My boss is now on a month of medical leave... and I don't know how to do all the stuff she does. Nor do I have all the relevant phone numbers, email addresses, etc.

I have no idea how I'm going to fit all her work into my hours (don't know if they're approving overtime for me or not). Also, if I don't do it well enough, I'll get yelled at every day; if I do it too well, they may ask her not to return and stuff me into her chair.

Details: I of course reserve the right to refuse anything I find objectionable. I have no desire to do porn, but nudes and some measure of violence are acceptable. I can work from photographs if desired; I can also do creatures/people/characters/etc that you create as well as those of others with their permission. Copyrighted characters are off-limits, though; the fan art I do, I don't get money for. Visual references are great, but if all you have is a text description, that's fine too. I also reserve the right to put the image here on dA, in my portfolio, and to sell prints unless negotiated otherwise.

With everything except the sketch commission, I will email the commissioner a low-res copy of the design for approval before starting work on inking, shading, or coloring. This is not to slow down the process, but to save the other person potential aggravation if my design is not what s/he had in mind. After approval, I'll keep the commissioner updated as to my progress until I can get it done.

Payment will need to be in advance unless otherwise negotiated. I have Paypal, but a money order in the mail is also okay. If you send a check, I'll need to wait until it clears beforehand. Please no cash in the mail, but if you know me personally, cash in person is fine. If I decide to raise my prices, the price will only apply to future commissions; current ones will remain at the original quoted price. I was busy with work, but then I got laid off a couple of months ago. Then my boyfriend was in town on leave for a bit, and Thanksgiving came around. Now Christmas and New Years are nearly here. >..<

Preparing to contact the temp agency I used to work with, and looking forward to the March/April area, when the bf is done with Afghanistan and gets to come back home. In the meantime, doing a bit of doodling and working on a commission. Will post something when the design stage is done.

After work, I packed up the last few things I needed and headed off to pick up Ethan from class. Some final preparations were in order while we waited for Vox to get home, and then we were off.

Friday

Vox drove through the night; I had the morning shift. We arrived at the hotel at about noonish, checked in and headed for the dealer's room to set up the small army of dolls. Those that were to be guest gifts were given out: Thom got a Lexington, Greg and Keith each got a Goliath, and the con-chair received the mascot dolls. Karine was so ecstatic to receive her Robyn Canmore (in her Bad Guys Hunter outfit) that I believe it never left her side the rest of the day. Paula of Mystick Waboose was also there with her very amusing t-shirts and lovely clothes. We had fun talking to her last year, and this year her company was just as good. ^..^

Spent the rest of the time before Opening Ceremonies working on fleshing out a sketch I'd brought with me, but that was put on hold as soon as the festivities began. I was surprised to see the number of new people there: it seemed like a third of the room had never been to a Gathering before. As usual, everything was entertaining, and we even got to see the music video entries this time. Unfortunately, we got so hungry we missed out on this year's showing of ÂThe Last.Â

Wandered off to find some good food, and boy did we find it (good food seemed to be everywhere). That night it was the Celtic Knot, a very reasonably-priced restaurant with dishes based, naturally, in the British Isles. Vox had a very light salmon covered in pesto atop a bed of spinach, Ethan had something that was the equivalent of beef stew in a pastry, and I had marinated London broil with fingerling potatoes and broccoli. So tasty! After that we shuffled back to the room and promptly fell asleep.

Saturday

I wasn't planning on doing the radio play this year, so my day was pretty easy. Hung out in the dealer's room, gabbed a bit, and inked the sketch. Round about lunchtime we decided to group up for food: took Paula and a couple of other people in search of reasonably priced sushi. Sashimi Sashimi had it, and it was fabulous. Best dragon roll I've ever had, and we had it again for lunch a time or two.

The radio play went well considering the reformatting that had to be done. I like the story better in nonlinear format, but that totally wouldn't have suited the play at all, and everybody did a great job on what Greg turned it into. ^..^ Dinner that night was fun. We followed a tantalizing smell to the FlatTop Grill, which is a place kind of like a Mongolian barbeque. All the raw ingredients and sauces are there to pile into bowls. If you want any extras (or have allergies), there are little plastic sticks you put into the bowl. Then they cook it on a giant hibachi grill, pour it all into a big red bowl, and bring it to you. And it was fabulous! They also had really good drinks. Their pomegranate lemonade was really tasty, and the pomegranate margarita was great, and we had a good laugh as the others partook of their signature beverage: the Horny Monkey. LOL Then it was on to the Blue Mug, which was hilarious and lasted until about 1am. After that we crawled back to the room for some rest.

Sunday

Up and back out to the dealer's room. By the end of the day, my pic had a background and was fully colored (thanks to the borrowing of a laptop for reference). The bio & culture panel was good again this year; we got a pretty full explanation of the mechanisms behind the gargoyles' eyes lighting up, among other things. Ran out for lunch, and then it was time for the Iron Artist competition. Theme: the Ultrapack. Secret Ingredients: uncooked pasta and glue! I handed out some paper and let people borrow my colored pencils, and we got furiously to work. After an hour of grousing, requests to hand things over, giggling, and pasta-smashing, people in the hallway were ÂkidnappedÂ for voting purposes. I didn't win, but it was definitely a fun thing to participate in, and I'll try to whenever we have one.

