EDIT: Sorry, I just had to link this for happiness
Where the hell is Matt?

So, wow..I haven't made any of these in ages haven't I?

I am still lurking around but very busy working on Darkfall Online (and no I am actually not doing anything art related except the Worldbuilding I have done last year and early this year). Right now it's other fun stuff

Anyway, yeah work is very busy as we near the release (January 22nd, 2009! phew).

Painting wise I haven't done anything, turned down every request I got (even though some of them I really delayed to say no because I always hoped I would find back to my old self in the end but..nuh uhh).
Oh but Spectrum 15 arrived at my parents place and I am finally able to drool over it and bath in the fact that I made it in (such a huge honor, I am still quite flattered).

Been playing Warhammer Online for a while until I got super bored waiting for real ORvR sitting at 40 for a long time (my bad really for leveling up way too fast).

Now I am hooked on Guitar Hero World Tour (even though we only have two guitars, no mic or drums or so). I totally love the playlist (Mr. Crowley!!) and it's great practice for my weak hands too. I ended up hardly being able to move my arm and shoulder because after we bought it I ended up playing all weekend without a real break I still don't manage anything else but some songs on medium..I am such a noob, as where *henning is jamming along on some expert songs already (bastard).
But then he plays the guitar irl, so I got an excuse and I still love him

What else, oh yeah, looking forward to next year, lots of cool movies coming.
On the same topic: we just finished watching the Special Edition of "Hellboy 2". The Angel of Death is hands down the coolest fantasy creature I have seen in a movie. That design is just so totally kickass..seriously..

So, that were some random thoughts. I wish everyone a happy X-mas and hopefully a healthy and eventful 2009

Tips and Tricks for Photoshop Users
Separate your Linart in Photoshop
Basic Theory for Beginners
How to paint hair in Photoshop
How to paint silk fabric in Photoshop (PDF)
About Shadow and Light
How to use two windows of the same painting in Photoshop
Color blending in Photoshop
General tutorial page overview

Isn't it quite funny that some of my first longer posts since a looooooong time is about gaming not painting? Well it is kinda logical since I haven't really painted in almost over a year, gaming however I never stopped. Quite the opposite. It provides me with a welcomed emptiness of my brain while playing or grinding - being totally involved into something without having to really deal with anything else that might occupy my mind otherwise.

So, yeah. That means I have been downloading every free MMO I could the past few month - also included going back to Vanguard for a short visit to my lvl 60 monk and other trips down memory lane (like DAoC and AO for example). My I-net is currently also busy with downloading all the patches for WoW I missed since playing back in 2006 (yeah yeah I know....wow sucks)

Anyway, the reason for this post is actually something slightly different but reading a lot of forums linked to MMOs is a huge hobby of mine and I just find it slightly amusing how many people are linking FFA PvP games immediately with griefing.

For the not so geeky: FFA PvP = Free for All Player vs. Player Games (in this case I am talking about MMOs btw).

So, imagine you can attack any player anytime and try to kill him or her. Sounds like a huge fun breaker to you, doesn't it? Asshat player xy is just out to ruin everyone elses game experience with just randomly killing them left and right.

So, well. That is what we would call griefing, right? Ruining someone elses gameplay fun with being a total idiot.

All right, let me look at normal games without any pvp:
I am sitting at my favorite hunting spot killing rats (yay for rats!) Player x comes along who has the same quest or is grinding on the same mobs. So he goes on taking my kills because he thinks it's fun. Nothing I can do about. Well I can report him/her but that rarely does any good.

Or

Player xy is annoying as hell over public chat. Insulting Countries or making racial jokes. Some think it's funny, I don't. Nothing I can do about that. Report him maybe..

Or

Idiot xy is cheating on a trade - nothing I can to do prove it to the GMs (most probably).
I could probably think of more examples of griefing in a normal non pvp game but I think you get the point.

Let's now move on to pvp games with factions and level areas within which you can attack other players (WoW, Vanguard or EQ2 for example)

The same as above applies if you have a member of your own alliance/faction grief you.
On the other hand you might be able to get back to that idiot who is in the opposed faction.

But behold and beware if he/she has better gear and higher level you get your ass handed without a chance. Besides what would keep that person from doing it again? Being killed in any of those games doesn't really hurt so is no incentive to play nice or not mess with the wrong people, right?

Now take FFA PvP Servers for Games with level and classes.

On those you are mostly restricted to be able to attack people say within 10 level range. Good thought initially but the problem is that:

a) you see the other persons level and most griefers pray on the weak. Making sure they only attack people they overpower in level (and thus in pretty much every game - in skills. Since skill gain is linked to level).

b) Try to be sure to get the overhand in gear - too many variables that can just ruin the outcom of a "fair fight"

Once again, also hardly any loss for dying thus no real danger in actually attacking someone.

All those example in my opinion don't do anything against griefing - if anything they encourage or at least don't fight it hard enough. Luckily there are not that many idiots playing those kind of games but nevertheless every MMO, no matter what kind of has those.

Now take the FFA PvP approach without level and class.

I can attack any person I want but do I want to do that?
First of - I have absolutely no indication of what skills that character/person has. No idea how skilled that person is or how long he or she played. I also might have a harsh penalty if I die. So I am really thinking about the decision of just randomly attacking anyone I see or pissing them off for that matter.

