1. What led you to write?
I am always coming up with little stories in my head to entertain myself. Sometimes a story seems good enough to tell to the world, so I try to capture it on paper. I love telling stories, and one of my goals in life is for people to see me as a storyteller. I don’t know why, but it has become a lot more important to me than my art in the last year or so.

2. When did you start writing?
Hmm, I’m going to say around my freshman or sophomore year at high school. I’m sure I wrote some stories before then, but that was the time period that I have my oldest surviving piece from.
There is My Secret [link] Not sure what year I wrote it but you can tell it’s old from how different the style is, or at least I can Ugh, such awkward sentence structures. Don’t know how it’s managed to get 249 views by now.
And also One of a Kind [link] This one was published in the school magazine in 2005 so I’m guessing that’s the year I wrote it. Haha, going back and reading this was funny! More awkward sentences, like, “O my gosh!”

3. What does writing represent in your life?
The chance to bring my imagination to life.

4. Are you happy with your current style?
Yes, very much so. There is always room for improvement, but I like they way my style has been developing.

5. Do you do editing?
My rule is to always keep one day before the completion of a piece and publishing it. That way everything gets at least one complete look-over, at least one day later, to edit with fresh eyes. Nothing gets published in the “work in progress” stages.

6. Do you read about writing (creative writing books, grammar books...)?
Only the stuff people publish here on DA. There are some really great writing tutorials out there, like that one about proper punctuation with quotations and such.

7. Favourite genre?
Anything that makes for good escapism, but mostly horror and fantasy. Also nonfiction, like books about animal behavior and human psychology.

8. Favourite author(s)?
Oh man, so many! To name a few-
Michael Crichton- I love his sci-fi style. Very exciting. Read five of his books so far, also have The Andromeda Strain but I haven’t gotten around to reading it yet.
Terry Pratchett- His Discworld series is absolutely hilarious. I own ten of these books, and I will eventually collect the whole sries.
Ted Dekker- His Circle Trilogy is one of my favorites.
C. S. Lewis- I really need to re-read the Space Trilogy. Such an interesting story.
Richard Matheson- So far I only own I am Legend and a collection of short stories, but I will look up more of his work some day.
Rudyard Kipling- The Jungle Book is my favorite “coming of age” type story.

9. Favourite book?
Tough one. Possibly a tie between Life of Pi, by Yann Martel, and The Hyde Effect, by Steve Vance. Both are deeply psychological stories in very different ways, and I have read both at least two or three times.

10. What do you prefer to write?
The same styles I read most of the time, horror and fantasy.

11. Is there anything you can't write?
Romance and happy stuff. I’d like to try though. Hopefully in the future I will be experimenting with developing a pair of characters who are in a very loving and supportive marriage. So.
I’ve been putting off seeing this movie because I’ve heard it makes more sense if you read the comic first. Unfortunately, I’m still only about halfway through the book I started over the summer. School is killing my reading time and who knows if I’ll ever get around to finding a copy of that comic. I’m starting to think I should just give in and watch the darn movie. However, for your potential entertainment value, whatever you may get out of it…
I had a dream last night where I interpreted what little I know of the story to create my own plot! I have seen a scene or two of the real thing, but I have no clue if any of that actually made it into the dream version. Any similarities whatsoever?

In the dream movie Rorschach was the only main character. He was an FBI agent. He didn’t wear a costume or anything, and he had a really close cut military looking haircut. I don’t really know what he looks like, so in the dream he was kind of Japanese looking.
He discovered some kind of conspiracy in the FBI’s computer database, so he went on a mission to fight the people who were behind it. He set up secret bases all over the world, including in America, Saudi Arabia, and in the Himalayas. Most of the movie was people chasing him around and him fighting them. There was a fight scene in the middle where he jumped out of a plane and fought two guys while skydiving. He beat them by gouging their eyes out.
Rorschach also had the ability to create holographic duplicates of himself. The first time someone cornered him he used this to escape, but the second time someone shot and killed him. Then his ghost watched as people broke into his bases and tore them down or turned them into theme parks. He was pretty ticked off about that.
Later another FBI agent tried to figure out what had happened. He hacked into the FBI computer, but they had changed everything and the computer would only respond in French. The guy didn’t know how to read French, so he groaned, laid his head on the desk, and gave up.

