I always appreciate the comments and helpful advice so keep 'em comin'!!

Sometimes you just need to get out of town and experience different spaces and places. That’s what I decided to do this past weekend.

A few months ago I purchased tickets to see Cirque du Soleil’s Saltimbanco at The Bank of Kentucky Center in Newport, KY. Since the show was in the middle of the day on Saturday we decided to make a whole day of it. We wanted to experience some of the best that Newport had to offer.

We started our day with a trip to Newport on the Levee. This is an entertainment complex much like our own Fourth Street Live! here in Louisville. They have restaurants and bars, shopping, and it also serves as home to the Newport Aquarium which was our destination.

As I have mentioned before I am a huge fan of all things turtle so when I noticed a Sea Turtle walking around out side the aquarium you know I got excited. Don’t worry, it wasn’t a real turtle, it was the mascot for the Aquarium, Tango the Turtle. I got my picture taken with him and then we headed inside for some fishy good-times!

Neport Aquarium is home to 70 exhibits and 14 galleries and over a million gallons of fresh and salt waters! The whole place was alive with hundreds of different fish and other aquatic creatures. Among my favorites were the Angelfish, Seahorses, and, of course, the Turtles. There was one animal in particular that caught my eye though. It was the Sea Urchins. I never knew how colorful they actually were. Whenever you see them from a distance they look like spiny black porcupines and nothing more. But upon closer inspection I noticed they were actually quite colorful with blues and greens lining the spines, white spots that seem almost reflective around their mouths, and orange lips to draw in unsuspecting prey.

After walking the entire length of the Aquarium we ventured out to make our way to Cirque. As we were walking back to the car I noticed a couple of musicians playing in the court so we headed over to listen for a bit. We dropped a couple dollars into the guitar case and as we did they invited us to play with them for a few moments. I took up a small DJembe drum and had a blast playing with them. I wish it could’ve have lasted longer but it was time to get going.

Cirque du Soleil’s Saltibanco explores the urban experience in all its myriad forms: the people who live there, their idiosyncrasies and likenesses, families and groups, the hustle and bustle of the street and the towering heights of skyscrapers. Between whirlwind and lull, prowess and poetry, Saltimbanco takes spectators on an allegorical and acrobatic journey into the heart of the city.

Saltimbanco is a Cirque du Soleil signature show inspired by the urban fabric of the metropolis and its colorful inhabitants. Decidedly baroque in its visual vocabulary, the show’s eclectic cast of characters draws spectators into a fanciful, dreamlike world, an imaginary city where diversity is a cause for hope. At least, that’s what the billing says, and I agree!

The whole show was completely amazing. There were clowns, trapeze artists, a pretty amazing band, and even a Ring Master! It was like stepping out of our world and into this brightly colored playground of the imagination. This is the third time I have been to a Cirque production and I am completely hooked. Each time it’s something new and unexpected, but everytime is spectacular.

To finish our day we headed back to Levee for some authentic German fare and tasty beer. The Höfbrauhaus in Newport was the first to make the voyage across the pond from Munich, Germany. I have been lucky enough to visit both and our’s certainly does the original justice. They have great food and a new seasonal beer each month. This month they have “King Ludwig” the official beer of Oktoberfest in Munich. I opted for that and some Schnitzel with Noodles. Both were exceptional. For a moment, it almost felt like I was back in Munich.

To say we had a full day would be a severe understatement so I’ll simply say that we enjoyed every bit of it. Newport has tons of things to do and we weren’t even able to see a third. I definitely reccomend it if you’re looking to get away for a while. It’s close enough that you can make it a day trip but far enough that you could turn it into a weekend getaway. I will certainly be back there soon, there is plenty more I want to see and do before I’ll be satisfied!

<img src="http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm134/LorriAnne83/divider.png?t=12127...

