So I've been obsessed with cats since I can remember. I grew up with cats, and studied big cats a lot in grade school. Right now the two fuzzballs in our house are on my bed about five feet away from me. More than any, I love my cat Typhoon.

I chose pieces on how similar and yet very different cats can be. Every one has their own personality, just like we do.

Of course I couldn't do just five pieces

This is one of those rare stolid cats that doesn't constantly look evil or unbearably cute or both simultaneously. I also love the colouration of this cat.

I'm sure you've all see this artist's work before. This is a perfect dumb fat cat who is blamed for everything. All he wants is to be loved, right?

Speaking of the evil in cats... Cute fluff, but any second it could strike. And it taunts. Is anyone else thinking Izma from Emperor's New Groove?

This one makes me giggle. The cat that doesn't quite act like a cat - more like a meerkat.

This is definitely the kind of cat and photo that makes you realize why cats are considered so mythical and otherworldly.

Similar to the last one, you get the intensity of the feline very nicely in this photograph.

This is just a surreal photograph that seems to combine adorable cat with magical cat. Those eyes make it seem you're looking right through to the grass on the other side. Gorgeous.

Well, here we are at the end of yet another year, verging on a new one. For me, I'm ready. It's been a rough year, and I'm ready for a new one to start. I hope this past year has been better for you, but don't forget to always look forward even if you remember the past well.

So let's start this year with a bit of good will and hope.

As I've mentioned, I have recently been made co-founder of #publicoutreach. It's about time I do some long-awaited spam for this group. Please read my recent blog on RESPECT. It is something important every deviant and member of this community should understand and practice.

I'm also a member of #ItDoesNotHaveMe. This is a wonderful group for those struggling with illness, especially long term and/or life long, or those with close friends and family dealing with such struggles. It a good way to connect with others in similar situations and express one's self through their personal art.

On that note, $Moonbeam13's Nov/Dec 2009 Community Relations Newsletter lists some great ways to get involved and support those participating in walks, fundraisers, etc. A new discovery for me is `iggygirl's Give deviantART the (Index) Finger. She is participating in Walk for Memories to benefit The Alzheimer Society on 13 January. It's a simple way to help out and show support.

The New Year is a time for promises to one's self. I don't usually do these, but I'll toss one in for deviantART. My dA resolution and to work through the piles of deviations I have in my message centre. It's also to do more both for the community and for individuals within it.

As for myself? Well, it's less of a 2010 resolution and more of a Life resolution. I need to get healthier. I need to focus more on doing the right things for my body and mind. Not always pleasant, but forever important. I started physical therapy this week to build core strength. Hopefully next Fall I'll be in an apartment and will be able to manage my diet better. I've also decided to cut back from 15-hour semesters to 12-hour semesters. This probably means I'll be going an extra semester or two long, but it's better than having to take another withdrawal. I'm not a very structured person, at least not in the same way most people are. In any case, I need to work on it. This means if you see me online at some ungodly hour, feel free to smack me.

It's been one cuss of a year, but deviantART has proved itself a pleasant outlet and avenue for friendship and support.

People give me a lot of crap for befriending a lot of MN@. They call me brown-noser, etc. A lot even joke about how I should be an MN@ myself. Sure, I'd like to be, but not because I'm attracted to power. I like the community, and I want to give more to it. As for the MN@s, they're great people. Sit down, talk with them. They're not just overlords. A lot of you can say that these are wonderful people, and hoots of fun.

The last year has been a lot of that for me - finding where I am and where I want to be, and making the best of it even if it's not what I want. About a year ago now I discovered the wonders of dAmn and the deviantART community. It's grown on me like a friendly tumour that's more like another limb now.

The problem is, I don't have the time to be involved in everything [though I would love to]. I spend tons of time in the chats [namely #devart and #seniors these days], but I want to do more than just socialize. Don't get me wrong! I love the socializing bit, but I want to be more active in the community.

`IBinsanity recently added me on as a co-founder in #publicoutreach. As soon as finals are done and over with [after this week] I'll be adding to that. But I'm also looking for something a little more laid back. Any ideas?

