Seeing as I am now in my 15th year of being a phan of The Phantom of the Opera, it seems only natural that I do a journal feature of Phantom fanart!

Of course I know many fine phan artists and it was difficult to decide how to go about doing this journal, but in the end I settled on a choosing pieces that appeal to my personal aesthetic tastes, whether or not they may be popular or underexposed. I have chosen to select only one piece per artist, but please do not feel offended if you or your favorite artist is not represented! I love looking at phanart and I applaud everyone who takes the time to produce works about this wonderful story.

<img src="http://th07.deviantart.com/fs32/150/f/2008/207/8/f/Angel_of_M...

As promised, here is the first of what will (hopefully) be a series of art features I do while I have my subscription.

It seems like in this day of Wacoms and OpenCanvas and all the wonders afforded to artists by digital technology, traditional painting can sometimes get overlooked. I myself prefer to work in non-digital media, so it is always gratifying to run across pieces done with old school techniques and materials.
Most of you have at least heard of the Orphaned Works legislation that's been kicking around Capitol Hill for a while now.

For those who don't, it's a proposal that, if passed, would require that all artists register their creative works with registries (that have not yet been created) in order to guarantee their copyrights. Of course, in order to register works, artists would have to pay for this service. If an artist does not register their work with these authorities, then anyone who sees artwork posted online or anywhere can check if the work has been registered. If it hasn't, then said person is free to use the artwork, with or without the consent of the original artist and without being required to give any sort of credit or compensation for that usage.

THIS IS WRONG!

Furthermore, this piece of legislation, which had been considered dead, was ADDED TO THE BAILOUT BILL THAT HAS JUST BEEN PASSED BY THE SENATE!

For the sake of artists and creative persons everywhere, you NEED to get in contact with your US Representative in the House of Representatives and make it known that you oppose this bill!

The Orphaned Works Bill, if passed, will strip artists of all rights to their work and seems designed to cater to special interests bent on profiting off of the registry fees artists would have to pay and/or the fact that they wouldn't have to pay artists with nonregistered works for the use of said works.

Everyone, go to [link] and let your voices be heard!

PROTECT YOUR ARTWORK AND YOUR INTEGRITY!

Learn more about the bill here: [link]

~Madame~

I've just finished reading quite possibly the most darkly beautiful and entertaining books I've had the pleasure to encounter in a long time.

The Devil's Rose [link] (link now fixed!) by dark fantasy art master Brom (who some of you know as one of my artistic heroes), is a stunning work about Hell, betrayal, redemption and love set against the backdrop of the scorched Texas desert. If you like the Wild West, if you like demons, if you like tragic love stories, heck - if you like a good, fast-paced story, you have to read this book.

It goes without saying that the illustrations are absolutely magnificent; each page is a work of art. There are no plain white pages. The book is overflowing with evocative weathered parchment backdrops, blood splatters, bullet holes, and of course, Brom's darkly glorious paintings.

The story itself is generally well-written (though I did find one minor grammatical error) and weaves a tale full of twists and turns that will challenge what you initially think about the characters. There are some good philosophical moments here as well - albeit not exactly Nietzsche, particularly as pertains to religion and the fate of the soul.

You will love the main character, Cole, for his dogged determination, as well as for his tragic past. One part Clint Eastwood, one part Vampire Hunter D, and all awesome. He's become one of my favorite literary characters. (Crap, more fanart inspiration!)

Just a word of caution; this book is not for the really young or the squeamish. There is blood and gore and death aplenty, as well as a goodly amount of swearing and bit of obscenity. So approach with caution.

Otherwise; GET THIS BOOK! You won't regret it.

Did you know that there are some 360 works of "political art" on dA that depict President George W. Bush as a Nazi? Most of them have him superimposed against the red, white and black Nazi swastika flag, a shoddy black Hitler mustache scribbled onto his face. Also commonplace is his arm upraised in the Nazi salute position. And, in some twisted tribute to the Manson family, many incarnations have a swastika carved into his forehead.

What the hell?

I do not think that Bush is a perfect president; the man has made mistakes, and said mistakes may take some time to correct. However, anyone who compares him to Adolf Hitler, the totalitarian leader personally responsible for the terrorization and deaths of millions of innocents, and posessing an insatiable appitite for world domination, has trivialized and misunderstood the full gravity of that terrible chapter in world history.

