode. The inability to operate it easily in manual is the biggest reason I cant see serious amateurs using it.

Just to add my opinion on all the rumors, here we go.

D300 is next in line to be replaced. Guessing mid to late summer. It will NOT be FX. It will probably be 14.X, maybe low 15 MP. Then late in the year the D700X will drop with a D3x sensor in a body that has been hampered in other ways so as to not quite directly compete with the D3x.

The D100/D200/D300 line will remain DX indefinitely. The D700/D700X line will be the FX pro backup bodies.

I must say, this is purely speculation, but I'd guess the D3x will be hot on its heels. Not announced QUITE yet, so as to not take too my hype away from the D700. But Nikon has been having leaks, and practically announced it in the firmware leak for the D3, but also Sony and Nikon have a history of working together. So Id guess Nikon isn't too far behind.

I'm thinking I'm not even going to go below ISO 1600, and probably will just use 3,200 for the entire concert. I greatly prefer using the natural (if you can call it that) lighting of the concert rather than a flash. But I'm bringing the 800 just in case I need a flash that will really perform in a pinch.

Also I need to get a D700 soon. I could really do with some nice low light capabilities. 3,200 is great, but I tend to max out my D200 on a far too consistent basis.

Sick to the point where I was unable to keep up with things. For a while unable to use my hands and barely able to walk. I was recovering, relapsed, and now I'm recovering well.
Also, my last computer died, so I had to get a new one. I took that as an opportunity to abandon windows and get a mac. Which I must say, I love.
In other news, Im back in school. Photojournalism major. So far my experience with that is that Im getting the nod fro my professors and they're supporting me in seeing what I come up with. Like in one class, we were all supposed to use 35mm film and 50mm lenses. My prof told me I could use any lens I want, and even my Mamiya to shoot 120 film. So I'm busting out my arsenal of lenses and the medium format and going crazy. I love it. Its nice to get encouragement.
I also got a shoot with this laday, doing school portraits for kindergarten and first grade, which I am really excited for because its a good opportunity, and will pay well. Which I need right now since Ive been out of commission for so long.

Bayer Interpolation pisses me off when I look at a digital picture and then at a negative. Wonderful algorithm. And thank god for digital imaging but if we can produce 24 mega pixel sensors now, why isnt someone making 8mp faveon sensors? I'd just about have a photographic orgasm. And if you do it like sigma did it, you could always turn it to use the Bayer interpolation and get 24 mp out of it anyways.

Ok, I'm gonna explain Bayer Interpolation and Faveon sensors.

Bayer Interpolation in a nutshell is how your camera gets its red green and blue values for every pixel.
Basically each receptor can only capture one of the colors. So that receptor shares its value using a complex algorithm with the adjacent pixels as the image is being processed so that every single pixel has all three of the colors. Generally receptors are laid out in a pattern like this:

[G][R]
If you cant figure out what the letters stand for, then.... -_-
Anyways, Faveon sensors on the other hand use 3 receptors PER PIXEL. So there is no sharing with adjacent pixels and therefore no bleeding of colors or anything. The flip side is that it only has 1/3 of the pixel count in the final image. I've seen a couple Sigma cameras though where you can shoot with a value for every pixel OR switch to using the Bayer Interpolation. I think its the best of both worlds, and with the new beasts in the Canon, Nikon, and Sony lines being 20+ mp, I see no reason why Faveon sensors wouldnt be the way to go. 24mp normal mode, 8mp faveon would be sweet.

My birthday party was today, and it was tons of fun! I got to see a few people I haven't seen in a long time. Also, I remembered how incredibly fun mountain boarding is.
Only drawback is I have a scrape on my left arm and apparently on my torso a little worse so, from mountain boarding, but it is so worth it. And I figured out that my nose is in fact broken, so I had to pop it back, and that sounded REALLY gross, I kinda gagged. Its feeling a little better now though.
I really want to go visit Mia and Tristan now though, and go shooting at Mare Island. Sounds so fun.
*thinking hard* What else is new? I dunno. Framed a bunch of prints. Framing more soon. Got back in touch with someone I hadn't realized I had been missing, but I had been I. *coughCaitlincough*
I was slightly bummed Dani didnt show today though, but I'm hoping she and I can go ice skating Monday now.