Ethan and Vox got all pretty for the banquet and dance; I would have, but I'd forgotten to bring anything nice (and I'm not sure any of it fits properly anymore >..< ). The food was pretty good, and the dessert was very good. Note to self: fruit tarts are yummy. Thom and Gorebash were at our table, so we did pretty well on the trivia, but eventually we fell to a Gargoyles 2198 question. In the very beginning, I thought it might be kind of boring to sit in the dealer's room all day hawking my wares... but I was very pleasantly surprised. Even when they didn't buy anything, most people at least made pleasant conversation with me and the hours went by quite quickly. I even made about $60 there, and I came home to a commission! ^..^ I'm *so* going to save up for next year in Chicago. The wonderfully talented lady I went with did so well I practically exploded, and she was like a miniature supernova. Everybody loved her dolls, and one of the organizers begged for a last-minute commission from her as we were getting up to leave! 0..o

The panel I went to on gargoyle physiology and culture was great; I'd have done the ask Thom Adcox (Lexington's voice) panel, but the two were at the same time so I couldn't. That'll be next time if I can swing it. Greg (the producer) asked as many questions during the physiology bit as we did, which I thought was amusing, but it made total sense since he's not a scientist and wants to at least have a working knowledge of the physical workings of his creations. He really got to shine in the culture portion, though; he's thought so much of this out it reminds me of how much I think about the things I create. I also got into the radio play! Nothing big, but I was complimented both directly and indirectly on my performance, so I was really excited. And it was great to get to act out new material. Yes, I said NEW.

For those of you who are unaware, there is a Gargoyles comic that has 4 issues currently in print. Greg Weisman is heavily involved with this project, so it is a continuation of the TV series and completely canon. Unlike that putrid excrescence that is Goliath Chronicles (aka Season 3). The radio play consisted of scripts from the comics: issues 3, 4, and the as-yet-unreleased 5. You get special treats when you go to the Gatherings, you see. ^..^ Obviously I can't tell you the content or Greg won't do that anymore, but suffice it to say that if you love the series, you need to read it. There are some wonderfully beautiful moments in it as well as some surprises.

Also, if you love the series, buy as much of it as you can afford. Please get the DVD sets of seasons 1 and 2a; Buena Vista is waiting for sales on 2a to be noticeable before they'll release 2b! Get the comics if you can, preferably by begging your local comic shop (or whatever passes for one) to carry them and getting everyone you know hooked.

Then they'll let Greg make more! In addition to the continuation of the main storyline, if sales are good enough the spinoffs (see here and scroll halfway down) will be produced. Bad Guys is already slated to run as a 6-issue miniseries. Pendragon will be next, followed by Timedancer, if I remember correctly.

PLEASE pass this stuff along, as it will take a whole lot of people to really make this the stone-by-day juggernaut it could become so they can't stop Gargoyles till it's actually done. Heck, if we in GA can make enough noise, maybe they'll bring the Gathering to us for a change!

In addition, any prints that do not get sold at the con will be advertised here when I get back. Heck, I'll just put up a list of what was available and you can order any of them, since I won't have trouble making more. (yay for friends, awesome printers, and good paper!) They will be a bit more than at the convention since shipping's involved, but that shouldn't be too big a deal.

On Saturday, I moved my first carload of stuff over to the new house, mostly comprised of stuff I had that was already packed up and sitting in the basement here. Didn't unpack it very much since there's not really anywhere to put it yet, but I did go through a bunch of stuff my mother saved for me from my late grandfather's kitchen, as well as what wouldn't be going directly into my room.

I'm so glad we did. By the time we sorted through it all, over half of it was too old/worn/ugly to really be any use to me. I did add to the communal kitchen two cake pans, two pie pans, and two new big frying pans, though, so it wasn't a total loss. Anything that could be salvaged was carted to the garage to await transport to the (really close) thrift store.

I'm not sure how much of the stuff that did go directly to the room will be kept, though I think most of it is useful enough that it will be. This week I plan to take everything left at my parents' house that isn't furniture and cart it over. That should be a lot less, with a higher "keeper" percentage, thank goodness... and it will be nice to get all my nifty stuff back (and get rid of the ugly ones). I have some carousel horses, dragons, and other stuff that I've done without for way too long.

After all this, I zipped over to some other friends' house to see their litter of month-old kittens and change, then we went on to the Bridgetown Grill (I think) for dinner, which was interesting. Caribbean flavor, and LOTS of spices on the food. Not sure if I like it or not, but the conversation was good, and so was dessert.

Then, more fun at the art show at Spring 4th! It really is just a red door in the side of a warehouse. LOL Anyway, much good art there, yes. Especially the paintings. The patio area was really cool with its parachute ceiling and heating.. uh... thingies. Couldn't hang out there much at a stretch after awhile because it was the (only) smoking area and from time to time it got quite clogged. Anyway, the music was good too, and I had a lot of fun dancing, though it was the first time I've been on the floor alone. There were never more than 3 people (including me) dancing at once, which was really odd, but it gave me plenty of room and I didn't have to worry about bumping into anyone. Eventually ran out of steam, though, and had to go home. Returned about 3am.

