edit - after using the keyboard for a few hours, I have a few more things to say about it, so I revised the below list.

- This keyboard is not really that heavy. In fact, I think my ABS M1 might even be heavier. I was expecting something more considering that the IBM PC Keyboard my friend has weighs a ton, and uses similar technology. Being lighter isn't a bad thing, though.

- The F9 key is attached fine now, and it seems as though the keys are simply easily removable as opposed to there being an issue with build quality. This is a bit of a difference for me, seeing as it's damn near impossible to remove a key on the ABS M1.

- The sound of this keyboard is probably a bit less than that of the ABS M1 as far as I can tell. The ABS M1, unlike this one, isn't clicky, but makes much more noise when the keys bottom out. The exception being the Space bar, which makes a bit of noise when fully depressed.

- The tactile feedback is superior to that of the ABS M1. It's definitely faster to type on (I type about 95WPM now, as opposed to maybe 80 max on the M1, and keep in mind this is without using home row or whatever that is).

- The only thing that's really bothering me right now is the Space bar. There's a bit of a dent towards the middle slightly to the right of it. It just seems like it ruins an otherwise great looking keyboard (sans logo). I can't tell if it's intentional or if it was damaged during shipping, but I couldn't remove the Space bar in any case, so I don't see a point calling Unicomp to ask.

- This thing is huge, and the Unicomp logo is extremely ugly.

I'm sick of the shitty dAmn client that deviantART hasn't updated in the past 9000 years. Yes, I realize that almost everyone uses Firefox and dAx or SuperdAmn to add all of the features that should be included by default, and yes I realize that most deviantART users don't use dAmn in the first place, and that it's not exactly a priority to update.

But what the hell? Why should we have to use Firefox to have a half-decent chatting experience? All SuperdAmn and dAx are, are GreaseMonkey scripts. While dA obviously can't add all of the features that are included since they make use of local storage, why can't they at least add a few simple things, that wouldn't take much effort at all? Like away messages, or /join and /part-ing multiple channels at once?

I don't know, but what I do know is that I don't expect them to integrate such features any time soon, since they haven't really added anything to dAmn except changing the visual layout since I first joined the site in 2006. What I also know, is that Firefox sucks and I'm not going to touch it with a 39 and a half foot pole, never mind touching it to use dAmn and GreaseMonkey.

Before anyone rants at me, yes, I know Firefox is the only browser that has like, over 9000 extensions and themes and stuff that make it super totally awesome. But it's also one of the least stable, and the one that leaks the most ridiculous amount of memory. I've had Firefox up to using nearly 3GB of RAM, with only a few tabs open after long periods of use. Hell, the only time Windows 7 has ever crashed on me, is when Firefox is open.

So I use Chrome. And developer builds of Chrome (Chromium, rather), have support for extensions and GreaseMonkey scripts. At first, I said "Yay!", then I realized these scripts couldn't access already existing JavaScript on webpages, and was all. So now what do I do?

I think it's about time that I code a new dAmn client, to replace the aging and broken dAmn[WIN] by plaguethenet that everybody loved using that had all the neat features of dAx in the form of a desktop application that didn't rely on Firefox or anything like that. But I'm not exactly sure what I'm going to use to actually develop this client.

So guys, what do you think of Silverlight?

So, my mechanical keyboard, as awesome as it may be to type on, is ridiculously loud. Like, it could wake the dead. So I decided it was time to get a new keyboard even though the ABS M1 is pretty much brand new.

Now, I may like a good keyboard as much as the next guy, but I'm not really an enthusiast. I try to spend under $60 or so when buying a new keyboard. So, stretching my budget a little it was either the Lycosa or the G15.

I decided to go for the Lycosa, even though it doesn't have that cool LCD panel, because it simply looks better with the rest of my accessories. Especially now that I'm getting an eXactMat and a DeathAdder for Christmas tomorrow (writing this at 12:17AM Christmas Eve).

Not only that, but I really didn't use the LCD the last time I really had one. Admittedly, I didn't game as much, but even still I can't see the LCD being useful in the games I play, which are all FPSes (TF2, HL2: DM, CS:S, L4D2 (soon)).

So, I got my Lycosa and I get to open it now on Christmas Eve, rather than Christmas day. Bit of a tradition that we do in my family, one or two gifts early. And I have to say I'm pretty impressed.

I got the mirror edition, despite warnings of fingerprints, because it was $5 cheaper and I was already paying a ton for shipping, and I also heard the rubber on the normal one begins to peel off after a while, which would have driven me crazy.

The first thing I have to note is that the keyboard is gorgeous. The glossy finish is simply spectacular. And the back lighting stands out very well for the most part. It's thin and sleek, and fits just fine on my desk.

The second thing is that it's slippery as butter.. I mean, my fingers are sliding around like a greased up deaf guy. Not to the point where it's a problem, it actually feels very smooth, but I haven't tried gaming yet. Sliding off the WSAD cluster might be a problem.

Point numero three-o is that it's a fingerprint magnet. Not so much the keys themselves, but the other glossy surfaces that I think were glossy on the original too. It's noticeable, but it doesn't seem too bad. I'll have to see over time.

And finally, the space bar seems to...squeak a bit. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. It certainly helps distinguishing whether or not you hit it hard enough to prevent typos, but it throws me off a little bit.

Then again, almost every keyboard's space bar that I've used has a little bit of a squeak of sorts. This one is less of a "squeak" like I had on the M1, but rather it's like...the sound of the space bar vibrating a little after popping back up. Annoying but quiet.

And, since I forgot and can't be bothered to change finally to forth, I have a final-final thing. The way it feels to type on. I usually hate standard keyboards, especially after switching to the M1, because I end up making errors and such because they just feel so squishy. The Lycosa is nowhere near as tactile as the M1, but it's better than your average keyboard. I seemed to have transitioned fine in just a few minutes.

Just thought I'd share this with anyone who might be interested in getting a new keyboard, since it is often a bit of a difficult choice if you actually care about how it feels to type or are a gamer, etc.

Merry Christmas (Eve, technically) everyone, and remember...

You just lost The Game.

I'm extremely happy, and extremely angry, at the same time today. Here's why:

I got my HTC Droid Eris! It is simply an amazing phone. I've used my friends iPhones, and I have to say, even if the Eris is slower on paper, it's a better phone overall. Not only do I have Verizon's expansive 3G network, but I also have the ability to multitask, and a UI made of something other than pages of icons. Yay Google/Verizon!

I wasn't able to use my mum's new every two upgrade, and as such the phone cost me $80 with a coupon rather than $50. And since I went to the store to get it, just to check if I could, I have to wait on a rebate to come in the mail so I can get back the other $100 I put down for it. What's even better? The dumbasses at the authorized Verizon reseller I went to gave me a Droid rebate form, valid 10 days ago. Neither really helps.

Moral of the story: Go to an official Verizon retail center, or shop for your phones online. People are stupid.

A few days ago, TomsHardware posted an article defending themselves, stating that they don't get paid by Apple to talk highly of their product, they're not biased towards Apple or anything to that extent. And while that's not entirely believable (the lack of bias that is), it's not as prominent on a certain other tech site. CNET.

So what did CNET do to piss me off today, you may ask? Well of course you are aware, I'm sure, that today is the day that Windows 7 launched. So, CNET decided that they'd post a comparison of Snow Leopard and Windows 7, to compare and contrast Microsoft and Apple's new operating systems. Seems reasonable right?

