Good afternoon, friends! There are only two more days left to get your votes in for this month's DeviantAwards! Please take a few moments to vote for your favorite artist in each category. Read below for more information.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I received a lovely note the other day from *TheDeviantAwards. saying that I've been nominated for a "Best Poet" award; I'm not sure which of my readers nominated me, but I thank you greatly from the very inner-reaches of my heart (and all the back out again). It truly means a lot to me! My poetry is a reflection of my past, present, and future, and it contains many traces of my soul that I've shared with people, that I haven't been able to share with people, and also that I wish to share with people in time. Every one of my poems is cherished just like the rest, and I am happy to have such a lovely community to share my words with.

Voting for the awards starts today, and if you'd like to take part, feel free to head over to *TheDeviantAwards so to view the nominees for all the awards (there's more than just poetry), and then send a note to *TheDeviantAwards - telling them who you'd like to vote for in regards to the category of your choosing. Fun stuff!

I am amongst an array of very talented writers, including some of which I've looked up to over the past couple years or so, so it's a very exciting experience for me. I would certainly appreciate the support, so if you'd like to vote for me, I would love you all the more for it! Please take a look at the other writers' works too though, since I believe we all deserve a fair chance, especially since all of our writing is worthy of merit; such emotion and devotion in this world is not easy to find, so please take your time to read, feel, and live through our works' worlds, and then vote for who you think deserves to win the award.

In other news, I've been continuing with the creation of my audio versions for my poems; these are recordings of my poetry for those who are visually impaired, and/or for those of you who enjoy hearing my words instead of simply reading them. I don't have audio versions for all of my newest writings, but they are in development and will be added to my gallery soon; keep checking back to my latest journal entries for a list of the most recent audio versions.

With that, my friends, I bid you adieu.

Keep on keepin' on,
Daniel

Recent audio versions:

Updated on 08/19/09

Rewind
Honest Poetry
A Cordial Encounter
Faith
Light
Tahlia
She Dances
Dream Thief
One Hundred Five Degrees
As the Sun Goes Down
<a href="http://www.devianta...

I'm very close to hitting 6000 pageviews! Typically I don't pay too much attention to such a thing, but I do think of such a high number as a sign of progress, and I think it shows that over the years my writing has been attracting more and more interested readers, and I like that idea. I'd be happy with just myself reading my poetry, but it makes me feel extra-special to have other individuals read my life's words; and having the ability to touch people's emotions with my writing means a lot to me.

So, here's the thing... If someone can capture my 6000th pageview (screen captures work best!), I'll send them a surprise! The easiest way to do this is to load up my profile page and hit CTRL+PrtSc (control key plus print screen) on your keyboard, and then hit CTRL+V (control plus V, which is just an easy way of "pasting") in any image editing program (such as Paint) or even just about any word processing program; and then you can upload the image to an online photo album such as Photobucket, Imageshack, or what have you; and finally, send me a comment or note with the link. It may sound like a lot of work, but it's easy stuff - believe me! I'll make it worth your while.

I've been continuing with the creation of my audio versions for my poems; these are recordings of my poetry for those who are visually impaired, and/or for those of you who enjoy hearing my words instead of simply reading them.
I realize I haven't been submitting as many deviations as last year, but fear not - I am still quite the avid poet, and it's just that my time has been focused towards strengthening my artistic abilities, and putting more effort into creating quality pieces (as opposed to a greater quantity). I promise you, my readers, that spectacular things are in store for my gallery, and you will clearly see that a poet's heart never truly dies - it just quiets itself from time to time, and then the passion flare ignites once more from beyond the stars, and words fall back to Earth like romantic rain.

Also, I've been continuing with the creation of my audio versions for my poems; these are recordings of my poetry for those who are visually impaired, and/or for those of you who enjoy hearing my words instead of simply reading them. I don't have audio versions for all of my newest writings, but they are in development and will be added to my gallery soon; keep checking back to my latest journal entries for a list of the most recent audio versions.

With that, my friends, I bid you adieu.

Keep on keepin' on,
Daniel

Recent audio versions:

Updated on 08/19/09

Rewind
Honest Poetry
A Cordial Encounter
Faith
Light
Tahlia
She Dances
Dream Thief
One Hundred Five Degrees
As the Sun Goes Down
Summer Eyes
Fog of Yesterday
Any Other Girl
Side By Side
First Star's Light
Broken
Waves of Fortune
A Reason

Good evening everyone!