Not to mention, that person might have many friends to backup on at a later time.

The other way round, if you decide to attack me without any reason whatsoever, maybe even being the same race as I am then be assured that I will call in my friends to hunt your sorry ass down for that.

Don't you think that in ffa pvp your actions count much more then in a normal non pvp class and level based game exactly BECAUSE you could attack but you also know that it w...

We didn’t expect this at all when we, me and Henning, started the Pixelbrush forums one year ago we had different plans; lesser plans than what it turned out to be.
We wanted to launch a simple art-related forum where the two of us could answer to questions that we kept getting sent to us repetitively, we didn’t plan on starting an art community, or this resource site you can see today.

So what happened?

Well, people actually signed up and started using our little corner of the internet. New suggestions would lead to alterations of the forums, new features added, and here we are today, one year later (per February 3. 2008), with 681 members, 32.646.675 page-hits, 50388 written posts in our forums.

We would like to thank everyone who is, for being part of this little community. We think that the fact that we never really tried to start something big was the recipe for success; this place evolved on its own based on what we had from the start, heading towards what ever lays ahead of us. We are saying “success” as this is faaaar from what we were expecting would happen to our forum from the start. It’s been a fun year, with great events where we keep getting amazed at the amount of activity and quality from all of the members.

Any plans for the future?

Well, since we’re rolling, we have some vague plans and ideas. We’re still taking it easy as we don’t want pixelbrush.net to be too complex or extensive. We want this place to be easy, fun, and educational for all of us. And this is something we want to hold on to in the future as well.

We probably want to start some kind of daily sketch solution (probably starting off with new themes 1 to 3 times per week). This because doing daily speed painting is incredibly important for any artist to evolve, and by having a simple solution and a place to post these kind of things in an existing system, might help us out to actually do this.

We will naturally continue our monthly events, as they have been very successful, and probably and hopefully have one major event, or competition within the year with possible prizes (this will be with judges only and not as the events).

We want to finish our first art book, featuring all works from the Events of 2007. (Sorry, it's having a sliiight delay because of this site and lack of time, but it's coming along)

So we now launched the resource and information site to go with the forum. We want this new addition to evolve and get filled with all sorts of helpful and fun content, and need YOUR help to do so by sending us links or articles that you believe would be educational or entertaining to fellow artists.

Without further ado, please feel free to visit [link]

[ opposites ]
"Imagine if anyone or anything has got two sides; good and evil, saints and sinners, light and dark, angels and devils, fire and ice, drunk and sober, etc. Use your imagination to make extreme opposites work together in artistic harmony."

This theme should open up for a wide range of subjects, we think. Remember that this can include anything from characters, to animals, scenery, structures... What ever you like, as long as it somehow focuses on extreme opposites.

Aaaaaaaaaalso, we had two winners last time (which I personally am really happy about). Both Lolita and Nickillus came up with super cool pieces for your Halloween event. Check them out here:
We are so incredibly thrilled to have a range of young and more experienced artist on our forums.

And for some news from my part. I haven't really been painting much recently. After a hard fall back and another visit to the hospital I really have a hard time getting my inspiration back. This also means that I pretty much turn down every commission request from either private or commercial clients. On top my hands never really went back to what they used to be..but enough of that. Here are some cutouts of the process of a piece I am currently working on (hurray for the fact that I actually opened photoshop for longer then a few minutes). Some of you might have seen some bigger cutouts in my scrap section.
As always, it will probably change a lot during the process.
Dive into the underworld and find your inspiration. All Hallows' Eve is the night during which the division between the world of the living and the other world was blurred so spirits of the dead and inhabitants from the underworld are able to walk free on the earth. It is necessary to dress as a spirit or otherworldly creature when venturing outdoors to blend in. But you can still look cute, right?
''Step Inside MS'' National Tour Brings
First-of-Its-Kind Multiple Sclerosis Simulator to the Beverly Center in Los Angeles

Wednesday September 5, 10:30 am ET

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--On Friday and Saturday, September 7th and 8th at the Beverly Center in Los Angeles, residents have a unique opportunity to experience a brief simulation of what it is like for those living with multiple sclerosis (MS) through a state-of-the-art multi-media educational event called Step Inside MS. The event allows participants to experience the world from the perspective of someone with MS and learn how they can be more understanding and supportive of the estimated 12,500 people with MS in the Southern California.

"Multiple sclerosis can change everything. The way you experience life, the way you think of yourself, the way other people suddenly can't understand you. It's a completely different world from anything you could possibly imagine. You just never know what's going to hit you," says Southern California resident Barbara Eyster, who was diagnosed with this chronic and unpredictable disease of the central nervous system five years ago. Even though an estimated 400,000 Americans live with MS, symptoms vary so dramatically from person to person that a veil of mystery surrounds MS like few other chronic conditions today.

Step Inside MS is brought to Los Angeles in collaboration with the Southern California Chapter of the National MS Society. National MS Society representatives will be on hand to talk about support for the MS community, while area doctors and patients will discuss available treatment options.