It would be if it wasn't such a load of shit. First of all, the editor who presents the Prize Fight segment is none other than Brian Tong, who is the single biggest Apple fanboy on the internet, except for maybe AppleSoldier on YouTube. His bias towards Apple is obviously apparent in his ridiculous descriptions of the Zune HD earlier this month.

Here are a few of my select favorite statements from the Prize Fight:

"Snow Leopard comes with more tools out of the box: MS Exchange compatibility, iTunes, iPhoto, Mail, and iMovie. These are high-quality tools, too; if they sucked, Windows would have the edge here."

Last I checked, iMovie and iPhoto are part of iLife. iLife is bundled with new Macs, it's not part of Snow Leopard. Saying Snow Leopard comes out of the box with these tools is as valid as saying Windows comes out of the box with Photoshop. If you buy the OS itself without a computer, these programs obviously aren't included. Because they aren't part of the OS.

"QuickTime has basic editing features now--very nice. The screen-recording app is also good. Safari is a slicker browser than IE. Mail.app is very good, and works with Exchange now. Biggest difference: a Mac can run Windows, via Boot Camp. Your move, Microsoft."

I'm sorry I wasn't aware that it's Microsoft's fault that Apple has made it illegal to run OS X on a standard, non Apple PC. How ridiculous of Microsoft to not infringe upon Apple's EULA. ... And the fact that considering dual booting a feature of an OS is a joke. OS X can't run Windows, your Mac can. OS X just assists you in partitioning your drive.

"Feels snappier than Vista, but in my testing, that might just be due to the Windows 7 installation being newer. Start-up is not even close to as fast I hoped it would be."

Is this a limitation of Windows, or a limitation of your BIOS? CNET found that Windows 7 takes 6 seconds longer to boot than Snow Leopard. How long did it take to go from the BIOS to Windows? EFI based Windows notebooks are coming out as well. It's not Microsoft's fault, it's PC manufacturers.

"I'm awarding Snow Leopard a bonus point, too, since it actually gives you back hard-drive space if you're upgrading from an older OS."

*Cough* Windows 7 doesn't have a smaller footprint than Windows Vista?

"If the price of admission were $129, I'd be giving Snow Leopard a 2 here, but since Apple is letting those who had the previous OS (and secretly Tiger, too) upgrade for just $29, it's a no-brainer. It's got enough little tweaks and improvements to warrant the price tag."

Way to encourage breaking EULAs, CNET! It's obvious that buying an upgrade copy of Snow Leopard and installing it on your Tiger machine doesn't conflict with the fine print, right? It's not like Apple actually released different released for a reason....

"After 10 months playing with the beta, release candidate, and release to manufacturing versions of Windows 7, I've not had one crash or data-loss experience. However, that's not to say it's not possible."
"Snow Leopard's launch hiccups, most notably related to guest account data loss, were quickly fixed. But you can't ignore that they happened."

The above statements both obviously warrant the same score of a 4 in that round from the same reviewer, no? But wait, there's another biased reviewer?

"In my month or so of using the RTM build of Windows 7, it hasn't had a system crash once. Like any other version of Windows though, this varies depending on the third software you're using and what kind of hardware you're running it on."
"I've been using Snow Leopard since it was released, longer than I've been using Windows 7. I've had three crashes, but traced them all to a beta driver for a new gadget I was testing. I still get spinning Beach Balls of Doom, mostly when trying to access networked drives."

When something doesn't work on Windows, it's Microsoft's fault, as we can see from the launch of Vista. But when something doesn't work on your Mac, suddenly it's the fault of a lazy developer.

So honestly, CNET. Get your head out of Apple's ass.
</...

As anyone who bothers to actually read my journals should know by now, I am often highly critical of Apple's products, and how they're often overpriced compared to their competition. For example, the single processor Mac Pro is easily beaten by a cheaper HP workstation, and the 15" MacBook Pro when configured to compete with the new HP Envy 15, is far more expensive.

But, the two products Apple has always gotten right with pricing, whether or not they're products that most people would buy, are the iMac and the Mac Mini. Both received updates yesterday, and they are both looking like fairly attractive options depending on your use of them. The iMacs especially, are dramatically improved, due to two major changes. The first of which is the displays, the second of which, is the internals.

Apple has always used mobile components in their All-in-Ones to keep the power consumption down, and to make it easier to manage heat. However in the latest update, it appears that Apple has actually switched over to using desktop grade components, at least in the form of the Core i5 750, and the Core i7 860. Apple has also raised the bar on its Core 2 Duo based iMacs, to 3.06 Ghz standard.

Now, to be quite honest, I'm shocked. I expected Apple to do away with the Core 2 Duos altogether and switch to the Core i7 720QM, 820QM and 920QM, which would still be a rather strong upgrade in performance compared to the mobile Core 2 Duos, but this just blows them away completely. Not only do the desktop Lynnfield parts have relatively high clock speeds and turbo modes compared to the mobile counterparts, they also of course offer twice the physical cores of the Core 2 Duos. This is going to result in a dramatic difference in performance from the previous generation.

The biggest shock here is that the Quad-Core iMacs are probably going to move on to the single processor Mac Pros territory. With Core i9 and related Xeons not slated for release until late 2010, I have an odd feeling that sales of the $2,500 Mac Pro are going to slow down. The differences between the iMac and Mac Pro are minimal, and pretty much consist solely of the support for ECC RAM. In fact, the iMac starts out with a stronger graphics processor, and may very well perform better than the Mac Pro with the use of Grand Central Dispatch.

Not only is the performance better, but so is the value. As I noted, Apple has also updated the displays of the iMac, and they are even more impressive than before. While they previously used IPS panels in the 24" model that resulted in very good color accuracy, they have gone further and increased the size to 27", and added roughly 77% more pixels overall. Not only is it bigger, but it also has a higher pixel density. And the new backlighting results in it being even more accurate. The 27" iMac just isn't a powerful computer, it's an excellent tool for artists, designers and editors.

The only problem, in my opinion, is that the IPS panels may make these computers too expensive for the average consumer. While it's great that Apple has these, I honestly think the 21.5" model should have used a TN panel. Apple needs to make a more clear distinction between which products are aimed at average consumers, and which are aimed at professionals. The Mac Mini at $800, should really be as powerful as the 21.5" iMac, without the costly display. If Apple is going to offer options such as it for those of us with existing accessories, they shouldn't cut us short on performance.

The iMac is probably the best All-in-One on the market right now. The only reason not to get it, is if you don't need the display, or you require Windows and adding it via BootCamp would exceed your price range, or you don't want to spend money for OS X when you don't want it. I wrote this mostly to show that I don't hate Apple. I think Steve Jobs is a douchebag, and I hate Mac zealots who try to pretend Apple never has problems and try to shove every Apple product down every "PC" user's throat. But Apple as a company has its good products and its bad, and the iMac is definitely a good one.

Earlier today I made a video and posted it on YouTube, comparing the price of Dell's top of the line notebook, the Studio XPS 16, with Apple's 17" MacBook Pro. Despite some differences, such as the screen size, they're relatively similar notebooks and should perform roughly the same.

The Dell has a 16" 1080p RGBLED backlit display. The MacBook Pro, a 17" WUXGA WLED backlit display. The Dell has better color accuracy, and the MacBook has 120 more vertical pixels. The Dell has a 16:9 aspect ratio, the Mac, 16:10. The Dell will display HD content better (no black bars).

