The fences are shocking white; the barn immaculately red. The latches on the gates and doors glimmer with a newly-minted silver polish, and there is a glossy 2005 Lexus SC parked on the shallow asphalt slope winding through the premises.

Twenty-year-old Phillip Fairfax is telling you about GFM and doesn’t see you staring at his car. He is sturdy, good-looking and short-haired. He appears effortlessly, though not haughtily, rich.

You try to call him a brat in your head, but can’t quite do it.

He is putting his keys in his pocket when you catch a glimpse of a photo keychain, an accessory that seems oddly tacky for a man like Fairfax. It’s a studio photograph of two children in ill-fitting store-bought Halloween costumes, a vampire and a unicorn. You think you can guess who they might be.


There is a lone stallion cavorting in the pasture. At last, what you came here to see.
