Ed Benedict died on Monday, August 28th. It really is a sad loss. He was a layout designer and character designer for the well-known Hanna-Barbera cartoons, MGM cartoons, TV commercials and other good things. I've always enjoyed his style of drawing and designing. I never knew too much about him, but his drawings really influenced me and they still do. I feel sorta sad about this 'cause when I was a kid I'd always draw the Flintstones, Yogi Bear, and other H-B characters alot and loved doing them. I've never wondered who created this style of design until I found out about him on Toonheads many many years ago. I really liked drawing in this style and I sometimes sneak in his designs in my own drawing sometimes. Check out John K.'s blog ( [link] )and read more into it.

Also check here for more info--->[link]

Check out these links as well. They have some interesting drawings that Benedict's done during the golden age of animation!

Hey, check these out! Some great cartoons I found in cartoonbrew and on some other links!

This first one's called "Tales of Worm Paranoia" and was directed by Eddie Fitzgerald with some animated scenes by Bob Jaques!! It's amazing!

[link]

And here's another good one titled "Buy One, Get One Free" directed by Don Yank, Charlie Bean, and Carey Yost! with artwork from Lynne Naylor, Jim Smith, Chris Reccardi, Scott Wills, Mike Fontanelli, Bob Jaques, Rob Renzetti and among others!!

[link]

Now these here are classic gems! These are what I call cartoons!! They give me tingles up and down my spine every time I watch 'em!

Betty Boop/Bimbo-"Mysterious Mose"

[link]

Betty Boop-"Minnie The Moocher"

[link]

There's another Betty Boop called "The Old Man of the Mountain" in Youtube and unfortunately Devart isn't letting me give you this link 'cause there's a little smiley emoticon that appers in the middle of the link thing, which has an equal sign and an upper case "D". bleh! Basically it looks like this:

[link]j9k-CKclMw&search=betty%20boop%20classic%20cartoons

well it's been a while since i've said anything here. just got back from school for some turkey and holiday fun with the fam of course. I'm also doing some "storyboard" stuff for my own personal animated short i wanna do, which'll be 3-5 minutes long. nothing special, but since i've rarely touched my profile page I might as well put some drawings up to view my process for my animation. maybe i'll put up a blog for that, but for now i'll leave some stuff here.

well yep! now that i've learned a couple of more things about animation in school among w/ all the programs I've learned for animation I've thought of doing my first mini film for myself and waiting until my senior year to make one won't encourage me to animate now! but yeah for this thing I'll be doing some research a whole lot of heavy research and working on different things like making sure everything flows well so that it wouldn't be this humongous mess of crap! well actually ahhh why not this'll be my blog why waste it on another blog site. so yes i'll be putting my shizznizz here. and what's the purpose for doing this? well nothing really i just wanna post more new drawings and stuff cause it's been a while. i do miss posting my thingies!

on a side note! did you know that John K.'s doing a music video for Weird Al? it's too cool! i got this news a while back but i figured it'd be cool to tell those who don't know.

also the new set for looney tunes (i know old news) but i still can't get over the Gruesome Twosome cartoon and another one called Rumors which is a Snafu cartoon in the set. very cool stuff very inspiring. now i know how John K. feels about Clampett. when i saw the gruesome twosome cartoon i felt very inspired. I know i've seen it once during my childhood but seeing it again made me realize more about animation and cartooning and since i was inspired by this cartoon i also felt some envy cause the cartoon was so good and for some reason i felt like i couldn't be as good as clampett, but really i can be, which is something new i've learned.

crazy crazy stuff!!

Hey there, well I'm here in school doing my usual school routine and it's great 'cause it's here in school where I get to do more of my experimental drawings and apply and learn different cartoon techniques. I did some of that during the summer, but I mostly did some paintings so really it's here where i usually do my learning.

Anyways, well I have some unfortunate news. All the scanners down in the lab don't work and won't work for the entire year, i hope they meant what's left of the year and not my entire sophomore year. Sadness strikes down upon thee. So yeah you won't be seeing some drawings for a while and that sucks 'cause I've done a bunch since I got to school. I do think I have a chance to scan 'em in a different building, but we'll see what goes.

Also I came upon a site called Carnival Cartoons, and some of the stuff in their site are pretty fun to watch especially this one short called "Bend Over and Take it" and among other stuff. Here's the link [link] the drawings and concepts are really cool, but what I don't find too impressive about this place is that some stuff in here reminds me a little bit of Spumco, which doesn't make it seem too innovative in my sense.

