Just discovered that with my new student discount I can get Photoshop CS4 Extended for Â£800 pounds less!!!

Now I just need to earn the money to buy it..

And I know, I could just download it, but I wanna buy all my products... Does mean that I won't post any shots until I get it in a few months time, but I'll still hopefully go out shooting.. Not too sure if I like Aperture, or if I'm just not used to it.. Does anyone know if there is an option to reduce colour noise?

My apologies for not being around for the last few months... Computer troubles as usual! But I hope to be around again for November time..

Really need some advice on Apple Aperture 2.. Buying a beautiful new Mac n I think I'm gonna get Aperture but I wanna know what the differences are between Lightroom (which I currently use) and Aperture.

Any comments about pros n cons will be v helpful!

Oh, and I bought a Canon 70-200 F4L IS... BEAUTIFUL lens!

So sorry for going away for so long! I just can't summon the will to wait 15 mins for my computer to turn on and then be SO slow! But... I'm gonna get an imac! WWWOOOOOOO!!!!

Gotta wait until September though, and then a beautiful 24 inch Mac shall be mine!

Oh, and I changed my mind about the lens again... It'll be the 70-200 f4L IS. My poor back can't take the f2.8 version!

I'm in the process of wanting to get a new lens...

And I've narrowed it down to:

Canon 70-200 f2.8L
Canon 70-200 f4L

Both will be non IS, and I'm having a hard time choosing! The thing is I love my bokeh, and I just don't know what the difference that stop will make is...

Oh, and I don't want a prime.

Any suggestions?

So, I've not really been here for 3 months... I don't know what happened, but for some strange reason, I've not been here...

But, I really miss this place. I haven't been shooting much, but I really wanna get back into it. I had to clear my message centre (again) so I'm sorry if I don't see your work...

But...

I'm gonna be in full swing soon, so hopefully all will resume to how it was before. I'm off to Barcelona next week, n I'm still trying to find ways to sneak my tripod along...

I also ordered a 20 x 30 inch print of my Natural History Museum shot, it looks great when you can pick out all the detail. I'm still annoyed that I didn't buy more gear when the pound was strong... Everythings massively more expensive now, so I'm not a happy man...

Before we start... Whats OSF - P17? That's One Shot Feature - Part 17... Another talented young man, only 17!

Well, there's only one tip for my acclaimed Make Your Photos Look Much Better (other than read my tutorials) and that is:

Sharpening For The Web:

Yup, I rarely fav a photo if its not sharp...

Firstly, the pros:

Much smaller file (uploads quicker)

Every style of photo benefits from proper sharpening

It only takes 20 seconds in photoshop

It makes your photos harder (but not impossible) to steal

It makes your images look more professional

Do you need any more?

The Method:

This is a simplified version but it does work exceptionally well no matter what level of photography expertise you have.

1. Take your image (fully processed) and then reduce the image size to 1500px on the longest side. (I don't have PS but it's an easy option to find, somewhere near Canvas Size). Make sure you keep the image proportions locked, and on the bicubic method if you have the option.

2. Sharpen the image with the one click sharpen function. NOT Unsharp mask or any other method.

3. Sharpen it again with the same button.

4. If your image is oversharp, you can stop now. If not sharpen again and it should now be oversharp.

5. Go back to image size and reduce it again. The longest side (for landscape shots) should be 800-900px. For square or portrait shots, 600px is about right.

6. Sit back and admire...

7. Sometimes you lose contrast and saturation after doing it so make sure you set that right again!

NOTE: You may have noticed you can't zoom in anymore... But at 100%, your image will now look awesome.

Obviously, this is for web presentation, and not for prints!

More complex versions use an exact size reduction calculation and layer masks for localised sharpening... Play around and see what you get!

It really does make a huge difference and is not as complex as it seems.

Sorry for the long delay between journals... I got a DD on the 25th! (and it sent my message centre crazy).