After a fitful night of sleep, my body insisted on being fully awake again at 9. x..x Got ready and headed to ~Rhaycen and ~Kaityn80's for some conversation and lunch before heading to art show #2. This one was in Rome and it took a bit to find since there were no signs, but we eventually arrived and got to see some of the better places and artists' work. *starglo21 and *xelf had their jewelry booth set up and had been doing a brisk business all weekend, which I'm really happy for. They deserve it. ^..^ (you can see what's left at their jewelry account, *SoulStoneDesigns) Also saw the work of some potters, painters, basket weavers, woodworkers, and glassworkers. Really cool stuff, and I came away with a set of earrings, a ruby pendant, and a pitcher/saucer set. I'll be using the saucer for my little dragon incense burner, but I'm sure we'll use the pitcher too. hehe.

We then helped pack up and get everything back to their house, and hung out till dinnertime, when ~hoshikaze made us some wonderful panini sandwiches (recipe please!). More gabbing and stuff, and then I needed to get the three of us home.

Unfortunately, when I arrived at the house to drop off ~Kaityn80 and ~Rhaycen and the pitcher, we found that neither of them had taken their keys. >..< A trip to the 24-hour Kroger (which was good, because my house needed toilet paper), a few phone calls, waiting till midnight-thirty, and a $150 locksmith later, they got in. Returned about 1am with toilet paper, which my roommate blessed me for in the morning, and again had trouble sleeping. Beh.

Today has gone well so far, and hopefully the rest of the week will follow in like fashion. ^..^

Okay, first off, the older of my younger brothers is coming in from Texas for three weeks (the longest he's stayed since he started his ministry internship 2 years ago), so my mother's ecstatic. She loves it when she gets to see her babies again.

Because of this, and that my other brother is off school all this week (0..o), my family's going to visit my grandmother tomorrow. They'll be staying there until Saturday morning, when they'll drive from her place to my uncle's for our family Thanksgiving celebration. Which is, of course, fine. ^..^

There were a couple of problems, though. Because of this incident last month, Mom's afraid to leave the house "unguarded," the two big dogs need letting in/out every evening/morning, and the little dogs need their papers changed daily (and she didn't have the money to board any of them). The cats would probably be fine.

Anyway, since I couldn't go and this would only be for two days, I accepted the caretaker position. I don't have to clean this week since the decorations for Christmas (including the tree) will be going up next week and get the house all messy... so she's paying me my cleaning rate to do this. And I only have to be there for the above mentioned duties: I don't have to stay there all day bored out of my head. I also took off work Friday so I wouldn't have to deal with going to work from her house. And... I get to bake the red velvet cake again, this time for our family party. YAY! And I'll get it right the first time, this time.

So my Thanksgiving holiday will consist of a little bit of dogsitting and I'll have to figure out what else. Though I plan to be out of the house as much of the daylight hours as I can.

I don't know what Mom plans on doing to cover Christmas, since I'll be there with them for that. Maybe she'll actually buckle down and board her precious little babies (and the big dogs) then. At least they'll be inflicted on people who won't take any nonsense, and might even teach them something about good behavior.

Note: No, I don't hate dogs; I don't even dislike them. I'll pet them and play with them as long as they're not being a nuisance. But they need to be properly trained, and the little ones are not. Not even properly housebroken, the youngest barks (and bullies the middle one), the middle one is dumb as a brick (the poor boy), and the eldest is a certified drama queen with separation anxiety.

There's a Thanksgiving party that I'm going to on Saturday, and I promised to bring my family-recipe red velvet cake to it. This is a cake I've baked more times than I can count, and never have had a problem with, though it's considered a very finicky cake.

Well, I had a problem last night. Several, actually.

The cake itself is a bit too dense. I got distracted during the tricky part and put 2 cups of flour instead of 2.5, and it didn't look any different till it came out of the oven. When it did, it was really dark, and more moist-feeling than usual. On the up side, it still tastes good, so I didn't have to scrap it. ^..^

The icing, unfortunately, was unsalvageable. It's just butter, sugar, and a thickening mixture (boiled, then cooled water, corn starch, and vanilla). Usually it only takes a couple of tablespoons of the mixture to thicken the icing sufficiently for spreading. This time, even after adding two whole batches of the thickener, it might as well have been yellow sugar-soup. BEH! >..<

So tonight I try again. Maybe I just bought the wrong butter, and with any luck this batch will be spreadable and yummy instead of craptacular.

Well, it's new to me. I've finally gotten rid of my curve-screened, 13ish" Packard Bell monitor, and gotten myself something like a 16" Proview with a flat screen. For $25. ^..^ Sometimes having scrounger connections pays off.

And now for something completely different. Someone tried to break into my parents' house last night. With all the lights on. And while they had tons of company. By all accounts, he was at the very least drunk, and possibly high on something as well.

This man bashed in the glass to the basement access door and stuck both arms in trying to get it open (getting nice and bloody in the process). There's a deadbolt there that he obviously couldn't do anything about, so he contented himself with shouting at my father (who was in one of the upper windows yelling at him) and trying to hit him with a PVC pipe.