Annother site I came across was Katie Rice's blog called Funny Cute. If you're not familiar w/ her stuff, she's done layouts for the new Spumco R&SAPC, she does awesome cartoony girl drawings, and I think she now works as a character designer for The Buzz on Maggie. In there she shows different drawing techniques and styles she applies to her girl drawings and talks about her experiences through caricaturing, where she talked to John K. about certain techniques that can be helpful for a funny caricature and you'll get to see some funny celebrity caricatures from John, which are fun to look at. here's the link [link]

And last but not least, another blog I found from a worker from Spumco named Fred Osmond, who I think also works w/ Katie on The Buzz on Maggie show and has his own caricature and cartoons blog called Cartoons and Caricatures [link] his stuff is really awesome and i think he's an amazing cartoonist.

It's something I've planned for the summer to see if i can hopefully sell them through ebay and make some dough, but i'm having second thoughts to see if i wanna sell em or not. I mean I'm really not that desperate to make some money. I only want it for trips to places and valuable stuff, but i dunno i'll see what happens.

yeah I've been doing more school work and more drawings lately, but lately I've been having some pretty interesting talks w/ my roommate about spirituality and how it relates w/ composition in art. My roommate knows quite alot about spirituality. He's been doing lots of meditation and lots of Tai Chi and reads into this kinda stuff alot too and he's an awesome friend and roommate! well yeah we talk about the fake stuff in art and the real stuff that comes deep down inside a person's spirit and how it's expressed onto the flat surface or page or wherever, but with control. I describe it as being outrageous. The talks I've had w/ him made my thinking about art and everything in general so clear! Spirituality is the key! but i don't wanna go into detail w/ all of this. I think it's best for everyone to figure this stuff out on their own. I just thought i'd give in some few hints and stuff. you know just to make you think. heh I don't mean to be mean or anything I just think that's how it should go.
Peace!

well I pretty much had a relaxing weekend here in my room. I goofed off w/ my roommate a little bit and when he's out doing T'ai Chi I spend my lonesome time here w/ Mr. Computer.

I did a little cartoon portrature of myself yesterday (or was it Saturday) of me being a retard, which is kinda funny lookin' but also scary at the same time (I'll put it up once I'm done here).

I pretty much want to recap what I've been going through inside that cartoonretro place i mentioned before. Well for starters I've been reading about this one animator that worked both in Disney and the Walter Lantz studio. his name is Fred Moore and boy can he draw some good looking women and from what I've read he's done some great animation as well, but this isn't the first time I've heard about him I remembered the name before and when i saw his girl drawings I instantly knew who he was. He's done some great woody woodpecker drawings too. so yeah you should check him out. also I've seen stuff from Mary Blair, who's excellent w/ her painting skills. I also checked out her concept designs for the disney ride "It's a Small World" and they just blew me away. makes me want to paint more actually. I you're familiar w/ the paintings of Joan Miro that's what her stuff kinda reminds me of. Also I found out about another cartoon called Scrub Me Momma w/ a Boogie Beat which might look a little offensive for African-Americans, but I just think the girl drawings are fantastic looking. CANTINFLAS!!! Oh man do i remember this guy! I'd watch him all the time when i was a kid, though i never saw the cartoons. Yeah so this cartoon of cantinflas was just beautiful. Great characters and great backgrounds, especially zee women RWAR! RWAR! heh yeah i was real happy to see that. and I've also been looking at some freeze frames of the Bob Clampett cartoons both off the net and off my Looney Tunes collections and they're super strange. If you ever have the chance to look at your Looney Tunes vol 2 collection w/ the clampett shorts, freeze frame them, it's a great watch (not the whole cartoons just the parts where the characters get zany or do something real fast). I've also seen stuf from illustrators like Ryohei Yanagihara, J.D. Leyendecker, Doug Sneyd, Jack Cole (whom I'm looking at right now) and Harvey Kurtzman who's a great cartoonists if you ask me! so if anyone's interested to check more of this stuff just go to cartoonretro.com, it's worth it!

Yeah I figured why not make some entries every day about my daily basis in life! since i'm not doing too much right now these days.