I have just recently added audio version links to my three newest poems, so if you want to check them out, you can do so by going to my gallery and clicking on the link in the author's comments; or you can click one of the following links:

Summer Eyes
Fog of Yesterday
Any Other Girl

Also, much appreciation is being sent towards for pointing out a mistake I made in my audio version for "Side By Side". I corrected the mistake of saying "left" instead of "lost", but instead if adding that corrected version, I decided to link a brand new recording instead. I feel like this recording is closer to how the poem should sound (in my opinion, at least). The link has been updated in the author's comments for "Side By Side", and you can also find it below:

Side By Side

Update:

I've been busy working on even more audio versions for some of my older poems, and I have added audio version links to the author's comments in each of the following poems:

First Star's Light
Broken
Waves of Fortune

I hope you all enjoy these new recordings!
Good evening fellow friends and art addicts,

Earlier this evening I came to the sound conclusion that I should finally get around to recording those song demos I promised long ago; sooo I did it, and they actually turned out alright! The quality isn't spectacular since I recorded these with my laptop (temporary solution), but they give you a good idea of the direction I want to take these songs.

So without any further ado, here are some brand new demos that I wrote (both the music and lyrics) plus one older demo ("Sunset Oceans"):

Open Your Dreams

Courtesy

Every Single Strand

Sunset Oceans

You can find the lyrics to the four of these songs in my "Sing-Songiness" collection located in my gallery.

I hope you all enjoy them. Despite having a cold, I think my vocals came out pretty decently and they effectively add to the intensity of the songs. These songs are mine is all respects, so I do count on everyone to not steal them in way, shape, or form; and if you do, I will know because I have friends in high places (reallllly high places, if you catch my drift *penetrating stare*). Aha, I only say that because it isn't easy to write a song that you can feel comfortable with to want to share it with everyone, and stealing my art would make me sad; and I mean, you don't want me to be sad, do you?

Comments would be lovely, as always!

Daniel

Sorry for the massive delay in comments, deviations, posting, etc. I've been on a journey of sorts, tieing up loose ends, entangling myself further into this world, and all that fun stuff.

Anyways, I just wanted to let everyone know that I'm not purposely ignoring them, and that I will indeed be back, although...

...I'm taking a break from standard poetry writing for a little while. I'm not sure for how long; it could last a day, maybe a month... That's not to say I'm not writing anymore; as long as I draw breath I will always write poetry, but I want to switch things up a bit so I can muster some inspiration. My single poems seem to be stagnating in creativity here and there, so I want to try some more "original" ideas (e.g. working on my play, visual poetry, song lyrics, sonnets, and some other ideas that are cooking in my head).

And with that, I take my leave.

See you in a few,
Daniel

PS -

Pieces of the heart that have struck me out of the blue...

Even though my user page may say otherwise (since I don't have all of my poetry submitted to deviantART), I have finally hit the 300 mark.

Yes indeedy; since sometime in 2004, I have written 300 poems.

I believe I've come a long way since my poetic beginning. When I first started writing, I used to come up with lines like, "love is like a loving river of loving love", etc, etc. (Note: I never actually used that line, but hopefully you get the point). And now I have pieces like "A Letter From A Gentleman", "The Ultimate", "Waves of Fortune", "Voyage", and others, that truly showcase my emotion and life's journey in a light not quite seen by many writers. Now, that's not to say that I think my writing is the end-all when it comes to poetry, and that I think I'm the greatest poet in the world; I'm certainly not that conceited. I just know for sure that quite a few writers don't dig deep enough into themselves when they prepare to write, and thus come up with cheesy, unoriginal, and uninspiring lines; which leaves the reader guessing where the author is really coming from.

Once again, I'm not perfect. I know this. Hell, I embrace this. The world is, after all, an imperfect place. But you see, when I first started writing poetry, I was like quite a few writers that I see here on deviantART: just writing whatever came to my head and made me feel better. There's nothing wrong with this, though! Don't get me wrong; it's just that I craved something more... I was trying to find myself in this crazy world (still am), and the lines I was coming up with just weren't expressing what I truly felt. This is why I still write to this day; I haven't wrote that poem: the poem that reflects everything that I truly want to say to the world. Maybe I'll never write this poem; and I hope I don't write it for a long, long time, 'cause that will surely be the last poem I ever write. I mean, what would there be left to say afterwards?