Luckily this was too short to do anything of the kind, and he didn't get in. Otherwise he'd have had my dad and my brother (with his baseball bat) to contend with. He apparently also threw up all over the place and when he was done trying to bean my dad, he just sat down on the ground till the cops came to get him.

So everyone's okay, nobody got hurt and there was no major property damage... I'm thankful that it wasn't worse. Which is the other end of this bad-news-bracketed-by-good-news post.

*The loan has been approved, and ~Rhaycen and ~Kaityn80 are in!

My landlord died, so it's possible that in a few months the government would snatch the house out from under my roommate and I. ~Rhaycen and ~Kaityn80 have been stuck in her mom's basement so long they want to rip their hair out.

We then had the bright idea that all of us together could get better housing than the pair of them and I each alone. The last house we visited has everything we want! Two bedrooms upstairs, one giant one downstairs (which we'll use as computer/guest quarters), two full baths (yay!), plenty of other rooms, a nice big kitchen, patio, private backyard, bar, parking space, etc etc etc. It's on a cul-de-sac in a pretty good area of town, too, and near my job. And its asking price is under $135k. ^..^

This means it's a long way from where they're working right now, but they wanted to move closer to this area anyway, so they'll be looking around in the near future.

This will also allow all of us a lot more freedom. We won't have to worry about other people's pets, mutated leftovers, or disguising who/what we are. We just need to make sure we have all the information we can and keep the lines of communication open to make sure this will work. Everyone seems to be happy for us, and I nearly exploded in glee, but my spiritual advisor stepped on my tail and brought me back to reality a bit.

This is going to be a lot of work. I was ~Kaityn80's roommate in college, so we do have some groundwork, but this will be much different. We aren't a triad or anything, but this is going to be a pretty long term arrangement and will take some getting used to. We'll have division of labor, which is nice; we just have to figure out who will do what and how often it needs to get done. ~Rhaycen and I will share cooking duties, but we'll have to keep in mind what everyone likes/dislikes to make mealtime happy. Obviously we'll all have to keep talking about things, and stay open with one another. And probably a lot of other stuff I haven't even thought about yet. But it will be good too, and I think that will be worth the work... and I'm confident it can happen. ^..^

This is a rather longer story than I'd like it to be, and so far it hasn't had the happy ending I want, but this may deserve some explanation.

Anyway, it all began years ago when I first heard from my mother that a huge public aquarium was going to go up in downtown Atlanta. She's friends with a guy who works at Home Depot, who knew a lady who worked for the Marcus Foundation (that was going to be funding the whole thing). Even better, she was handling a lot of the hiring process. So obviously I polished up my resume and sent it in.

No word, so I scrounged her work number and called several times, with equivocal success. She never told me no, but she never told me yes either. I wish she had. I sent her my resume every time I had a new job or something to otherwise add to it, in hopes that I might qualify for something. Then I lost her number. >..< The construction started, and still no word; it neared completion, nothing; it was getting stocked with animals; nada.

Six months after it opened its doors I had to admit defeat. They just didn't want a recent college grad with no work experience in a pertinent field, even though my major was good for them. Not when they had the best of the best fighting for positions there. For awhile I gave up, but now I guess I've made peace with the situation.

So I've applied for their volunteer force. If I can't get a job there, I might as well be close to it. My interview is this weekend, and after that and the training and the $60 fee, I should be accepted.

And maybe if I'm there long enough and make them love to have me there, they'll offer me a real job when there's an opening.

EDIT: I'm in! The background check took *forever*, but I passed that and the drug test and just got notified the other day. Now all I need to do is pay the fee, make my uniform order, and complete my training. Then they'll put me out there and I'll be soooo happy! ^..^

Either way, for all that he was kinda cheesy and I couldn't watch much of him on TV, he did manage to raise the wildlife awareness of an entire generation (especially for the "ugly" critters - reptiles and such). For that, he has my respect. May his wife continue their work and their children grow up healthy.

And so I return from my grandmother's house. It was a nice, relaxing vacation, although I got back much later than I thought I was going to (after 11pm, ugh).

I did a lot of reading and some sketching while I was out, so the fruits of my labor will be displayed soon.

I also wanted to learn some rudimentary sewing techniques so I could do some mending when I needed to. My grandmother graciously gave me her extra sewing machine to help me, which I was grateful for. She also suggested a beginning project, and I picked out a potholder pattern to do. Now, this is not a normal square potholder; this is one of the really long ones you pick casserole dishes out of the oven with (there are places to put a hand into each end). I told her I needed one because my roommate likes to keep changing the hiding places of the potholders and I can never seem to find two when I need them. Now I only need the one. ^..^

Anyway, I managed to make it harder on myself by a. using more than one fabric and b. designing it myself instead of just following the pattern. It took about 8 hours total spread over two days, but I think it's worth it. I don't have a camera, so you guys will have to wait till I can get a picture made of it, but I assure you it's pretty. I'll be happy to have the use of it for years, and my grandmother also approved of my workmanship.