I was very surprised by it (especially as it hasn't been 3 months), and by all the feedback it got... Over 1200 favs!!! Thank you to everyone who faved it, sorry I can't reply in person. But I have managed to reply to every comment! I'm always suprised when I get a DD. To think that I'm an amateur photographer, and this is the world's biggest art website. Its crazy!

I've got my flashgun with me now, and it is just so much better than the built in one... Got my eyes on the next lot of gear... Hehe, there's no stopping me buying stuff!!

Although, I'm not sure about the 5D mkII... I'm not exactly a pro, n Â£2,000 is a fair amount... But we'll see, my 40D is serving me well.

Oh, and a very important bit of news... I just realised my 17-40L doesn't have a name!!! Thats just wrong! So, its time to get some name suggestions for her...

Well, I bought a flashgun.... Its been delivered to my home, so I won't pick it up for another couple of weeks, but at least its arrived! I guess I was just trying to increase the usefulness of my 40D some more... Its been great since I got the 17-40L, cos its a very useful range on a crop body... (And it'll be great on my FF too!)

Other than that, I've found some more amazing artists here... (I'll feature them soon) I'm loving portraiture at the moment, I love studio lighting...

Also getting kinda frustrated... I really wanna be out shooting at the moment, but its just too dark after I finish work and weekends are busy at the mo. Gonna shoot some street ASAP...

Also, I'm going to pur-chase myself a Canon 100mm Macro, once I get a couple of months pay in my account... I went to Jessops to test it, and its BEAUTIFUL!

Just felt like getting a feature back on my page... I'm missing shooting at the moment, I left my camera at home and won't get back till this weekend to fetch it.

On the plus, I've bought a new Loweprowe backpack. My little one before couldn't manage all my gear, so hopefully this one will. I can't remember which one it is, maybe the fastpack 300? But it should be good anyway!

I've still got 1233 deviations to get through, but I'm working on it. And I might finish those tutorials I started off, if people are still interested. Hope you're all well...

I'm moving tomorrow, so if I don't have internet access (I'll be living in hospital accommodation) then I pretty much won't be around for about a year... I'll still log on at weekends and stuff but there's no way I'll be able to keep up with journals, deviations and what not.

I've had a great time here, and learnt loads whilst I was at it, so thank you everyone for your feedback. I'll still keep shooting as much as I can, my 17-40 L arrived yesterday, and it's beautiful! It still feels strange being able to zoom (I never had a kit lens).

Well, goodbye...

Oh, and if I do have internet access, I'll be around everyday for about 5 hours a day!

Soz its been so long since I've been around. I've been doing some last minute decorating before I leave home, so I've not been on here much... Times are kinda busy at the mo, but I'll be around as much as I can. Well, I've got some more news for you. Firstly, a DD!

I got it on one of my London street shots and it was a great to get all that feedback on it. I'm so happy!

Thank you to everyone who faved it.

And secondly, I did my first work in photography last week, taking shots for website use, and now I've got a Canon 17-40 F4L ordered and on its way! Haha! This is probably gonna be my walk around lens from now on... It's gonna be great having a zoom lens that goes longer than 20mm!

And I think that's all the news from me, I'm very behind on comments, deviations and journals but I will get to them.

I decided to take the job in Bath, so I'm moving on October 12th. I dunno if I'll have internet access when I'm there so my dA time may be restricted... Or if I do, then I'll be around lots! Other news, the Canon EOS 5D mk II. Looks beautiful... I really, really want one! I quite literally have less than no money though (overdrawn, student debts and minimal life savings...)

I've only ever had one job and I blew my earnings on a hammock and a holiday to Portugal with my mates! (well worth it!)

So, my dream camera is a long way off...

However, if you are forunate enough to have a few grand lying around, you may wish to visit [link] . They are listing it (with the 24-105) for Â£550 cheaper than anywhere else (in the UK). Its still not as cheap as the USA, but its not as ridiculous as the Â£3000 everyone else wants...

So for the feature...

This is going to be (in my opinion) THE best feature I will ever do. It is of a website, of who I regard to be the best landscape photographer in the world. Many of you may already know of it, but if you don't, prepare for hours of looking at amazing photos...