With Step Inside MS, participants interact with cutting-edge media and technology to simulate a realistic approximation of the MS patient experience. Accompanied by a trained attendant, participants enter a small theatrical simulator that houses a treadmill where they will be outfitted with goggles and sensory gloves so they experience many of the symptoms that people with MS often encounter, including unpredictable loss of muscle control and coordination problems, numbness and tingling in the hands, hot flashes, and visual and cognitive impairment such as memory loss and decreased verbal ability. The simulation also illustrates social hurdles that a person with MS often faces.

"Each person experiences MS differently," explains Leon LeBuffe, President of the Southern California Chapter of the National MS Society. "Step Inside MS is a first step in understanding this complex disease so that people living with MS, as well as others, can share experiences and better support our MS community."

A New Approach to Learning About MS

Designed by New York City-based events design firm, The RJO Group, Step Inside MS unites communications and entertainment technology with scientific research on the neurological causes and effects of MS. Step Inside MS represents the next generation of health education and a unique method to communicate about one of the most complex diseases being treated today.

According to the National MS Society, in MS, the immune system mistakes myelin, the protective insulating sheath surrounding nerve fibers in the central nervous system as being foreign tissue and attacks it leaving scars of hardened sclerotic patches called plaques in multiple places within the brain and spinal cord. In the process the nerve fibers themselves are also damaged. When this happens, the ability of the nerves to conduct electrical impulses to and from the brain is disrupted, and the various symptoms of MS result. Step Inside MS helps to show the reality of MS, while also providing a basis for understanding the treatment options that are available for those who are affected by the disease.

"I have studied MS and treated patients for 35 years, but Step Inside MS has taken my understanding to a new level," says Los Angeles-area neurologist, David W. Brandes, MD, Medical Director of the Northridge Multiple Sclerosis Center and Assistant Clinical Professor in Neurology at the University of California, Los Angeles, who treats approximately 1,000 MS patients locally. "Step Inside MS can take on a special meaning for patients and people in their lives by simulating the debilitating nature of the disease and allowing people to empathize with a patient's day-to-day experiences. I hope many people are able to come out and participate."

Step Inside MS at the Beverly Center

Dr. Brandes will be on hand, along with others, to discuss treatment options and how to find assistance with MS. Step Inside...

NASA has had cosmic ambassadors carrying a message from Earth for nearly 30 years. Did you know that?

Launched in late summer 1977, the Voyager 1 and 2 space probes each carried a gold-plated phonograph record with music, images and greetings in 55 languages. NASA's official Voyager Web site offers a decent overview, but GoldenRecord.org ([link]) presents an easy-to-use multimedia guide to the record, including music samples.

There's no word on what happens if the extraterrestrials that find either Voyager don't have a record player.

It's incredibly interesting to listen in to that collection or look at some of the pictures. Do it now

Ahhhh, we just got that lovely book (Henning and me were asked to make wrap quotes along with some other artists which in term gained us a free copy of that book).
To not mislead: no we are not in there this time round

It's really worth buying. Even though I am a bit disappointed about some of the write-ups (some don't really explain anything at all) - some others are just plain cool and should really not be missed. On top the book looks just really really beautiful.

Most importantly, the fact that Glen Angus is in there just gave me goosebumps. I think that is the coolest thing ever

Some deviants which are in there and which I know:

~dunkelgold =lolita-art

I am sure there are more, I know or at least have seen pretty much everyone who is in the book but I don't know if they got a DA account

You can buy or order the book here:

EDIT:

"ED's Certified Lulzologists are attempting to figure out how the fuck this lulzfest began and who is invovled " However I find this super funny

-------------------------------------

Whoever thinks it is funny to witchhunt people, well done. Getting a pm hinting me to this place really made my day (I am in no way in a well enough health situation to think it is funny and in fact made me cry my eyes out. So thanks again).

I always thought witchhunting and talking behind other peoples back to make them look bad is the most cowerly way possible. Way are you doing this anyway? Jealousy? Boredom? Fun? Spite??

[link]

"While Henning seems to shoot photos of Kyena to trace off of, the fact that his girlfriend never seems to be suitable for the web on any of them, prevents him from showing his reference photos. Kyena also likes to reference from herself, but is prevented to post her photos for the same reason, while every now and then, photosources for her painted figures or inspirational paintings of her works occur on the web."

Yeah, I really love to have half nude pictures of me all over the web. I am that kind of person you know.

Here are the nice links:
And here what I have to say:
[link]

So much bullcrap. I haven't seen that picture in my life. I have several reference pictures of myself in a pose sitting/crouching on our livingroom table and guess what. I am going to post them as soon as we are back in Greece. I am so FREAKING TIRED OF THIS BULLSHIT it's not funny anymore

[link]
This piece is what..about 3 years old? Yes, it was originally INSPIRED by that very painting of Linda B. Peachysticks actually washed my head about it. Overpaint? Hell no. I would be a really crappy overpainter or tracer if that was the case..don't you think?

[link]
LOL, that is just plain funny. I mean come on..once more. How bad an overpainter or trader would I be if I used such a reference?

Seriously if you are malicous enough and persistant enough you would probably find a somewhat fitting pose and reference for every single of the several million paintings submitted on the net everyday..

