NOTE: due to the extreme amount of content in this journal, I have broken it up for you mix and matching pleasure!

EMPLOYMENT:

Two months ago, informed me that an animation studio was opening up in Omaha Nebraska (where I live) and that the guy starting it was one of the previs artists on the movie Coroline. He was to speak after the premier of the film in town and to an animation class at the school I graduated from a year prior. I went to his talk, knowing I wasn’t qualified for the position, but wanting to get some perspective and insight as GDC was a month away. I talked to him briefly, went home and typed up 3 pages of my life story in an email and sent it away. The following day I got a text asking if I could meet up with him and it just spiraled into employment from there.

Knowing full well that I was planning on trying to get a job at GDC, he offered to pay me for 4 weeks to come in part time around my other job and learn the few things I wasn’t strong in, all the while dealing with the companie’s investors, trying to secure me a full time position. Those 4 weeks were insane. I was working 12 hour days, Monday through Saturday, all the while preparing for GDC. It literally came down to 13 hours before I left for San Francisco that I found out I had the job. As of today I have worked two full weeks at Skyvu pictures and it is amazing. Most of what I do there I can’t show, but I hope and pray that one day you can see all the cool stuff we’re working on. I also hope that I will hone my talent there. Unfortunately, I don’t think I will ever be able to use a regular tablet again. At home im already using a Cintiq 12wx but at work… at work I have a Cintiq 21ux

It truly is something you should experience o______o

GDC 2009:

Knowing that employment was secure, I left for what was now essentially a vacation. A vacation with the ability to network with amazing people. I left with my friend Case and flew up (over?) to San Francisco to stay with a mutual, yet equally fake friend Bryan

He turned out to not only incredibly light but also normal, and although he had classes and boring stuff, his roommate Keaton gave Case and I the guided tour of the town.

It was there that I also met up with and hung out with Kai and while he had important art rock star stuff to do on most of the expo days, I still had him long enough to lure into a seedy looking mexican restaurant and get him food poisoning. (those are lies)

The expo itself was pretty fun, and I did set aside a day for the career pavilion which I will sum up in greater detail then the regular show floor.

GDC / SHOW FLOOR:

It was pretty fun.

GDC / CAREER PAVILION:

This was what I was banking my future on before I got the job at Skyvu. And in retrospect I was pretty stupid. If you didn’t have industry experience, your business card went into the trash, or more tellingly, they told you flat out that they didn’t take physical media and to apply online. I assume that If I were to pass a certain threshold of awesome, that I would be asked for such things, but I am not so I wasn’t.

There were a few exceptions that I would like to point out in case somebody gets a google trackback to this page and that is the Insomniac booth, and the Ubisoft booth.

At insomniac I spent 1-2 hours standing in line just to mob one of the two artists there who were actively taking portfolios and critiquing them. These guys should be up for some sort of award. Not only did they have no life that entire day as far as I could tell, but they offered the most sincere and helpful critique somebody could ask for. 99% of the people in line were aspiring 3d artists, but I still learned a great deal

As for ubisoft, the booth was fairly big, but I did talk to a equally helpful man who was over all just a huge encouragement to me.

The rest of the booths for the most part were fairly daunting and impersonal, but you can’t hold that against anybody, and it mainly went to con...

the fact that i have only been spammed by one person is a testament to you guys following my page!

i saw the movie coraline two days ago. the first thing i must say is, 3d movies are amazing. i had always passed judgement on them, but even though the 3d use in the movie was more subtle than most movies, the trailers alone that were in 3d were mind blowing.

i do not care what i look like wearing glasses, because i didn't once look away from the screen. this is a reason to go back to the theatre again imo

as for the movie, i left it wondering how it was rated pg, and relieved to see it wasn't. that said, two crying/terrified children aside, i wish they had gone 100% adult instead of 50/50. the deep and dark grimm's fairy tail vibe was really great, but i felt like (having never read the book or graphic novel) it was held back - even though im not sure where

ultimately i found the movie really enjoyable, but i left it wishing it was good enough to be mainstream and hoping these guys are going to make their money back. this is almost an art film and it took 7 years to complete from what i've heard X_X

