On a rare occasion when movies which aren't considered mainstream are actually screened in a mainstream movie theater within 500 miles of Kansas City (even though there's a perfectly good independent movie theater just downtown, but I digress) I caught the one-night-only screening of the new Eureka Seven movie last Thursday. An okay film, despite the completely remodeled storyline and a kind of bittersweet ending.

My baby cousin Abigail turned one year old this week, and we're going to a party tomorrow to celebrate.

The Jayhawks won against their toughest non-conference opponent this season, beating Southern Miss by seven points. The defensive line can be credited for keeping the Golden Eagles from tying the game for the fourth time. I hope we can improve between now and our conference season opener in two weeks.

Got a new iPhone last week.

More art coming.
It is with a heavy heart that I announce that on Monday July 13, 2009 at around 11:00 pm Central daylight time, AC Adapter V, the adapter which came with my current laptop when I bought it last year, passed away.

The cause of death has been identified as one similar to most of the four adapters I went through with my old machine - the area where the cord comes out of the brick and connects to the computer. Hewlett-Packard cannot get it through their heads that the rubber thing connecting the cord to the brick is too rigid and leaves the copper wiring inside the cord to bind and break apart if the cord comes under too much strain.

Sadly this has slowed work on a remake of the NCC Lying in Grass deviation which so direly needs a redo. I've already ordered its successor, AC Adapter VI, and hopefully it should be here by the end of the week.

And I was on an artistic buzz, too...

Luckily during the unprecedented downtime I managed to finish up some NCC and Gwendolyn sketches and I'll get those scanned and posted ASAP.

A short list of things I've done or am doing since the last time I updated this journal:

- Filling up the MP3 player I got for my birthday with every song I can think of.

- Walked down the hill during KU's graduation ceremony in May. Technically, I'm not out yet; I've got two more classes left to take, one for my major, but it's close enough for me to start taking certain things more seriously.

- Developed an idea for a new comic/story/thing: Gwendolyn in the Land of Nonsense. It's sort of a dark, twisted take on shows from Sid and Marty Krofft and the like which feature kids trapped in bizarre, nightmarish and hallucinogen-induced alien worlds. I've put some character art up already, and more is coming.

- Watching Mighty Boosh on Adult Swim. Best comedy they've put on in recent months.

- Starting up work on Nachos Con Carne comic pages. It's slow for the most part, but if I keep going at it then hopefully I can stay focused.

- Preparing to head out to my older sister and brother-in-law's house for the Fourth of July weekend. Sucks that they've banned fireworks in Colorado, but otherwise it should be fun.

- Saw Up in theaters. A very good movie.

A Nachos Con Carne image which would make a good wallpaper.

Finishing that Nutmeg Nan and Sticky piece. Now it's all a matter of character design.

I've recently rediscovered a love for Flash design work (see here and here for good examples) and it's inspired me to do something with my Four Seasons characters. I've got the software on here; I might as well learn how to use it.

Hopefully a new laptop by the end of this year or the start of the next. A new problem has arisen: I keep having to plug my AC adapter in and out again because sometimes it's plugged in and then it switches to battery power for some reason. I've had to replace the adapter so many times since I got this machine (the one I have now is my fourth) and I'd rather get a new machine than get a new adapter.

Why is it when you own a laptop for three years it suddenly stops working on you?

I try to scan some pencil drawings this morning and my stupid USB ports don't even know when I've plugged something in. Then I have to try and adjust the plug like a friggin TV antenna in a very slim hope that it will start to think "Hey, something's plugged in."

On top of that, I come home from school one day and find the door to the CD drive's popped off. And I can't get it back on without tape.

I've been considering getting a new one, but I can't afford it right now because I'm trying to build my bank account back up after finally paying off back debt to the university, not to mention I'm still paying off a car.

If anything good's come out of this I finally got that Nutmeg Nan and Sticky sketch on Photoshop, but this is definitely going to hinder NCC's relaunch unless I can scan everything on campus.

That, and I've had a cold which is thankfully starting to disappear. Hopefully by the start of next week I'll have my scanner hooked back up and I can start getting some drawings up here.

I'm also rethinking the website where I have Nachos Con Carne hosted. I might switch to one that gives you more control of HTML and advertising space. In addition to that, I've redrawn some of the opening pages and everything seems to be flowing a little better.

Watch a movie in class.

Rent a related movie and watch it.
Read a chapter in one of my MANY books.
Combine the above into a 700 word essay and turn it in before class.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

The ramifications:

Twenty or so classmates scrambling to rent ONE movie.

Being forced to buy a copy of said movie once you've learned that it's been checked out. Never mind that you've already spent $130 in textbooks this semester, and you haven't even bought them all yet.

Finding out the only copy they have at Borders is a $40 special edition box set.

The possibility of emptying an entire gas tank searching for a video rental place that has it.

I'm considering Netflix.

So, let's review:

Nachos Con Carne
The sometimes dreary, sometimes curious misadventures of the most hated boy in the world and his friends who attend junior high at a school full of idiot students and incompetent faculty.

Nutmeg Nan and Sticky
Two identical twin sisters, who through a last-minute genetic accident between births look very little alike, struggle with the abnormalities of everyday life--when not with each other.

Radical Tsukiyama
A strange girl from another planet is sentenced to death for a crime she didn't commit, but suddenly grows superpowers and escapes only to crash-land at a rather dull college town on Earth.

Look for more artwork related to these concepts in some way, shape or form in the near future.

One of two final exams out of the way and here's what's coming up for the summer:

I have a third idea for a potential comic project. I'm going to see to making some artwork for it, as well as more for NCC and Tsukiyama.

For some reason, I've never seen it in me to do some fanart, but I've just recently thought of an idea for a series.

I'm taking a fiction writing class over the summer, and if what I write turns out to be really good I'll put it up here for all the world to read. There might be some poetry in there as well.