The Dell has a Core i7 720QM Quad-Core mobile processor, with a clock speed of 1.6 Ghz, 6MB of cache and it can automagically overclock itself to 2.8 Ghz standard when only two cores are in use. The MacBook Pro, was configured to use a Core 2 Duo T9900, at 3.06 Ghz with 6MB of cache, the closest processor you can get. It's roughly the same in single threaded tests, perhaps marginally faster, but is severely outclassed in multi-threaded ones.

The Dell has a mobility Radeon HD 4670, the MacBook Pro, a GeForce 9600M GT. The first has 1024mb of dedicated RAM, the latter, half that. The Radeon beats out the GeForce in every version of 3DMark excluding 3DMark01.

The Dell has 4GB of DDR3-1333 RAM, the MacBook Pro, 4GB of DDR3-1066.

The Dell and MacBook Pro both have a 500GB 7200RPM HDD.

The Dell is using Vista Ultimate 64-bit, and includes a Windows 7 upgrade. The MacBook Pro, Snow Leopard.

The Dell was configured with Sony Imagination Studio Suite. The MacBook Pro, includes a copy of iLife, like all new Macs. Both can create audio tracks, edit movies, organize photos, you know, that sort of creative stuff.

The Dell was configured with 36 months of anti-virus, since the average user is going to want a commercial product over a free solution to feel safe. The MacBook Pro had no anti-virus software, unless Snow Leopard's malware detection counts.

The Dell included a 9-cell battery, the MacBook Pro of course features a non-removable 8 hour battery* designed by Apple in California.&tm;

The Dell has 3-year of Accidental Damage from Handling protection, in home service and dedicated support. The MacBook Pro had 3 years of AppleCare, which covers ... manufacturing defects.

Both include wireless cards, backlit keyboards, built in bluetooth, and all that fun stuff. Both weighed around 6 and a half pounds.

The Apple cost $3200. The Dell cost $850 less.

Then I received this comment:

One reason I'd spend the 850 more for the mac, Windows Vista. Yes I would pay 850 just for an OS. But better better life, better lighter design, slightly better display, iLife, all applications that are wanted and needed are in the box,Customer service just in case something does happen,more green (environment friendly), highly recyclable. Everyone made by one company, so its made too just work. And a lot more that i dont feel too list. But other than that those are my reasons.

He would pay $850 more for an operating system.

He would pay $850 more for a bigger, less accurate display.

He would pay $850 more, because it's "lighter", when both have the same approximate weight.

He would pay $850 more, because it's more recyclable and green.

He would pay $850 more, because Apple has "customer service". I hope he doesn't crack his display, or spill something on his notebook.

He would pay $850 more, because everything is made by "one company". Not like their processors aren't made by Intel, their boards by Foxconn, their graphics by nVidia, etc.

He would pay $850 more, because of all this bullshit propaganda about how Windows Vista is apparently so terrible.

Windows Vista doesn't delete all your data when you log into a guest account.

Windows Vista doesn't claim to be 64-bit and boot with a 32-bit kernel unless you hold 6 and 4.

Windows Vista doesn't restrict you to running it on hardware sold by a single company alone.

Windows Vista may have had issues when it was first released, but it's absolutely fine now. And Windows 7 is coming out in 4 days. There are 4 days left, where Mac fanboys can whine and complain about how terrible Vista is, because in 4 days, Windows 7 will be Microsoft's latest released operating system.

I'm using Windows 7 right now, the final version. And I've been using the release candidate for months. And you know what?

It's fucking amazing.

I often find myself in Mac vs. Windows PC debates, and when it comes down to the major argument as to why Macs aren't overpriced, the answer usually consists of one or two main points: Snow Leopard is apparently "100 times" better than Windows, and the form factor and neat things like the trackpad determine the price. I instantly throw the first argument out, as I'm very well aware of the fact that OS X is no better than Windows, not that it's any worse, they're on par in my book. But the second always gets me thinking.

"Compared to other OEM's offerings for this type of product, what's the price difference?". And, to be honest...there's no offerings to compare. Most laptops that come close to the MacBook Pro's form factor for example, such as the Inspiron 15z, use CULV processors, and are less powerful, yet less expensive and aimed at different markets. However, then we have HP's new Envy line of computers, that is a MacBook Pro ripoff, and may cost even more from the look of things.

In the case of the Inspiron 15z, it tells me two things. The first is that it's not impossible for other manufacturers to make computers of the same form factor, and keep them at a reasonable budget. The second, is that Apple must have some serious design skills, considering Dell's using ultra-low voltage parts, and Apple can get away with T9650s and discrete graphics in their higher end models. Perhaps the aluminium casing does have some benefits, but does it honestly cost Apple more to use it than say, a plastic case? Of course it does, and it allows them more room due to the unibody. But my question is, how much does it cost them? Are they abusing this premium aspect of their notebooks?

In the case of the latter, I learn three more things. The first is that HP is a bitch, and they're riding off Apple's wave of trendiness and popularity among trendwhores to try to retain their market share while Acer is steadily climbing towards the top. Not that I prefer one over the other, they're both shit companies with shit products. The second is that with the fact that Dell CAN make cheaper "ultra-lights", and that even APPLE is priced lower in this case, it's apparent HP is also overpricing by some degree. And the third, is that if HP can design a laptop like this and make use of mobile i7s even in their 15-inch, so can everyone else.

So the question becomes, why don't they? Why doesn't everyone else make hip and trendy laptops with their sleek metallic bodies and glass trackpads and ultra-super-thinness like Apple? My first thought, and the most likely one, in the case of the metallic bodies, is that people like their colored notebooks and it's easier to color plastic than paint aluminium or magnesium. In the case of the trackpads, well, I don't even know. Some companies are getting better with their trackpads, some not so much. My VAIO FW's is fine, but I've used many a shitty one. Which leaves the last question: why not thin?

And the answer is: it's not practical, for the consumer or for the manufacturer. What the average consumer wants, is something that gets the job done. They're not looking for a premium notebook, with all the bells and whistles, and they probably ooo and aaaah at Macs because they're the main ones they see with them. But they couldn't afford them anyway, nevermind notice PC alternatives. And for those of us who do buy &#039remium', or $1000+ Windows notebooks, we couldn't give a damn about thin-ness. Most of us are either gamers who buy some 2-inch thick monster from Alienware, or just want entertainment computers, and don't mind maybe an extra 1/3rd of an inch of thickness at some point.

At the same time, if companies realize that people don't want this, and that Apple caters to a niche market, why should they manufacture then? They'd not be able to compete well with Apple, they'd get bashed as rip-offs like always, and they'd have to invest R&D in a useless product. I'm just not seeing the point. An Inspiron 15z may have a crap processor, but it gets the job done when you need ultra-portability. And an XPS 16 may be slightly thicker, but it's got more raw power. I personally think, and I think these manufacturers know, that people want ultra-portability or power, not a balance of both.

So, the question becomes less "are Macs overpriced", and more "is it practical to buy a Mac, over a slightly larger PC?", and I think the answer is no personally. But people are free to disagree, and buy what they want. But the fact of the matter is, Apple is a niche market, and they seem to be staying that way

PS. I got a Zune HD yesterday, it's so freaking sexy, small and thin. Such a freaking iPod killer. </hypocrite>What? It's not like...

Often times I find myself in the Mac Forums, or on YouTube or Twitter fighting in these rather silly flame wars, trying to convince users that Macs are really no better than PCs. Now, I have several reasons for that, which I've made known in the past, but, Apple does deserve some credit for plenty of things in the technology industry. And even now Macs have some neat stuff that make them quite attractive to users. However, it's simply my personal opinion that the cons outweigh the benefits. But, nevertheless, here's a few things I actually like about, or give credit to Apple for.