I just got off the phone w/ my family and they seem like they're doing okay. My mom told me that the power went out in pretty much a few parts around where the house is including the house itself. my sister's pissed off about the whole power thing because she wanted to do a couple of things in her computer and then watch the wedding special of Strange Love. my dad seems okay. he was listening to the radio while talking to me so yeah he seems good enough. I'm very happy that they're all doing just fine!

as for me i barely did shit today except be on the internet. go and buy some materials for a project i have to do, which is friggin' due tomorrow morning and then come back to the room to do some relaxin' and maybe watch a little tv for the hell of it! I have to do a 3-D design project for tomorrow which sucks 'cause i'm a 2-D kinda guy but whatever at least i'm learning a few things.

Um oh yeah my roommate just told me he might download the movie Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (which is my favorite movie for the time being) so that me and him can watch it tonight so we'll see how that goes as for the project that's due tomorrow, I'll probably wake up tomorrow early in the morning to work on that, but it's already halfway done so really I just need to add a couple of other things in there so whatever.

another thing I wanna add is that I was going to the site cartoonretro.com and on it there's a thread discussion about cartoon acting/expressions/poses etc. that got me really interested. It talked about different views and good points on the subject. There was a particular discussion on how John K. (creator of Ren and Stimpy) mentioned that the Disney style of acting was way too fake and generic in a cartoon which I believe it myself and that has nothing to do w/ me not liking Disney. Anyways the people in the thread tested some stuff out w/ a couple of frame stills from the movie Pinochio and still frames from the new Ren and Stimpy: Adult Party Cartoon show episode called Ren Seeks Help and they compared the two. The still frames from Pinochio are where Pinochio and his friend Lampwick turn into donkeys and get all scared and the still frames from Ren Seeks help is where Ren pistol whips Mr. Horse in the face out of crazed anger. and when they compared the two they found out that they were both really expressive but the Ren one was a lot more expressive because of how the characters were acting and how each tiny little expression and movement was drawn out in ren and Mr. Horse, more w/ ren though. On the other hand w/ Pinochio, they found out that Pinochio's face was always the same expression in each frame it wasn't like how a person's face would react. it didn't feel real, you know? I know it's just a cartoon but if the audience would want to feel the expression more in what the character was feeling at that moment then it'd be more expressive and specific looking in the drawings. When I saw the scene w/ Mr. Horse and Ren I completely felt it. when i saw ren's expressions and movements when he wasn't sure if he should do this or he shouldn't do that he went w/ what he thought he should do anyway and when he did it he felt very uncontrolled like he didn't think to stop himself but he couldn't because he just had to go for it and for some reason i really REALLY felt that. Maybe i saw it in a different way but I just felt the continuance of rage of what Ren was feeling when he was slammin down on Mr. Horse(note that on the website the still frames of Ren going mad are for some reason could not be seen, I'm just taking this information off my head and also I've seen that episode a hundred times and i particularly remember that scene because it's one of my favorites but i could be wrong in some parts). Anywho that's all i have to say.

PEACE!
God and I'll be going to sleep early too, damn! i like to stay up at night being the little freaky insomniac that I am!! anywhoo while i've been awake i've been exploring this one cool website called Cartoonretro.com which is outta sight!! if you're interested to see different drawings from early cartoonists, illustrators, and animators it's the place to go and the forum is pretty cool too. I've been seeing different magazine art illustrations and some of it is great and amusing to watch. i'm pretty much glued to the site basically! well i'm preparing myself for today to do a bunch of stuff that I have to do for school and I'll also be posting some drawings I've been doing lately! so expect those to be here soon!

From the looks of this place I think I'll feel all homey inside! Um hmm yeah! well hi my name is Pedro Vargas some friends of mine call me Petey and some just call me by my birth name. I live in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, but I'm currently living in Savannah, Georgia catching up w/ all of my artwork for the school i go too called Savannah of College of Art and Design, which really isn't the place for me, but hey I've gotta learn somewhere like any good little boy. I consider myself an artist mostly a cartoon man and I doodle as much as I can until my right hand dies a natural dignified death! I'm right now coming up w/ new drawings and I still have to finish the Robert Crumb book my roommate gave me for my birthday, which is a good read so far. I'm mostly watching too much TV lately which is driving me insane because TV sucks now and it isn't making me any healthier in my head and I should really catch up w/ the reading I wanna do. Grrr!! But whatever I'll get to that at some point in me life. But truthfully I'm actually happy to have found this place and see many people share there art as I'll do w/ mine! so yeah that's pretty cool! um right now I'm trying to come up w/ something to end this entry, but nothing's flying in my brain! but yeah cool looking place. Hopefully I'll meet people and share my art soon!!

Yours Truly,
