Possible Themes for a New Special

What's your favourite theme for a Hallowe'en 2008 Green Corner Special?

I can't do a real poll here, and I've yet to find a service that will work for this; so please leave a comment with your vote! Choose as many of the options as you like. If you choose "other," please let me know of any ideas you'd like to see. I have ideas for other specials, and the options that don't win now could be used in the future.

A lot of the options will require multiple characters. I will decide who will be featured and how many characters to include (probably two characters). I do feature the special on the home page of the Green Corner site, so I can't include everyone at once.

EmilyÂs entry explains how to create a comic in Adobe Illustrator. IÂve covered this topic before myself (here, here, and here), but I think Emily gives a lot of added insight. IÂm not a comic artist - I donÂt work in that style regularly and I donÂt use Illustrator that often - so itÂs great to have someone like Emily to showcase here. Even if youÂve combed through my former tutorials, you should be able to learn something new from her. I certainly did!

EmilyÂs tutorial is also in the form of a PDF, and a beautiful PDF it is. It is well laid out, easy to read, and filled with extra tips, illustrations, and explanations besides the main article.

She even provided links to my portfolio, my art blog, and Green Corner!

I'm really happy for the promotion. And it's so nice to hear such nice things

I'm Back

Green Corner is back, after an extended hiatus.

I also have a new Art blog which you might like to follow.

I will be starting on an Illustrator tutorial soon, while I make page seven of Green Corner. I think it will be of interest to some of you. I'll keep you updated!

By the way, I'm always available for commissions -- but you need to contact me with what you'd like for me to give you a price estimate.

I'm planning to start a print and T-shirt shop soon, so if there are any pieces in my gallery that you'd like to see, please let me know. (sorry, no fanart out of respect for the copyright holders)

Happy April Fool's Day!

The latest Green Corner special has two parts:

Shiny Red Bikini

Invisible Bikini

What? You didn't expect me to actually publish a nude image of Zalanda, did you?

My web server is currently down Unfortunately, this means you can't visit the Green Corner website at the moment and see the special as a rollover. I'll edit this entry when things are back to normal.

Spring is in the Air

If you haven't been to the Green Corner site lately, you might not have seen the new look. I've switched to a colour palette that is mainly lighter blues. The image on the index is different, too.

I will be publishing the spring special on the site soon, and that will be on the index for a little while.

I'm not sure yet if I'll be making an April Fool's special. If I do, it might be less fancy than what I usually do for the specials. I will definitely be making a special for Easter. I'm still brainstorming at the moment, but I'm hoping to make something fun

And don't forget that you can request desktop versions of any of the specials! Just let me know which special you want and your screen size.

Art & Work

I've been working on my print portfolio and résumé package lately. The lamp illustration is something I'd been working on as an addition to my portfolio. It will also be posted on my portfolio website soon.

I will be resuming inking of Green Corner shortly, with my shiny new pen
(the first one broke, I received the new one as a birthday gift)

I'm hoping to finish formatting and test printing my portfolio pieces within the next few days.

I'll also be starting a new holiday special for Green Corner soon, this time featuring the lovely couple Alshina and Koru, for Valentine's Day.

It's That Time of Year Again

With all the winter holidays around this time, I decided to make a special holiday image for Green Corner. Whatever you celebrate this time of year, I hope you have a wonderful time

I did have some difficulty when it came to shading the skin for Barudo (the muscular man). Most specifically, I ended up with two versions of his abdominal muscles. I found this seemed more natural.

While I had photo references, it was the development of a simplified way to depict the abs without making it extremely obvious that I found a bit challenging. I temporarily forgot about some of the artistic reference books I have and only thought to look at them today. But I think my solution works, so it's ok.

Of course, Barudo and Zalanda are the two Green Corner characters that I find the most difficult to draw, because of their exaggerated figures.

The concept was fun though, and I'm likely to continue doing special holiday pictures for Green Corner. It gives me a chance to try something different with the characters that readers aren't likely to see in the comic just yet.

The next holiday image will probably be up in time for Valentine's Day, featuring Alshina and Koru.

Please let me know if you like these holiday images. The more positive response I get, the more holiday images I'll try to do

If you want to see work in progress for Green Corner, you'll need to either be on my Live Journal friends list (I friends lock progress posts) or join the Green Corner Google Group.

If you are interested in joining the Green Corner Google Group, please tell me who you are when you sign up. I don't let in random members. Those application questions are there for a reason.

If you're not interested in behind-the-scenes work, but would like to know when new pages and such are publicly published on the Green Corner website, you can join the Midori Forest Google group for public updates. Anyone can join the Midori Forest Google group.

I will continue to add the completed art here as well, but keep in mind that posting the art to my devArt account will likely be slightly delayed from updates to the website.

Hallowe'en is fast approaching

I'm currently working on some Hallowe'en-themed art. I'll post a digital version of Aena in her Hallowe'en costume (dressed up as a witch) as soon as it's finished.

If you like the pencil drawing, don't be afraid to let me know. I'll only continue doing holiday pictures if people like them.

Green Corner Inking

I'm currently in the process of digitally inking Green Corner Act 1: The Bookshop.

I'm detailing my progress through my Green Corner Google group (sorry, no random members) and more briefly through my LJ under friends lock.

I will announce public updates (as each page is complete and publicly accessible) via my LJ and through the GC group. Possibly here as well.

Romeo & Juliet

Someone seemed surprised that the Romeo & Juliet illustration was really done on scratchboard, so I thought I'd share a little about the process behind it.

The Romeo & Juliet illustration was done on scratchboard. It took quite a while. My fingers were hurting from holding the exacto blade to scratch precisely. There are also scratchboard nibs you can get for scratching (they fit into a type of holder you can use for calligraphy nibs), but I didn't buy any because I know I won't get much use out of them. I did try scratching with the blade in an exacto knife handle; but I couldn't yield the same results. So I stuck with holding the blade on its own (a #11 blade if you're really curious).

I did scratchboard once before, when I was in grade 10, I think (1998). I tried to make a picture of my cat. I didn't like how it turned out, so I wasn't too thrilled with the thought of trying to use scratchboard now.

This was a project for school (college), and I wanted to do well. I did a preliminary sketch on black construction paper with white pencil crayon to plan it out. Then I made my own white transfer paper, using that to transfer the line art drawing I had done in black on white paper onto the scratchboard. After transferring, I used pencil crayon to draw things in. I found that if I didn't actually draw, the transfer would rub off from the heat of my hands after a while. This meant I had to start scratching out the illustration a second time because I couldn't complete the first one as part of the transferred drawing rubbed off. This made it difficult for me to be able to continue, but it also meant that I now had a method for scratching out the facial features. Practice makes perfect, you know.

In the end, I like how it turned out. The hair looks especially nice, I think.

For scratchboard to look really nice, you have to be very very patient, and you have to be gentle. There are a couple small areas where I scratched a little too deep, but nothing that really detracts from the overall image.

I have lots of extra scratchboard now (lots for me, that is). But I can't say I want to use it any time soon. It's a long and painful process.

Scratchboard is a bit more forgiving than pen and ink on it's own though, because you can easily add black if you scratch away too much (as long as you don't scratch down to the paper) -- with pen and ink. Pen and ink on it's own is more troublesome, because if you make a mistake, you have to use graphic white (which looks awful).

So I may do something with scratchboard in the future, but I'll try next time to take regular breaks to rest my fingers.
