Coloradoans, on the other hand, enjoy a slightly more dramatic experience. For example: just 46 hours ago it was 67 degrees Fahrenheit (20C); warm enough to put on flip-flops and have the windows open. Now it's 27F/-3C. The windows are iced over. Out come the snow boots.

My problem is, I sometimes end up turning a sketch into a drawing before I realize I'm doing it, and so I end up with a piece that's not rough enough to be a sketch, but not quite detailed or accurate enough to be a proper drawing.

* Doing art every day, when my normal output is perhaps less than five finished drawings or paintings per year, can be a challenge, but is entirely possible.

* My eye-hand coordination suffers noticeably when I don't get a proper night's sleep.

* When under a tight deadline, (say, an hour 'til midnight) it's best to depict a familiar subject or at least use a familiar medium.

Turns out, I'd somehow confused "China hake" with "China bristle" and the two couldn't be more different.  Most hakes are made of goat hair, which are quite soft and swishy, whereas bristle brushes are generally made from hog hair: coarser, with a property that those in the know call "snap" (returns to an upright position, even when wet.)

It's been two and a half weeks since I decided to set a goal of
making a drawing or painting every single day this month, and
I've surprised myself by keeping it up thus far.

Granted, not everything has been "post-worthy", especially some
of the book exercises where I've been focusing on technique at
the cost of creativity, or the days where I was so tired I didn't
think I could move myself out of bed (much less move a pencil)
but I've somehow managed to create eighteen pieces of new artwork
AND upload them to dA; now that I'm past that crucial half-way
point of two weeks, I'm encouraged.

Maybe I really can do this...

Actually I can, because for the first time, I can say that I feel somewhat physically older.  Perhaps it's just psychosomatic, and perhaps it's because I haven't gotten as much sleep as I should, but today it seemed that I could fully sense that this loose association of atoms known as "Laura" has actually traveled thirty five times around the sun.

Feathers, hair, fur, leaves, patterns in fabric, wood, and stone....I can never just let these alone.  Granted, I'm learning to leave parts of a composition to the viewer's imagination, but I don't think I'll ever be one of those artists who masterfully makes a few strokes and call a work "finished".

In my case, I have an terrible habit of fixating on how old an artist is, as if that were an indicator of what level of work they should be able to produce; so when I come across an artist whose work I consider more technically proficient than my own, and they're half my age, I can get discouraged.

Even worse, I almost have a fixated prejudice against pixels.  Why? The reasons are several:

1) I can't just quickly pick them out from a palette box, because they aren't labeled. (the whole colorblind thing again)

2) Despite having used a computer since 1982 -- or because of having done so -- I don't trust their reliability.  What if it crashes and erases a week's work? What if I accidentally press "delete"?

3) The "layer" system is bad for a perfectionist. The thing is, I don't fastitidiously copy photographs when I draw.  I have my own idea of what I want, and sometimes a picture will help me get the pose right.   So my main concern is, what if the creator of the stock is like, "Ugh! That doesn't look like (insert model's name) at all!"

So I haven't used any dA stock -- until today.

In other news: I am still having difficulties with the light tent.  First the bulbs gave off the wrong color temperature.  Then I didn't have enough lumens.  Then I got some halogens that were super-bright, but almost scorched the tent because they got as hot as the sun's surface. SO -- I went out this evening and got two more lamps, as well as some more "daylight" 100 watt CF bulbs.  Hopefully this new setup will work.

I put together a light tent today.  That way, I can take photos of my jewelry -- even if there's a dark, howling blizzard outside.

It's my first light tent, and I've been having a great time tinkering with it all evening.  Props, backgrounds, various lighting set-ups...the possibilities are endless.

One would think that living in Colorado, I'd be used to cold weather. Ha!

I'm in a bit of a gift-making frenzy at the moment. Every year I think I'll paint pictures for presents, and every year I fail.  Well, no more.  This time, I WILL do it -- and will share the results here, so my dA friends can tell me if the colors are OK. (The whole color-blind thing is a real pain...)

If you could only have ONE piece of silver Celtic jewelry, (I know, I know.  Impossible question) which would you wear?