Well, I still haven't got a job, but I've got 2 interviews this week so hopefully all goes well...

I love the way that if you turn up your monitors brightness to reveal the details, you can see that they've put a patch over the bottom of the pic so that you can't see the name of the model!

I may have featured this artist before... I can't remember, but he's got some stunning shots in his gallery and here's his latest...

I've managed to get hold of a computer! It's soooo slow, but it might just do. So I should have my first deviation with you in a couple of days.... Still gotta calibrate the screen n what not.

Anyway, the feature today is for an extremely talented artist... His work constantly amazes me and is truly amazing!

Do you think my feature pics are too wide? I like them big, but if your screens not big then you might not be seeing the whole thing.... There should be the blue of my CSS on either side...

Well, I'm back from Cornwall! The weather was abysmal, but I did my best with the photo opportunities I had. I quite like most of them, they're the best I've ever taken, and I reckon that there's probably 40 that'll make it here. I still can't process them, so it's gonna take a while.

I dropped my lens cap in the sea, which kinda annoyed me, as I didn't have a hope of finding it. That was a bit of a crap day for me, I dropped my b & w 110 in the sea aswell (I found that again though - and no scrathes either) and I got hit by a massive wave. I protected my gear, but got drenched.

I'll process the stuff as soon as I can, but removing all those lovely colour casts is gonna take a while!

But anyway, enough ranting, I'm gonna go through my message center now and see whats been happening here.

I've been reading alot about colour calibration and viewing pics on the web around here on dA, so I thought I'd have a go and see how much difference it made to what I saw. Now, as my laptops broken I've done it on the family computer. And believe me, it makes a HUGE difference! I could tell when I saw my page here on dA that things didn't look right... The shots were over contrasty and the colours were off. So if you wanna see what it could do for you, I thought I'd post a few links.

[link] is a website about monitor calibration. It also has a link to a FREE program (and it's legit) called Quickgamma. This program has all the info you need, and I've found it works really well.

You need the latest version of firefox, and this add-on. [link] Then, your all set.

The difference is great! I'm off on Saturday, so hopefully I'll catch up with all your stuff before I go... I'm gonna leave this journal up for a while, and won't update it till I get back, so I've chosen a very special feature. This is a very well known shot, and one of my all time favourites:

Just another quick one... Been buying silly stuff on the internet again... I just ordered a 4GB CF card and the Hoya R72... Can't really afford it but I guess thats what a credit card is for eh?

I think, basically I wanna have everything ready for Cornwall and don't wanna walk around and think, well that would've made a good IR, but I can't do it... Hopefully it'll arrive in time, as they didn't have it in stock...

Hey guys!

I've unfortunately got to the stage where I can't thank every person for the favs they've given me...

I do appreciate every fav and I thank you now, but with the anti-spamming message, and other things it's impossible for me to do it.

I will however answer every single comment, and I read all your journals... I may not respond to them, but that's only cos I spilt water over my keyboard n some letters don't work, so I have to plug another keyboard in, and that's a lot of effort!

Right... A quick journal, a more detailed one to follow.

Firstly, the tag:

Well...

I'm kind of in shock. I was in town today with my parents sorting out my passport renewal, and they took me to Jessops and bought me an EOS 40D.

...

Which was unexpected.

I've now charged it up and it's ready to go. Only, I lent my 10-20mm to my uncle cos I didn't have a camera (and wasn't expecting one). So now I don't have my favourite lens, and I have an amazing camera...

Haha! I guess I'm starting to see the funny side now.
Well... I'm off to London next week to work in a hospital for four weeks, so my time on dA will be restricted but I will catch up on everyones stuff.

Helllooo there!!!

You may well have noticed that recently my photos have contained no colour....

This was mostly due to the fact Lightroom and CS2 were being silly and the colour profiles were messed up.

Everything I tried in colour came out undersaturated and low on contrast... Well it took me 3 hours yesterday and an hour this morning but it's all sorted...

Now, for an improptu injection of colour into my gallery! Hope you like it!
