Sometimes the future comes faster than expected. As I wrote on the 9th of December, [link] , somewhere in the future I wanted to digitalize my old pictures
Well, the future has arrived. This week I got my negative scanner, a Reflecta Proscan 4000. Not new, but it is in 100 % good condition. Since the highest resolution is 3600 dpi, I can make from a 24 x 36 mm negative a ~ 16 Megapixel digital image.

Unfortunately this scanning also will reveil the quality of the equipment I used in the past. Instead of a paper picture on 15 x 10 cm, I will see the picture on my 19" screen, much bigger, thus revealing all kinds of irregularities.

Nevertheless I hope that some of these pictures will be worth placing on DA.

While processing pictures, and being more critical then in the past, I have updated pictures. First of all, my Photoshop skills are better now, which means I can get more out of a picture. Second, the border around the pictures: 2 years ago I thought it looked nice when all the data of the picture was inside the border. Over the last year I have changed my mind about that. Those who don't care about shutter speed, diafragma and focal length, won't miss it. The people who are interested in this kind of stuff, know what EXIF means, and with which programs they can get it out of the pictures. Most data is anyway visible through DA itself.

For those who want to see some changes, today I uploaded the renewed pictures of Sweden/Gothenburg.

Enjoy.

In my journal of June 24, [link] , I estimated that I would have finished all the remaining processing by the end of this year. Well, I'm not there yet. At the moment I am processing pictures from december 2005, which means I have most of 2006 ahead of me. And that is why I submit pictures of 2 years old over the last weeks. Lucky for me, all 1000+ pictures of the holiday of 2006 have been done, although I have learned a lot about Photoshop Elements since the beginning of this year, and I am sure that when I look at those pictures, I will feel the urge to do some pictures better . But I leave that for later.

Today I was thinking about all the pre-digital pictures. Somehow I think it will be nice to have them on the computer too. But that will take a lot of time. One way is to scan the pictures itself. This means that I have to get a new scanner. I have a scanner of 6 years old, and I don't think it will be suitable for that. The other way is to scan the negatives themselves, which means an even bigger investment in hardware (but with better results). But that is another project for the future.

This afternoon I bought the Sigma 17-70 2.8-4.5 DC Macro.
It is going to replace my Canon EF-S 18-55. The 18-55 was a good bargain for its price, especially between F8 and F11, but I also make pictures under not so good light conditions. Raising the ISO of my 300D is not such a good idea, because of the noise level over ISO 400. But since I don't want to replace my 300D yet (it is still a good camera), I decided to upgrade my lenses.

For telezoom I have the 'hidden L' from Canon, the 70-300 4-5.6 IS USM, so for the moment, I think my set is ok.

Since we have digital camera's in the house, I have to watch the capacity of the harddrives. In my computer a 2 drives present. Up till now, the capacity (240 GB together) looked well.
But in january I have started to look through al the digital images we have. Which also means that I started processing all those images.
My wife bought the first digital camera in our house in July 2004. I bought my Canon 300D in June 2005. Untill now I only processed special images, for DA, my website or for prints. My first big 'job' were the holiday pictures from last August (ca 1100). All became a 'treatment' by Photoshop and all looked better. But I also kept the original images on my harddrive, which thus doubled the taken space. My wife also wants some pictures on real paper, so I have to process these pics also.
Since I am used to the idea of having a expensive camera means more post-processing, I want all pictures to look good, also the ones taken by the camera of my wife. But also from all these previous images I want to keep the originals. One never knows what lies ahead.
Today I bought a new external hard drive with 250 GB, which holds a 1:1 copy of all the pictures on the internal hardrive (was first on a partition on the second internal hardrive).

Just think, I bought my computer back in 1999, with a hard drive of just 8 (in words, eight) Gigabyte. Where will it end?

At last the real autumn started in Holland.
Now it is getting colder (although still to warm for the time of year), rainy and the leaves start falling. I only didn't manage to go out to take pictures of this. Next year better, I hope. Somehow I have to use my time better.

My problem is what a lot of people have: there are not enough hours in a day. Sleeping is nice, but takes a lot of time, and so does work. Well, I try to make the best out of it.