For some reason when I get bored at night I feel like doing memes. This one has been going around a lot lately, and I have really enjoyed reading what people have to say about the creation process behind their characters. That has always fascinated me because everyone is so different with how they approach it. Figured I would give it a try with my main characters from Tabula Rasa [link] even though they are still fairly new (started it three months ago) and in the process of being developed. As you can see I tend to draw random inspiration from all over the place.
Feel free to ask about any of the other characters that have appeared in my art or writing, though I don’t figure they are that well known since they don’t make regular appearances in comics or OCTs.

Dog
1) Coming up with names has always been a challenge for me. Fortunately Dog doesn’t need a full name since he will never remember it after the brainwashing. I wanted something that would reflect the way he is being treated by Vance, so he got a name that most would probably consider pretty insulting and degrading (isn’t it ironic that man’s best friend has come to take on so many negative connotations?). Plus I figure Vance is very uninspired creatively so instead of giving him a normal, human name to call him by he just picked something stupid and went with it.
2) He came to me in a dream, way back in 2007. It was a really short dream, and he was just sitting in a chair being terrorized by some kind of mad scientist-type person, but it left a big impression on me. A few months ago posted a prompt to create a character that personified one emotion and it brought back the memory of that dream, since I realized that the scene was a perfect representation of fear.
3) In the dream he was a werewolf and the people brainwashing him were going to train him to be an assassin. I gave this some thought and decided I liked the idea of him being a weredog and a bodyguard better. There is just something creepy about the image I had of someone taking this dog with them everywhere and sharing a strange connection with it that intimidates everyone else.
4) Since the drug erased almost all but his earliest memories he has no experience interacting with the world and won’t understand anything unless it is explained to him. Even though he’s somewhere in his late 20s he doesn’t know what sex is yet.

Dr. Fredrick Jameson
1) Had a hard time naming this guy. I wanted something that sounded professional. I don’t know anyone named Fredrick and to me it sounds like kind of a nerdy name. Originally his last name was going to be Joyce, but I decided that didn’t work. From now on I plan to use random lists of people (phone books, some magazine anthologies I own, etc.) to help me come up with last names.
2) I had in mind one of my favorite character types for villains- creepily cheerful. One of those strange people who will laugh or smile at awkward moments and takes pleasure in messing with the minds of his subjects. Not exactly a mad scientist, but that was kind of the feel I was going for.
3) Pretty much everything has changed. The dream didn’t give me much to work with, but I think the scientist in it was a lot older and bald.
4) He loves animals. 1. In high school we had a class where we read Albert Camus’ novel The Stranger. Two people thought that I reminded them of the main character, Meursault, who I basically interpreted as being an apathetic psychopath who ends killing someone. They made me play him for a homework assignment where we had to be characters from different stories.

2. I also played Cinderella's evil stepmother in our high school’s production of the play Into the Woods. I got to make models of toes and pretend to cut them off of someone’s foot. Several people told me I was good at playing a villain.

3. I like to give my cats weird nicknames like Fatty Fat and Squishball.

4. I collect replicas of animal teeth and claws. I have 10 replica cat claws, three replica big cat canine teeth, and three real cat and dog canine teeth.

5. Though most of my gallery is devoted to art and photography I actually like writing more. If I could be successful at any profession I would chose to be a writer. Still makes for a good hobby though.

6. I usually wait for several months before I re-watch a movie. Waiting makes it more exciting when I see it again. However I have watched The Flesh and the Fiends four times this past month or so, which is probably a record for me. Just can’t get enough of that black humor.

7. When I was a little kid I pretended that I was a wolf by rubbing ashes all over my body to make if look like I had fur.

8. I found a tarantula the size of my hand the other day on my way to school. It was so big it was visible from the car. My dad let me get out and poke it so it would get off the road and not get smashed.

Just added another person to the list of people I am no longer getting updates from when they add things to their gallery. So far it is and
I only know that these people are even still active because their stuff is popular enough to make it on the main page. How am I supposed to know if the same thing is happening to people who aren’t that popular? How do I know if it is happening to me and people aren’t getting updates from me any more? Has anyone else had this problem?
I sent in a bug report a few months ago when I first noticed the problem and they said they would look into it. No change yet. Is it even worth it to bother them about it again?