Edit: continued after....5 I think it was? And added some dislikes at Apple and such.

Aluminium Unibody - I'm not saying it's the most attractive case design available for a laptop, people have personal preference which certainly weighs in here, but the MacBook Pros are certainly among some of the thinnest laptops. I don't really know any competing notebooks as thin, most thin and lights aim around the cheaper, $1,000~ market. I still think there might be some issues with heat flow with it's lack of fans, but other than that it's nice, sleek and well, not ugly.

Glass trackpad - Currently, I have a Sony VAIO FW. And it has a rather nice trackpad. Unfortunately, most laptops don't. And one of the only other laptops I've used that does is the MacBook Pro. The glass texture is very smooth, and the lack of two buttons isn't as annoying as one might think, the two finger click is relatively easy to get used to. Personally, I prefer to use my wireless mouse above anything on a laptop, but if one needed to go with a trackpad, the MacBook Pros isn't bad by any means.

Webkit - Whether they developed Webkit over KHTML because they actually embrace open source, or because they were too lazy to write their own rendering engine from scratch, Webkit continues to be an extremely powerful engine behind both Safari and Chrome. The backend of IE obviously isn't as snappy or powerful, and I would always choose a Webkit based browser over it.

Battery Life - Likely because of Apple's tight control over their own hardware, OS X is very well optimized to make the most out of your battery life, and it does so quite well. Of course, then there's the fact that they have those neat battery cells, though making the battery removable would be even neater. In any case, it's clear the MacBook Pros have some of the best battery lives on the market for their performance.

The Personal Computer - Of course, if it wasn't for Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, we wouldn't really have personal computers to begin with. The Apple I was really the first successful computer kit, and the Apple ][ the first successful PC. Woz's incredible engineering skills changed the industry, and that's more than I can say for any other of the big computer industry guys back then.

OS X's UI - Regardless of what I think about OS X itself, I can't argue about the fact that the UI is well, attractive. Innovative features like Expose for finding your documents, and Stacks for making navigation easy, really just beat Windows "equivalents" like 3D Flip and Jump Lists.

Spaces - While I never found virtual desktops to be absolutely necessary, nor did I ever really use them on my Mac, you can't deny that Windows is really the last one out of the three major OSes (OS X, Windows itself and most Linux distros), to not adopt them yet. I actually find myself using them more on Ubuntu than anything else, but Apple definitely has the right idea offering them built in.

Screencasting - Professional software like Camtasia is expensive as hell, and Jing, while free, still has heavy limitations on it. By building screencasting support into QuickTime X, Apple makes it a lot easier for users to make tutorials and such. Considering most of the free software I used under Windows sucked, I have to say Apple has the upper hand on this one.

Xcode - While I absolutely hate Xcode itself, and I also hate Objective-C, Apple making Xcode free to download is probably one of their best possible moves. They probably need to so that they gain more developer support with their smaller market share, but seeing as Visual Studio is quite expensive, unless you use the Express Editions or are a student, I have to say Apple's quite generous here.

So, yeah, Apple's a pretty cool guy. When it comes to these things anyway. But, there's plenty of things I dislike about them too:

Restrictive Platform - Darwin may be open source, but Mac OS X itself is restricted to being installed and running on Apple branded hardware. Compared to the unrestricted licensing of Windows, this is a joke. I know Apple's biggest thing is that...

Again with your fucking bullshit "The bad", that nobody fucking cares about, and aren't really drawbacks to begin with? Oh but, what exactly am I ranting about here?

"You still can't use the Zune with a Mac" - And you couldn't use an iPod with Windows at first! But guess what? No you can! And do you know why? BECAUSE APPLE DOESN'T HAVE ANY FUCKING MARKET SHARE. They needed the 90% of users who run Windows, and they KNEW they had the best product at the time, so they made it work with PCs. HOW WOULD DOING THE OPPOSITE BENEFIT MICROSOFT? They already have access to the HUGE 90% Windows user marketshare, and no fucking Mac fanboys are going to buy a Microsoft Zune, no matter HOW MUCH BETTER it really is.

"Marketplace purchases require "Microsoft Points," - Oh mah fucking gawd, I have to spend a few more seconds more seconds of my precious life converting real money into virtual currency for this store. It's not like I'm going to like, spend it anyway, I'm just converting all my money because that makes sooooo much sense.... Except, this shouldn't really bother an actual person, because you are in fact SPENDING IT ANYWAY.

"video format support is limited" - Like hell it is, it plays more video formats than the fucking iPod Touch, which this thing is a competitor to. Just because it doesn't play Apple's retarded formats, doesn't mean it doesn't have any. If you're going to pull bullshit cons out of your ass, then criticize the iPod Touch for not running .exe's or making you toast. That doesn't make sense? Oh, WELL NEITHER DOES THIS.

"you'll need to purchase a dock accessory for HD video output" - How dare Microsoft try to profit off peripherals for their product! Apple has never once in their life made you purchase additional accessories to output content in different formats, or over different connections! It's not like you need a mini-DisplayPort to DVI/VGA/etc adapter to use your MacBooks with an external monitor! Oh wait, YOU DO. BUT WHY DON'T YOU MENTION THAT ON YOUR REVIEW OF APPLE PRODUCTS?

"application and game selection stinks" - HEY, THE FUCKING APPLICATIONS STORE THAT JUST OPENED DOESN'T HAVE ANY APPS! HOW DARE THEY NOT HAVE A FLOOD OF APPLICATIONS ON THE FIRST DAY! APPLE DID...except they didn't, and neither do most media devices and cell phones. Because things like these need TIME TO DEVELOP. Hell, the PALM PRE STILL DOESN'T HAVE ANY GOOD APPS. But the Zune HD is a fucking MEDIA PLAYER, if you want games and apps, buy a damn Nintendo DS, a device MADE FOR GAMING.

"the recommended music subscription plan puts the real-world cost higher than the iPod" - ... Really? It does? Well, I'm not sure how the FUCK you figure that one, CNET, because the cost of the Zune Pass is only SLIGHTLY HIGHER than 10 DRM free songs out of the iTunes Store, and oh wait, IT COMES WITH 10 DRM FREE SONGS A MONTH. GEE, WILL YOU LOOK AT THAT. So, what am I paying slightly extra for? Well, THREE ZUNES THAT MY FAMILY USES GET UNLIMITED DRM-PROTECTED MUSIC TO LISTEN TO ON THEIR ZUNES. THAT'S WORTH THE FUCKING TWO DOLLARS AND TEN CENTS YOU SPEND EXTRA. $1.29 PER SONG, 10 SONGS, $12.90. $15 PER MONTH FOR A ZUNE PASS. DO THE MATH. AND NOBODY IS FORCING YOU TO USE THE SERVICE.

God damnit CNET, stop being BIASED FUCKERS, admit that for once Microsoft has an EPIC device, and that you're all just butthurt because you have to boot into Windows once in a while now. Are you going to tack the cost of the recommended MobileMe subscription onto your purchase of a Mac, to make it EVEN MORE OVERPRICED? Are you going to tack on the costs of video-out adapters that any normal person fucking needs to use an external monitor? Noooo? THEN FUCK YOU.

</SUPER ANGRY RANT>

TL;DR I'm an angry faggot and Donald Bell of CNET needs to go suck Jobs off.

On a brighter note, Attack of the Show did a nice review of the device.