I’ve performed on street corners, had the best crab cake sandwiches you can get south of Maine, browsed through, and even purchased some of the most incredible art I’ve ever seen. What could bring all of these activities together with such regularity? The Saint James Court Art Show.

I remember the first year I went to the show in 1997. I was a freshman at DuPont Manual High School and studying at the Youth Performing Arts School. The art show is a huge fund-raising opportunity for the school every year because of it’s proximity and abundant parking space for show-goers. We were always out of school that day for an in-service day so it was the perfect arrangement.

I spent my first St. James Art Show with a group of four other singers from my school choir, singing madrigals in Central Park. The money we collected was pooled and added to our fund-raising totals for the day. This year as I remembered those happy high school years singing in the park I noticed how many other street performers have taken up residence at this yearly event. From a barbershop quartet and a Jazz Saxophonist to the littlest violinist I have encountered yet. There was music everywhere you turned which was a fitting sound track to the stunning visuals of art and artists that engulfed your eyes.

The little girl playing violin was concentrating ever so intently on her very slow but dedicated version of “Jesus Loves Me.” When I stopped to take her picture she faltered for a moment. Her mother, who was sitting behind her, urged her to keep playing but this little performer insisted that the”camera was distracting her.” Both her mother and I laughed and I replied that when she became a famous violinist people would be taking her picture all the time. The little girl smiled and started playing “Jesus Loves Me” with all the zeal she could muster.

Among the familiar faces of artists that return each year there were some very impressive newcomers. Among them was a man named Michael Rawson from Ohio. Mr. Rawson carves rocking horses. When I came upon him he was sitting on one of his rocking horses, eating ice cream, and smiling. If there ever was a “real” Peter Pan, I imagine he would look something like this. I was so drawn to him that I asked him right then if I could take his picture, ice cream and all. He laughed and there may even have been a little blush in his cheek, but he heartily agreed.

My last stop was to the Hosey Farms booth for some homegrown, raw honey. I bought my first jar of honey from them last fall and have been hooked ever since. I am especially fond of this honey specifically because it’s produced here in Louisville. If you’re like me and suffer from seasonal allergies this honey is heaven sent. A tablespoon of local, raw honey helps allergy sufferers by exposing them to local pollens in a non-harmful way. This in turn increases your body’s natural defense mechanisms that protect you from those sneezy, itchy eye, snuffly allergy attacks. Plus, Hosey’s Honey simply tastes delicious!

After a long day of looking at art I was certainly ready to find a nice comfy chair to rest my feet. It was another great Saint James Art Show and I can’t wait until next year!

BTW: If you are looking for some awesome webcomics and/or graphic novels you should DEFINITELY check out:

The Dreamer
by
(and if you like it you should donate so Lora can keep up with her awesome weekly updates! )

The Phoenix Requiem
by

Cathars...

This weekend we all decided to head up to Joe Huber’s Family Farm and Winery for some home-cooking, wine-tasting, pumpkin-picking good times.

Apparently, the rest of Kentuckiana had the same idea in mind for their Sunday afternoon as well! When we got there were bombarded by the cacophony of children running around looking for their perfect pumpkin for Halloween carving, parents chasing said kids, and people generally enjoying the wonderful weather, albeit a little on the warm side.

For those kids who were looking for that perfect pumpkin the choices were endless! There were painted pumpkins big and small, “Freaky” pumpkins which looked as if they had peanuts growing on their skins, gourds of every imaginable variety, and those classic “Charlie Brown and the Great Pumpkin” pumpkins that every kid dreams about. Pumpkins were everywhere, on tractor beds, in bushel bins, in the market, and people were picking them in the fields. There was surely a pumpkin for anyone and everyone.

Beyond the pumpkin patches there was still more fun to be had. Huber’s Winery is set aside a large lake stocked with Koi, Catfish, Blue Gills, Snapping Turtles, Swans, and a wide variety of Ducks all paitently waiting to be fed by you. So that was our next stop.