Just thought I would throw this out there to see if anyone else has had a similar experience.

I have noticed some odd habits with the things I find myself interested in. Over the last week or so I have spent much of my spare time researching the West Port murders [link] a series of 16 murders committed by William Burke and William Hare in 1827-1828. They sold all of their victims to the local university, which unwittingly used them in the student’s anatomy classes. Can you even imagine how disturbing that would be, as a student, to find out later?
For a long time I have been really fascinated with serial killers. I feel that studying them gives me some insight into human behavior, as well as some interesting history lessons with some of the older cases. I also find this particular story kind of funny at parts (mostly the way that they were constantly arguing and trying to backstab each other, hehe).

Trying to work out how I got to be interested in this stuff. Watching b-movies where people get eaten by monsters with my dad as a kid? Reading books of mythology and folk lore (the older stories can be quite gruesome compared to the cleaned up versions most kids get these days). Whatever could it be…

I had a colored picture all finished and ready to illustrate my next chapter in the Werewolf Guide, and it crashed right after I saved it. Apparently it has a habit of killing itself and then raising from the dead again. Seriously, what gives?

On a more pleasant note, snagged this from a while ago.

I don’t really watch movies over and over again these days, but sometimes I did when I was younger. I remember that I used to watch You Have Mail, the remake version, a bunch when I was a kid. Apparently I was going through the brief phase of my life where gushy romantic chick flick stuff appealed to me.

2. Name a film that you’ve seen multiple times in the cinema.

The American Godzilla movie and Ice Age 2. Saw both two times. I don’t have enough money or transportation support to be seeing stuff a zillion times in the theaters.

Will Smith. He’s funny.

I have no idea. If someone’s acting is bad or boring there is no way I will remember them. I don’t even know the names of half the actors I like.

The closest would have to be Repo: The Genetic Opera. Don’t really know the lyrics, but I liked every single one of those songs. I want to buy that movie some day (for the music, not the gore).

I do not sing! Never again, never since I was a kid. When I was little I liked to sing along with the Land Before Time movies though. Ick.

Night of the Hunter. Probably the best use of psychological creepiness to create a horror story that I have ever seen.

Hogfather! I want to try to get my family to watch it this year for our annual Christmas Eve movie. They’ve never heard of it. The looks on their faces would be priceless.

11. Have you ever seen a film in a drive-in? If so, what?

I have seen exactly two movies in the big old drive through theater we have in town.
The first was Jurassic Park. It came out in 1993, so I was five years old at the time. I don’t even remember anything about dinosaurs, just eating tons of candy and getting bored and climbing on the roof of the car.
The other was Ice Age 2. Good thing I saw that in the regular theater first, the sound wasn’t too good at the drive-in.

14. Ever walked out of a film?

One I paid for? No. But I did sit in during part of the first Transformers move while I was waiting for a different movie to start and boy was I ever glad to get out of there. Waaay too loud for my liking.

Sombra- Like I’ve been living on the streets. I never wash or cut my hair so it gets all long and greasy, ha.
Stan- Your average, everyday gray timber wolf. How I miss having hands.
Ted- Tall, thin, with red hair and lots of freckles. Everyone says I have a very kind looking face.
Dog- When I am a man I have short black hair but when I am a dog it is all long and thick. Why is that I wonder?

Sombra- Bum!
Stan- Not exactly a lot of jobs out there for a guy stuck in a wolf body.
Ted- Oh, I do this and that. Never exactly finished my education, so my interests drift considerably.
Dog- I am there to make sure that nobody hurts Mr. Vance and to be a good dog and do whatever he tells me.
Dr. Jameson- I study the effects of mind altering drugs in the attempt to create the perfect, uh, servant for my clients. They keep me well funded and I don’t have to worry about those pesky ethical laws.

I know he shouldn’t be, but Sombra. He is pure evil, but such a fascinating kind of villain that I can’t help but like him.

3. Who is your least favorite?

Evana. She is too weak willed and allowed herself to be led astray by some guy (Victor) just because he was hot and interesting. He actually convinced her to kill people just so that they could have something to do together. Yes, her boyfriend is addicted to slaughtering people. Such bad taste in men.

