Working on projects is my favorite stress-reliever, and it's a fun sort of thing that doesn't require very much from all involved.

Anyhow, ProjectWorld is a club/community that caters to artists (literary & visual) who like to make things up. If you like to invent creatures, plants, characters, species, continents... anything that involves world-building. Dark Crystal began as a collaboration between Jim Henson and Brian Froud and a few other folks who, as far as I gather, decided to start with a world and create the story after the world had been fleshed out.

So ProjectWorld is about creating from the ground up, beginning with the inhabitants, creatures and flavor of the world. From there, the project has its own mythology, then its important inhabitants, then maybe a couple storylines. Essentially it has three stages of development.

Anyhow, it would be nice if the project could get a little more exposure, so please post the icon (: iconprojectworld : without the spaces) if you feel so inclined.

If you want to join, just send a note to ~ProjectWorld and write a sentence or two on how you can or want to contribute.

I was in Ohio for about three weeks. Got home last week (heh) and fell right into drawing again. Hopefully will be getting a driver's license soon, and going back to school in little more than a week.

Ohio's all right. Full of smokers, and I sort of react to smoke the way I react to spicy food. My eyes water up and my nose runs a bit and I cough. I didn't stop coughing so much until I got back home--where people also smoke, but where you'll see an occasional person on the sidewalk smoking, people seem to smoke absolutely everywhere and in great profusion in Ohio. Other than that, Columbus is a pretty city. Lots of brick buildings. It's like a cross of Texas and New Hampshire; big empty roads and buildings which are tall and old-fashioned, but nothing all that old. You can tell by the patches in the roads that there's some snow and ice in the winter. I bet it would be worth tolerating the smoke to see it in autumn.

I was in Ohio for a college preview program. This and this were both products of that program. It was sort of like art camp, I guess. It was fun; I'm glad I went.

Artists above were at the program with me. They're both awesome--go take a look.

I can't believe I'm going into my senior year.
...Funny thing to say coming from the person who seldom gets through her message inbox, but I sort of find it depressing when someone (or something) disappears utterly from the 'Net.

One of the first webcomics I discovered was Natura Morta, written and drawn by Abril Espinosa at sublunaire.net. She often posted comic updates on her lj, which hasn't been updated in years. I don't know if she has a deviantart site (none that I've been able to find) and the only place I've been able to find her art again is on the eigoMANGA site, sakurapakk.com, where she was supposedly published. (There's a short preview, if you're willing to slog through the first volume.)

I guess it was back in '03, maybe earlier, when I found her comic. It has a somewhat Mucha feel; I love her work. That's partially why I think it's so sad, because I can't find any of her recent work--after four, five years, artists improve a lot.

On a happier note, I'm working on another project. If you've watched me for a while, you've probably noticed that I'll make a couple of comic pages.. take a few months' break, and not work on the thing again. This is partly because it takes a long time for me to make the pages, and by the time I'm done with one or two, I've changed my mind about a character, or maybe a line of dialogue, and I don't want anything to do with the story again.

So I have to figure out a way around this--to just work on something and finish something. I doubt at this point that I'll ever be able to do comics for a living, but that doesn't mean I can't keep a webcomic as a hobby.

Thus far, I'm nearly done with roughing the book. I'm about 479 little drawings into the story, and even after moments of feeling discouraged, I keep coming back to it. It's called Demon in a Jar at the moment, after the Genie in a Jar piece. The Mother's Day Gift also has characters in that world. It's pretty colorful, which is probably why I'm so gripped by this project.

All right. That's all. I figured I hadn't written anything in a while, and that I ought to.

And, sheesh, 13,000 pageviews. When did that happen? Whoever gets the 13,333 or 13,500th view gets a pic. :]

Random facts:
1. I love Pre-Raphaelite and old fairytale/children's book illustrations, and seize used books with aforementioned art styles whenever I can.
2. I probably wouldn't be an artist (at least, not like I am today) if it weren't for the Monstrous Manual (2nd Ed. D&D) which I bought for the sole purpose of looking at the pictures. xD
3. Whenever I feel like drawing a picture of someone shouting/screaming, I turn on Van Helsing and pause at intervals.
4. Pippi Longstocking was my childhood hero.
5. I have my own mini non-fiction library, with subjects ranging from the history of the alphabet to herbal remedies to peat cutting and wheelwrighting.
6. I collect survival guides, and even keep a mini SAS Survival Guide in my school bag (it's great for winning arguments and last-minute drawing inspiration! xD)
7. I've been working on this one story since 2003, and all the drawings and notes I've ever taken for it fill up a drawer and two three-ring binders. I call it Mosslark.
8. I dislike mayonnaise intensely.
My website, comic site, etc...
I decided to change my website around a bit... so that it was a little easier to navigate, and now it's all html and image maps. Php was too difficult for me to tinker around with. I'll probably change it again when I see the flaws in the current "design." (And I use "design" in quotes because it's not my forté in the least.)