For the rest of my time, I got to go to the beach, ate much good food, and did some shopping. I have a few new clothes now, and the socks I desperately needed, and some new rocks. I couldn't leave without visiting the Black Market Minerals there, and I never leave one of those places without some stones. Fortunately, my grandmother loves them too, and she picked up a selenite candle holder for her eldest son's girlfriend (she's visiting them in Boston next week). I got some adventurine, kyanite, citrine, tiger iron (red tiger eye), sodalite, and brecciated, uh, jasper, I think.

Much happy. And now back to my regularly scheduled life.

Just to let everyone know - I'll be gone for a week beginning this Sunday. My grandmother lives in Charleston, a good 6.5 hours' drive from here, and my mother and I are planning a visit.

We leave Sunday noonish after eating at Mom's. We'll probably make a stop halfway for some refreshments and stretching before arriving around dinnertime. Ditto in reverse for next Sunday, so I should be back between 6 and 8 pm that day.

In between is going to be a mix of talking, watching movies, reading, walking on the beach, and probably some shopping. My grandmother likes to buy me stuff for my birthday, and since I was coming anyway, she waited to spend it on me till I could be there. Maybe I'll get some more wearable shorts this way; a lot of mine are old and falling apart. And socks. Boy do I need socks. ;..;

Anyhow, I'll probably do some art during that time period too, which is why I haven't posted either of the prizes yet. I'm planning to work on them next week when I don't have so many other things impinging on my creative time.

In the meantime I'm working on coloring a couple of things digitally and I have another sketch or two I might get around to finishing up. Not sure yet.

Until then, I'll be checking around here as normal and maybe submit a thing or two before I leave, depending.

To all those who have watched Gargoyles and liked/loved/obsessed over Disney's brush with serious animation (some call it American Anime now):

In 2004, season 1 (13 episodes) came out on DVD to celebrate its 10-year anniversary. Very happy moment. Last year, season 2a (26 out of 52 eps) was released on the same medium. Also, happy.

Season 2b is in big trouble. Due to low sales on seasons 1 and 2a, it looks like the rest of that season isn't going to be released on DVD this year. If it doesn't get released soon, it's in danger of never being produced at all.

Please, we can't let this happen. Season 3 sucked and I won't cry if it's not released on DVD, but the rest of season 2 is awesome stuff and should be viewable!

Do your part by purchasing the DVDs that have been produced, so we can convince the company to finish the series up. If you can afford it, buy new, since I don't know if sales of the used ones are counted. If you can't, buy used just in case (and either way you get the show). And tell everyone you know (at least the ones that liked the show) to do the same! Hopefully we can get the rest of season 2 out, and if we're really lucky, they'll take notice. Then we might see a continuation of the series and/or some of the spinoffs. Or a real movie (the "movie" is just the first 5 eps edited differently). I for one would love to see the TimeDancer stuff come out, and for the original to continue.

And so we have dAv5. Do I like it? I'm not sure. I haven't had a chance to really poke around with it, but at first glance the front page, at least, seems all right. I rather like that it's devoted completely to the art and that the news has its own page now (it was difficult to find older news stuff before). I'm also very happy that the search button is no longer that nasty radioactive grab-your-eyeballs green and that nothing's actually white, but I don't think the username and message links contrast enough with the bar they're in.

On deviation pages... most of the page is okay. Not great, but okay. I dislike the comment section, however. The comment fields don't really contrast the background of the page, so it amounts to the comments just having borders around them. If the main background were darker like on the user page, this wouldn't be as big a deal, but I think the deviation bg is too light for the comments to have the same color.

On user pages... now, I do like these. The comments are now nested so you can tell what replies go with which original entries, you can see more than one recent deviation and favorite. The lists on those two places have been eliminated, while the watchers/recent visitors lists have alternating colors, streamlining the page and making it easier on the eyes.

Verdict so far: interesting, but needs more exploration.

I'll update with further opinions as I continue to prowl around.

In other news, I have hives. Again. And before you ask, no, nothing's changed except the temperature outside.

Several years ago when I was still in college, I had them the first time. Some friends and I had gone to a lakehouse for a week for fun; half was ruined because of the attack. Over the course of the day during those three days, I'd gradually get itchy, raised patches of redness on my skin. They'd begin under my clothes, and spread to my entire body by the middle of the night. And not only did the patches itch; they burned. Benadryl would knock it back during the night, only to start again the next day.

On day 3, I resolved to just stick it out because I thought the Benadryl was just delaying the course of whatever this was. I spent most of the night in cold water to relieve the itch/burn, but the next day it had all cleared up, seemingly never to return.

Until two weeks ago, when I had a couple of mild days of it. Didn't need the medicine because it just went away. Then this weekend it returned with a vengeance, though not as bad as that long-ago case. Now the medicine is only keeping it from spreading, and knocking the existing patches back a little. I'm hoping that keeping up the meds will kick it out completely.

Apparently ~Rhaycen's dad has this problem now and again: it's an allergy to heat (even though it's much cooler there than here). Unseasonably warm temperatures do something to the body that produces an allergic skin reaction. I don't remember how hot it was at the lakehouse, but it's certainly much hotter now than it usually is, so I'm inclined to agree... especially since nothing else in my life has really changed. I've had friends with anxiety-related hives, but during the most stressful times in my life I've been hive-free, so it probably really is the heat.