4. Who is your most developed?

Sombra. There is a stamp floating around here somewhere that says something like “Villains Are More Interesting.” I think that just about sums it up for me. He sadly seems to the only one I can write actual stories for based on what happens in the original story (since most of this is going on in my head and will never exist in printed form).

5. Which OC would you want to date if they magically came to life?

Mateo, assuming it is before he gets married. He is very kind hearted and shares many of my interests in things like mythology. I actually had a dream once where I saw him, but I never got to talk to him and it left me feeling very frustrated.

6. How many girl OCs do you have? Boy OCs? It OCs?

In this list the ratio is 9 male to 2 female. Probably fits my overall ratio, so about 80% of characters I create are male. I don’t know why, I just like them more. No un-gendered ones though…

7. If you were stuck in a burning building what do you think the third OC on your list (José would do?

He would try to save me. He’s kind of a loner, but he would try to help someone if they needed it. Then he could add burns to his already impressive list of scars and injuries.

8. Name one thing you regret about one of your OCs.

Giving Jack his heart condition that will prematurely end his life. I like what it adds to the story (Metanoia), but I also think it kind of makes the story a bit too dramatic.

9. Which of your OCs do you think would make the best father/mother/it parent out of all your OCs and why??

Mateo. He does a great job as a part time stay at home father to allow his wife (Samantha) to focus more of her attention on her job as the Alpha of the werewolf pack. Mood icon messed up like it is for everyone else, but fortunately my mood is more or less the same.

Art computer still down, but the laptop is doing well and has been virus-free for a while. Nice break after that plague of viruses a few weeks ago. Don’t know when the other one will be fixed though. I’m pretty much going to give up art until then. I don’t think anyone wants to see traditional media pieces photographed with my camera and cropped on Jasc Paint Shop Photo Album 5 with no editing whatsoever.
Guess I could still do some more hand doodles…

Canceling kiriban for now. Unless the computer gets fixed before 10,000 or someone wants something besides a drawing or doesn’t mind a crummy photographed one.

Until then I’ll keep working on my writing. I’m putting together another mythological creature guide, one for vampires in the same style as my werewolf guide. It won’t be as long, just one submission since this is something I just recently made up instead of having years of thinking to back it up. I am calling them zompires, since they are like vampire/zombie hybrid things.

The idea occurred to me recently that it might be fun to offer a kiriban sometime. I’ve always been more comfortable with gift art than commissions for some reason. It could be just about any style or medium (or even a story or poem or photograph if that suits your interests more). I’ve only had limited experience with drawing really strange characters (mine tend to be natural looking with simple designs), but I would be willing to try just about anything.

I created a black wolf named Sharo that was the leader of a wolf pack when I was a kid. Don’t remember anything about him. Of my current “in use” characters it would be Erick.

Not counting all of the ones I invent for the writing prompts it would a werewolf guy named Ruiz. His development is coming along nicely.

In some sad sort of way, probably Bothkinds [link] It was like tapping in to some deep and overly drama-ridden element of my psyche creating her.

What is the character you've drawn the most? (Can be original or fanart)
Technically it would be Erick Hunter, with seven drawings in my gallery.
However these days it’s definitely Sombra, who has appeared in two pieces of art and three pieces of prose. Still more interested in fleshing his character out than any of the others. Getting into the mind of a psychopath has been an… interesting experience.

What colour do you often use?
Red. It’s intense. It’s simple. I love it.

Any colour you are bad at using?
Black. Hard to get shading right with it, especially digitally.

When drawing people, where do you start?
Sketch out the shape of the head.

What is a character only your eraser will love?
A lot of them. Been trying to think of a design for Sombra’s “buddy” Vincent on and off for a while now. Looks hideous every time I try to draw him.

Which of your works took the longest time?
Any of the paintings I produced in my high school art classes. Into The Doldrums [link] took many hours, especially considering how much time the teacher wanted us to spend on sketching out the idea first. I still consider it the best thing I’ve ever done. It hangs on the wall near my bed now.

What techniques do you use when you want to improve in drawing?
Mostly experimenting with how to color stuff in photoshop.