Oh and something else..get our facts straight:
Jen (=cypherx) ALWAYS mentioned that she does overpaints and actually does it on purpose. She is even working on a tutorial.

Just to add the obvious: There are step by step overviews on my website of pretty much every piece I painted (or in our forums) so go and see for yourself what a great overpainter I am.
Oh god, this is so full of bullcrap I can hardly type..
If the person who had fun doing this is reading this: Well done, I was finally starting to actually feel better and wanted to start painting again after my recent diagnosis..good job with totally screwing me over there.

I haven't updated my journal in a while and I am a bit unsure what to write.

Hmmm, first of all, a little update on my current situation (if you are bored or can't be bothered to read this just scroll down )

First of all, thanks so much for all the replies to my current journal, e-mails, pms and messages. I was quite overwhelmed.

I am doing quite fine. The symptoms are slowly fading off with a few being a bit more persistent. I haven't been eating so healthy in all my life and I am surprised I haven't fallen drop dead from all the healthy food overdose! About a week ago I got the final results from the Tests and it's all confirmed now. Not that this really surprises me or changes anything
You just realize how important it is to have a person stand beside you through good and bad, during tougher times and I really wouldn't know what I would do without Henning

The hardest thing right now is to accept that nobody can tell me how it's going to progress (if at all). I was never good with not having everything planned out and uncertainty scares me, but only in a few overwhelming moments

Other then that I still see it as a reason to live more in the today and not care (so much ) about silly issues. Even though I still get totally furious while seeing how Greeks drive!

I am not painting so much recently. Partially because of some symptoms and partially because I am not feeling very inspired (which is odd since I am feeling good and I am not the person to be depressed..it's just a general "blah" feeling).

However I do sketch and I took one of the sketches into Photoshop! Yay me!
It's gonna be called "Paintball fight" and quite different then my normal paintings in both composition, story-telling, theme and style wise.

Aaaand, a friend of mine who lost his cat a while ago (maybe you remember the pictures in one of my older journals), got two tiiiny white long haired new kittens. Two brothers who are definitely going for the cuteness award! I am allowed to cat-sit them every now and then

Sooo, what else..I have been featured in an upcoming Photoshop book (including a podcast), I made it into Exposé 5 and one of my pieces will be featured in the Ballistics Calender 07/08.
I am also going to do some illustration for Alderac Entertainment.
Unfortunately I had to turn down a request from ImagineFX for a cover Illu because I got the e-mail pretty much the day I had to go to hospital.
But I wrote a bit (together with tons of other artists) in an upcoming special feature/tip write-up.

Oh and I have been invited to both Siggraph and ComicCon to do Book signings. I am sure there are tons of other artists who got an invitation as well but I am giddy like a little schoolgirl about that. Unfortunately there is no way me and Henning could make those trips (Unless they would accept shells or such as payment for flights now..)
I am however looking forward to tons of journals with pictures from those events. Maybe one day I can actually visit them myself

Life is good!

Quite a tricky term isn't it? I just finished reading up on it since a few hours ago I was diagnosed with just that. Even though I do have two cases in my direct family, I never really knew what it was.

I am kind of swinging between fear and relief right now. Relief because I finally know what was going on with me in the past and the symptoms I had and of course fear because it can be quite a severe illness.

However, looking back to my medical history it looks like I do not have the worst case. I had mild incidents in about 5 year circles and they always went away. Besides I look at it as an opportunity to see my life with different eyes and eat more healthy

I mostly write this because it is the reason I haven't been active on any forums lately, not even my own and I won't be for a bit longer. I would really like to apologize for not getting back to all notes and e-mails and comments and hope you understand

I'll be in hospital for about 6 days for cortisone treatment to stop the inflammation of my bone marrow/nerves and have some more tests made. After this I can hopefully go home again.

So I see everyone soon!

We don't really want to compete with any other existing community/forum but since we get asked the same questions a lot we might as well answer them publicly

Today we launch the [ pixelbrush ] forums. Something we hope will turn out to be a nice and cosy environment for everyone with slight interest in digital art. Anyone is more than welcome to join

Once the book is ready we will launch the actual site at pixelbrush.net.

Speaking of, there is a lot of content already in the book but if you have some special requests regarding tutorials let us know. We might have time and space to squeeze some more content in (even though it seems to become larger then initially planned anyway).

Those are some Work in Progress cutouts of a personal piece I finally found the time and inspiration to work on. (yay for muse love)

The Workshop I made for ImagineFX is available as free PDF from their site.
I have to warn you though, that we are normally really restricted when it comes down to words and how much text we can write. It's harder then you think to create a halfway helpful workshop/tutorial without including everything you actually wanted to explain

Ah well, I have the opportunity to really explain things in the tutorials in our upcoming book Hopefully it will be ready for ordering at the end of February. Stay tuned!

PS. myspace is a really weird place!
PPS. Henning seems to get sick

First of all, I gave in and made a MySpace page (duh to everyone who worked together to convince me to get one >_&lt. It's at myspace.com/kyenah (someone stole Kyena already!).