I am thankful I am alive. I may not be in the healthiest of states, but I am alive and I have the ability to get the medical treatment I need.

I have a loving family. Despite all my rantings and ravings, it is true that they do love and care for me. Call me selfish, but I do not doubt any of them would jump off a cliff for me. I'm lucky.

I have friends. From my best friend of some eight or nine years to those I have met within the last months, I have friends.

Of course I could go on, but I won't get nitty gritty. You all mostly know that this last year has been a hellish road for me, but the road hasn't stopped. I'm still going along and making my way, even if there are days when I want to give up - and trust me, there are. So I am thankful that I have had the support and love to make it this far, and keep making it still.

In the USA, the end of Thanksgiving also marks the start of the Christmas season. Let's put aside the self-righteous, must be politically correct fanaticism for a second and consider what this really means. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanzaa, or none of the above, it is a time of year to be celebrated. Some celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, some the miracles of God, and some their heritage. Some simply celebrate the close of an old year and the start of a new. In the end, it is a time to be happy. We all have our struggles, and there will always be those who do not have the luxury to celebrate this time of year - or any for that matter. Don't take for granted what you do have, even if it doesn't seem a lot. You have someone who cares, I guarantee it. Hell, if you're reading this you have access to the internet. We see that as such a normal commodity today, but we don't realize how brilliant such easy access to the world is. Some of you live a few hours away, and some of you live literally on the other side of the globe. But here we are, making friendships.

Take a step back. Take a few deep breaths. Concentrate on just your breathing. And then look around, and appreciate what you have. There is no easy in life, but there is graciousness. There is something to celebrate. Your health? Your family? Your life? Whatever it is, take hold of it and appreciate it for all its worth.

I wish you all a wonderful season, be it Winter or Summer, and may the new year ahead bring better times for us all.

Admitting Defeat

Sometimes it has to be done. Tiny or big, defeat happens. The next step is admitting it and moving forward.

The last few weeks have been absolute crap. With the seasonal changes has come a crazy flare up in my Lupus. In addition, two and a half weeks ago I came down with what I thought was a stomach virus. It seemed to go away. Last week I was down and out for a good 48 hours with the flu vaccine [just can't wait for the H1N1 vaccine...]. Then this week started, and the stomach issues were back and accompanied by a sore throat. Mum thinks it's reflux issues acting up again. I'm inclined to agree. Either way, it's killed me physically and emotionally. I've been sleeping every chance I get - between classes, meals, course work, and meetings. I keep telling myself that I just need to make it through the rest of the month, and it'll be fine again. It's sort of helping.

Unfortunately, this means I wasted $55 on bus tickets I won't be using. Yup. I hate to say it, but I won't be going to the DFW devMeet after all. "Bummed" is an understatement. I'm trying not to get too upset, but... well, it's difficult.

I have my first mid term next week. Week after that are my other three. I'm not overly concerned about the tests themselves, but combined with my shitty health, I'm starting to fret a little. It's been a pretty rough time trying to keep myself relatively level-headed. Remember, this time last year was when I had to take a medical withdrawal from school. October will be a bitter month for a while.

Moving On...

I've been hearing a lot [more around school than dA] about "October is THIS awareness month" "No, it's THIS awareness month." Look, the deal is there's a lot of shit in the world, a lot more than 12, and there's going to be overlapping. Stop arguing over which month it is. It's not a competition. Pull together.

SFA

Despite the crap I'm going through personally, I am loving SFA. I'm mostly enjoying PRIDE Nac [our LGBT group], aside from some drama I won't bore you with. Today I started to get involved with our Amnesty International group. I'm pretty psyched about that.

I'm also starting up Safe Space [check out glsen.org for more] program here on campus, thanks to a lot of support from PRIDE and hopefully our LGBT-friendly counseling services.

No, my vampires do not sparkle. They also don't burn in the sunlight, or follow some of the classic tenets of vampire lore. But I also make adjustments in that if you shoot a vampire through the brain or heart with a regular ole bullet, they're probably not going to survive it.