Anyway, the cure is allergy medicine until my body decides to stop freaking out, so I hope it quits soon. And don't worry, this isn't affecting me too badly, so I'll still be working and everything, just really uncomfortable.

**Update** Thanks to me being inside for most of the time again and some timely rain (which means a temperature drop), I'm all better! My skin has cleared up nicely, and I only get a little itchy when I get warm now.

Ah, the season of half-grown baby birds (and most everything else, but that doesn't come into the story)...

My roommate has a window in her room that she keeps opening. This wouldn't be a problem if the screen didn't have a hole bigger than a kitten in it. When she leaves it open, bugs and stuff get in all the time, and she hadn't seemed to notice.

Today proved that it was better to leave that window shut than open.

We were watching TV this afternoon and talking and such, when this black thing whirred over my head. I thought it was just a butterfly or moth until I had a good look at it. It was a just-fledged baby brown thrasher, about the length of my palm, perched on the curtain rod.

The cats immediately went nuts, trying to chase it around the room. I knew we had to get it out of the house, so lacking a net I got a pillowcase and rolled it up a bit. By the time I did, it had fluttered into the fake trees, bounced off a wall or two, and landed within reach of the cats. Luckily it was one of the declawed ones that grabbed it; all it lost were a few feathers. A couple more flutterings and bouncings, and it landed on the floor.

I popped the pillowcase over it and waited. Once it hopped a couple of times I maneuvered the case closed and got it outside, then turned it upside down and opened it. After a second or two, the baby flew right out and landed in the oak near our door.

The cats, not seeing its departure, continued to sniff and stare and sneak around the room, trying to find the bird and eat it. The baby will probalby not fly into anyone's house again, and Paula will hopefully remember to keep that window closed.

~Rhaycen, ~Kaityn80, and myself all went to the Callaway Gardens area this past Saturday and stayed till noonish today. We stayed in a 1 bedroom cabin-type thing with a kitchen and a pullout bed in the couch. It was nice since we got to cook for ourselves (and saved plenty of money doing so!) We got to see the gardens, which weren't all in bloom, but plenty for us. And there was enough greenery there too; lovely trees and water plants. There was also a lake with big bream and lots of turtles, including two giant softshells. ^..^

But the highlight of that day has to be the Butterfly House. You go into a humid greenhouse for tropical butterflies, and not only do you get to see them "hatching" out of their chrysalis in the special holding places, you get to go in among them. There are plenty of flowering plants for them to drink from, and lots of waterworks, and big fans blowing downdrafts in front of the doors so the butterflies don't escape.

And they're all kinds of colors! White, black, everything in between, patterned, iridescent, everything. And plenty of the greenery is low or mid level so you can even take pictures if you like. None landed on me, but I was okay with looking. Of course, some of them didn't seem to be butterflies at all: real butterflies don't pose for pictures.

Also got into a local barbeque house: the Three Lil' Pigs. Small, but well priced and cozy, and their food is pretty good, if a bit on the tangy/spicy side for me.

The next day we spent nearly all day at a wild animal park not too far from the cabin. There's a place to get food, a tiny arcade, a gift shop (with good quality, low-priced shirts), a walking animal tour and a car-ride tour. You can also buy food pellets for the animals for cheap. We did the walking tour that had things like serval and coatimundi and bears and snakes and things, but nothing seemed to want the pellets.

The car tour was much more interesting, with zebra, giraffe, bison, huge-horned cattle, oxen, and several species of deer. The cattle, zebras, and bison were the most likely to hang around the trailside and come to your car window for the pellets, but you had to be careful. The cattle and bison have slimy noses/tongues, and ~Kaityn80's Cobalt got a cowlick smiley-face on the front passenger side door.

The zebra could nip, and the emus like to peck, so you had to throw the food for them so they wouldn't get your fingers. You also had to fling it for the deer, who were a little leery of approaching vehicles, but would gladly eat what landed near them.

Later that day we went to the pool and had plenty of fun batting the place's inflatable ball around. Had to go to bed early though, since everything had tired us out quite thoroughly. And today we had to get up and go, though I stopped at their place and watched some Naruto and had dinner at Bahama Breeze first. Their chocolate dessert is awesome! squee!

**Update** After a couple of days full of IVs and a catheter, she's back home! It's type 1 diabetes, for all who were wondering, so she's having the dubious pleasure of learning to live with sticking herself several times a day (she hates needles). She should be along in the next 24 hours or so with a journal of her own, so go visit and give her some love. ^..^

**Update** I was right; I had no idea who my teammates were, but I will likely remember them even if I don't see them again for awhile. We didn't win any of the prizes, which was fine; one of the people I know was in the 2nd place team, and the big boss was on the losing team. I got my first strike ever today!

We played two games, and only one of us broke 100 either time (he did for both). My scores were 76 and 66, third in my team of four. But the food was good and I had fun even though I'm sore now.

And we got to leave early and didn't have to come back. So I got my car's emissions inspected and bought some music and stuff too.