POURING over everything i can find and am learning a lot. i re-structured my website (basically took the splash page off so now it just takes you to my gallery index first, and injected a little bit of humor. let me know if my respective galleries are strong enough taking into account work not present. i have selected what i consider indicative of each subject - but i could be wrong.

also, if any of you are going to GDC let me know and we can set something up maybe (having never gone, im not sure how it all works) but rest assured you will be my LAST priority (unless you are female and single)

fifth and lastly. i've been doing some work, but most of it is small doodles, thumbnails, and linework for Res-wR and a mod. also, this week's Industrial design of the week topic is "arctic steampunk explorer" which the groundwork is already being poured.

sorry for the absence - december killed me artistically and now only a month and a half before i need to lock down my portfolio /o\

oh, and...
MUSIC you should be listening to.

Fleet Foxes - trust me
Tobacco - electronic stuff with really catchy and unique rhythms
Bon Iver - kinda sad, quiet stuff

its true, i wish i could celebrate this moment with some sort of picture, but i'm knee deep in art apathy at the moment. i feel completely powerless, but only when i think about it. otherwise art doesn't even cross my mind and it doesn't even seem like an option for me. gone are the days as this was just starting where i felt as if i couldn't produce art. now i don't even think about it. really the only comfort i have is knowing that eventually i will just swing out of this cyclical funk and be 10 steps past where i left off.

there hasn't been any other replies to my job applications, which i guess was to be expected. what is disconcerting however has been the complete and udder lack of concept art jobs on my job sites i usually check. i haven't been able to even apply anywhere since a few months ago when i saturated the field.

anyway, thats what i feel at the moment. no regrets. if your in the market for a movie that will rearrange you, i highly suggest "into the wild" by the way... its one of the most powerful things i've seen in a long time - just wish it didn't have 5 minutes of desexualized nudity X_X!

within the course of about 18 hours i finished an 11 hour and 20 minute long audio book of "ringworld"

this marks the second 'vintage' scifi book i couldn't put down, which confirms my suspicion that i would probably enjoy almost any scifi book i set my sites on. however i think what makes me go after the books i do is them having a underlying original and unique theme. for "the forever war" it was the effects of time dilation on somebody, and for ringworld it was the effects of having trillions of square miles worth of land, and what happens when everything starts falling apart.

the book was fantastically read, although i more than once felt embarrassed when my roommates walked by and the guy reading it was trying to do a voice for an alien, but oh well, it won't kill them! i'll probably go ahead and buy the whole series on amazon, even though i love the audio book format while drawing.

///

for those of you who were interested in my amazon s3 review [link] , its been some 22ish days later since i started uploading around 60 gigs of info at cox's upload max and everything is finally in its place, with a daily bit-level backup regiment in place to keep everything up to date. that means if a fire were to consume my house, and take my external and my laptop, all my music and playlist files, all my documents and most importantly, all of my art, will still be recoverable. also, it means i can draw any of this data if needed to any computer that has an internet connection.

when i get the average bill amount i'll let you know but as for now i feel like the final piece of the puzzle of security has been added!

///

on a final note, i think the carrier for this week's challenge is turning out much better than the fighter, even so i think almost everybody who saw the fighter thought it functioned much differently than it does in my mind... so in that regard oh well!

so woot, my roommate got pinged for downloading family guy via bittorrent... go open IP addressed based piracy -_-

heres the main part of the email - as the account holder i still have no idea what i need to do next :/

"We are writing on behalf of Cox Communications to advise you that we have received a notification that you are using your Cox High Speed Internet service to post or transmit material that infringes the copyrights of a complainant's members. We have included a copy of the complaint letter. Pursuant to the provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act ("DMCA"), which is codified at 17 U.S.C. § 512, upon receiving such notification, Cox is required to "act expeditiously to remove, or disable access to" the infringing material in order to avoid liability for any alleged copyright infringement. Accordingly, Cox will suspend your account and disable your connection to the Internet within 24 hours of your receipt of this email if the offending material is not removed.