I have an affinity for turtles so I spent the majority of my pellets attempting to get out far enough fo them. The only problem was the turtle I was aiming for was significantly slower than the fish or fowl… So it became a team effort! My boyfriend distracted the fish and feathered fiends with his food and I fed the turtle. All the while I’m cheering on this silly reptile, saying things like “Go Turtle, don’t let the Swan get it!” and “You can do it Turtle, just a little farther!”

I’m pretty sure one of the other families on the wharf thought I was a nutcase. In the end, the fish still got more than the turtle but I felt a sense of accomplishment for the what I was able to get to him.

Our last stop of the excursion was Huber’s Winery. If you’ve never had their Spiced Apple Wine, believe me, you are missing out. The wine is the turning point in the year for me. I know summer is over when Huber’s has their Spiced Apple Wine again. They also have a TON of other varieties there, and not just wines, they also have a huge selection of brandys as well. We had a fruit and cheese tray (all of which was made or grown right there at Huber’s) and shared a bottle of the Vignoles, a semi-sweet white wine. It was a great ending to a great day.

Until next time!

BTW: If you are looking for some awesome webcomics and/or graphic novels you should DEFINITELY check out:

The Dreamer
by
(and if you like it you should donate so Lora can keep up with her awesome weekly updates! )

The Phoenix Requiem
by

Catharsis by JB
by

All of these are amazing and their authors equally so! I mean, gah, I could write about last weekend but all I did was go to a small town festival full of politicians and strollers... I hate strollers by the way... their respective drivers always seem to find my ankles... grrrrr.

This blog is technically supposed to be written in an editorial/newsy/catchy way. This is not a problem for me any other time. It seems that blogging for a grade has turned my creative blogger machine off. Le sigh.

All I know is I better come up with something soon or I face the wrath of my editor. Not my number one choice.
HELP! I need my muses back!! Human interaction?!? GASP! NOOOOOOOOOO!

This has been the general reaction to the power outage that has ravaged our city today. Somewhere around 230,000 households in the Kentuckiana area are without power this evening due to a wind storm that had gusts upwards of 75 mph. It was what Ike had left for us. Gee...thanks Ike, this is what I always wanted.

So now, left to their own devices, people don't know what they're supposed to do. I, of course, have no room to talk. I came to the university so I could write a paper for my online class which is due at 11:59p... because certainly online professors have no pity for people without power. In which case I am not losing 50 points, and if this particular prof. is the exception to the rule, I suppose I've just earned some brownie points. With the necessity of that paper being completed I am here, with power and that happy internet menagerie to keep me entertained. But for those people who didn't venture out on the debris laiden streets the scene is much more dark (literally!)

Maybe when I leave my haven and venture home I will be one of the fortunate few whose power has returned and I won't have to figure out a way to entertain myself in the dark. If I'm not so lucky then it'll either be boardgames or reading, either will be by candle light!

I will spare you some of the details but the main storyline consisted of me running through a city that was unfamiliar to me, at night. I wasn't running away from anyone, I was actually running, I should clarify that this was a playful run, alongside of some parade-esk event.

From here I ended up in a hotel room with Cage... I remember I made a comment about locking the chain so that no one could intrude even if they had a key. Odd.

Skip ahead again, this time we are in a house in a valley of some sort. It's my wedding day and might I add the dress was freaking gorgeous!!! But the weird part is the wedding is very small, maybe 10 people total and though Cage is at the alter he's not the person I'm marrying.

I can't quite make out the groom's face but Cage is the best man. So I'm walking to the alter and before I even get there Cage says he can't just stand there and watch as I marry someone else (what?!?!) and he starts towards the door but collapses before he gets there. I run to him in a state that clearly says: I care very deeply for this person. Everyone is staring at me because this was, it would seem, an announcement no one was expecting.