So it was a good day.

Apparently last night there was a swatch of time in which submitted deviations were trying to be stored on a full server. In other news, two of my cousins were in their high school's version of the Beauty and the Beast play, which was awesome for such an undertaking. Real set buildings, backdrops, good costumes and makeup, even good musicians. One cousin was the beast, and he definitely did a good job at it; the other was one of the people that had several roles, and I couldn't pick her out as easily, but everyone did well, so she did too.

Helped *starglo21 move some stuff from her current place to the new house. It's small and has no tub, but it uses space well and will be a nice change for her and ~xelf and all their animals. I'll have to see if they need some more help soon. She also gave me her printer/copier/scanner she wasn't using, so now I have one with good software that doesn't turn everything pink!

Also helped ~hoshikaze a little with some housecleaning. One counter in the kitchen and 3 cabinets are now fully clean/organized. I'll be doing some more of that sometime, too, as there's still stuff left for me to help with.

One of the fat cats lost about 1/3 of her body weight over the last 6 weeks, so we got concerned. Took her to the vet to see if anything was wrong (we were fearing cancer, kidney failure, etc) and...

She's fine. She doesn't have worms, her heart/kidneys/liver/thyroid/etc are all perfectly fine... she's not even diabetic. So she just lost a lot of weight, and now is down to normal kitty poundage. I just hope all that extra floppy skin goes away soon.

Lots of birthdays coming up too... must buy presents!

Must also see what's going on at Mom's so I can give her present to her. I called earlier but she was asleep. Ah well. That's all I can think of so I'll see everyone later. ^..^

A heads-up for everyone I know personally:

I can get discount tickets for RenFest through work! I know that I and lots of you love to go, and I can get us in for less. I can get you in for $13 each. Yeah, yeah, I know... it's only a $3.95 savings, but still. It's saving you money. I'll just need to know how many tickets I'm buying to get them.

The tickets aren't dated, so you don't all have to go the same day, but it'd be fun nonetheless. If you guys want to plan something, throw some dates up here and we can plan. Large groups are fun, but if nobody's schedules mesh, we can try going in two groups with as many as can attend at each one. I look forward to going, and I hope everybody else can too. ^..^

Ah well. Fun awaits this weekend - I get to play D&D for the first time in nearly 7 months! I missed the game and the interaction, but no more, for I will have fun! Yay!

**Update** In other news, I applied for preferred life insurance (greater coverage, lower payments). To get approved for this, they need blood and urine tests, so I figured I'd have to go to some doctor's office to get this done.

But no! They're coming to me. They're a mobile service and can work on me before I go to work, so I don't have to rearrange my schedule. YAY!

I'm back now. The weekend was pretty good; good food and good conversation, and a couple of good movies. I spent a lot of time reading, which was kind of refreshing. Finished a book and a couple of mystery magazines this weekend, and got to listen to some of my music as well. And have a go at my grandmother's jacuzzi tub. With bubbles. ^..^ I was just tired most of the weekend for some reason.

Incidentally, my roomie got a call yesterday that allowed her to go on a neat vacation for free since someone couldn't go all of a sudden... so I came home to an emtpy house. Except for the cats, of course. -..^ She'll be back Wednesday.

The only un-enjoyable parts were when my mom and brother would have disagreements, which apparently is a pasttime of theirs. Ah well. I was able to avoid most of them, which is good, so I did all right.

Thursday evening I'm going to visit my grandmother for the weekend. It's a heck of a drive (6.5 hr), but hopefully it'll be a bit cooler near the sea. And her food is great. ^..^

My cell phone will be functional, but it'll be roaming and thus very expensive. I also will have some internet access, but it'll probably be more checking on things than extended stays. In short, I'll be available, but not too much, from mid-Thursday till about mid-Sunday.

I got tired of having the negative parts of me resurface at random points, so I did some work. Now the house is blessed, I've done some work on getting the ick out of me, and done a little research. I think I will need a little help and a lot of time in that second endeavor, but I've at least begun. And I won't spend my solitude moping.

I'm going to start coloring my latest lineart soon so I can let my art unblocked, and I've started getting my finances in order. Once I get another visit from my financial advisors, I'll know how much to put where as far as investments are concerned, and I can get the ball rolling on that. Yay for retirement planning early. And early retirement, hopefully.

I'm also having a Pampered Chef party at my house next Saturday. ~hoshikaze is in the business now, and I've decided to help. Hopefully everybody can make it; the snacky dish she's planning to make should be yummy. If you don't know what PC is all about, you can go to their website and check them out; they've got a lot of neat kitchen products, and some of them are pretty innovative. ^..^

Man, lots of people I know are getting into direct marketing companies or looking into (at least partially) doing business for themselves.... I should at least think about when I'm going to start doing Mary Kay stuff. I won't be a dedicated consultant looking to go to the top like my mother, but I can at least provide for myself and my friends. And I'd get my personal stuff at half price. I think they call that being a personal use consultant. At any rate, as long as I'm cleaning for Mom, I get my stuff for free, but I won't be cleaning for her forever, and that's when the freebies are likely to dry up.

Well, we'll see. That's about all I can think of for now, though I'll keep udating you as things happen.

