It's basically a showcase of studios from around the country. Intrigued, I leafed through it.         <media:text type="html"><![CDATA[ This afternoon I succumbed (yet again!) to elaborating on what was supposed to be a simple sketch. For my friends who don't do much art, there's a marked difference between a sketch and a drawing. A sketch is a quick, loosely done preliminary rendering, usually without much shading or detail, whereas a drawing is a very finished piece which can almost be described as painting with a pencil.<br /><br />My problem is, I sometimes end up turning a sketch into a drawing before I realize I'm doing it, and so I end up with a piece that's not rough enough to be a sketch, but not quite detailed or accurate enough to be a proper drawing.<br /><br />Ah, well. Has anyone else done this?  I know there are widgets to show one's artwork on, say, Blogger, but I'd like to sort of do that in reverse, by funneling written posts/tweets/what-have-you into my dA journal.<br /><br />Hmmm....<br /><br />--L<br /><br />P.S.         <media:text type="html"><![CDATA[ Lately I've been painting in both oils and watercolors, and it reminds me of when I was learning two foreign languages at the same time.  One language, Russian, I knew fairly well, but the other, Uzbek, (a Turkic language) was new to me.  So I would be speaking in Uzbek, but when I didn't recall a particular word, it came out in Russian.  Happily, most Uzbeks I met already knew Russian so it wasn't much if a problem, but it was frustrating because I wasn't aware that I was automatically switching into another language.<br /><br />The same thing is now happening when I paint.  I've been at watercolor for a number of years, but have only recently begun t ]]></media:text>

        <media:text type="html"><![CDATA[ Although I've been practicing watercolor skies the past couple of months with some success, there's been a nagging feeling of "Something's not working right."  A bit frustrating, because I'd gone out of my way to buy the right brush -- at least, I THOUGHT it was the right brush.<br /><br />Turns out, I'd somehow confused "China hake" with "China bristle" and the two couldn't be more different.  Most hakes are made of goat hair, which are quite soft and swishy, whereas bristle brushes are generally made from hog hair: coarser, with a property that those in the know call "snap" (returns to an upright position, even when wet.)<br /><br />So when China bristle (hog) ]]></media:text>

        <media:text type="html"><![CDATA[ Sometimes I wonder what it is in my personality that desperately wants to capture the finest details in what I draw/paint.  The more intricate the subject, the more I'm enthralled by it.<br /><br />Feathers, hair, fur, leaves, patterns in fabric, wood, and stone....I can never just let these alone.  Granted, I'm learning to leave parts of a composition to the viewer's imagination, but I don't think I'll ever be one of those artists who masterfully makes a few strokes and call a work "finished".<br /><br />It's almost comforting, the slow, steady application of graphite or brushstrokes to build up an image.         <media:text type="html"><![CDATA[ I live in a digital age, but don't do digital art.<br /><br />Even worse, I almost have a fixated prejudice against pixels.  Why? The reasons are several:<br /><br />1) I can't just quickly pick them out from a palette box, because they aren't labeled. (the whole colorblind thing again)<br /><br />2) Despite having used a computer since 1982 -- or because of having done so -- I don't trust their reliability.  What if it crashes and erases a week's work? What if I accidentally press "delete"?<br /><br />3) The "layer" system is bad for a perfectionist. Much to my dismay, I've recently learned that if I ever make a mistake in Photoshop Elements, I can erase it and *gasp* do it over.  ]]></media:text>

        <media:text type="html"><![CDATA[ As previously mentioned, I have my own collection of stock photos squirreled away for when I need them, but I've been tempted by the various nice people on dA who have put up images, as well.<br /><br />The thing is, I don't fastitidiously copy photographs when I draw.  I have my own idea of what I want, and sometimes a picture will help me get the pose right.   So my main concern is, what if the creator of the stock is like, "Ugh! That doesn't look like (insert model's name) at all!"<br /><br />So I haven't used any dA stock -- until today.<br /><br />Hopefully I will get over this stigma, because there are some really great references out there.... ]]></media:text>

SO -- I went out this evening and got two more lamps, as well as some more "daylight" 100 watt CF bulbs.  Hopefully this new setup will work.<br /><br />Who knew photography lighting could be so ]]></media:text>