A little time goes by, I'm no longer in my wedding dress but I'm still in a corsetted dress, it's almost a peasant style I would say. It's a steel-blue color, almost like a rain cloud. I go upstairs to the main floor only to find that Cage is packing to leave, clearly his collapse had no erased his feelings of being a jilted lover... except I have this overwhleming feeling of not wanting him to leave, but I don't want to say it inside the house... so I go outside and try to get up this steep embankment that I have decided (in my dream) is the way to leave.

I'm guessing the plan was to stop him before he left, and perhaps even leave with him... but it was too steep. I kept grabbing at the trees and foliage on the hillside but I couldn't even get a little headway. I pause for a moment to see Cage and my intended groom walk out talking to one another...

Then I woke up...

I hate that; when dreams end before they conclude... All I wanted was to go back to sleep and hope it would start up again but my cat had other plans for me. Oh well...
Sorry Nick!

I just thought I would take a small respite to vent a little (through writing, how ironic...) and share my pain!

I say editor because that's how our professo would prefer we acknowledge her. We will be publishing our own legitimate online magazine this semester so we may list on our resume's that we are published writers. (How cool is that!!)

Within the first five minutes of class not only had about 17 people walked out of the room, Prof. Laidman had also professed that she had not given out ANY 'A's last semester. Not promising.

You see, in order to enroll in the class at all you are supposed to have taken Newswriting. This makes complete sense because you have to have a solid foundation in that are to really succeed at writing a good feature piece. So when she stated that if you hadn't had newswriting you would "fail her class" you can imagine the suprise and shock of those people who hadn't had the prerequisite class and were still able to enroll.

Having had newswriting, I stayed back and endured the first class well, I even recieved some accolades on our first in-class free write. (YAY!) It was funny though, as we left the class I overheard a couple of my remaining classmates refer to as "our own personal wicked witch"... I don't know though. She is certainly intimidating, blunt, and straight forward, but in my opinion that is the embodiment of a good editor. I'm excited to see how far she can push my writing skills and what the rest of the semester holds!

Once our mag. is up and running I'll post a link on my profile to anyone who's interested. We'll also have our own "beat" blogs so you can check that out as well!

Here's to an awesome semester!
~LorriAnne

BTW: If you are looking for some awesome webcomics and/or graphic novels you should DEFINITELY check out:

The Dreamer
by
(and if you like it you should donate so Lora can keep up with her awesome weekly updates! )

The Phoenix Requiem
by

Catharsis by JB
by

All of these are amazing and their authors equally so! I just hope that when I pick up my photos they will give me the judges comments as well. It's always helpful to know what they did or didn't like. In other news, I am looking forward to next year already. As it turns out there is also a category for scrapbooking pages which is a HUGE passtime of mine so I may enter that as well as the photography category.

I have 8 days of summer bliss left and then it's back to the grind of college and classwork... I am happy though, I won't be working full-time and going to school full-time at the same time this year. I made the decision after my unfortunate job-loss to not put myself through that horrible existence again. Believe me it's completely not worth the stress and hardship. This way I can really focus on getting my schoolwork done to the best of my ability. I can't wait. Especially since this will be my last year and then I'm DONE!! WOOOOOT! No senioritis for me though; five classes this semester and six next!!! AGH!! I can do it though, I have faith!

Well that's about it for now!

Oh and GO PHELPS!!! 8 freakin' GOLD medals!
A big "Thank You!!" to everyone who's taken the time to look at my gallery! I always appreciate the comments and helpful advice so keep 'em comin'!!

So I was originally supposed to be camping today and tomorrow at Cumberland Falls but due to some unexpected trail closings we decided to come home a day early. The three trails we specifically went there to hike were unfortunately closed because of tornado damage . I was still able to get some incredible pictures of the falls and of some nature stuff which I will post later.