I have also been thinking for quite a while now and I will most probably soon start a special initiative with selling my prints. Everything I will earn in that given time I will donate to [link]
Life for animals here in Athens (mainly stray dogs and cats) is really horrible. Also, the little cutie cat I saved and which has happily been staying with a friend of us since then is missing since a week. I am terribly worried and hope she is ok

I also added a Work in Progress I am currently working on (another illu for FFG). Once I am finished with all open commissions (around the end of January). I will take a break and start painting for myself again. I really need that and the experimentation that comes with this.

Finally finding some time to write something small here for DA.

I don't want to just wish you a Happy X-mas because some don't celebrate it and some might feel miserable during this time.
I just hope everyone has a few hours or days of reflection and calm and peace and maybe even love

I am having a very nice time here with my parents but I do miss Henning (due to all the computer troubles we couldn't really afford tickets to see both our parents and celebrate together).

Either way, my muse is still acting stubborn and I will most probably cut back on official work and hopefully paint some more personal ones again in the new year.
There are a lot of things I want to change about myself in 2007 and I hope I can actually stick to all those decisions.

Thanks for all the support and the comments and feedback everyone provides here. I have been very lazy with answering on DA and in general and I really would like to apologize for that. It's still quite overwhelming at times to get so much comments/pms and or e-mails and it's probably something I will never get used to

So, wherever you are I wish you a wonderful and happy time <3

UPDATE:
My data is fine and has been copied to the new HD Thanks for all the comments though! It was still a hassle to get that new computer and I am calming down ones it is here and save and working

My internet access is still very limited. Can't properly check mails or answer them.

Here is what happened the past few days:

We had computer parts chosen and ordered to be built together at e-shop.gr here in Greece. Ok, no big deal. We ordered on Friday and they said it should be read by Thursday. So I am starting to be patient (or I tried at least).
So on Thursday a Greek friend of mine calls them to ask if the computer is ready to pickup. They tell him that the memory and psu are out of stock and that they don't know if they get it in again. Errr? Ok..

So Henning went down there and talked to them. Then obviously they did have the memory and the psu but we needed a different motherboard..So Henning picked a new one (even better one) and was told it is ready by Monday.

Yay, ok. I am looking forward to get my computer on Monday. So Henning went and picked it up and all looks good. Until the guys at work installed Windows and realize that the new HD is damaged. Yay again..

So Henning goes back to the shop to ask them to check it but it's of course too late for Greeks to work and they are already gone.
So this Morning he went back to e-shop only to learn that they sent the HD to another place to check and fix. So he got me a new one (250 instead of 300 giga).

Now the guys are reinstalling everything again and I was just informed that my old HD with my paintings and pretty much everthing linked to my artwork including brushes and textures might be damaged and that they will have to copy it and try a recovery program.

I mean WTH?

I am writing this from Hennings computer..can't upload anything or download my e-mails properly so bare with me..

I haven't been online much lately because my computer was acting up really weird on me. Now finally it happened. My beloved computer gave up and I need a new one. Since we are always a bit struggling I am not sure when and what kind of computer I can get.

Obviously the motherboard died and since it is quite an old one I can't just get a new one. It's cheaper to just get a new computer. If only people would pay their bills faster

The timing couldn't be worse either. I finally was finding back to my old spirits and inspiration and was working on a promising new book cover..ah well..

I am guessing it will be a while until I'll be online again (writing this from Hennings computer)

I just hope I can get the files on my HDs somehow...

I actually opened Photoshop and kept it open for a while (yay me) and that is what it looked like a minute ago:

A painting I am working on for FFG and the Call of Cthulhu Trading Card Game (in small and bigger window), a photo I really like from our vacation on Hydra and a sketch thingie in the background. I decided do venture back into the lineart comic fun every now and then. It's kinda relaxing for me and I miss doing lineart
Who knows I even might post something here on DA anytime soon.

And I must say since a few days I am really happy camper again. The Pain I was writing about a few month ago has finally been getting better The Trip to Switzerland paid off and my doctor finally seemed to figure out what my problem was/is. I really can't explain how awesome it is to not be in pain 24/7 - it's like having a new life

Even though I haven't been posting any paintings lately I have been pretty busy with writing several articles for different kind of magazines. Two of them being for the latest issie of ImagineFX (which features a really beautiful cover by Benita aka ~dunkelgold ).

Oh and I finally saw FF: Advent Children (loved loved loved it!) We got it on DVD as a present for Henning aaaaaaaaand if you like the FF series you really should buy Enchanted Arms for the Xbox 360 (if you have one). Pretty cool game

I just have the urge of ranting again and I am just not feeling too well all together right now so that probably doesn't help either:

I am fed up with people copying my website layout without even mentioning anything. You know, it actually does piss me off less if someone uses my paintings for a signature then if someone uses my layout. I mean I DO give credit to the original wordpress theme on my website because I think it's common courtesy:

"Who made your website?
I coded it myself. It is built entirely around Wordpress 2.1 and uses the Rusty Theme as base which was modified and adjusted by myself.

Also a word to people who reuse layout ideas and text from this site: I don’t mind at all but keep in mind that every decision I make and every text I write is who I am and therefor makes this site part of me. Maybe ask yourself if your own website needs a bit more of yourself too."

That is the text on my website. So ok, I DID say that I don't mind but I didn't really expect people to copy it that closely.