A very nice deviant has made a slew of tutorials (and it continues). I've looked at the digital painting ones and they're awesomely helpful for me. They're geared toward human pics (eyes, skin, hair), but they definitely have applications in the critter arena. I'll be trying them out once I get back to digipainting. ^..^

Now, she's branched out into writing; but not the writing itself. How to get published! I know at least a couple of you may want to publish written works, so they might be very helpful for you.

I currently live in a 1950s cookie-cutter brick house with a basement apartment. No, I live upstairs. Three bedrooms, one working bathroom (and half of one that doesn't). Carpet in the living room and hall, linoleum in the kitchen/dining area, wood in the bedrooms, tile in the bathrooms. It's rather small, but me and most of my stuff fits. Sorta.

My "library" is far outstripping my ability to house books. I simply have noplace to put more... they're in a small bookcase that I suspect was a shoe rack at one point, and all over the nonworking bathroom (that's attached to my bedroom). Since the bathroom doesn't work, that's fine... and that's where the catbox is. So I have to leave my door open at night to make sure we don't find toxic cat poo on the carpet. >..<

Which wouldn't be a problem if my housemate didn't wake up before me and thus wake me up at 6-7ish am. And I wouldn't have to use the basement fridge if she didn't insist on leaving leftovers in the upstairs one until the whole kitchen stinks. Ugh.

And the upstairs shower sucks. We have do go downstairs to get a hot one in the fall/winter, which is ridiculous. But that's no surprise in a house with no insulation and if the windows are sealed, it's badly. So of course the pipes aren't insulated either. >..< And since my computer is right next to the window, at the moment it's borderline freezing.

Ah well.... this is much better than living at home. I just am very much looking forward to the time when I have a place of my own... that's big enough for me, all my books, all the rest of my stuff.... and a snake. Must get Brazilian Rainbow Boa! Then my mom won't sleep at my house.

No, really. She won't. But I'll be getting the snakie because I want it.. that's just a perk. -..^

So even though my house rather sucks, it's better than some alternatives. ^..^

In other news, Thanksgiving week went really well for me. Since my family wasn't doing anything on Thursday, I went to visit ~Rhaycen and ~Kaityn80 and had wonderful food. Yummy brined (a kind of marinade) Cornish hen with puffed potatoes and a leek-and-mushroom dish topped with breadcrumbs and cheese. And brownies afterward.

My family's festivities were on Saturday, and we all went to my aunt and uncle's house for it. One of my cousins got droplets of hot oil all over himself from the turkey he was frying, and a few family members were sick... but my cousin's fine and everybody else was doing well. And the food was, as usual, really good.

Wee for other fun things! Went to a Halloween party at *starglo21 and *xelf's on Saturday, and it was great fun! Lotsa people showed up, including =chdwck, ~Irulia, ~Arribus, ~Kaityn80, and ~Rhaycen. There was yummy Cuban pork roast, mulled cider, blackberry pie, pumpkin bread, and many other good eatables. And good company and conversation. Definitely a happy weekend. Then it was *xelf's birthday on Tuesday, and he appears to like his present from me too. ^..^

Then today I found something cool and interesting; well, my assistant did, really, but I think it's good. Fun facts about the day you were born! I am *quite* glad to be alive. This past Saturday, I was getting some errands run, the last of which was going to be getting my car a checkup (oil and filter change, fluid refill, etc), which I have a coupon for. The first Midas I went to couldn't take me for another 2 hours, and turned out not to be the one I had the coupon for anyway, so I left. About 30 seconds from Midas #2, I hear this horrible noise from under the hood and the car stops accelerating. I push the pedal, the RPM meter goes up like usual, but my speed keeps going down.

On a major roadway. 0..o

So, fearing for my life, I get the car pulled over into a parking lot and turn it off. I figure maybe if I let it sit a bit, it will calm down and behave. I do, and it does, and I get to the Midas. Yay. However, *they* say they can't take me till Monday (remember, this is Saturday). I'm scared to drive it anymore because I don't know if I can make it home, much less anywhere else later to get it fixed. That and I wouldn't know where to get it done. So the guy gives the engine a 5-minute checkup, figures it's either the water pump or the thermostat, and sends me to a guy less than a mile away. After letting my car cool down, that is.

So I get there... and 2 hours later, they say it's the transmission (something inside is tearing itself apart, which was making the noise), and they don't do transmissions. RRRrrrrr. Then they talk to a transmission specialist, and they figure they can fix it, so I bum a ride home and leave the car there.

This morning, I get a call that says oops, my transmission needs rebuilding, and they can't do that. However, they *can* replace it, for more money. Now ordinarily I"d have just gotten it rebuilt.... but the transmission guy would've needed it for about a *week*, the warranty would only last a few months, and I"m supposed to visit my bf (whom I haven't seen in quite awhile) this coming weekend. NOT okay.

So I'm spending the money and getting my car back tomorrow at the latest. The warranty will be good for a couple of years instead of months, and I'll still get to go on my trip. I'll just be out $2200. Gah. Thank goodness last month I pretty much paid off my credit card, and that I didn't, you know, DIE or anything. LOL
