I thought I'd summarize what crap I've enjoyed the most during this year. The things in this list doesn't have to be this year's releases, more like what I've read/seen/listened/played even though they might've been out for a decade.

Videogames:

Machinarium - Now I'm a fan of old click adventure games and not that much of games where there's more brain puzzle sort of problems to solve, but I have to say Machinarium surprised me in that department. It's more about solving puzzles than combining items with different stuff, but how they pulled it off with the audiovisual department is simply stunning. The mood is top notch and how they represent the story with no dialog is a great accomplishment. My biggest whine would be the part where you have to beat a robot in tic-tac-toe with 5 in a row.

Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn & Throne of Bhaal - There's a game I thought I'd never be able to finish as it requires too much work to learn the magic system and get comfortable to cope with the many pages of spell icons you have to go through. To my luck I had the pleasure of finishing the whole game in multiplayer with a friend who knew that aspect of the game like his own pockets. Even though I mainly focused on just whacking stuff dead (yeah, I played a barbarian) and not that much paying attention to the plot, the story of the game unweiled itself to be something that's actually pretty damn good. We had great fun with this game and it goes in the list of top games I've ever played.

Dragon Age: Origins - I'd put it like this, it's like Baldur's Gate 2 that I can actually beat without help. Maybe not as epic and hardcore, but it's overall a really enjoyable experience to me. The game offers good value to your used moolah with it's length. I've put 43 hours on it now and I still haven't beat it. I like how they've polished the rough edges in the UI department that usually lacks in rpgs. I'll complain about the downloadable content they push to the player though. I bought the warden's keep upgrade and I felt kinda like being ripped off. New armor set yeah, 2 new skills ok, the place itself was pretty cool... but I felt like they could've just packaged this with some more content or just give it free as an update. Still, great game.

Movies:

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou - One of the funniest yet touching movies I've seen this year. I'm pretty amazed how hardly anybody even knows about this movie. Bill Murray is slowly becoming my favorite actor since I tend to like a lot of movies where he is in. All the animals in this movie are made with stopmotion and it gives it a pretty nice style.

The Watchmen - I went to see this for the first time with just the right kind of people who enjoyed the same aspects of the movie as I did. We had a blast. Eventually I went to see it a total of three times in the theaters. Once more with my brother and the third time was with one friend of mine. I have read the comicbook a bit, but it doesn't have as much appeal to me as the movie adaptation. I might get crucified, but I'd say it's a good adaptation of the comic. It has the keyscenes in it and there's good thought put into the overall spirit to stay faitful to the original. JUST MY OPINION, MAN!

Rocky 1-6 - Well, I had never seen any Rocky movies, so I decided to uhm, "buy" them, which I eventually did though. The first and the third movie are my favorite, the fourth is still good, but the fifth is just bad. The sixth (Rocky Balboa) fixes the gap a bit that the fifth tore open, but not as good as the first 4 ones. Good movies, some parts good in a corny sense though.

City of God - I'm amazed I haven't seen this earlier. Good movie based on true events. Man, I'm not even sure how to describe it properly... Just see it for yourself, that shoud be enough.

Comics:

All the stuff the norwegian cartoonist Jason has done - I recently decided to buy as much of his work as I can and it didn't let me down. Sure his stories are pretty similiar, but I don't mind. His style is so nice and clean and he is one of those masters who can whip up comics with no dialog that are still rich with story. Some of his work is pretty hard to find though, maybe some day I can get rest of it.

The Horde, Baranko - A comic that sets in place in NeoMoscow where the current insane dictator (he has legalized all drugs and made the tyrants of the soviet ages saints) wants to resurrect the spirit of Tsingis Khan, the mongolian warlord. It has a lot of style, humor and very pleasing characters to a person like me. My favorite was this bald, mustached psychic officer who had gained his talent after being exposed to the radiation in chernobyl. I found this comic by semi-accident while on a trip to Stockholm.

Ontot Kukkulat, Petri Hiltunen - I'm a big fan of all sorts of trolls and the finnish comic artist Petri Hilt...