What do you think of the art of the person who gave you this picturememe?
Very talented at storytelling and character expressions.

What art tools/media are you good with?
OK with graphite, watercolors, photoshop etc. Probably best with regular old ballpoint pens actually, since that’s what I like playing around with most.

It is fun to make, but it stinks. I do a better job of getting the images out of my head through my writing.

Hopefully over the summer I can do some more work with physically developing these characters. For now I only have time to make them answer stupid questions. All from the same werewolf/werecat storyline I’ve entertained myself in my head with for many years. Sombra and Mateo have been through one of these already, but the others are new. The timeline for all these people is all over the place, but I’ll just pretend everyone is in the same present.

YAYYY. Another one of those annoying, overly long, but very addicting OC memes we all love. To start, pick at least five of your OCs and have them answer the following rather comprehensive questions.

Part I. Getting to know you. The dull section.

1. What’s your name?
Sombra: Sombra is all you’re gonna get out of me.
Raju: Raju for now. I haven’t been given a last name yet.
Mateo: Mateo. Also don’t have a last name yet.
José: José. Same as the last two. As you can see our creator isn’t so good in the “coming up with last names” department.
Katrina: Katrina Stryker, though to tell the truth I really don’t like that name.

Sombra: Somewhere between 25 and 30. Does it really matter?

Mateo: I like to think of myself as a “modern day shaman.” Don’t know if I am the first to come up with that term, but it fits so I use it.

Katrina: I think I’m pretty well adjusted considering all the messed up stuff that’s happened to me. If you met me for the first time today you probably wouldn’t even be able to tell that I haven’t been able to… be human… until very recently.

Sombra: Professional Spreader of Chaos.
Raju: Depends on what I’m doing at the time. Usually just odd jobs where I can use my great strength and endurance to make a little money. I live a simple life, so I don’t need much.
Mateo: Professor of Hunting Studies. Just a fancy way of saying that I train assassins for the American werewolf association known as “The Pack.”
José: Currently I’m being forced to… uh… I mean, volunteering to train as a member of the police force in the Mexican counterpart to America’s Pack.
Katrina: I’m still just going through home schooling, though my parents say they might be able to get me into public school soon.

I am now legally an adult in the eyes of society. Still working out what that means though. I don’t really feel any different.
And what a day to have it on. Too bad it couldn’t have come next week over spring break. I had to do my first dental prophylaxis (teeth cleaning) on a dog during lab. That was a lot harder than it looked like it would be, what with having to work around all those tubes and gauze and mouth speculums and stuff. Was a very small dog too. I dread to think of how hard this is going to be on cats.
On the plus side I got some great birthday presents. My 9th book out of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series, Pyramids, and Sharp Teeth by Toby Barlow. My obsession with collecting werewolf books will only grow stronger with time.

This is my first time to do one of those character meme things. All of these people are from my big long unwritten shapeshifter story, so most of them are werewolves and werecats. Unfortunately since I’m not good at naming things most of them don’t have last names yet. Will include a little info on them since I haven’t introduced most of them yet.

01)Who would make a better college professor, 6 [Ted] or 11 [Hannoia]? What subjects would they teach?

Definitely Ted. He’s good at getting people’s attention, so the students would like him. He would probably make a fun English teacher.

02) Do you think 2 [Sombra] is hot? How hot?

Oh heck no! He is like my worst nightmare personified.

03) 12 [Gregory] sends 8 [Marcus] on a mission. What is it, and does he succeed?

Marcus did some bad stuff but got pardoned for it, and Gregory tried his hardest to get him executed. He would send Marcus on a mission to kill himself, which is something that would not be hard for him to do since he’s already kind of suicidal.

04) What is or would be 9 [Travis]'s favorite book?

I dunno, probably something reflective and depressing like Hemmingway.

05) Would it make more sense for 2 [Sombra] to swear fealty to 6 [Ted], or the other way around?

Cool, new expression to add to my vocabulary.
Nope, never going to happen. Sombra has already tried to kill Ted several times.

06) For some reason, 5 [Evana] is looking for a roommate. Should she share a studio apartment with 9 [Travis] or with 10 [Stan]?