Water, water everywhere - we're gonna get wet!

But on a serious note regarding water, Manila and the rest of the Philippines are suffering heavily from the typhoons and subsequent flooding. Large parts are under water still and will be for at least another week. Huge areas are without electricity and running water - irony is a bitch, isn't it? The death toll is well into three digits [I think over 300 at last count]. I have a very close friend in Manila and have not heard from him in quite some time. I know the likeliest reason is because he's simply without power and internet, but I'm a worrier from a long line of worriers. Now onto the matter of this journal's title.

17 October is the Dallas-Fort Worth devMEET! ^StJoan is organizing - and she did such a wonderful job with the Austin one in July. I'll be taking a Greyhound up on the 16th to meet up with =TimmyA1988 who is flying in from NYC! FFFFFF YAY! Then on Saturday we'll be meeting up with @mackattack23 and =CynthiaCynical. I'm also hoping to get a peek at the ever allusive $damphyr at the meet. I can honestly say I'm giddy about this meet. I thought it would be a lot longer until I could finally meet Tim, who was one of my first friends on dA. Now it's only a few weeks away. I could pee my pants I'm so excited.

Then I have midterms. Guess what I'll be doing on the bus ride. Guess. Bleh. Speaking of the bus again, if you have any tips or whatnot I'd love to hear them. Never been on a Greyhound bus before.

So after midterms we of course have Halloween and Thanksgiving. I have no idea where I'm ending up for Thanksgiving. Either back in Austin, up in Connecticut with the grands, or in Indiana with my bestest friend. I think if it comes down between Austin and CT I'll go wherever my brother does. If he's not at either... Then I haven't a clue.

So finals are the week before my birthday. And I think I'm done that Wednesday. Two of my finals are portfolios, so I only have to sit through three four-hour exams. I doubt they'll take the whole four hours, though. And then it's back to ye ole Austin towne! But I'll only be in Austin for about three weeks. Then, THEN! THEN GUESS WHAT.

Kentucky, bitches. That's right. During my last week of break I'm going to KY to my old college to visit all my friends during their three-week winter/January term. I really almost did pee myself when I got the green light to do this. It's been over a year since I've seen any of them. I was especially spurred on by a sad dream I had about visiting and only three people were happy to see me. I told my friends and they were all, "FFF! LAIZ!" or something to that effect. So yay.

I'm alive, really.

This weekend I have two papers to write as well as a poem to get ready for workshopping Tuesday. I'm also switching from introduction/beginners' Latin (I) to intermediate Latin (III). Actually, that's a good thing. I was ready to beat my head into the wall from boredom. But I really need to get on top of my grammar in that class.

I also rediscovered on Friday - and brace yourselves for this one - a social life outside of dA. What the hell, right?

Anywho, I'm going to get back to dA more. I swear. After these papers are done it should be a little better. It's only my second weekend after all. But I do need to un-watch the deviation and scrap uploads for the groups I watch until things get settled. My message centre is already back to 5.5k+ - just the deviations.

On another, sort of random note, Bob Leatherbarrow is teaching at our studio in Austin this weekend/next week. I'm very sad because Bob is awesome and I won't get to see him. He's a really cool Canadian and glass artist.

Oh look! 99 days until my birthday...

Also, rain is nice.

In addition, if you're in the Austin area do not go to the Village Alamo Drafthouse. They are crappy. All I will say is: cockroach. Go to the Lakecreek one instead. They are spifftacular.

Thank you everyone. I just talked to my friend and her dad is fine. He actually had to have a septuple bypass, but his heart muscles are fine [just the valves were clogged]. Aside from everyone being tired and adrenaline-ridden, they seem to be doing well. Again, my appreciation for your support. My friend said to me on the phone [and understand that she is a writer and visual artist with great originality], "I know it's cliche, but I feel blessed."

Well, things are settling in nicely at the new apartment. So I managed to chop down my message centre by 100 [not including deviations]. I still have more than a 100 to go through. Most of them were journals, and a lot I skimmed through at most. I still have more than enough I really want to read through.