Next I'll be updating pages for this, and moving Fate of the Irefeil over there, and finishing that (it's not very long--only about thirty pages are planned in total.)
The comic script I'm currently using doesn't let me use different formats (for instance, if one page is 659x800 pixels, they all have to be 659x800 pixels,) or create separate comics. So until I sort this out, I'm using DrunkDuck. If anyone can suggest anything towards fixing this problem, I would be very happy.

Next, I have a LiveJournal where I post a lot of sketches and more personal or story-related pictures. Not that I'm abandoning deviantART, it's just that I feel a lot less guilty about posting and writing frequently on an LJ. It's an outlet that doesn't fill up inboxes.

Another project involves the concepts for my brother's game (which he's really serious about--he's even going to get a music/composition program!)
~Disojernen

Hehe, was tagged a while ago.

Rules: List 10 things about your art and post it in your journal. Then pick six other deviants to do the same.

1. I don't think everything I draw has a meaning, or even has to--it generally, however, serves a practical purpose for me. Either it depicts a character, colors, clothes, or it's part of a story, a scene or a comic page. That's partially why I don't find much use in cover pages and tend to forget them. They're like telephones--a necessary evil.

2. I like ink. From the chicken scratch style I made an unfortunate habit of seemingly eons ago, I've gradually become more comfortable with a wider variety of inking tools. Favorite is still mechanical pen, though, with ink and brush being a close runner-up.

3. I doodle eyes and noses a lot. And hands. My biology binder has a collage of hands that I work on every time I don't have anything to do. Amedea is also doodled a lot in the same binder.

4. My knowledge of animal anatomy is abysmal. To draw a simple bunny, I need at least five references and three thumbnails. Exceptions are crocodiles, alligators, and snakes.

5. An image is not complete unless it has been inked. At least, that is how it is for me.

6. Since taking art classes, I've been able to beat project deadlines more efficiently than ever (much to the chagrin of my Drawing 1 and Digital Arts teachers.) Yet, somehow, I've been unable to finish coloring a comic that's been finished in inking for about a month.

7. Ten things about my art? I can't think of ten. Let's see. Oh. In kindergarten, I remember that assignment where everyone wrote about what they wanted to do for a living. I wanted to be an artist. Strangely enough, I wasn't really into drawing until about ten, but I find it odd that art is still one of the things I keep returning to--I mean, it could have easily been a phase!

8. On the rare occasion, I want to draw dragons or mythical creatures. For reference, I snatch my brother's dinosaur and animal books and peruse the pages for inspiration. I think Baryonix and Coelophysis make good dragon candidates. Some day, I'll be able to draw dragons. Some day!

9. I don't express emotion in art--I try to depict it. Sometimes I do make faces in front of a mirror in order to do so.

10. If I'm not busy and up to my ears in art-related work, I'm usually unhappy. Which is why I promise to do things at poor times, only to discover that I'm overloaded the next week/day/month and never get them done. Ah, well, a full in-basket is good, right?

No more than a day, even. But I did lose my script... so I have to start that over again (and put it in digital format!)

We (we as in, me and my family) are moving again. That means packing and clean-up with emphasis on the latter. I don't spend too much time online except for working on my webpage, though I am able to spend some time drawing. I have a ton of books from the library in the town we'll be moving to (not out of state, or to opposing sides of the country like our last move--heck, still in the same county. xD.) But a really, really nice library.
Going to an arts-focused school, too... a small highschool (by city standards; no more than three hundred students) which is very different, even exciting.
I think that I'll actually be more available when school starts. At least, as compared to life-in-a-small-apartment.

Character Purpose, Role and Symbol

I like making character-based stories, so I don't have to focus on symbol and role so much. Instead, I begin with characters, and form the story around them. A plot-based story will begin with the plot and end with the characters, who must be symbols or have roles. A character who stands alone for a character-based story has purpose. Role and symbol are optional.

Purpose

A character's purpose changes and fluctuates. Like with people, the only sure label you can stick a character with is that he is changeable. By the end of the story, he should be able to turn around and be amazed by how far he's come or fallen. Yes, a character can change for the worse, too.

On choosing a purpose:
If you have an outline of your story, already, begin by choosing the character's purpose at the beginning of each story. By the end, how has he changed? Has he changed for better? for worse? Does he realize how he has changed? Does the story require that he change at all? Does he change anyway?
Is the purpose based on an object or goal?
Is the purpose emotional--based on revenge, anger, sadness?
Is the character easily swayed from his purpose? What kind of character does that make him if the answer is yes or if it is no?