Furthermore, if someone does wish to level an artistic criticism at Bush, please do us all the decency of trying to find a novel, and more intellectual manner of presenting your argument! If you honestly believe that you're being clever and funny by drawing the same thing, the same idea, that hundreds of others have drawn, you're sadly mistaken.

With all due deference to the rights of others to dissent with my own opinions, I have long been interested in the much-reviled/revered mall store called Hot Topic. I enjoyed the fact that it rebelled against the mainstream pop-fashions of such enterprises as Old Navy, The Gap, Abercrombie(s), and the like. Those rusty iron gates with their red glass accents and the pervasive dark atmosphere of the shop appealed strongly to me and always made it a fun visit, regardless of whether or not I bought anything there.

Imagine my surprise when yesterday, whilst wandering through a mall, I ran across a Hot Topic that I did not recognize...

- Gone was the brooding urban wasteland portal, replaced instead by a clean-cut, conventional pale-brown brick facade with plate glass

- Gone were all the cool outlandish gothic gowns, capes, coats, top hats, angel/devil wings, replaced instead by a plethora of cargo pants and fitted tees printed with such properties as Harry Potter and typical rock band logos (And if I'm not mistaken, the store seems primarily geared towards female customers insofar as apparel goes).

- Perhaps the most offensive of all: The blazing red sign above the door of the shop had been replaced by a inobtrusive 'HT' scrawl in black and yellow.

- Note: Torrid, the plus size branch of Hot Topic, had similarly undergone a total makeover with most of its apparel resembling castoffs from Limited Too.

WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO HOT TOPIC?!

It's utterly depressing to see that such a unique and boldly eccentric shop has come to cave in to safer, more mainstream marketing and merchandising.

If your local Hot Topic doesn't look like this already, consider this fair warning as to what's in store for it.

Oh the horror....

As part of my recent artistic endeavours, I've started to look into fine art magazines and read up on contemporary fine artists and techniques. Thus far, I've found American Artist to be a publication that generally appeals to me, introducing me to such accomplished artists as Fred Wessel ( [link] ) and Sasha Kinens ( [link] ).

Now I've never received any training whatsoever in oils and my experiences with watercolors is limited at best. My current paints of choice are Liquitex High Viscosity grade acrylics. I love the brilliance of color and texture of acrylics, along with ease of water clean-up.

It just struck me as odd that not a single artist, article, or ad in American Artist so far has featured works done in acrylic paint. Does this signify some sort of professional bias against acrylics as somehow inferior or amateur in nature compared to older paint types (i.e. - oil, watercolor, egg tempera)?

While we're on the subject, it seems like digital painting also gets the shaft in the magazine; but that doesn't surprise me so much as the seeming aversion to acrylic, a 'real' paint type.

Interesting.

A journal update!

As some of you may recall, I had previously posted a journal entry regarding the question of 'fanart' vs. 'fine art' and the difference between public reception of each genre.

After having gone on something of an artistic hiatus while I had some other issues to deal with in my life, I found that when I finally had time to devote to art again, I had no real desire to do anything fandom-based.

Instead, even the most mundane exercise, that of a profile portrait painting, became so much more invigorating and satisfying, both on a personal level and an artistic level, that I think, at least for a while, I will be devoting most of my efforts towards original/non-fandom artwork.

This is a path I haven't really trod with any seriousness since my senior thesis exhibition last spring and I find myself missing the excitement of creativity from original thought to original work.

So, my apologies to those who have always enjoyed and supported my fanart. I cannot thank you enough and I appreciate all of you! However, at this time I don't think I'll be doing very much of it. I feel I need some time to discover and rediscover my own visions and style, rather than relying on the ideas of others.

Far be it from me to scorn and turn my nose up at fanart, but right now I crave to tread upon less-trodden ground.

Now be good deviant buddies and don't point out any Phantom art contests to me.
On bended knee, in the shadow of an unknown room
Empty eyes with no more tears to cry
Turning heavenward toward the light

Crying Jesus, help me
To see the morning light-of one more day
But if I should die before I wake,
I pray my soul to take

Can you feel the hearts of the children?
Aching for home, for something of their very own
Reaching hands, with nothing to hold on to,
But hope for a better day a better day
Crying Jesus, help me
To feel the love again in my own land
But if unknown roads lead away from home,
Give me loving arms, away from harm

Can you hear the voice of the children?
Softly pleading for silence in a shattered world?
Angry guns preach a gospel full of hate,
Blood of the innocent on their hands

Crying Jesus, help me
To feel the sun again upon my face,
For when darkness clears I know you're near,
Bringing peace again

FIRST!
by
This piece struck me with its wealth of detail, particularly in Erik's wonderfully expressive and sad eyes, and the tangled lily flowers lining his casket. As Blondeyetti mentioned, the stems of the flowers correspond to the protruding bones and muscles of Erik's physicque, and there's also something of a parallel between the shape of his ear and of the blossoms. The resulting image gives the impression that Erik is trying to blend in, to sink into that bed of flowers in order to conceal his shame and self-loathing from the gawking masses. Wonderful!