So my birthday was awesome. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you Thomas and Dani for coming over. The party is this Saturday, and I'm greatly looking forward to that as well. Especially since Mia is coming.

Also, I've yet to develop my first roll. In fact I've shot 2 of 12 shots on my first roll of medium format, but first thing I did was take apart and clean the entire camera, and get an understanding of the mechanics in it. Its a super simple beast, but super fascinating.

I also felt like drawing up a sensor size comparison chart, so here you go.

A friend just asked me when I think Ill peak.
My hope is that I keep learning every day of my life. Which would mean I'm currently at my peak, and will remain there for the rest of my life.
That is my goal.

Lately, Ive been learning about medium and large format film cameras, about scans, and watching Sony and Nikon work together to make a very aggressive move towards edging Canon out of the market. I would have cared 2 months ago. I would have cared 1 month ago. Hell, I would have cared 2 weeks ago.

But what for?

As a photographer my duty is to take pictures. Not drool over equipment. I even plan on investing in some of the new equipment produced in what I refer to as the War Against Canon, but its got to be in perspective. Don't count your eggs before they've hatched. And moreover, SHOOT! Don't get hung up on caring too much about who's doing what like I was for a bit.

So people, whatever your art is, just do it. It doesn't matter what you do or don't have. I remember reading a journal by =Pelicanh where he said he did a whole shoot with disposable cameras because he had problems with his equipment.

I think now my rule is this. Upgrade equipment when old equipment begins to wear, and upgrade to the equipment that best facilitates the creative drive in me. If its new and awesome, ok, if its old and quirky, ok. I was looking into some old Kodak 12mp FF DSLRs the other day. Talk about good image quality at a low price. Best part is there are 2 models, one takes a Nikon mount, one takes a Canon mount.

Who knows what I will get though. My poor D200 has been looking ragged on the body. For every hike I post pictures from, I have done 5 more. So its been in the elements, and getting dragged to the outskirts of our world. And what it doesn't know is Ive only been doing the easy hikes. If I can make it down and it is still the same day, its one of the easy hikes. Hopefully some time soon I will get to try some significantly longer hikes. Its what I need to do.

What if we woke up tomorrow, and instead of ads on TV, there was propaganda encouraging everyone to question any force that oppresses them, whether its work or government or any other force. And more propaganda encouraging people to better themselves in many different aspects of life.

And the US stopped fighting on every continent...well, were not fighting in Antarctica but there isn't anything to fight down there anyways. But instead of fighting, that money was invested into new factories, and cleaning up the run down neighborhoods. And money was spent in outreach to get people into good physical condition. Then gear those factories i just mentioned up to produce food. And vehicles, air and land and sea vehicles. LOTS of them, with large cargo capacities. Fill up those factories and create more farm. Hell, I don't know enough about the way the economy works to think of every type of facility we need, but make more of everything here on US soil. Make the #1 goal lifting our economy up through hard work. To the point of overproduction. Then once the US had so much food and so many resources, take care of other nation.

Why lead through military power when you could lead by example? Being a bully causes resentment, but if you come along and pick up the person what had been bullied, it creates fierce loyalty.

And slowly but surely it could spread from nation to nation. The overthrow of oppressive governments and the slow progress towards providing every living person with a high standard of living. Right now in my opinion the world is grossly overpopulated, not because we cant handle it, but because politically we cant get along enough on this small planet.

Tonight the sunset was pastel. Pink, orange, red, blue. It was amazing.

I must say, I don't think it can get much better than living on a ranch, for me.

I was helping my father build a green house, and then while driving the tractor back to the barn, I watched sheep running down a hill and our two cats hunting some unknown prey. All the while I can feel my hair blowing in the wind.

I feel like everywhere I look, everywhere I go on the ranch stimulates my senses. It makes me feel alive.

I guess I'm a nature addict.

This is entirely speculation.

BUT!

Edit: Taken from the amazon.com listing of the D3. "Designed with sports photographers and photojournalists in mind..."

Nikon made its debut with full frame in the D3. And if history repeats, then they released the higher speed lower resolution model first. D1 series went like that. D2 series (there wasnt a D2, but it followed a similar trend) went fast then high res. And usually the faster models (H models) are about 1/2 the resolution of the high resolution models (X models).