I'm pretty much only writing these journal posts for myself. It's like keeping a diary or something and I don't really expect many people to read these.

In any case, my summer is over now. I got to say that I've found something new about myself and how I think about the world around me. A week after my school ended I just thought to myself: "Fuck it, I got no job or anything I have to do - I might as well start doing some physical exercise and not just sit on my arse the whole summer". I started to go out to jog almost daily and I'm still at it. Well I got to say that I haven't achieved much in that matter, only my legs are a wee bit stronger for sure.

What I discovered was the world around me. Every day just going outside and seeing what it is there made me think about things... What it means to be a finn for me? What I want from my life? I thought over my entire lifespan. What has gone and what is still to come. I've found a lot of new about myself.

This summer has gone in a blink of an eye. Weird because I haven't done anything that special. Saw some friends every now and then or just played Warhammer Online. Didn't get that comic done I talked about before the summer started or got the webpages up for my graduation comic. My summer has a deadline and it's pretty safe to say it's pretty much over now. Next monday I am to go perform my civic duties as every finnish male has to serve in the army for at least 6 months after they've turned 18. I'm a spineless wank, so I am performing that as civilian services so I don't have to go there. Instead I'll be locked up a year as a graphical designer in a culture house in Kannelmäki. Could prove useful as a working experience.

In the end I'll leave myself a video that sums it pretty well how I currently feel [link]

Until next time I want to write to myself.

Matias.

I was unable to get a job for the summer, so it looks like I have nothing to do the next couple of months. I was hoping to get my old Mordheim miniature project up and running once again.
Yeah, haven't had any activity here (other than commenting) for a bit, so I thought I'd give some info what's up with me lately. My diploma work comic is on the way, I got myself a grip on it now even though I changed the script. I've been doing my school's job practise period for the finnish comic center as of january, but unfortunately my time is starting to run out and I'll be back on the benches of school in mere few weeks. There's still light at the end of the tunnel as I can do my civil services for the comic center. So I get additional 9 months to spend here, oh glee!

I agreed to go to sweden with the rest of the people here next month even though the dates collide with school. Only for 3 days, so I doubt that causes any problems. As I've understood, our mission is to meet up with some swedish comic people and hone our relationship with them and check out this and that in there. Yeah, diplomancy trip.

Lately I've been reading a shitload of comics, mostly finnish ones. Not long ago I read a comic book per day on the bus ride to work for about 3 weeks. As of my own comic, it's going to be a short zombie apocalypse novel and it will be hosted on the web if there's demand or purpose.

After I'm done with that, I was thinking to publish a small comic booklet with mah friend if we can get some groove under it. I want to create something that I can show around to people so they can see what I and tumoas can do. I like his style and I think it would go really swell with what I had in mind for the booklet.

Expect new shit in here once I'm finished with my comic.

Anyway, over and out!

Nobody is forcing me to update in the first place.

Anyway, my job practice started last saturday at the finnish comic association. Speaking of which, my own comic has not really made any progress, but that's ok. At least I've refined the script even more in my head and I'm starting to itch to start drawing it.

I watched the first Teenage Mutant Turtles movie two days ago.
I ordered my Chrono Trigger DS from Hong Kong yesterday. The US version of it. The reason behind this is that I don't want to wait to next year to play it and since some games get stuck in censorship/translation for europe, so who knows when it might come out over here. Chrono Trigger is the only asian rpg I can play and not get frustrated. I've never liked any Final Fantasy. I tend to hate them actually. Their characters always seem to be emotionally depressed insecure people who only dress themselves with belts and zippers. Then there's random battles, those really get me down and bored in no time at all. Many people usually tell me how the story is what is all about, but in my opinion that is no excuse for bad gameplay.

I got a intern place at the Finnish Comic Association, yay. That'll be interesting. My Mordheim project is still alive and going. Lately I've been going through my mind about constructing a gameboard and terrain. I'd need to find some of this blue/pink styrofoam, it doesn't crumble when cut like normal styrofoam. That's the perfect material to build the base out of. It's not going to be easy, as they're big boards and I need to sculpt some cobblestone texture over both of them so they'll look like the streets of old cities.