#TalkRPG! Yes, it's an amazing concept I know, and a radical change from #iRPG, but we've done it. We here at crApple, my personal programming company, has struck on another huge success. #TalkRPG, as you can deduce from the name, is a new channel on the deviantART Messaging Network, and a whole new evolution in the world of gaming.

In #TalkRPG, your score isn't based on how much you idle or remain quiet, no, quite the opposite. The more you talk, the higher your score is. It's really quite brilliant, revolutionary in fact. We struck upon this gold mine idea while re-writing that other silly game that my watchers used to play. But we've completely scrapped that now, no no that game was complete non-sense

You see, the actual formulas for #TalkRPG are based upon the number of words in your message, as well as your "activity level", which is calculated by the number of messages you've sent in the past hour, divided by how many words you've sent that are netspeak. lolz;; ^^ the precise forumla is ...

points = (activity level) * ((number of members) ^ (length of message) / 9001)

This ingenius formula, generated by the handsomest of our team of brilliant programmers, which consists of me, myself and I, assures a plethora of fun gameplay for discussions of all topics! Be warned however, because as the conversation continues the topic of discussion will quickly be compared to nazis, at which point YOU LOSE, GOOD DAY SIR. Enjoy the new game guys!

* The new version of #iRPG has actually been done for a while, we're just hunting around for a new host. Unfortunately LonelyPker's server is quite unreliable if you haven't noticed. This also means we'll probably have to scrap the live scores website. We'll re-implement the $stats command and allow users to access it in a private room, likely #iRPGGuards, to check their stats. We'll also stick a list of the top 100 players in order in the topic with their scores accessible by hovering over them.

** I honestly hope you didn't take this journal seriously.

*** You lost the game.

So I was thinking about posting this for a while now, but I've been putting it off for a few days since I was on vacation and all in New Jersey on the shore. It was nice, but the weather was very humid and the beach was too rough to swim except for one day. Did a bunch of cool shit on the boardwalk though. Where was I again?

Oh right, software, applications, code, you know, things that run on hardware. I want to know what you, all my ... three and a half active watchers run on YOUR machines. :D I ask because I recently got finished (for the most part) installing all my stuff on my new Sony VAIO FW, and I realize I run a lot of useful programs, even if I only use them once in a while.

Most of the software I run is free in some way, either cost wise or open source, with the exception of almost every one of my games. Can't exactly get much quality gaming for $0.00, except OpenArena which is still an awesome FPS. Anyway, on to my list, in absolutely no order.

Steam - The game content distribution manager thingamajig! It's like the iTunes for Windows Games, which makes it absolutely awesome. Why go to the store to pick up a game when you can simply download it, and not be limited by shitty DRM? Well, except for maybe price, I picked up the Orange Box in the store for $10 cheaper than on Steam. But, Steam itself is awesome, in that you can sign on and download and play any of the games you've bought without being nagged for activation and such. You own the games, not your computer.

RocketDock - Although I constantly bash Apple for being overpriced, I can't help but like some of the features of their products. One of these is the dock bar, which I believe was adopted from OPENSTEP which Mac OS X is based off of. RocketDock has to be the single best dock program for Windows I know of. ObjectDock is nice too, but it's too resource-hoggish, like most of Stardock's applications. I like the Dell Dock better (inb4 Stardock makes it, I know), but seeing as I have a Sony laptop, this dock works fine for me. I keep it always on bottom at the top of the screen so when I show the desktop, I can find my programs easily as they're organized.

[sorta] Fences - From Stardock is an AWESOME program for Windows, but I don't run it anymore because like I said, Stardock's programs waste resources and don't have much practical value for me. But, this program allows you to pretty much organize icons on your desktop into like, pseudo-folders so that you can keep things more organized. It's cleaner than a standard desktop, and an alternative to a dock, and better for organizing normal files. Personally, I think Microsoft oughta build something like this right into "Windows 8", or as an addition to Windows 7.

IBM Lotus Symphony - Well, what can I say. It's an amazing office suite based off of OpenOffice.Org, with a much improved user interface, including TABS. Tabs in an Office Program. HOLE-E-SHIT, that's been coming for a long time, hasn't it? I find it extremely useful, not only because I prefer not having 9000 windows open, but it's also way easier to switch between documents. It also supports the Office Open XML standard, so it should be able to read/write the "new" *cough I'm a little late here* .docx Microsoft Office files.

VirtualBox - Why pay for VMWare or Parallels Desktop when you can do the same thing for free? Sun Microsystem's VirtualBox asks the same question, being one of the best free ways to run virtual machines. It has support for integrating Windows and Linux hosts into the parent operating system for a more "seamless" feel, that really does work. It's a PC in a virtual window, what else can you ask for?

Visual Studio 2008 - What? Could this possibly be free as well? Well, Microsoft releases chopped-up watered down versions of Visual Studio for the average Joe getting into programming, and they also give away fully featured and functional copies of it to College AND HIGH SCHOOL students via the DreamSpark program. Pretty sweet deal if you ask me. You can grab XNA Studio for it too, and start developing some epic Zune HD and Xbox 360 games (I know I'm going to).

Expression Studio - Again, this one is also a freebie if you're a High School or College student, and it's got some pretty neat stuff in it to help you work with all your multimedia goodness. I personally only use Expression Web, seeing as I have no use for the rest of it, but it's all good and awesome and it can make pancakes, well maybe not that last part.

[eh] Mozilla FireFox - The world's most expandable, fully featured web browser! Developed by the world's most pathetic company that is quickly losing every ounce of respect I have for them by being whiny bitches to the European Union! Seriously, you don't advertise in the media, you don't sell co...

I got my new laptop, it's badass (way to not correct this sooner). It's a Sony VAIO FW465. They only had it in black and silver at the store, but it still looks great. It's got a 320GB 7200RPM Hard-Drive, 4GB of DDR2-800 RAM, a 2.53Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo P8700, and a 1GB ATi Radeon HD4650. It's a pretty damn good laptop. I got the 2 year Accidental Damage from Handling warranty, so it should last me at least 2 years.

It took a while to start up and it started to worry me, so I opened task manager and ran shutdown -r. Unfortunately it restarted just as Windows finished loading and started up explorer and such. It restarted right away and it running great now. There's a bit of junk software but there's also a lot of useful stuff. Microsoft Works is better than I remember, and can save to .DOCX files.

When I first started it up I think something bugged up with the screen but it fixed itself within a second or so. It was weird, I dunno if I should look into it, or what it could be, but it hasn't happened since and it's fine now. Could have been something with the drivers or something, doubt it was a loose connection to the GPU.

I'd also like to note that the keyboard is REALLY good. It's got those pebble like keys that you find on MacBooks, only I think Sony had them first. It's very comfortable in any case, and the letters on the key are large and each to read. The media keys are really good too, not those weird touch ones. Oh, and the touchpad is very smooth and easy to use, but I use a mouse anyway for gaming.

So all in all, if you're looking for a new laptop, I'd recommend this one. It wasn't too expensive, is very sleek and looks nice, and is pretty powerful. Just thought I'd post my thoughts on it. kbai

I should be getting my new notebook on Monday. I'm usually not a notebook person, but I can't stand using my desktop upstairs anymore, it's too hot with this terrible weather. I'm going on vacation on Thursday too, so it'll be nice to be able to use while I'm away.