Besides that, I am also fed up with having to compare to "2d" artists that use tons of photosbrushes, 3D and pictures in their paintings. Or copy a certain well known artist so closely that it hurts. It actually lead to the fact that I am so fed up with my own art that I haven't been painting in ages and that I don't feel any inspiration or motivation to do so anymore.

It seems that nowadays you need to paint as realistically as possible (thus using photobrushes, paintovers and a lot of 3D to start with) to actually compete. It just makes me feel that fully painted artwork is not appreciated anymore and obviously can't compete anymore either.

Basically you either need to belong to the realistic crowd or to the stylized crowd and I feel I belong in the middle which is to some neither fish nor bird.

I am currently rethinking my style and my technique - which means that if I actually find my motivation again I might come back with a pretty different style then I used to have.

Sorry for the whining once more but it helps me to feel a bit better to write this down.

=henning and myself have been working on our own book for a while now. We want it to be special and different. It will not be the normal gallery display or tutorial book.

The book will be seperated into different parts: General information about digital art and tools that are helpful (hardwares/software), our own experience with commissions and funny happenings we came across, gallery and step by steps, some of our more important tutorials and it will also feature a guest gallery from artist friends. In general it will be filled with personal experience and show our view of many things concerning the art community and digital art.

On top of all those information we will show you how we both started out and how our art has been developed over the past few years

Since we both get often asked the same questions over and over by e-mail we will make sure to include those in the book as well.

Now - is there anything in particular you wanted to see in such a book in addition to what I mentioned? Anything that you miss in other digital fantasy art books?

let us know

Back in the burning heat of Athens I already miss the soothing clean sky and sea breeze filled air of Norway. But we had enough time to tank a lot of freshness to take back with us and I hope it lasts for a while

We bought a calibration software called "huey" and boy it's so helpful. I am seriously shocked how muddy and towned down my paintings look on my screen now Totally NOT what they used to look on my screen and it leaves me with a horrible fear of what everyone saw them for.

As soon as I can sit down and paint a bit more then a few minutes without haveing the pain back I try to correct my older paintings. God knows they need it..

In addition to the interview I mentioned before my vacation there are several interviews up at a new site called kreativika.com. You will find many familiar names on there and many interesting reads (including my ramblings about myself). I enjoyed the fact that I could read through those interviews many of the artists being personal friends of mine

So, I probably have the time to post some pictures from this years Norway Excursion within the next few days. Stay tunned if you dare

Now, I will have to spend about a week to read through all the e-mails and notes and comments (got around 250 e-mails to read through )

To those of you waiting for answers to your notes: I'll get back to you as soon as possible, promised!

Not only because of my wrist but also because I am overthinking a lot of what kind of art I want to do in the future. On major goal for me is to not be a copy or someone else or be influenced by someone elses art too much and I am currently trying out and deciding where I want to head with my style.

But that's just on the side.

There is an interview up with me on digital-tutors.com. Head on over if you are interested in reading

IMPORTANT: I JUST NOTICED I SCREWED UP WITH SOME TEXT WHERE I SAID THAT HENNING IS INVALUBLE TO ME WHERE INSTEAD I MEANT VALUABLE. THAT'S A TYPO FROM MY SIDE AND I ALREADY WROTE THE SITE TO ASK THEM TO CORRECT IT.

Additionally I will most probably have my own little column and section on a German Art Magazine soon.
Hopefully everyone is doing fine and enjoying the summer.

So here we go
I am still alive. First of all thanks a lot for all the comments guys and girls. It always makes my day to read what you think and your input is really important for me, even though I am a bit quiet lately for several reasons.

First of all, I have troubles with my wrist. The pain was incredibly a few days ago so I wrote all my clients and asked them for some recovery time. I haven't touched a pen since then and it gets slowly better. I still mostly use my left hand (which is a pain).

On a lighter note: We went to the Zoo again last Sunday. I really love the one here in Greece. They take great care of the animals and also have several programs for animals they find and for taking care of hurt ones.

I am specially in love with the otter they have there. I could spend hours sitting and watching that little fellow play and swim around. We had a little fight for my flip-flop too. For some reason he really fell in love with that one. It looks quite nasty on the picture but as a matter of fact he was pretty careful to not bite too hard. He pressed through the fence and was begging for cuddles and petting too. Isn't he totally adorable? Henning had to bribe me away from his area..and he took that pictures with me in it, obviously

Or the grounddogs (or whatever they are called).
I shoot about 300 pictures that day of which some you can see here. They also have white lions and I have some more super cool shots of them as well.

Oh, and it's my birthday today. I got a x-box 360 from Henning! yay!!

Soooooo..
I answered a few interview questions for a bigger website and they are actually going to hand out so called inspirational cards at events like Siggraph from featured artists.

Now, if you could answer my little poll (my first one too!!) about which painting of mine you would like to see on those cards, I would be very thankful since I have to decide which to send in for them myself. After seeing my paintings for that long I can't really judge them anymore.
Many thanks in advance!

On another note:
I had my second dentist appointment yesterday. The first visit was pretty ok. Just some cleaning and he found some minor holes - nothing wrong with my wisdom teeth at all (yay!). So yesterday he just drilled some of the minor ones and next week I have the last two fixed and then everything will be fine

I am also a bit proud that one of my paintings for the Game of Thrones Card Game has been chosen to be used on all the expansion boxes and sachets.