Anyways, I have gone through significant stages with my writing. Back in the day, a friend of mine once told me that my poetry lacked a real message; a real emotional ticket for the world to pick up on. And no matter how hard I tried to discard those comments, I just couldn't get them out of my head. Why? Because he was right. Yes, my simple poetry made me feel better after I wrote it, but I was still yearning for something more. Then, months later, I found what I was looking for when I wrote "Waves of Fortune". To me, this was my first "real" poem, in which I truly used my emotional reserves to fixate myself into a piece that reflected what I would want to read from another writer (although I'm glad I was the one who came up with it. Haha.). Even if it was only a crush, I wrote that poem for a girl whom I had very strong feelings for, and I somehow found a way to absorb all those feelings and point them in a direction that I felt fully comfortable with.

After that moment, my writing had always contained a concentration that was previously lacking. Once I wrote "Sensual circumstances", I was able to filter the inspiration from other media and use it in my writing, which I still do to this day. This piece was also the beginning to my "forceful romantic" and "dark" stages, in which I commonly used darker themes to help illustrate my angsty and longing stages of life; I've grown from those times, but yet still find myself going back every now and then (like in my last piece).

After I wrote "The Ultimate", I found myself writing with an eloquence that my earlier writing lacked, and this is certainly my favorite style of writing; I love, most of all, writing the most beautiful lines that I can possibly think of, and that I feel other people would be smitten when it comes to reading them. After all, to me, reality is indeed beautiful, and I live for the beauty that life has to offer me.

I doubt anyone is still reading this, but if you are, I thank you for reading about my poetic adventures, and I hope you continue to read my writing, all the way through my next set of styles as I try to find myself even better and more completely.

My aim for 2008 is to write at least 100 poems. I've written 7 in about a month and a half, so I don't see 100 being much of a problem, but I suppose we'll see!

Until the time we meet in dreams,
Daniel

And there's 10 million more who probably could

Taken from the lyrics of "Blaise Bailey Finnegan III" by Godspeed You! Black Emperor:
---------------------------------------------------------------

Interviewer: Do you think things are gonna get better before they get worse?

Blaise Bailey Finnegan III: No way. Things are just gonna get worse and keep on getting worse. Like I said, America's a third world country as it is and... and we're just basically in a hopeless situation as it stands.

Interviewer: What do you think this country's gonna look like in the year 2003?

Blaise Bailey Finnegan III: Y'know, I'll tell you the truth - nothing against you guys, but I don't wanna answer that question because... I haven't even got a mind that's that...that inhumane.

Interviewer: are you ready for what's coming?

Blaise Bailey Finnegan III: Ready as I'll ever be.

Most people aren't.

There's a little saying... Dates back for generations...

Interviewer: Go on...

Blaise Bailey Finnegan III: Be prepared for anything at any time from anybody, don't take no shit, always stand your ground. People wanna come up to me and run their mouth - guess what? I'll throw them through the fucking window... I won't think a thing of it.

Interviewer: Would you mind reciting your poem for us?

Blaise Bailey Finnegan III: Not at all, I don't see why... I don't see why I couldn't.

There's an evil virus that's threatening mankind
It's not state of the art, it's a serious state of the mind
The muggers, the backstabbers, the two faced elite
A menace to society, a social disease
To brainwash the mind is a social disorder
The cynics, the apathy one-upmanship order
Watching beginnings of social decay
Gloating and sneering at life's disarray
Eating away at your own self esteem
Pouncing on every word that you might be saying
To attack someone's mind is a social disorder
The constitution, the government, martial law order
Superficially smiling a shake of the hand
As soon as your back is turned treason is planned
When every good thing's laid to rest
By the governments hate, by the constitution and their lies
And every time you think you're safe
And when you go to turn away
You know they're sharpening all their knives
All in your mind
All in your head
Try to relate it
All in your mind
All in your head
Try to escape it
Without a conscience they destroy
And that's a thing that they enjoy
They're a sickness that's in all of our minds
They want to sink the ship and leave
The way they laugh at you and me
You know it happens all the time
But it only happens in your mind
The rats in the cellar you know who you are...
Or do you?
Watching beginnings of social decay...

Interviewer: Thank you for your time.

And if you're taking a walk through the garden of life
What do you think you'd expect you would see?
Just like a mirror reflecting the moves of your life
And in the river reflections of me

Just for a second a glimpse of my father I see
And in a movement he beckons to me
And in a moment the memories are all that remain
And all the wounds are reopening again

We're blood brothers, we're blood brothers
We're blood brothers, we're blood brothers

And as you look all around at the world in dismay
What do you see, do you think we have learned
Not if you're taking a look at the war-torn affray
Out in the streets where the babies are burned

We're blood brothers, we're blood brothers
We're blood brothers, we're blood brothers

There are times when I feel I'm afraid for the world
There are times I'm ashamed of us all
When you're floating on all the emotion you feel
And reflecting the good and the bad

Will we ever know what the answer to love really is?
Can you really tell me what love is?
Maybe all the things that you know that are precious to you
Could be swept away by fate's own hand

We're blood brothers, we're blood brothers
We're blood brothers, we're blood brothers

When you think that we've used all our chances
And the chance to make everything right
Keep on making the same old mistakes
Makes untipping the balance so easy
When we're living our lives on the edge
Say a prayer on the book of the dead

We're blood brothers, we're blood brothers
We're blood brothers, we're blood brothers

And if you're taking a walk through the garden of life...