I'm getting a Sony VAIO FW, which will probably be better suited for me than my old MacBook. I've been comparing a lot of notebooks lately and this one's probably a bit better than the new, lowest-end 15" MacBook Pro. Only, it's $500 less. I figured I'd post a quick comparison so that anyone else thinking about buying a notebook could profit from my... extensive research on the subject? lol

RAM: Both have 4GB of RAM. The Sony VAIO features DDR2-800 while the MacBook Pro has DDR3-1066. As far as I know, the VAIO's RAM is CL5 and the MacBook's is CL7. Any advantages of the MacBook's above the VAIO's here are very minimal due to the higher latencies for DDR3 memory. Additionally it should be much cheaper for me to upgrade to say, even 8GB in the future should I want to. (it's still a bit expensive right now, less so than DDR3 would be though)

CPU: They also have the same exact CPU, the Intel Core 2 Duo P8700, clocked at 2.53 Ghz with 3MB of L2 cache. Now, I don't know how well this will perform compared to my desktop's Phenom II X3 720, but it should be more than enough for me on the go. In the past I've wasted money on silly upgrades for the smallest bit of clock speed for ridiculous prices, and it's simply not worth it. The P8700 seems to be where the affordable and logical upgrade paths end. Except maybe the cheaper Core 2 Quads in some of HP's notebooks.

HDD: My notebook will actually have a faster and larger hard-drive than the MacBook Pro's, being 320GB and 7200RPM. The MacBook Pro's is 250GB and 5400RPM. So yeah, getting a bit more for...quite a bit less, especially in this department.

Display: Now, I know the display quality probably doesn't really come near Apple's with color accuracy. The only notebook display I know of that comes close to, and even beats theirs, is Dell's Studio XPS 16's. But, it has a larger, 1600x900 resolution which is more important for me.

Optical drive: BLU-RAY, IT'S THE FUTURE! And it's in my notebook. Apple currently has no Blu-Ray options at all, nevermind offering them in their lowest end MacBook Pro. Blu-Ray could come in handy for watching some newer movies. My screen isn't full HD but it's 16:9 in any case. The MacBook Pro's optical drive is also slot loading, so if you're into that kind of gimmicky stuff, maybe you could justify wasting $500.

GPU: My notebook's got a Radeon HD4650 with 1GB of video memory. Now, the last MacBook Pro I used featured an nVidia GeForce 9600M GT. That's not too bad. But then I realized in the lowest-end 15" they dropped the discrete graphics entirely. It now uses the integrated 9400M GT. My laptop's GPU could eat the MacBook's for breakfast. Sad.

Software: This, is where I will not lie. Sony apparently loads up their computers with a bunch of crap bloatware that will probably take a good half hour to remove. But it's well worth it in my opinion. You also get a free Windows 7 upgrade which is quite good, seeing as it improves heavily upon Vista. The MacBook Pro comes with OS X and iLife, and upgrades to iLife are around $79. Windows Live Essentials includes programs to do everything iLife does except GarageBand, for free. Why bother?

So yeah. Apple's are overpriced, MacBooks are a gigantic waste of money. You can get more for less buying from Sony, or even Dell, HP, Acer and Toshiba if you want to look around. Don't buy into the crap advertising.

How anyone, ANYONE, can be as absolutely retarded as this Apple Soldier guy on youtube. I mean like, I think he's a troll or something. Against my better judgment, I decided to look at his other videos. This is what I found. I mean, Jesus Christ. "Hey, the AlienWare is still less expensive so I'ma make up a bunch of bullshit reasons why the Mac is worth more instead". I mean, wow.

What the hell is this guy smoking talking about how OpenGL is better than DirectX, and how Microsoft only uses it to hold a monopoly on games. Sure, it's specific to Microsoft, it can only be used on Windows, but that doesn't make OpenGL better. DirectX isn't just for graphics, that's where Direct3D comes in, DirectX has a shit load of features that make developer's lives easier.

OpenGL is more difficult to develop games of the same quality in. And FYI, OpenGL works fine on a Windows PC too! Developers could use it fine and have their games run on Windows too! They use DirectX because it's better, and it's industry standard. It's not platform specific, and we'll still get a shitton more performance out of the GTX260M than you will out of your piece of shit 9600M GT!

The only points I can possibly see being relevant, are the size, and the battery life, but hey, that's to be expected in a machine of this type. It's more powerful, period, the GPU draws way more energy, and for a good reason. It's a gaming machine. It's not a portable notebook, it's a desktop replacement, it's a gaming machine. It's meant to be plugged in during normal use, and it's not exactly a laptop you're going to carry around everywhere. Buy a damn netbook if you have this much money and you want something ultra-portable. At least if you get mugged, you've lost $300, not $3000.

Does this guy seriously think that these are the kinds of laptops you should be dragging around all over the place, to class and such? They're high performance, desktop replacement machines. Maybe the MacBook Pro's a bit more portable, that's fine, but there's no reason to have a Mac with that much power anyway. What are you going to do, run 20 instances of The Sims while you're walking to your college classes? People who want gaming laptops are the people who go to LAN parties, or want to bring their ability to game with them around the house maybe, or on extended trips.

And what the shit is with him bugging out over the difference in the prices of the processors, when the starting processor on the AlienWare is less expensive than the starting processor in the MacBook?!? Of course there's going to be a damn difference, there's a difference in the upgrade! And he brushes off the difference in RAM prices like it means nothing!

The upgrade is the SAME in this case, but the price difference leads towards Apple! And he bugs out about the cost of a 6GB RAM upgrade too. Guess what? 4GB DDR3 RAM dimms cost $400. That's how much they cost, that's how much manufacturers cost, what do you want Dell to do, undersell them and lose money?

This guy also needs to get his head out of his ass, and stop comparing Apples to AlienWare. Nobody said AlienWare wasn't expensive either. There's no such thing as Mac vs. PC. It's Macs vs. Dell vs. Sony vs. HP vs. Asus vs. Acer vs. MSI.... Mac is a brand of PC, just like everyone else, you can't just selectively choose the most expensive Windows machine to compare it to.

God damn, people are retards.

TL;DR I'm mad that people who use computers are stupid. Especially Macs apparently.

#iRPG
#Botdom
#dAmnU

Lately, for some strange reason, every time I go to look at engadget, or venture into the depths of the dA operating system, hardware and software forums, I want to stab myself in the face. There is just so much crap going on lately, so I thought I'd post all of my opinions here, and post a poll or two to collect some opinions.

Microsoft vs. the European Union

Of all of the garbage I've been hearing lately, this is the worst of it all. The European Union is pretty much forcing Microsoft to include the option for the end user to select a web browser to use during setup. Now, you may be thinking, "Hey! That's great, IE sucks", but God honestly, this is a bad thing.

It's absolutely ridiculous for the European Union to tell Microsoft that it has to include a competitor's (Mozilla, Opera, Apple, Google, etc.) product (FireFox, Opera, Safari, Chrome, etc.) with their own (Internet Explorer) and allow the user to select the competitor's over their own, or that they're not allowed to include a specific component (Internet Explorer) with their own product (Windows 7).

Firstly, why doesn't every web browser ever written get included as an option too then? Why do certain companies get to have their products included in Windows? Why can't I complain to the European Union and say "hey! I want my own web browser that I wrote in about 20 seconds in C# that does absolutely nothing productive included with Windows too!"

It's simply retarded, it obviously favors selective companies that already have a large slice of market share, and furthermore, it's not even like they make a profit off of it, most browsers are free! They don't NEED the users, they're not losing money from NOT having users, and they're not making any attempt to advertise on their own. When's the last time you saw a commercial for FireFox while watching cable?

It may seem like a good thing, and it may seem like it gives the consumer more choice, but this is just another excuse for the EU to fine Microsoft, another thing for Apple, Opera, Google and Mozilla to bitch about for no reason, and another headache for the consumer that doesn't know the difference anyway.