So pending the D3 is the H model OR if Nikon releases H and X models of the D3, then there is reason to believe it will be around the 24 mp area. Take the concentration of the D300's pixels on a sensor the size of the D3, and you would have a roughly 26 megapixel camera, so 24 being double the H or else stock 3rd gen model, is well within reach of Nikon's current technology.

I'm very intrigued to see what happens.

And I'm going to start investing in full frame lenses. Yay for Nikon being able to use them on FF and sub FF bodies.

Ive realized I'm in love.

When I reached the summit of Oat Hill the first time, it was one of the most fulfilling feelings I have ever felt. Second time, same thing. Its strange. I feel like I am in love, but its completely free, there is no need to grasp or own it. It fills my soul. And not just at Oat Hill. Its connected to me doing photography, and me hiking, but I don't understand / cant comprehend the relationship between the love and those two things yet. I don't really care though.

I feel like it is beginning to permeate into my interpersonal relationships as well. Like I don't feel this need to posses or claim someone. I feel like I can just love without worry of acceptance or rejection of the love.

And ultimately, I think and feel that this means one thing. This is what I need to do. This is the right thing for me.

Maybe with why I'm tired but have never felt so good.

I hiked 5 miles up, 5 miles down. Gaining 4,000 feet from base to summit. And took photographs the whole way. I'm never going to forget my backup 4gb card again. If I hadn't been rushing on the way back to try to get off the mountain before sun down I would have definitely needed it.

There is something I love about seeking out the gorgeous places in nature. And this place was the most beautiful place I have ever been to.

Something about sitting on a rock outcropping, hundreds of feet above the hill below. Something about studying the ruts cut into rock from wagon wheels and knowing that I was standing on the ground where Black Bart made 2 of his heists. Something about being able to look out and see the curvature of the earth. Something about those experiences move me.

Just guesstimating, Ill have 15ish photos that I pull out of the 4gb I shot today. But they will make all the soreness of the legs and feet beyond worth it.

I can't wait to go back. I'm shooting for in 2 to 3 days.

I was chilling, working on my chainmaille belt, and looking over at my camera, and thought hey, why dont I take a shot of myself. I wonder how strong my flash really is. So I pop the diffusion dome on (its an SB-800 btw) put the camera on timer, walk over, and BAM! I still have a nice rectangle in my vision. Now I feel bad for the people I shoot with it.

I would just LOVE to have it. Open to the public. Just everything Nikon and all the information I could collect on the stuff I have. I think I'm going to start collecting the old stuff I can get my hands on.

Plus hell, its Nikon, so if its nice I can use it. I have no qualms about using antiquated lenses and such on my new body. I dunno, I really dont think they should be treated as obsolete. Granted they are different and many new lenses have certain advantages, but every lens brings something different to the table. And sometimes I like that.

So I checked my inbox of deviations today and every single one had something in common. Snow. I really really love snow. And I really really think I need to go somewhere now because of that. It has barely even frosted here yet. I'm still walking around in a T-shirt. As great as the weather is, I would love to see some snow this holiday season. I can count the number of times Ive been to the snow on one hand.

In other news, I have a new job, and I love it! Its this IT place SonomaIT. We do everything from web applications to sites to computer hardware and servers. Pays well and takes good care of the employees and all that jazz, but here is the coolest part of all: Ive been coming home and my brain has been so inspired Ive been having trouble falling asleep and when I wake up I just feel electrified like I need to produce things. Not just art, but the common thread is its all creative. Friday they told me they want to teach me some new systems and such, and they are very happy with how I work and how I fit in at the place. Granted anything could happen, but I really hope it goes well because I wouldnt mind working here for a long time. And Im even getting a huge lesson in design. Personally I think my design abilities are improving ten fold. Very soon I have a new layout for my photography site I will be unleashing and I think it makes my current layout look like a 4th grader did it.