She wouldn’t be happy with either of those options. She hates all men so she wouldn’t be interested in sharing anything with Travis, and Stan would be a pretty useless roommate.

07) 2 [Sombra], 7 [Vincent] and 12 [Gregory] have dinner together. Where do they go, and what do they discuss?

Sombra and Vincent would be discussing how tough and old and nasty tasting Gregory is.

08) 3 [Samantha] challenges 10 [Stan] to a duel. What happens?

Stan would get his butt kicked. He’s a wimp and Samantha is a trained killer.

09) If 1 [Erick] stole 8 [Marcus]'s most precious possession, how would he get it back?

He wouldn’t. Erick would remind him too much of Sombra and he’s terrified of Sombra.

10) Suggest a title for a story in which 7 [Vincent] and 12 [Gregory] both attain what they most desire.

Hmm…
Vincent wants to see Sombra succeed in his plans and not get killed by him in the process. Gregory wants to drive out Samantha and Mateo and replace them with new leaders for the pack…

It was a fun trip, but it’s good to be back. You never know just how much you’ll miss your friends until you can’t talk to them anymore. Pretty soon here I’ll start processing and posting all of the pictures. Should be some interesting stuff- Mayan ruins, Mexican cowboys doing stunts on horses, and a few other random things.
It was also an especially productive time for reading. I got through the second and third books in Pratchett’s Discworld series (The Light Fantastic and Equal Rites). No matter how long it takes, I will own and read them all some day!

Hope Christmas for you guys was just as much fun.

Two questions first, and then we can get to the fun stuff.
1. Has anybody had any problems with registering for TinEye.com? They refuse to send me my confirmation e-mail. Am I just going to have to try again with another e-mail address?
2. What exactly is the webcam feature for? DA explains how to use it, but not what it should be used for. I would like to stick a random floating Sweeney Todd head in there, but I would also like to know what it’s there for first.

1. What does your deviantart name mean and why did you join this site?

I always have a hard time coming up with names, so I tend to get them from unusual places. I went through a phase a few years ago where I really liked Spanish because so many of the words are way cooler sounding than their English counterparts. I needed a name for a character who was a werelioness, so I took the Spanish word for lioness, leona, and added a c. Later I needed an online name for myself, so I stole it from the character.
I mainly joined this site to get more feedback for my art and writings. I’ve been to a few other places where you can post stuff like that, but none as organized as this.

2. What fandom were you obsessed with when you joined and what are you into now?

Not sure if I’ve ever been obsessed like that. My first fan art was for The X-Files, of Eugene Victor Tooms. I’ve done 3 portraits of him so far, which officially makes me his biggest fan on DA.
Now… I guess Death Note, Sweeney Todd, and a couple of other things.

Third year of collage is now officially the busiest time of my entire life thus far. I have literally drawn a few doodles in the last few weeks. I really want to get working on the String of Pearls version of Sweeney Todd I have planned out in my head, but I just haven’t had the time. Will probably end up looking weird and stupid anyway. As I keep trying to visualize what I want him to look like, I keep thinking of Sideshow Bob from The Simpsons. That’s messed up, but I guess Sweeney Todd would translate into a pretty hilarious episode of The Simpsons, Treehouse of Horror style.
Update- Got started on the Sweeney Todd piece. Hopefully it will be finished by Friday. I managed not to make him look like Sideshow Bob, though he still looks plenty weird.

Since werewolves are, with a few exceptions, the only thing I ever write about I thought this would be the perfect thing for me. For some reason I have found that my short stories often bring the greatest satisfaction of all my work to me despite getting much less attention and feedback than my visual pieces. Where I am often unsatisfied with how a drawing turned out, it seems that my writing can usually come out exactly how I wanted it to be. I don’t know if anyone else has experienced something like this, but it’s a very interesting thing I’ve noticed about myself. I’m going to be using the contest as a way to give myself new ideas and inspire myself to write more, so that should be fun.

I can already tell that in this one semester alone I’m probably going to learn more about horses and cows than during all the previous years of my life combined! They’re kind of intimidating though, so I’m still planning on focusing on cats and maybe dogs.
This leaves me with less time for art and photography, but I still have some ideas for projects that will hopefully be very interesting.