Role

A character given a role has a special purpose in the story. It may be to teach the main character a lesson, to kill someone in the story, or to play Devil's advocate. Role characters are fairly restricted, but they are really uesful. A role character does not have to lack a personality, and indeed, he should have real reasons (even if they only seem to make sense to him) for what he is doing. A villain, for instance, is often a role character. Give a villain a purpose and he becomes more three-dimensional. Role characters are used sparingly even in plot-based stories.

On choosing a role:
A role is chosen based on X thing that needs to be done in a story to move the plot forward. How could the character fulfill the role?
Does the character's appearance, attitude, skill or job make him a better choice for this role? (For instance, a cook is a role character, and his role is to cook--and he moves the plot forward in that if he were not around everyone would starve... or maybe his role is to poison a significant character.)
What, if applicable, is his purpose?

Contest Info here

Mood: Busy-busy-busy
Reading: Collected Lyrics of Edna St. Vincent Millay

The second part of my world/story/character developing tips. You can read Making Outlines here. (click)

Word-building is probably the most obsessive way to begin a story--usually that's with the intention of having more than one story in that same world. Most people don't have the patience to develop culture, language, primitive economics, whatever. Sheesh, it's even a challenge to think up maps. So, I have tips for each, but only from the perspective of someone who is obsessive over the little details of a developed fantasy/sci-fi world.

A great place to start would be at Patricia C. Wrede's World Building Questions. I still use it as an outline on occasion.

Language

Made-up languages in fantasy worlds are as rain is to water. Mandatory--they just aren't fantasy worlds without Draconic, Goblin-speak, or even a common tongue. How would it work otherwise?! Of course, if you don't need a language for the peoples of your made-up fantasy world, then you have to have a reason. Sometimes that reason is good and interesting--but really. Esperanto (which you can learn here, if you like(click), supposed to be an international language, hasn't flown all that well, so why would a common language in a made-up fantasy world work?

Enough of that, though--developing a conlang (constructed language) isn't easy if you haven't taken at least one foreign language yourself, or at least, it's much easier to make a good conlang if you know a bit of other languages.

For instance, I've taken some French, some Latin, as well as learned little bits of Japanese, Maori (Cook Island), Esperanto, Spanish, Polish... really, whatever I can pick up. Most of it I've forgotten, but I still remember enough to implement it: example, Japanese use of affixes and the differences in politeness/verbs, Maori has an opposing word order, Esperanto pronounces the K in knabo, Spanish has a nice sound, like a lot of Romance languages... Polish has extra sounds like "dz," which isn't really hard to pronounce when you try it out (even though it could never occur in English.)

Getting to the nitty-gritty of creating a language would take more than just a journal, so I'm providing a coupla links to things I've found useful:

The Language Construction Kit - This is where to start. It's great for organizing what you want to do, even if you already have a pretty good idea. I highly recommend doing every step. Even the alphabet.

Fantasist.Net - Fantastic site with all sorts of goodies, from world-building to conlangs. I highly recommend trying their Conlang Phrasebook once you think you have enough words/grammatical structure. Also, they have a word generator. Took me some tinkering, but if you've done the Language Construction Kit, it makes more sense.

Culture & History

Culture goes hand-in-hand with the language. Isn't that partially the difference between English English and American English? The words you use and the cultural expections behind them make up the world you're developing. Of course, this is also where it's leaning towards messiness, because once you have culture, you have the history behind the culture, and the geography behind the history, and you'll soon understand what I mean when you're developing primitive elves in the tropics and advanced humans in the arctic (or vice versa.) Everything comes into play once you're developing culture.

So, start with the history. Make a time-line up until present day of the world. Example:

People living in the islands are wiped out from a volcanic eruption, and their supplanters find their remaining temples and homes--claiming such places as holy (or it could be the opposite.)
A young man finds an artifact in one of the temples, and claims that it give...

II. ...or draw a picture of any original character in my gallery...
III. ...or both.

I. The Villanelle
These have got to be the craziest and most interesting poems to read or listen to. Of course, they aren't exactly easy, especially if the goal is coherence. The subject is "adventure/journey" though you can throw "travel" in there, as well. To find out more about villanelles and how to write them:

The structure of a villanelle.

Alternatively, you can write a ballad. 'Cause I love ballads, too.

(Ordinarily, I would link to Wikipedia entries, and Wikipedia is down as this is being written, so if you have better links for writing ballads or villanelles, go ahead and note me with it.)