Please be aware that the DMCA also provides procedures by which a subscriber accused of copyright violation can respond to the allegations of infringement and, under certain circumstances, cause his or her account to be reinstated. To do so, however, the response must meet certain criteria. Pursuant to section (g) of the DMCA (17 U.S.C. § 512(g)), you have the right to submit to Cox a counter-notification which, to be effective, must include the following elements:

(a)	a physical or electronic signature of the subscriber;
(b)	identification of the material that has been removed or to which access has been disabled and the location at which the material appeared before it was removed or disabled;
(c)	a statement under penalty of perjury that the subscriber has a good faith belief that the material was removed or disabled as a result of mistake or misidentification of the material to be removed or disabled;
(d)	the subscriber’s name, address, and telephone number and a statement that the subscriber consents to the jurisdiction of the Federal District Court for the judicial district in which the address is located.

In the event that you submit to Cox a counter-notification that includes these elements, Cox will forward your counter notification to the complainant and advise them that Cox will cease disabling access to the allegedly infringing material in ten (10) business days. Unless the complainant notifies us that it has filed an action seeking a court order to restrain you from engaging in the allegedly infringing activity prior to the expiration of those ten (10) business days, Cox will reactivate your account.

Please refer to this help article for more information:
[link]

Sincerely,

Cox Customer Security"

so if anybody has any insight i'd love to hear it - for everybody else stay safe - it can happen to anybody.

as for me, i kinda feel bad that the only movie on my computer i had to delete was "the fifth element"

in this blog, the author is undertaking a quest to find out what the terminal velocity of a balrog is falling into the center of (middle) earth...

[link]

that is bad enough, but my GOD read how brilliant the comments are!!! i'll copy and paste a few for the lazy lot of you... but these are seriously GOLD

"Jeff says: Gandlaf isn't an Ainu, he's an Istari, which is a physical embodiment of an Ainu spirit. True Ainu who have not taken on a certain manifestation in Middle Earth can take any physical shape they desire, so it would be impossible to calculate terminal velocity for an Ainu but, fortunately, it is possible to roughly calculate that of an Istari, which has a semi-permanent shape and form, which I would estimate to be about ~120% of a human in height. Gandalf is just over 7' tall, and we can assume the average human in Middle Earth is the same as on Earth about 5'10. Now, mass increase exponentially because we exist in three dimensions, so the increase in mass is not scalar and won't be 120% also. For sake of argument, I think we need to assume that Istari are proportioned like humans, so that 120% applies to height, width, and depth, meaning that the mass of an Istari is considerably more than 120% of a human. As an irregular shape, it's difficult to nail down, but I would put it at just a little less than double the mass of a human. A 20% increase in each dimension of a uniform shape (like a cube) would result in just over a 95% increase in mass. Of course, a creature that is long-lived and this large probably has considerably greater bone density, a larger heart, and larger lungs than humans, at least if evolutionary principles apply in Middle Earth, which is definitely unclear, given Tolkein's religious beliefs."

"Steve V. says: To add more complication to all this, let's go back and forget about terminal velocity and realize that there are other things happening if you can accelerate towards the center of the earth for 104 seconds. In this case gravity is not constant, but is decreasing towards the center. Offhand, that makes a difference of about 2% in the gravitational force at the end of the plunge - mostly negligible. What would happen if it went to the center? Weightlessness. And if the hole goes all the way through? Periodic motion down to the center, up to the other side to zero speed, then reverse and start back all the way through. How many seconds to get to the center? Need to do an integral... Then another thing is forgotten. The radial velocity - the earth is spinning at the same angular velocity, but the linear velocity varies based on radius. The balrog's sideways motion does not vary with radius (depth) and the vector direction was determined when he started falling, but the hole orientation is rotating with the earth. The balrog would presumably hit the wall when falling far enough. Need to do the complete math here - the real thing is that the balrog is doing a truncated orbit... Have fun."

"Eutychus says: Oh, and wouldn't there be updrafts due to hot air rising up the chasm, especially being so near to the mantle? (And it says here that under mountains the crust can go up to 80km thick)."

"some dude says: ...you are assuming the gravity and atmosphere density in middle earth are known. BUT ARE THEY??!?!?"

"Ian says: I'd like to point out a possible flaw in this... Balrogs are creatures of fire and shadow... so.. it might not necessarily HAVE a mass... Sorry..."

simply brilliant