Oh, and gotta love goodwill. I swear, there are no coincidences. A friend of mine randomly went there the other day, and mind you he doesn't go there hardly, and buys a lens for me because he saw it for $4. Turns out I already have the lens, but its also one of my favorite lenses. Nikkor F/1.4 50mm. *Poohblah has one too, and concurs its hard to get the photos to be crisp as often as we would like, but I think thats simply because with a f/1.4 the urge to shoot wide open is great but it destroys the depth of field.

Which reminds me, Im seriously considering getting a lensbabie. Selective focus lenses seem pretty cool. Novelty item Id say, much like a fisheye has very few if any practical applications but I am so glad I have one of those. I might have to get the Nikkor 10.5mm fisheye some time in the first months of the new year though. 180 degrees field of view....made for sub full frame, so it would work as its intended on my D200. I could have a lot of fun with that.

Oh yeah, and models. ~Anyutka is coming down the day after Christmas from Toronto, so Im going to show her around San Francisco for a few days and after that show her Sonoma County. Do expect some pictures of a gorgeous lady. Ive been wanting to shoot some more people, but I'm a little weird about shooting people. Ive probably turned down more people than I should, but hey, when I do shoot people its just right and its not like I have to be shooting people for any reason so whatever. But yes, the person who is at the top of the list of people I would love to shoot happens to be coming into town (Im still talking about Anya) so Ill be damned if I don't run off a lot of pictures.

So if you haven't seen Office Space, I like it. Ive seen it a few times, the most recent time tonight.

And you know what, I understand Peter Gibbins.

Except, whereas he doesn't want to do anything, I just don't want to do most things.

Like, I really want to fly. And I really want to do photography. And on the side, I am more than happy to make some websites. But since it seems like to pursue the big money I would have to take things to an extreme I don't feel like taking them to, I think I would much rather take things comfortably and just have fun in this life. Why the hell not? You know, every day I'm not applying to flight schools or learning shit or working on a website, I'm sort of spinning my wheels if I looked at things like I used to.

BUT

Tomorrow I'm heading down to San Fran with Roman and were going to stay in a hostel. Were going to check out tons of things, and chill and just explore the city. And that going to be awesome. Life experiences. He also made me promise to come visit him in Germany. How could I argue, I've been wanting to get out there for a while anyways.

I mean, why do we judge things based on careers and money?

If I pursue life experiences in the things I love, when I die Ill be the richest man alive in my own eyes.

I think I'm slowly driving myself insane. I keep having these dreams. They practically dont need to be put into the plural though. In almost all of them I'm holding this lady's hand and I can see her face. When I wake up I have this incredibly overwhelming sadness because I cant find her. And as hard as I might try to think of something else, to stop that thought process from becoming too deeply ingrained in my brain, it doesn't stop. For once I'm annoyed that there is more to being human than just a mind working in the vacuum of space. And in dreams, there is the whole aspect of something might not look right or be right but somehow you can sense what it really is or what it represents.
I know who she is. But that doesn't seem to help me at all. A relic from the past. And not by choice.

I love winter.

Except now, I really appreciate sunlight. I always look forward to winters, I just wish I had more time outside during the short daylight hours.

Oh, and Im not even going to go over my list of things to do. Ive got 2 people I really wish to call and another to get a hold of in pretty much any way possible, and haven't even gotten to that yet. Working+working+developing an application. Lets see, spare time? Whats that? lol.

Hopefully Sunday Ill be out and about. Which, and this is the reason I say hopefully, coincides with one of the people I wish to call but have been dragging my ass about calling. On the one hand I say its a phone call, it cant take long, on the other hand I hate rushing phone calls because I love to chat.

But you know, work will pay off. Especially when I finish the application (web application to be more precise), because then I will be able to use it to generate money for myself. I think it is the future for me in the business world.

Now I enter a quandary.

Option 1: Save up and buy a D300, use my D200 as a backup body.

Option 2: Sell the D200, use the money and then a little to buy the D300.

Option 3: Don't do anything soon, save up a good while and get a D3.

I dunno. I kind of want to wait for something above 12 megapixels, even though Im only rocking 10 right now. 15-16 woulda made me snatch one up like it was going out of style, but as much as I am currently drooling over the D3 and D300, its not quite amazing enough to make me completely ignore the price and stop to evaluate how worth it it really is or isn't. Its about bloody time Nikon released a new thing though. And DAMN is it beautiful.