[link] Here's that work I did a few days ago.
Yeah, I've got the miniature fever again. Must paint, must play!
I feel like taking a break from this schoolwork for a moment, so I guess I could write about my orc & goblin warband I'm working on. Got all the models ready to the point that I'd just need to paint them.

Well anyway, at first my plans were to do a warband of just goblins, but I scrapped the list about a week ago and started all over. There was still some things that needed to be changed and some stuff I wanted to keep. My old list was 4 heroes, 5 goblins and 4 squigs. I just felt: "Screw da runts, trust da boyz", so I decided to go with more orcs. The munchkin warband list would've been to maximize the amount of orcs, giving them just axes and daggers and trust their toughness value of 4 to do the trick. I'm not that much of a munchkin, so I decided to balance the strength of orcs with some goblins and squigs. Here's the main ideas behind my list:

- All 4 heroes at the beginning
- All orcs (except the shaman) equipped with sword & axe (simply to benefit from the sword's parry rule and the armor reduction of the axe). The more hits, the better.
- I expect my goblins to die, so I only give them short bows (and one squig prodder). They're useless gits anyway.
- Squigs. Yeah, squigs are not that useful as orcs, but damn, they're way too cool to be left on the shelf.

My new list has 4 orc heroes, 2 orc warriors, 4 goblin warriors and 3 squigs. Once we start to play and gain some gold, I'm sure to add more boyz and give me heroes some armor. If we can ever play long enough, I'll definately add a troll at some point ( I even have it ready and painted) Orcs are not that powerful in certain aspects, but they're the ultimate "lose with style" warband to play. It's just hilarious what can happen with them, maybe their animosity kicks in and they kill each other at some point. After the match I might roll that good rolls that all of my goblins would become heroes, but that means they get killed instantly and removed from the game as the orcs don't like loud gobbos. They are easily the most entertaining warband to play and that suits me well.

As for my opponents, I'm against a reiklander mercenary warband with just 4 models, one armed with the very frightening Hochland longrifle, but they're easy as pie as they have to rout after I kill just one of them. You can only fire the rifle once in two turns, so it's not that dire, I just have to take cover and focus on getting down the weakest models. My other opponent is a skaven warband, which is a real threat to me. My friend is a semi-munchkin, so he has a lot of slings and skaven armed with just a dagger and such. I recently heard that because skaven had a lot of imbalance issues, it was one of the reasons why Mordheim was taken out of production.

Right, that's about it. Remember that there's always going to be fighting when playing with greenskins, either with the enemy or amongst your own ranks and that's the way the lads like it.

I was really looking forward to this day, I really was. Four weeks I counted how many days there was left to this day, it felt like an eternity, like waiting for Santa as a little kid. That kinda let's you down after waiting a total of 1,5 years for this game.

Everything seemed perfect, today I had a day off, had the time and the money for it. I sometimes remembered with sheer joy that there was only 3 weeks and 6 days to go. Now, I feel like taking out my radioactive harpoon and go bonkers on EA. Even though Mythic was in charge of this game, EA was in charge for the distribution. Their reputation as an evil empire is well deserved, those crazy cunts. Hopefully I'm able to get my hands on WAR inside a week. Just wishful thinking.

Awww fuck it.

EDIT:

Disregard that, I suck cocks!
So yeah... summer. I just felt like writing here what I've been doing so far.

Well the dominant time consumer has been work. Hardly had any spare time. I've been cleaning planes at the airport of Helsinki-Vantaa, which means picking out the trash & little presents (vomit, used snuff etc.) that the passengers have left for us. Really busy work, with very minimal breaks. On some days I really feel like just throwing in the towel and walking out from that company, but sometimes I have good days as well. The company I'm working for has a lot of flaws in working methods, organizing shifts and keeping the working spirit up. Some of the problems I don't mind as the company is really new here in Finland and some really wear me off.