SECOND!
by
Since I am notoriously loathe to render backgrounds of almost any sort, this lovely image caught my eye. The yellows and reds compliment one another nicely and the lighting is soft and subdued; reflecting the comfort and security expreienced by Erik in his sanctuary in the cellar below Giovanni's home. I also love the clutter of papers, which illustrate young Erik's insatiable appatite for knowledge, along with his brilliant genius. A beautiful and lovely image!

THIRD!
by
*blush* Thanks guys!

The eternal struggle between fanart and original art.

So I just whipped up two entries for 's Phantom costume design contest today and I was looking over my recent entries - all of which are fanart of some sort.

This got me to thinking and noticing how, more often than not, fanart gets much more attention than original works of art. At least, that's my experience when posting my own works - and I've seen that's the case on a few of my dA buddies' galleries as well.

I mean, it's always flattering when one's artwork is faved/commented on, regardless of what the work is of. However, there is a certain satisfaction to be had whenever someone praises a work or body of work that is totally of your own imagination and creation; particularly something that you've put a lot of conceptual ideas and development into and that you're proud of. But even so, recognition of these works may be lacking in comparison to fanart, which has a ready-made appreciative pool of viewers.

On the other hand, it is fun to make fanart, and there seems to always be another contest to enter that taps into your fan-ness. (exhibit A: endless procession of phantom fan art contests, woo!) Crossovers, alternate universes, illustrations, etc! A wonderful, communal world of indulging and sharing in a passion for a particular story/character!

Goodness knows I do want to do more original work, but it's so difficult to come up with an idea I'm satisfied with sometimes, and there's always that temptation to fall back on what 'works' (namely, what gets noticed - fanart). But sometimes I just get the impression that the only reason why I get a decent number of pageviews is because of my fanart and not because of my original works.

Does anyone else have this problem? It's a little frustrating to think about because on one hand, yes, you're getting hits and praise, but on the other hand, you wish that more of your own ideas would get noticed at least as much as, if not more than, your work based on the ideas of others.

Bah, excuse my rant, and have a good evening...

PS - 300 was magnificent; carnage never looked so beautiful.

The artwork in this is AMAZING! I haven't quite gotten around to reading it yet but you guys have to check it out - even if you hate comics or think comics are silly - the interior art of this book is magnificent; painterly, dynamic, dramatic, gorgeous. Major kudos to the artists!

Yeah, I know it's been a while since I submitted any serious work - a couple photos notwithstanding.

Rest assured I am busy toiling on a new piece of phanart for the Phantom-of-DA-opera contest... the subject of which is movie crossover.

I think I'll surprise you with what I chose to cross Phantom with (and for those of you who know - NO TELLING!)

So I've finally gotten around to re-photographing all the individual paintings in the Volition series under (relatively) better lighting. Though I'm not completely pleased with the slight fuzziness of the images there is at least no glare, unlike the previously posted images.

So here are the links to all eight pieces!

Broken
Extinguished
Sacrifice
Pierced
Aftermath
Balancing
Covert
Ransom - previously unshown and not included in the actual exhibition

And of course, the link to the set of seven pieces that were shown in the University gallery as part of the Senior Thesis Show HERE. I will probably be updating this image since this one is full of glare and funky lighting.

That is all,
Enjoy!

Just to let you all know that I'm not dead, seeing as I haven't updaded new work for like two months, I'm very much alive and kicking. These days my artistic endeavours are primarily focused on turning out one large painting per week for my Art Senior Project and also shooting, manipulating, and printing images for my Photography course, which of course is quite time-consuming. As is, I've not as much time as I'd like to devote to miscellaneous art projects.

I probably won't reveal many, if any, of the paintings that have been earmarked for my Senior exhibition prior to the opening of the show in April, but I probably will be showing off some of my photography work. And hopefully, hopefully, I'll find time to do a fun piece or two outside of my body of academic work.

In any even, thanks for your continued support and visits and I hope to be able to show you something new soon!

