As I opened the box, it had a canvas bag. I was sure it was second hand underware or something of the sort. When I released the cord on the bag i almost fell over.

It was a new full set of Bogu (That is the armor worn in Kendo) complete with bag.

The family had a good laugh as I was taken completely by the mailing label.

The bad news is that my Nikon camera died again. The first time was right after the warranty expired. I spent some good money fixing it. So and now it happens again just a few months after the last repair.

I thought Nikon was the top of the line stuff? My old Olympus is six years old and has never so much as hiccupped!
Does anyone know the email of a Nikon big-wig executive?
I found an older cat that was incarcerated at on the local animal control's "Death Row." I then proceeded to bail him out. These cats are hard to adopt out so I figured I was doing a good thing by funding his parole.

He was over two years old. His prisoner number was 24988. He also had the name "Prince." He crawled out of his cage and walked right up my arm onto my shoulder. He seemed perfect, so now he has a home.

Atsu has been missing since monday morning.

I returned from a exhausting night of call. He was no where to be seen. He always curls up with my while I sleep the near dead post-call nap.

I slept this one alone.

Every night since then I would wake up and call him from the porch and hear only the frigid night.

I checked with animal comtrol figuring he might have got arrested. They asked about his multi-color blue collar. I rushed to the vet clinic and found that they had picked up what was left.

He had been run over by someone in a rush down a quiet residential street. Someone hurrying to go somewhere in a town so small that no one has to hurry anywhere.

When I first held him, he was too small to have been taken from his Siamese mother. I nursed him with kitten milk. He would climb up to my shoulder and squeak in my ear. When he was too big to stay on my shoulder he would hijack my lap. He would always be napping while I was doing something on the computer. Many of my deviations were created with him warming my lap.

He spent many a night in bed biting my feet. Later he would spend the nights sleeping next to me. When I was spending months away from home, trying to get into a program, he slept in my laundry.

When he was sick I nursed him back to health. I fixed his injuries and held him when he was scared. He followed me around like a puppy dog.

He was more than a pet. He was my friend.

Now he is gone. My lap will be cold.

Rest in peace most wondermous cat. I will cry for you for a long time to come.

and here: [link]

DA is awash in a lot of "Fake blood spalttered everywhere" gore pictures that sometimes leave me wondering if the creator is in need of serious professional help.

I intend to show close-ups of some real life, "Face of death" photography.

Years ago we lost our first child to a brain tumor. As a result of this I began what was to be a multiple year project that involved research on brain tumors.

My project involved using electron microscopy to peer into the heart of brain tumors. My challenge was to find out just what ultrastructural changes occured when the cells were stained with a heavy metal anti-cancer drug called cis-platin.

I have sorted out some of the more interesting of the multitude of cells photgraphed.

The series will give a close up, rarely seen side of the process of life(and death) at the most basic level.

While the photgraphs are interesting in technique, the subject matter can be somewhat arcane. Please dont hesitate to send any questions about what you will see.

I cannot believe what I hear from people.

Since starting medical school I have heard people tell me what they fear most about having surgery performed on them. The one common theme of the vast majority isn't what you might think.

I know that from the few times I have had surgery done to me, there were things that gnawed at me in the back of my mind.

My worst fear was having a bad reaction to anesthesia. There are numerous ways anesthesia can become a bad thing, and I think I know the majority of them.

Then there was my fear of a bad infection. I have seen simple cases end up in the ICU or the autopsy room due to this.

Then I worried about excessive bleeding or not fixing the problem.

A distant fourth place was that the surgeon would find some hidden, lethal cancer in me.

Now, I know that perhaps I know more about this than most lay persons. Unfortunately this fear appears to be seen equally in both my medical friends as well as in lay people.

The biggest thing I see people worry about is that the suregeon and team are going to see them NAKED!

I kid you not. I just ran into another case of this a couple days ago. And this was in a member of the surgical team no less!

The result of this is often that the patient arrives in the OR still wearing their underwear. This is frustrating since more times than I care to think about, I have found myself in sterile gloves, waiting to prep the patient, and found that I had to get someone else away from their task to remove what shouldn't have been there to begin with.

A bunch of surgeons I have worked with have gotten quite angry and did some unwanted shouting at me and the nursing staff because of the delay this caused.

Maybe I dont understand this because I grew up in the sixties and seventies. Or am I just lacking in an essential hang-up?

Some people, both DA and non-DA types think that cutting people is what is great about it. Actually what brings this satisfaction is that unlike other, more boring areas of medicine, you more often than not, see your patient get better rapidly.

The best part is when the effort you put in, both before and in the OR, allows you to send the patient home feeling much better than before.
Does this make things less muddy?