Tuska was last friday - sunday. I had fun, as usual. Even though the amount of bands I was really looking forward to was as small as 2 (Tyr and Korpiklaani and Korpiklaani cancelled). I was really delighted by two bands I had never heard before: Kypck and Noxa. Kypck does Russian themed doom metal, really downtempo, I mean really. Their guitarist had a very cool guitar, which you can see here -> [link] Noxa is a grindcore band from Indonesia. When was the last time you heard of an indonesian metal band? It made me happy how surprised they seemed from the warm welcome the crowd gave them.

At the moment I have been really inspired by the lyrics of Finntroll so I have this great urge to draw some trolls, but I just don't have the time or will to do so. Somehow my fondess of their music has become sort of a curse to me in some aspects, for every band I go see, I just wish more and more that I'd see Finntroll perform again.

I also have this concept of a troll videogame locked in my mind. It would be an rpg game where you control a troll. You pillage christians, burn down churches (heh, I guess the religious nuts would raise some uproar thanks to that) and eat the corpses of your fallen comrades and enemies. I'd want a very personal visual style in dark pastel shades, possibly even a style done in semi-2D. Open world like in Fallout & Baldur's Gate. Deep caves, dark forests and plenty of christian villages to loot.

I was thinking that every stat would modify your troll's appearance. Charisma would grow your horns and increasing the amount of trolls you can command. Intelligence would increase the length of your hair and on high numbers it would slowly make them grey. Strength would obviously increase your physical bulk. Then you could take any number of traits, as long as you take as much flaws (debuff traits) which also modify the appearance. For instance you pick two traits (like tough skin and heavy handed), so you'd have to pick two flaws from the list as well (like blind eye and slow wits).

I should write some of the ideas down, but I'm a lazy hobo. Pardon me if there's any typos, it just happens to be friggin' 3 am.

I'm working on a troll illustration that I'm sure to add here when it's done (schoolwork). I need to get a job, which is not anything new, but I'm sure as hell that I don't want a similiar summer than last year. That means sitting home for two months doing nothing and not talking to anybody. The only way to avoid this is to get a job. I'm a lazy fucktard who sometimes can't get a grip and just do things, but I'm pretty sure I'm not the only person like that on this planet.

WAR is still coming. I've got over the peak of my hype and I'm being very cautious what to expect from that game. I recently read some article where a game critic wrote about his first impressions of the game after playing it at some gameshow. All he could tell is that it has good pvp and interesting characters, which alone is all I need to be entertained.

TF2 rocks, play it. Tekkon Kinkreet rocks, watch it. Finntroll has some good albums, listen to them. I wish I had money.

Yours truly

It has just come to my attention that Warhammer Online will have a roleplaying server (similiar to the RP servers of WoW). To some this doesn't mean anything, but to me this is great news. I can make more fun out of a game where I act and play as the character I'm controlling, which in this case will be a "Dead 'ard Black Orc".

I've collected miniatures since the age of nine and the race above else I like is Orcs & Goblins. This chance to roleplay as a one has given me countless ideas and I'm planning things I'll do even when the game is still months away. During my last days of WoW, I was planning to form a guild of my own, but I got bored to the game before that could happen. I think I'm going to form a RP Orc Clan of my own. It will be called something like: "Gutgrabba'z Waaaagh" or "Gork'z Skullsmashaz". I have already planned a couple of ideas it will most likely have.

First of all it is supposed to be an orc clan, but that does NOT mean that I will not take other races in it. The leader will be either me or some other Black Orc, since Black Orcs are the natural born leaders of the orc society.

The second in charge is either a Goblin Shaman or a Chaos Magus, the advisor of the Big Boss. The advisor is somewhat the brains of the whole clan, as often orcs are controlled by people who give them ideas they find worthy. Goblins may not be big, but they are cunning and they certainly know how to manipulate their bigger cousins. Chaos Magus are clever enough to trick even the wisest and strongest orc with minimal effort, so they also fit the role perfectly. If I feel like it, I might roll Goblin shaman as my character instead and pass the role of the boss to some other Black Orc.