Vista sucks!

Yeah! And so does XP, it's a freaking memory whore! 256 Mb of RAM to run an OS? Ha! Let's all run Windows 2000, it only needed half of that, or even better, Windows 95, it used even less. You know what? GUIs in general use too much resources, let's just use DOS! Eh, you know what? Fuck DOS, let's just go back to typing into a BASIC interpreter, get out your floppies! You know what? Floppies are too unsightly, let's just use paper tapes.

Do you see where I'm going with this? Software and hardware both evolve, you can't simply pick one and not the other, of course you're not going to be able to run Vista on the same machines that ran XP 5 years ago. It has hgiher system requirements for obvious reasons. It makes better use of newer hardware, it has better security, it's more aesthetically appealing, and it has more features.

Stop whining that you can't run it on your Pentium 4s with 256 Mb of RAM, or that your 40GB hard-disk hardly has any room after installing Vista, and do one of two things. Either stick with XP until the computer spontaneously combusts and use obsolete, unsupported, insecure technology, or suck it up and buy a new computer. There are plenty of laptops and desktops at the 300-400 USD range that can run Vista fine, so stop complaining.

Macs are better because ____

I am so sick and tired of Mac zealots going around acting like their all that and a bag of microchips. </bad jokes> But really, Mac users think they have the right to complain about everything and think that everything they do is better because it's on a Mac. Using a machine with a 150% hardware markup because of a silly OS that Apple built off an existing FREE unix-like OS is no reason to think you're God.

Believe me, if Apple has the market share Windows had, there would be plenty of driver issues for all the 3rd party accessories there are for Windows machines now, there would be much more malware targeted at Mac users, and there would be a lot more complaints about crashes, spinning beachballs of death and kernel panics.

Nearly every Mac user I know acts like that stuck up asshole portrayed in the Mac vs. PC commercials, who's actor by the way, is completely computer incompetent, as he himself admitted. They think they have the right to look down on everyone, and make up "facts" to try to prove themselves right. Seriously, Mac users, stop being such dicks.

First of all, yes, the upgrade to Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard is only $29! Wow, what a great deal, except for the users of old PowerPC Macs that won't get any support at all. Yes, I know I said as software advances the hardware must too, but a PC that can run Wi...

"this is bullshit, real bullshit." - Homeless Frank

I know a lot of people have already stated their opinions on this, and I'm really late to the party, but I'd thought I'd just make my opinion on it public. To quote Homeless Frank "this is bullshit, real bullshit."

I don't see why it had to be changed to begin with, which is my main issue here. What was wrong with the way it was before, pretty much "Subscribed" and "Not subscribed"? I know a lot of you will say "Oh, it's no big deal", but if it's not, why did it happen to begin with? Every action, especially changes to this website, has some motivation behind it.

So what was it? Well, in my opinion, it seems like saying "NEEDS" Premium Membership is deviantART's way of playing mind games with us users. It enforces the idea that on a website like this, the Premium features are a necessity, which is obviously not true for a great majority of users. It seems like it's aimed at getting people to feel the need to buy subscriptions for others as gifts, or for themselves.

Now, believe me, I know deviantART is a corporation, and as such, it needs to make money. But I don't understand why they had to do it in this way. A subscription based model seems silly to me. Don't they make enough off of print sales, and advertisements? After all, I've seen a few Scientology ads pop up when I'm not signed in. They've got to be getting some amount of revenue off of that.

It's not even the subscription service itself that irks me, just this new way of advertising it and shoving it down our throats. And they obviously knew it'd have some kind of community reaction, or they wouldn't have changed it to begin with. Like I said, the whole "it's not a big change" argument isn't valid.

Don't get me wrong, deviantART offers a lot of great services for it's non-paying users. It has great portfolios, the forums and chat system, as far as I know there's no limit on storage space for art hosting, and the upcoming groups system looks promising. I just don't want to see deviantART move more towards a "Premium"-centric website where people think they're more important if they pay.

Now, of course that obviously makes sense as deviantART wants people to keep subscribing, so it has to please it's paying members. But as far as I know, from the early days, deviantART has been about "the community", and that should include everyone who uses this site, whether they pay or not, whether they're an anthro artist, a photographer, a writer, or even if they're just here to critique other's work.

In the past few months, I've seen deviantART take a turn for the worse. It seems like the site is more focused around some kind of inner circle of more important seniors and Premium members, and it seems like the Staff doesn't really care about some things the community complains about. If you're not actually going to be for the community, it seems wrong to me to claim you are. Don't try to convince me that volunteers and seniors aren't favored, either, because I've seen clearly that they are.

deviantART may not be in really bad shape right now as far as the difference between non-paying members and subscribers/seniors are concerned, but the gap is certainly growing, and a lot of people are noticing it. And I see a lot of people speaking up against it, and I don't see anyone particularly speaking up...for it.

PS: No, this journal CSS is by `electricnet, but I can't figure out how to go back to using old CSS themes the normal way. So I had to modify one.

#iRPG
#Botdom
#dAmnU

So, today was the big day. The first day of Apple's Worldwide Developer's Conference. So, I thought I'd take some time out of my night to give my 2 cents about all the new announcements, and my opinions on Apple in general.

WWDC Stuff

I'm quite pleased that upgrades to Apple OS X Snow Leopard will be only $29.99, as it will save my wallet some pain when I upgrade.

I'm quite disappointed that the biggest new thing I found people were excited about for the iPhone was copy/cut/paste, and that it somehow mankes the iPhone better than the new Palm Pre. Seriously Apple, background apps please?

Apple slashed the prices on all of it's MacBook Pro's, and the MacBook Air, making them somewhat less overpriced.

Apple thinks adding the word &#039ro' to the end of it's existing 13" MacBook makes it a better product.

Other crap

I still feel that Xcode isn't as friendly an IDE as Visual Studio, especially for interface design.

AppleCare's lack of any real coverage makes me disappointed in the "geniuses" over at Apple. Really, I can get an accident protection plan from Dell/HP so when I spill something on my laptop, I get a new one free. Where's Apple's response to this?

The new MacBooks are still sorta overpriced, and I'd like to see HDMI rather than this "Mini DisplayPort"

Apple still offers no products with AMD processors, only Intel. Please Apple, give us some choice.

Wow, I fucking love Microsoft. No joke, this XNA Game Studio stuff is epic. I just downloaded it and Visual Studio 2008 from DreamSpark (their free software program for students) and I am like, amazed. I never thought it'd be this easy to program games for the Xbox 360 and Windows of this quality, wow.

So, posting a poll, if I end up releasing a game I write using XNA Game Studio for the Xbox 360, will you buy it? Would you tell your friends about it? I'd probably end up pricing it at 200 or 400 M$ points ($2 or $4). Would $4 be too high in your opinion? Let me know.

inb4 reading, this is me whining about my problems. don't read if you don't care. Or just skip to TL;DR

So for the past few months after my dad got his motorcycles, he's had nowhere to keep them so he's renting part of our backyard to store them (they're still on somewhat okay terms). He then took this one step further, and is constantly over at my mother's house working on them as if it's his garage or something, and also now rents our shed to keep his tools in, since he now lives in an apartment.

That pissed me off enough, since he spends more tome at my house with his motorcycles, than he does trying to visit his children, seeing as he's supposed to take us every other weekend, and the piece of shit can't even do that (not that I would go, but he's neglecting the other kids). But, he also props open the gate with a garbage can every time he does so.