If you've been keeping up with my poetry as of late, you have probably noticed that I have become almost obsessed with my dreams as of late, and am trying very hard to be as analytical as possible regarding them. I know there are some people who view dreams as "hog-wash" and idle fantasy, but I believe them to be so much more.

The problem is that people are forgetting how to dream.. In our contemporary society with people buzzing around like busy bees in a hive, no one is even thinking about dreams and how they affect our lives. Like buddy from "Waking Life" says:

"Things have been tough lately for dreamers. They say dreaming is dead, no one does it anymore. It's not dead it's just that it's been forgotten, removed from our language. Nobody teaches it so nobody knows it exists. The dreamer is banished to obscurity. Well, I'm trying to change all that, and I hope you are too. By dreaming, every day. Dreaming with our hands and dreaming with our minds. Our planet is facing the greatest problems it's ever faced, ever. So whatever you do, don't be bored, this is absolutely the most exciting time we could have possibly hoped to be alive. And things are just starting."

Ever wonder why we can recall things that seemed to have never happened to us in "real life"? Throughout my life, I've witnessed a number of events days, months, even years before they really happened in my life; people call this phenomena deja vu, but I think of it as just another form of dream-travel, but possibly a dream that has already happened in a different time-frame of reality, or maybe even in another dimension. Nonetheless, it's as if when I'm lying in my bed asleep, I am tapping into a futuristic dreamscape; but when I rise from my bed, I am none the wiser that what I had seen is something that will actually take place down the road; only when it happens do I realize the potential of the dream.

But why should this potential only be limited to deja vu? In my opinion, more people should start trying to understand the potential of ALL of our dreams, since they are one of the critical building blocks of our futures. Without dreams for the future, how will we know what we want to gain through life? And how will we know when we've obtained it? And when you do obtain your desire, will you stop dreaming and stagnate back into insecurity and boredom? Every dream we have is significant in some way, shape, or form, whether they were conceived when we were "asleep" or when we were "awake"; and not just significant to us, but to the world around us too.

Our waking lives are countless dreams put together by our brains, and are composed by not only us, but those we encounter in our daily lives; this in itself is a form of dream-travel, since we are literally entering each other's waking dreams and altering their course of destiny significantly. How significantly? That's up to the observers at hand.

Part 2? We'll see.

Let me know what you think of my dream rant.

Keep on dreaming boy, cause when you stop dreamin' its time to die.

Instead of giving me a word, this time around, I'd like something a bit more creative. In the past, I've had people give me random concepts to base my poetry on, and then see what I could come up with; it worked quite well, actually, and I came up with some romantic poetry that I was proud of.

So, for those interested, I would like as many comments as possible stating unique concepts that you think would work well in a poem; they don't necessarily have to be romance-based, either. The more description you give me, the better-suited my poetry will be to your concept, too, so please keep that in mind.

Thanks in advance,

So, it's almost 2AM, and here I am wide awake, so let me tell you about one of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen.

A couple of friends and I went to Arichat today, and on our way back, we stopped a place that's secluded from civilization but right next to the water. As we were gathered around, lighting a spliff in the warmth of the night, I took immediate notice of the full moon that seemed to illuminate my entire being. I could have just stared at the moon forever, and watched the waves as the light swam along with them.

Not only that, but I just walked back from my buddy's place, and it was probably the most enjoyable walk I've ever had. There was virtually no one to be seen (minus the 2 automobiles that I encountered along the way, that just passed as quickly as they came), and the moon made it so the darkness was absolutely lacking of fearfulness.

So, in total, it was a classic night, let me tell you.
Aye me...

After finishing my most recent poem, Sighs of Solitude, I decided to do up a rough estimate of how many poems I have written to date.

My poetry folder has a few works here and there that I haven't finished yet, but a reasonable count would be...

257.

WOW. I only started writing poetry in 2003, and I've already completed over 200 poems.. Albeit, I'm less than satisfied with a lot of my earlier poems, but even I can admit that I've come a long way over the past 3-4 years.