After slacking a bit this week I have a lot of work coming up again and should be diving into it right away..but I reinstalled EQ2 and am actually enjoying it more then I should..

And another question: Is someone going to the Conflux Art Show in Canberra, Australia?

Oh my, I have a dentist appointment on Friday evening and I am so totally TOTALLY scared of going there..

I haven't been to the dentist in literally AGES.
Henning however found this guy who has special programs for people with dentist phobia (I wonder if that word exists..) and he is taking me there.
It's not that I have teeth ache or so but I do have all my wisdom teeth and I think they give way too much pressure on my jaw. I also think I might have some holes..and other stuff to fix. I just hope he doesn't break out in laughter if he sees the condition.

Oh god, I am such a sissy
And besides I also wrote this to get rid of all those pictures of myself on the journal page.

EDIT: I just got myself a flickr account . Not quite sure what for - but I already uploaded some personal pictures there and more will follow (the HD is overflowing with a collection of more then a year of images and impressions )

And mmmmmmm I love the Korn song "coming undone"
I reinstalled my system yesterday (what a pain..) but I can actually work normally again now.
I managed to send some gift packages to friends (some of you probably read this now ) but I actually planned on sending more (damn it's so expensive to send packages nowadays and I wish I could have sent more (specially to overseas...). Ah well, for everyone else, here are some impressions from my trip (just crazy stuff!): Test stuff I took with our new camera, my godchild and her mom, my parents and some pics of my new haircut (not much a difference but oh god it's so easier to get ready in time now, yay for bedhead hairdo's )

Sorry for not replying to comments and notes lately. I have been spending some time with my parents and friends here in Switzerland and will be back to my old babbling self around Friday (I guess).

Limited access to the comp sucks but my Dad needs it for actual work (gah something else then painting exists!)

Besides that - I got a new hairdo - yay for being brave
No red this time but black and blonde and a different cut - kinda cool I think.
Besides this I went and saw my little godchild (3.5 years) doing her ballet lessons. Oh my god, it was so overly cute to watch those little girls in their pink tutus try to immitate their teacher..I should have brought my new camera but they were distracted enough as it was (imagine the attempt to try to teach ballet to a bag of fleas heheheh).

I'll probably upload some tests with our new canon eos when I am back. I was bug hunting and managed to take some interesting shots

So, tomorrow I need to send off some packages that are long overdue with swiss chocolate and some other goodies to friends. I am still waiting for a print to arrive which I have to include..damn I hope it gets here in time >_<
blah I am obviously too dumb to find the policy myself
Seems the copyright is there: [link] However I don't think it's so cool to have to search that and THEN e-mail them about art they used which is copyrighted by contract..
It's not my job to hunt down sites that use my clients images..
And, it would be nice to see a link to the artist. I really want to know who did some of those!

Hmm yeah, while looking for some background information for an illustration I am working on I came across this russian avatar site.
Since I don't understand russian: Is there ANY copyright information on that site?

I have seen artwork from the following people up there (including some of mine) after only a few minutes of browsing:

It's going to be a while until I am uploading something new.
Everything I am working and going to work on the next few weeks/month is under NDA, which means I can't show anything until the project is actually going public.

Once more I am also going to be quite stressed with deadlines (I hate when that happens) since as always everything comes the same time

On a lighter note, I hope I can squeeze a week of vacation in Switzerland in. I am planning to visite my friends and family on the start of May aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand I am going to pick up our brandnew camera!! Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeel! One of the latest Canon Eos D

I am not a big fan of the tagging games on this site but *Bensaret is a good friend and I am trying to think of six pretty random and strange facts about me. I am not going to tag anyone but if you always wanted to have a reason to write six strange random things in your journal and read this: concern yourself tagged.

Fact 1:
I remember people by special songs. Each person I got to know personally or on a deeper level I link to a song to remember them yet I wouldn't know what song to pick for myself..

Fact 2:
I don't like watching animal movies because they always make me cry (either because it's so cute and happy or sad). I cried my eyes out after watching King Kong and felt totally miserable for hours.

Fact 3:
I used to do a lot of sports in Switzerland. When I was younger I did downhill skiing competitively, the same goes for tennis. I played fastpitch Softball for the Swiss Nation Team and went to several European Cups including European Championships.
Before I left Switzerland I also used to teach little children skiing during wintertime and tennis during summertime.

Fact 4:
I love to make wierd sounds for no obvious reasons and during the most ackward moments. For example: Seal sounds and clapping my hands together in a restaurant Or start quacking when it's pretty silent and me and Henning are both working on the computer.

Fact 5:
I don't mind teaching (used to teach webdesign for 3 years) or talk in front of audience but I absolutely hate to walk through a bunch of people looking at me. Worst case scenario: Coming into a restaurant and having to walk all the way through to the table or to the bathroom.

Fact 6:
I am such a geek that I can identify a lot of Game Themes within the first few seconds.

I can personally vouch for the absolutely beautiful quality of the prints. Before the prints are actually shipped, they are manually proofed and checked by ComplexArts to insure that they are the best quality possible.