On another note…

I found this really strange book today. It’s a horror novel based on Cherokee mythology, Brass, by Robert J. Conley. Looks like it could be one of the most unusual horror stories I’ve ever read, but since horror is my favorite genre I thought I would give it a try. I have read some Cherokee mythology as well as myths from other tribes already, and they are some of my favorite types of stories. The Native Americans have some of the most bizarre and terrifying monster myths I’ve ever read, often involving giant parts of human bodies running around eating people, as well as the more typical giants and reptilian beasts. My favorite is the giant head with bat wings sprouting out of its cheeks that swoops down to gobble people up.
This book is about a shapeshifting trickster though. I have no idea when I’ll start reading it, but I am looking forward to it.

It’s a Nikon Coolpix P80 ([link]). I’m still just a hobby photographer, but I think this will open up some very fun opportunities for me. So far I only have cats and a few things around the house as practice subjects, but as soon as I can I’ll be going to the zoo and a few other places to try it out. I especially want to see how the jaguars are doing.

Since the quality of my pictures will probably be improving, I’ll be going through my gallery to move some of my lower quality stuff to scraps. No deletions though since I love everything too much.

Looks like the mood icon bug is half fixed. Weirdness.

I’ve been active in the online world since 2003, when I joined the community at Cryptozoology.com (still active there under the name of Panthera. Wonderful people there, very interesting interactions and debates constantly going on). Between my parents and myself we decided I wouldn’t reveal much about myself over the ‘net, but now that I’m turning 20 (!) on the 10th, they said I could go for it.
I was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and have lived here all my life. It’s a wonderful town, I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. I love it- weird weather, tornados, and all. We have a wonderful zoo, which has given me many great photography opportunities over the years.
I’m currently studying to become a Veterinary Technician. With luck I’ll be able to specialize in working with cats, since they’re the species I’ve spent the most time with and understand best.
My mental state could be described as interesting, to say the least. I was born with OCD and Asperger’s syndrome. It hasn’t gotten in the way of things much, but it has made life kind of unusual in some ways. Probably the worst of it is that I never learned how to drive a car. I don’t mix well with big machines or overly complicated technological stuff.
I think a lot of my artistic qualities come from the Asperger’s. It also gave me an obsession with animals, which is probably why I never learned how to draw people outside of the occasional art class. Oh well, I’m trying to teach myself how to draw them now. Don’t ask about how I’m coming along with backgrounds and landscapes.
I’ll be uploading pictures of myself now and then when I can find or make good ones. I’m still not using my real name here, though. Sorry, creepy Internet stalkers.

Now, werewolf movies are a lot of fun. My favorite is probably Dog Soldiers. I love the look of the werewolves and the idea behind that one. Nonetheless, I don’t think it’s a good idea to limit yourself to only one source of inspiration. I started studying the mythology of werewolves several years ago and it remains a subject of fascination to this day.
For starters there are some great websites out there that can give you information about some of the different versions of werewolves from various cultures. If you want more detailed information, though, I would recommend you read Jamie Hall’s book Half Human, Half Animal. It goes into a detailed discussion of the various kinds of traditional werewolves, as well as stories of transformations into other species. I found the chapters on encantados (weredolphins), werecats and werehyenas particularly interesting. The bibliography of other books about shapeshifters is gigantic, so it’s also a good reference if you’re looking for fiction.
There are dozens of varieties of werewolves from Russia to Central America, but few involve full moons, silver, or bipedalism. Most resemble a normal wolf, or a wolf with a few unusual features. Transformations are often voluntary, or tied to a particular day of the year. You can thank The Wolf Man for introducing many of the additional characteristics that have become so popular today.
As well as getting artistic inspiration, studying mythology and folklore is a great way to learn about other cultures. One of my favorite things about these stories is how they show me the wide variety of worldviews held by other cultures. Werecreatures can be good or evil, feared or admired, or anything in between.
While I am not saying that it’s wrong for people to base their versions of werewolves on Lon Chaney Jr.’s appearances in the Wolf Man movies (I always thought he kind of looked more like a gorilla than a canine, as fun as the movies are ), I think it would be a good idea for people to try to learn more about the origins of werewolves. You might just like what you find.