Then comes the elite troops, they consist of players who have proven themselves to Da Boss. I was thinking of trying to focus on the PvP aspect of the game, so that's a good way to prove yourself worthy. Race and class is no objection to be high in value in the eyes of the boss.

Then comes the soul of every army/warband - "Da Boyz". This consists of any classes and races who are willing to join the Waaaaagh! I'm expecting to see some people who are fun to play with and know at least the basics of roleplaying. Orcs & Goblins are of course the primary troops, but I know that not all players prefer the greenskin, so I'm accepting any other race. Chaos and Dark Elves are not really part of the Waaaagh roleplay-wise, instead they are allies, but they are still equal members with everybody else and will be treated with respect.

The focus will be the PvP, but I don't know what the PvE will be like in WAR, so it's still in as a possibility. Over anything else, it is supposed to be a fun guild to be in. You don't have to do anything special when you enjoy the company. Of course if I feel like it doesn't work, then I can always disband the guild.

I went back to play WoW again... Yay! There are pretty much two types of players in WoW. There are those who spend all their friggin time doing instances and raids for like 5 hours just that some druid they hate gets some epic boots. That's really not my cup of tea. PvP, that's right! It's pretty much the only reason to play the game. It's simply such a good system so it's really enjoyable.

300 is a movie worth watching (also the comic is really great). I recommend it to all those who love strong contrasting colors and violence. Reminded me of God of War. Mmm... God of War <3

I've pretty much uploaded typical black & white drawings lately. I hate people who just jam only one type of a style and can't draw anything else, so I promise that I will upload something better in the near future.

Well well I broke the first milestone of 100 pageviews, but I don't really care. Some people in here just live for those precious pageviews, but what for? I really don't see the point in all that "pageview farming".

I'm currently working on a few pictures that I'll post here in a month at least. I'm itching to draw Raziel from Legacy of Kain after seeing some great fan art here in DA. I'm going to do some original drawings that are based on my own characters. Also I might whip up a katamari picture since I need to do one for a schoolwork.

Eve online is something I started to play again and this time I'm going to pay a month of it. Also I've had the sudden urge to play the Legacy of Kain series. First I installed the first Soul Reaver, but it didn't work on my computer (I even tried one patch that was made by the fan community). So then I got myself LoK: Defience and finished it yesterday. The characters were really cool and fun to play with, but the overall game was between weak/fair. The story was solid as in every LoK. It seems they had decided to make the game more action oriented than puzzle oriented. I'll try Blood Omen 2 someday soon.

Well the Eve servers are back soon.

Third picture finished. Whippee~

It took me nearly the whole day, I started it after school and just finished it few minutes ago. It's funny when you think of it. Time certainly flies while drawing or doing something creative. Of course it doesn't always, it mostly happens when you create something that you like / like to do. Creating stuff is something I just love. It pleases me greatly to tinker with my hands, which gives me a result of something that I like. As I have mentioned earlier, I'm a miniature game player. That includes putting the little buggers together (I prefer to add some cool conversions also), painting them, playing the games and of course making scenery (which is relevant to my topic in this entry).

I love doing miniature terrain. It's so satisfying that you can create absolutely awesome buildings, temples, shrines, fountains, hills, trees etc. from absolute scrap and litter! Old cereal packages can become heretic churches, empty can of baked beans can become a really realistic scifi fuel tank... The possibilities are just endless. If you have an eye for such, some skills and imagination, you can create so great pieces of terrain that'll just ease your eye when you look at them.

There's just something so charming in it. Playing god in your very own room. Creating things from literally out of nothing. Then think about the pleasure of playing a miniature game with miniatures YOU have built and painted and you play on terrain that YOU have built with your very own hands.

Even if you're not into the idea of gaming with small plastic men, you can still do terrain. There's nothing childish or pansy in it. You could use miniature terrain to decorate your shelves or even to a more practical use (for example: you could create like a fantasy tower that can hold your pens inside it).

I recommend it. Now then, I'm off to bed.

...

~aaand I'm still not angry, the gif is just so cool.