Alright - as much as I tend to not be as caring about the whole Harry Potter verse as some of my friends are (and more often than not find myself at the mercy of their squeals of glee over new trailers, pics, spoilers, music, etc . . . from the upcoming 3525th film in the series - ok so 4th) there ARE aspects of the epic that I do enjoy.

Such as Professor Severus Snape.

Thus I was glad, for once, when one of my most persistant Potterhead, tossed this lovely little article about the Potions Master in my direction:

Severus Snape: One teacher’s hero
This ‘Harry Potter’ professor has a smirk and a withering glare for students
by Mary Beth Ellis
[link]

To give you a sample, here is a quote from the piece:

"I wish I could handle the situation more like Severus Snape might. There would be none of this smiley-smiley “I’ve enjoyed teaching all of you” business for Snape, who would deliver unto all one final glare before retiring to his dungeon for a relaxing evening of poking baby kittens with a stick."

Ahh - so another Halloween has come at last! This most fantastic and fun of holidays - a time of costumes, candy, and pranks, is upon us once more.

And of course, like all Halloweens - I've done this one in style Check my SCRAPS page for photos of my Phantom of the Opera Costume!

Anyhow, so storytime for all of you who love to listen to Halloween hijinks.

A bunch of my friends are dressed up as Jedi and Sith, complete with plastic lightsabers that light up, make noise, and all that. So, they made, shall we say, arrangements to interrupt their classes - and I, the random Phantom of the lot, tailed along to see the aftermath.

Scenario 1: MG's English class. RK, dressed as a Sith, storms up to the English classroom, throws open the door, thus causing everyone in the class to go silent, freeze, and stare at him. He points his glowing red lightsaber to MG and growls, "You!". MG leaps up, "I'll take care of this," draws his Jedi green lightsaber and leaps across the classroom out into the hall where the two duel for about 30 seconds - with the result of MG collapsing to the floor, dead, before he gets back up, strolls back into his class as if nothing happened, and says "Sorry about that" casually as he closes the door behind him. To add further hilarity - we find out later that the class had been discussing Don Quixote and the professor had been saying "Some people even live in a world beyond reality and prefer a fantasy existance" at which point RK Sith had burst into the room. Really priceless timing.

Scenario 2: ST's Italian class. RK (again) and BM dressed as Sith, storm up to the door of ST's Italian class, fling open the door, point both their red sabers into the room at ST. RK (again) growls "You!" and ST comes flying out, with Jedi blue saber and robes and all I can see from my vantage point in the hall is the blue saber flashing from within the classroom and the two Sith taking him on one at a time (they can't both fit through the door) until ST dashes out of the classroom and a 3-way duel commences in the hallway. The teacher comes out and clutches onto the door handle - clearly terrified and confused - while the fight continues. It ends with a dead BM Sith, and ST goes back into his class triumphantly and the door closes behind him. Well, that would have been the end of it had we not noticed that during the battle ST's pen and wallet had fallen out of his pants and were laying on the hallway floor so RK picked up the items and tossed open the door again - with lightsaber glowing as though he were about to start another battle - only to stroll in and announce "You lost these in the hallway, you Jedi scum!" and then he left. We find out later that the poor timid little Italian lady had never ever seen any Star Wars film ever before.

And of course in both cases the classes went out of control.

Huzzah!

Oh and tonight there's going to be an 8 Jedi/Sith battle (plus one lone Phantom) in/around the Cafeteria and Chapel. This should be interesting . . . .

My thoughts, my prayers, my hopes - go out to the families of London and the UK, for all those harmed or killed in the terrible bombings that have occured there this morning. I wish I could be over there, helping in any way I can, and I feel useless sitting here, only being able to stare at the television news in shock.

It's such a terrible tragedy when things like these occur, particularly since London has a history of being a target for other terrorist organizations. But, as many have said - the British are a strong people and I know that they will unify and rise above this atrocity in an outpouring of kindness and mutual support.

It's times like these that bring out the best in people - but it would be even better if times like these never occured.

A prayer for peace and humanity.

Alright so I was hanging out at the Spawn.com Comic board and I ran across this thread, essentially questioning the validity of modern art. Now, for my part, I have a difficult time digesting some post-modernist stuff and you can see my reply under 'Trifari'.

Now, this is not meant as an insult to ANYONE on DA who does post-modernism - it's just an expression of my opinion of it. Feel free to debate with me if you'd like - Simply put, I'm a traditional artist; I believe in the power of the image over the power of the idea.
