The piece in focus today is: Nelson Mandela 18 July Resilience

The main theme of this piece is resilience. It was made as a tribute to Nelson Mandela and to mark his birthday on the 18 July 2012.

The piece focuses on his 27 years in jail, and the turmoil in South Africa during that time, half of his face contains the Hector Pieterson image, which became one of the primary visual representations of the student uprising during apartheid.

It made me ponder the age old question:

Is there a difference between being a religious person and a spiritual person?

For some, the spiritual experience is totally removed from traditional religious theory. Its a communication with one's senses in one way or another - it can be natural or paranormal or totally devoid of any feeling or sentiment.

For others, religious theory is very much interconnected with their personal spiritual experiences.

And a comment on the piece, really tickled my imagination and resulted in a creativity burst in my mind.

The viewer commented: "it's coca cola doing the splits".

And when viewed in a surrealistic, abstract context; the elements next to the coca-cola can,  extend themselves to a point where they look like they are part of the can - so it really does seem as if the Coca-Cola can is doing the splits.

This creativity burst spawned a whole new surreal, abstract Coca-Cola art series which can be viewed in its entirety on my Flickr photostream.

The traditional idea of love - is very reminiscent of St Valentine's story.  An unwavering emotion, a deep connection and link to another person that is steady and all consuming, and filled with warmth and intensity.

Its a new year and I've decided not to make New Year's resolutions in the traditional way, instead I've resolved to do something I usually do -  in a different way.

So for example if I open GIMP and usually only use one type of gradient setting, this year I'm trying other settings, and experimenting with new filter parameters.

So if I add all the little changes up by the end of 2012 -  I will still be the same person fundamentally but the cumulative effect of these changes would have resulted in the same person with a different outlook, perspective and pattern of life.

Its more of a fever with me, my Christmas fever - it starts off slowly with me fighting it all the way, then Christmas Eve hits and I reach fever pitch and anything sparkly, with red and green trimmings finds itself in my shopping cart.

As for the presentation I got a little bit of stage fright but it still went fairly well since they did ask how I made the graphics,  they loved the graphics so I got to speak about GIMP and all the plugins and GMIC especially which was strange - speaking about GIMP at Microsoft Developer Idols, albeit unintentionally.

It was very interesting hearing from Microsoft South Africa and some of the Microsoft Developers from Redmond and attending all the talks.