II. The Characters:
Amedea, Arilfen, Aroha, Belle, Dagda, Lamar, Mage, Mora, Moscmagus, Muirun, Sarandine, Savannia, or Kriina.

III. Both!
If you do photomanipulations or photography and still want to enter the contest, I suggest this one. You can choose any form of poetry that you like, though you will get points for structure or patterns or if the poem just plain sounds good out loud. I will probably get someone else to judge this category.

On a final note...
You get extra points for...
curiosities and surprises--if you work a character's outfit in a way that is both different and totally suitable for the character, for example.
drawing more than one character together, or using one of the characters in a poem.
asking questions about a character and applying them in the final piece.
for trying something new--i.e., trying a villanelle when you almost never write poetry, or drawing outside what you usually do.
following the rules/guidelines. xD

Rules
No nudity or mature themes.
One entry per person, though if you do another entry, you can replace it with the first one.
~Wren12 would like some critique- go check his work out.

Listening to: Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 Op., 46
Reading: The Big Elfquest Gatherum!
Watching: The Jungle Book (has got to be my favorite)

Stories are best in threes. How else could they be done?

Beginning--Middle--End

You could even go so far as to break it down further.

The Beginning
The beginning of the beginning
The middle of the beginning
The end of the beginning. (Not quite the beginning of the middle, though.)

When writing, I find that the worst possible place to be in a story is the middle of the middle. What on Earth is supposed to happen there? However, if you break it down even further, you've already got an incredibly detailed outline. This is literally scene-by-scene, and is essential for a clear storyline.

The Middle of the Middle
The beginning of the middle of the middle
The middle of the middle of the middle
The end of the middle of the middle.

I used to hate outlines--where was the creativity in that? There's time for writing freely, but I've never made something I could be proud of just by writing out of my head. Some people can--they know either where the story will end, or they know the major points in the story that keep it going. I'm too visual for that--I even forget the characters' names if they aren't in the binder I keep all my characters' info in. That said, I think that the best reason to use an outline is to keep the story organized. The fewer the tangents, the tighter the story and the more the story stands on its own. Side stories should even have their own beginning, middle, and end--so should flashbacks.

The best way to begin an outline is to know the idea behind it--is there a theme? Is there a point to be proven? Is it just a story for the heck of it?

Theme:

Beginning
Scene 1: What begins the story? What is the setting? What is the obstacle/problem? What does the theme have to do with all this?
Scene 2:
Turning Point: By the end of the beginning, characters should be introduced--this is a major turning point. Where does the story go from here?

Middle
Scene 4:
Scene 5:
Turning Point: This is probably the most important point in the story--it marks the beginning of the end!

End
Scene 7:
Scene 8:
End: By this time, questions should be answered--if there is supposed to be a sequel, then new questions should be brought up by the conclusion.

This one outline could just be for one chapter--though I wouldn't suggest that for writing a novel. I'd suggest it instead for breaking down scripts for, say, comics. Once you have the scenes, you can put them into pages, and further break them down into panels, dialogue, etc....

The number one most important thing is to be able to say what your story is about in a sentence. Take that other comic-project that I keep hinting at? Well, I can tell you exactly what it's about. In less tha...

...and things in the queue

- "Jackie" - Still thinking - Description I was given: "Jackie is modern, and is also a shadow mage. She is a REBEL. Med. length black hair with a blue stripe on the right (on the bangs). Wears baggy black pants with skate shoes. Normally wears a tight fitting band tshirt. She also has her lip pierced. Green eyes. About...5'8." Probably going to get to this one during the summer, unless I can whip up a marker illustration. :3
Done: Some sketches... but thrown most of them away. Bleh.

-Also in the queue - a picture of my RP buddies' characters and mine: Gabrielle Deziel, Quialiss, Slidth, Ash & Aubrey Deziel-Graves; I think I promised to do it years ago. But I forgot. Either way.. definitely not a project I'll be able to complete any time soon. But fun.
Done: Trying to find out what all the characters look like. Heheh... been so long....

~AkiraShimada's birthday is coming up. So, I offered to do a pic for him. He wants a pic of someone making graffiti. It may end up being a little late, 'cause I can't even draw hoodies. Lol.
Done: Some charcoal brainstorming... and getting my brother to pose.

An entry to =Cedarseed's contest. I'm doing a heckofalot of research right now for it. This has got to be the best idea for a contest... EVER. Hehe.
Done: A lot of the research and two character sketches.

15-20 Page Comic Project
Myths with Moscmagus and Kriina and some other gods. Mom was the deciding vote. Hehe.
Done: Story outlining complete!

My brother's character Veadur--a birthday present for him outlining his main protagonist in his stories. I should convince him to come onto dA, too, shouldn't I?
Done: 30%