So go and buy a good friend or your kid a present (ComplexArts accepts Paypal as well as CreditCard payment). I am going to get myself a print of summer and hope my godchild is going to like it. I had her in mind when I painted it so it's only reasonable to get her a print for her little girlsroom

I am currently sorting out all the offers for the translations on my tutorials. I realized it's much more work then I thought and I think it might be better to split the tutorials among people with the same language. I would really feel horrible to put too much work on the people who volunteered. I am sorting it out right now and will contact everyone by pm.

Thanks to all the new watchers and for all the comments so far. I am totally overwhelmed from the feedback and from the fact to get a DD.
Well I hope it's not too much of a bother

Since I am getting more and more e-mails with requests of translating my tutorials in different languages (German and French for the most part) I am now working on just that.

I can cover the German part myself but my vocabulary/grammer in French and other languages would definately not be good enough.

So, here is the question:
Is anyone willing to translate some of my tutorials to their native language? They are normally not very long and it's not that much text. (For an idea what they look like go to [link] )

You don't have to do that for free of course. I am sure we can arrange something (maybe a paypal payment or if you like a print or something )
If you don't want to discuss that through comments, please send me a note or use my e-mail (n@tascha.ch)
The more languages the better

Thanks in advance! <3

EDIT:

I already got volunteers for Spanish, French and Polish (yay!!)
Thanks a lot to everyone - I am not quite sure who to pick since I have several for the same languages so I am just going to pick the first ones who offered. Many thanks to all of you though
It's one of those times where anything goes wrong...and where you think, hey it can't get any worse, right?..wrong..

First of all I changed Host and was working on a slightly changed layout. Unfortunately they switched the nameservers too fast and now I am left with fixing tons of broken links (including the ones I had linked here) - sorry for that in advance.

Secondly, Thunderbird just gave me the bird.
No clue what happend but I lost all my e-mails and addresses (among them important work e-mails and addresses..).

I got an error message in Firefox and restarted my computer. Everyghing seemed fine until I opened Thunderbird again. Bang! New account manager and everything empty. The joys of opensource programs..(I still would chose Thunderbird over Outlook anyday though!).

Anyway, not quite sure how to go about this. I googled some Thunderbird issues when I helped Henning reinstall his new computer but I can't find the file with my old settings in the Thunderbird folder..

There I go, back to fixing broken links and trying to figure out how to get my e-mails back.

But on a better note:
It's the weekend!

:: :: :: :: :: :: :: :: :: :: :: :: :: :: :: :: :: :: :: :: :: :: :: ::

I just need to write this down because I think it might make me feel a bit better.

I am so tired and it feels like I am getting some depression now. More then a year I have been trying to fight a bladder or whatever infection. Got antibiotics which helped a bit for a month but then the pain and symptoms just came always back. I went to a specialist down here in Greece they checked everything out but couldn't find anything that would indicate I needed more antibiotics (which is good though - I really hate taking strong meds over a long time and besides I am allergic to penicillin).

However the pain is always there..if I drink tons and tons (which means about 4 liters per day) it gets a bit better but I need to go to the toilet about every 20 minutes - which is also quite annoying. It cuts into my life quality a lot..

It doesn't help that the Greek medical system is totally strange. Go to a doctor then you have to go another place to take some tests..wait for hours - got back - wait for results - pick them up at the second place then go back to the doctor to discuss results..blah blah..I am tired of tests and I am tired of doctors telling me just to drink more..

I am almost constantly in pain and it makes me moody and tired and wears me down..
I tried cranberry juice/tea/tablets like the doctor said but nothing helps.

I am starting to feel bad for Henning - like I said I am moody which I never used to be. I seriously think I am no fun to be around either..just makes me feel even worse..
I am feeling without strength and I don't take enough care of our appartment because I just feel...so tired and powerless...

I just want this to stop...please..

Has anyone ANY tips or links? I mean for fucks sake..why can't the doctors not find out what the hell this is?

Ok - Sorry again for the rant - I just had to write this down and I am normally not one to share such journals..I just hoped maybe someone out there has some tips for me. I don't want to stay like this..

:: :: :: :: :: :: :: :: :: :: :: :: :: :: :: :: :: :: :: :: :: :: :: ::

The reaction on "Summer" was quite overwhelming on many levels. Thanks a lot to all the new watchers and all the favs and comments. I am still not done working them done but I am on it!

Something that I should finish this afternoon or late tonight is my first dragon. I see it as a milestone for me to start painting more nonhuman creatures. I started animal sketching in order to study some of the bonestructure and hope it will help me with creating more unique monsters from scratch. We will see..

There is a little background about that kind of dragon to go with the actual upload to the gallery

Eitherway, here is a short teaser with some cutouts. I'll be moving the summer closeups into the scraps section. My apology in advance for those who also get notified of my scrap updates.

edit: instead of the teaser you now see some close-ups at 50 and 100%

The first one is a short writedown about theory and some terms often used. I tried to explain how those terms are used in art and add some practical examples for clarification. This section will be expanded in the near future and new explanations will be added.
Basic Theory Explained
The second one is the start of me sharing little helpers and tools that help me while working on a painting. Like the first link mentioned this will also be expanded on the fly.