But more importantly than any of that:
IT'S MY BIRTHDAY!! Now I know that most people stop caring about birthdays after the age of 21 but not me! I am super excited about my 25th birthday!! Why you ask? Because the people around me care enough to make it awesome. My boyfriend and other amazing friends are planning to take me out for a night on the town. PLUS, I get to go to the zoo with my boyfriend for the third year in a row (since we didn't stay at our campsite.) It's becoming a tradition that I am happy to keep up! Especially since I love the zoo so much!

Anywho! YAY BIRTHDAY!!

PS- my mood hasn't been "defeated" since June...
It's more like this -> <img src="http://e.deviantart.com/emoticons/e/excited.gif" width="23" height="19" alt=":excited:" title="OMG! I always appreciate the comments and helpful advice so keep 'em comin'!!

So for those of you who read my last journal entry, you know my paying job gave me the boot recently.
At first I was pretty upset and shocked because nothing like this has ever happened to me before. So I wasn't quite sure what I was going to do... Eventually I just decided to take sometime to let things calm down. I relaxed a little, spent a lot of time outside, and went on a couple photohunts.

What I relaized was that is is most likely one of those moments that has the potential to be life-changing. I mean, losing your job is a pretty tumultuous, but this can really be an amazing opportunity if I make it happen... I got to thinking about where I would be if this hadn't happen. The way I see it I would, almost certainly, have been stuck in a cubicle farm for the next few years attached to a desk by a headset. (If you've never worked in a customer service call center count yourself lucky... it's a slow painful existence.)

This give me both the motive and opportunity to strive for the things that I really want in life. I can sincerely devote myself to school and photography; two of the more important things in my life. I can use this time to complete several projects that just keep getting pushed off because work never left me with enough energy or daylight to get them done. But most importantly I can escape the cubicle monotony that has ruled my life for the past four years.

The more I think about it, the more excited I am for what this change means for me. But most importantly I am thankful that I have a strong enough support network that I can do these things without going to the poor house. My family is simply amazing.

So as one chapter ends, a new, more tantalizing chapter begins. I welcome it and I thank my lucky stars that I can see the good through the bad.

Here's to actually living for once and not merely existing!

A big "Thank You!!" to everyone who's taken the time to look at my gallery!
I always appreciate the comments and helpful advice so keep 'em comin'!!
___________________________________________________

I was at the gas station today scowling at the prices as I filled my car... normal for just about everyone who is an American and spoiled by our previously lavishly low gas prices... *sigh* and I decided to go in and grab a water from the convenience store. So far, nothing unusual, nothing strange, nothing nifty, just ilses of the usual convenience store snacks and whatnot. I get to the water case and I noticed a pretty cool bottle, kind of hour glass-ish (I will provide a pic later when I'm not at work.) It's called ethos WATER and under the logo is their mission statment: "Helping children get clean water." It made me interested enough to turn the bottle around and keep reading, this is what they had to say:

"We began with a simple idea:"Let's create a bottle water to help children around the world get clean water." We felt compelled to make a difference, because more than 1 billion people lack clean water accessm and the problem affects children most. Ethos Water donates 5 cents for every bottle sold toward humanitarian water programs. Our current goal is to invest $10 million in these programs by 2010. Already, we're helping children and their communities in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Thank you for joining us in our efforts.
Peter Thum and John Greenblatt, Founders"

I ended up purchasing the water and doing a small good deed for the day. I encourage anyone who reads this to watch for this water in a convenience store near you. The next time your feeling parched maybe you can make a difference in a life... I know it's an awfully small jesture but when you combine small jestures together, the outcome is often more immense than we could ever imagine.

[edit] Here are the pictures I promised!!

Hope you're all having a wonderful day!! ^__^
-LorriAnne
______________________________________________________

BTW: If you are looking for some awesome webcomics and/or graphic novels you should DEFINITELY check out:

The Dreamer
by
(and if you like it you should donate so Lora can keep up with her awesome weekly updates! )

The Phoenix Requiem
by

Catharsis by JB
by

All of these are amazing and their authors equally so!