My main mission in life is to someday have at least one of my poems published before I die, and as long as people are willing to read and let their minds awaken, I feel like I actually have a chance at meeting my goals.

Here's to the future of poetry, and the hopes of me making some sort of impact in it.

Cheers,

A couple months ago I tried a little thing where I would get people to make random suggestions to me, and I would use such suggestions in my poetry (e.g. writing about a sand-castle, writing about a three-legged dog). It really helped with my creativity, and I would like to try it again, but only a little different this time around.

What I would like from anyone who reads this, is a single word. That's right. Just one word. Feel free to comment on this journal entry as much as you would like, but make sure the word you want is on a single line so I can pick it out.

This was also partially inspired by the movie "Before Sunrise" by Richard Linklater, in which this couple walks by a beggar sitting by the water. Instead of asking for the couple for money, he asks for a single word, and then states that he will write a poem with the word in it, and then they can pay him whatever they feel like afterwards. It's a beautiful and romantic movie, so you can consider this as a recommendation to watch it, too! Haha.

Obviously I'm not looking for money, though; I'm more so interested in what words people will come up with, and then what I can do with said words.

This is how it will work:

For the next week or so, I would like a single word per day in the form of a comment to this article by each individual, and I will write a poem with that word in it. Now, if by the time I notice the comments, there are three new words posted by multiple people, I will use the three words in a single poem.
Hopefully that doesn't sound confusing to anyone, and I apologize if it does!

Now, think hard, and let the words flow!

Well, I have once again evolved. Into what? I'm not exactly sure, to be honest. My mind has been taking giant leaps of existential expansion lately, and I can feel that something big is about to happen.

My friends and I seen lots of great shows at the beautiful Evolve festival in Antigonish, NS, Canada, including Lotus, Classified, Slowcoaster, Wintersleep, Carmen Townsend & The Shakey Deals, The Tom Fun Orchestra, among others. There was not a single artist that I didn't enjoy to some extent, and I thank the Evolve staff for coming up with such a sweet-ass schedule.

I met lots of cool people too, like always, since Evolve is always full of some of the most enjoyable, entertaining, and down-to-Earth human beings available on this planet; some of these people I hope to keep in touch with and possibly get to know even more.

All in all, it was a great weekend, and I feel extremely poetically inspired right now; there's lots of interesting thoughts and emotions flowing through my very essence, and I can't wait to share them with all of you!

With love,

Just because I haven't been writing as much as I used to, that doesn't mean that I've lost my passion for poetry. Oh, no. It's actually to quite the contrary.

I've been going through some severe existential issues as of late, and my head's been going in and out of reality for, well, almost two years (ever since I graduated from high school). It's most likely the same with most people my age, but this is just my take on it.

My head's so filled with thoughts right now it's hard to pick them all out and write with them since they're so scattered; as soon as I have them under control, I promise to post a new poem for those who actually enjoy reading my writing.

I've been watching a lot of movies lately that have been helping me out; I find that by hearing the thoughts of others, it helps to align my own thoughts (which is why I've been reading and commenting on a lot of poetry lately). It's only normal human behavior though, since we can't live in pure isolation without subjecting ourselves to social degradation, among other things. Anyways, in the past couple of weeks, I have watched [and recommend] the following movies: Waking Life; Before Sunrise; Before Sunset; A Scanner Darkly; I Heart Huckabees; Dark City; Spirited Away; Paprika; What the Bleep! Do We Know; The Elegant Universe.

If anyone has any thoughts to share with me, please do so! I'm always awaiting the comments from a fellow lover of art, because it's the lovers of art that can truly see the world in all the colors that the it was meant to be painted with.

I've been writing pretty steadily lately, which makes me happy. Without my poetry, I'd probably be an emotional wreck, so I'm glad I've been busy.

I've been working on a play for a while now too, and I finally have a very good idea on how the storyline is going to play out. It's going to be along the lines of "Romeo & Juliet", but certainly not exactly. I have different twists and themes in mind, and my writing style for the play is a mixture of archaic and modern word structures. I've decided to use some of the poems that I already have written for the play, and I'm also writing parts specific for the play.

^ I think that I already mentioned my play somewhere on here, but maybe not. Either way, I've been working on quite a bit lately, and I hope to finish it before the summer. I already have the prologue, and first act is almost finished; and I have pieces for the other acts scattered about, with the ideas for the rest already planned-out.

My technique has improved immensely since when I started writing poetry, so I'm hoping you can enjoy my literature as much as I do.