My mother has told him several times not to do so. Why? Because we have a dog, that's intended to be a watch dog. It is extremely aggressive and protective of us, and as such, it attacks the neighbors if and when it get's out in the front. On top of that, it's retardedly fast. It can run half the length of my block in about 5 seconds, it is near impossible to catch.

So, when my dog was out in the back today, who decides to come by other than my dad, and what did he do? He left the gate open. Now, this has happened before, so my dog knows "Oh hey! Gate's open!", and runs out. The dog then proceeded to I guess bite at the neighbor or something, and then it runs away. The neighbor, being the genius he is, starts to walk over to my dad to talk to him. Who comes back? The dog of course, so while my dog was biting at his legs for a short time before it ran away, he yelled that we need to get rid of the dog.

Then, my dog, realizing it did something wrong, runs up the the stairs and lies down waiting for someone to let it inside. It happens to be at this very minute that I walk out the door, and what do I see? Well, it was something like a fat asshole grabbing my dog by the back of it's neck lifting it a foot or two into the air while it was crying and yelping.

So, I told my dad to get his fucking hands off my dog, told him he had no place in disciplining MY dog (that is, my mom owns it, I take care of it) and slammed the door in his face. From what I've heard from my sister and mother, prior to this, my mom told him NOT to go after the dog on the steps, and he did anyway, claiming he was disciplining MY dog, and believe me, he hates animals, and he didn't do it to teach her a lesson, he did it because he hates her.

After that, my dad apparently threatened to have me put in a mental institution for talking to him like I did (I seriously don't know how he comes up with these ridiculous ideas....the man is just...not playing with a full deck). So I had a good laugh about that, just like the time he threatened me and said if I ever ended up in jail, he'd shoot anyone who tried to bail me out (once again... why am I ending up in jail? he thinks of the most farfetched situations).

So, this obviously isn't the first time the dog's gotten out, it often runs past people at the front door to escape, and it's always a pain to get her in. In fact, this is the second time this week she's attacked said neighbor. And I know it's wrong of her, and I know she's too violent, but half the times she's gotten out, it's because my dad once again, did not listen to my mother regarding her yard.

So now, my mom is worried, and we're going to have to get rid of the dog. I love the dog, she's a member of my family, more than my fucking faggot father ever was. She always sleeps up in my room, either next to me or on the couch, and listens to me when I need an excuse to claim I'm not just talking to myself. So needless to say, yeah, I'm pretty damn upset. And just in case anybody's wondering, yes it's the dog on my page sitting next to the board game, and her name is Chaser.

<edit> My mom says Chaser has to go within the next day or two ;-; </edit>

TL;DR: I have to get rid of my dog, partly because my dad is a gigantic faggot, once again, another pet lost because of him.

S'up guys. Had an AP Computer Science AB exam on Tuesday. It's been 48-hours, so I'ma blogging my responses. Compare and contrast if you took it. Questions are up on the CollegeBoard website. Made a few errors, not many, thought the test was pretty easy.

#1 - Growing Tree. Pretty simple start to a pretty simple exam. Think this is exactly what I put on the exam. Hopefully I didn't fuck up with the constructors though and try to set the left and rights in them. I think I did it right, though. It was defininitely 6 lines methinks, not 4. growTreeHelper was simple too, needed to do postorder traversal to avoid expanding created nodes.

private static void expandNode(TreeNode t)
{
TreeNode newLeft = new TreeNode(t.getValue());
newLeft.setLeft(t.getLeft());
TreeNode newRight = new TreeNode(t.getValue());
newRight.setRight(t.getRight());

t.setLeft(newLeft);
t.setRight(newRight);

}
private static void growTreeHelper(TreeNode current, Object val)
{
if(current != null)
{
growTreeHelper(current.getLeft(), val);
growTreeHelper(current.getRight(), val);
if(current.getValue().equals(val))
expandNode(current);
}
}

Also, for the Big-O runtimes. O(1) for the first, O(n) for the second. 1st has no iteration, 2nd goes through each element in the tree (n nodes). Moving on...

#2 Historian Critter - Ah, an historian does not make for a good GridWorld Critter. It was almost silly to me really, but oh well, this was a giveaway question. No Big-Os on the runtime or memory, and as long as you know .put() and .get(), you're .set() >_>.

public void makeMove(Location loc)
{
if(loc == null)
removeSelfFromGrid();
else
{
if(!loc.equals(getLocation())){
Integer numVisits = places.get(loc);
if(numVisits == null)
numVisits = new Integer(0);
places.put(loc, new Integer(numVisits.intValue() + 1));
}
setLocation(loc);
}
}
public List<Location> mostPopularPlaces()
{
List<Location> popPlaces = new ArrayList<Location>();
int highestVisits = 0;
for(Location loc : places.keySet())
{
if(places.get(loc) > highestVisits)
{
highestVisits = places.get(loc);
popPlaces = new ArrayList<Location>();
}
if(places.get(loc) == highestVisits)
{
popPlaces.add(loc);
}
}
return popPlaces;
}

Code was similar to above. Places I could have fucked up: iterating through wrong loop (ie. trying to for:each the actual HashMap) and I may have accidentally overwrote a class variable in the popular places method (places, forget what I named the new List), so, shit.

More coming later, cba atm.

So, I'm a bit bored lately and I figured, what's the best cure for boredom than making money and spending it on expensive toys. I've been thinking about how I can make a bit of extra cash, and I realized I have absolutely no talents whatsoever that aren't directly software or hardware related. And since everyone around me sucks and won't buy custom built computers. I have to resort to coding.

After thinking about what I could possibly code, and for who, I decided that the best kind of application to write is a fun one, a game. And what better platform to write a game for...than the iPhone. So, I turned on my MacBook Pro, installed Xcode, grabbed the iPhone SDK and realized...I have absolutely no idea what to write.

So, watchers, any suggestions for an iPhone game that you think may bring in a bit of extra cash for me? I'll probably price it at $0.99 or $1.99, depending on how long it takes to code and how fun it ends up being. I figure it doesn't have to be anything fancy, just something addicting and small like a mini game you'd find in a fully featured console game these days.

Oh, and I had an idea, for like, an emote-based RTS or RPG game, but I don't think it'd work to well on the iPhone, your thoughts?

[Edit: I got rid of my now outdated sidebar "My PC" panel, seeing as it's completely outdated. I forgot to mention that I built a new one. Phenom II X3 720, 4GB DDR3 1333, Sapphire Radeon HD4870, some Gigabyte AM3 motherboard, 640GB HDD, CD/DVD, etc. all inside a nice CoolerMaster HAF 932, yaaaay]

[Edit 2: I got a box of ShamWows today]

What is #iRPG
Fuck the overly long and complicated instructions. #iRPG is a game, more specifically it's played in a channel on the Chat Network. You get points by saying NOTHING while being in the chatroom. You lose points if you leave, speak or are kicked. A kick is equivalent to a 250 character message, leaving to a 20 character one.

Commands
$align - Align yourself to good, neutral and evil. Affects battles and godsends/calamities.
$class - Set your "character class". Used in your welcome to the room.

Events
Godsends and Calamities - God will perform these at random intervals, bestowing you with points or taking them from you based on your alignment and a game of chance. The probability of either affecting you is low, and they will carry you 5-12% away or towards a level.

Battles - Each time you level after level 25, and sometimes before it, you will engage in a battle with another user, as well as gaining an item. If you are of proper alignment, you may steal an item from a defeated foe, or have an advantage against them in the battle.
