My previous journal got part of the way through the summer & since then I have been to the Big Chill festival where I saw (amongst others) Lenard Cohen & Bill Bailey & generally had a fantastic time & recommend it to anyone & everyone.

Then most of August was grey & dull & I got a little addicted to the BBC iPlayer which was rather unhealthy, I haven't quite weened myself off it yet but I can slightly control the amount of stuff I watch on it.

College has now started & so that has the potential to take up some time along with the Frank Zappa covers / tribute band I play in.

So, you may have gathered that I have been away, in which case you get full marks for your reading & information gathering skills, I did intend to write something along the lines of "I'm going away & I'll be back pretty soon", but didn't get a chance. Thursday the 3rd of July - Thursday the 10th I was camping with a load of other home-educated people (there a big group of us & we all go camping once a year) which was fun, especially when one of my friends trod in the fire bucket

Then from the evening of the 10th until the morning of the 14th I have been at Drum Camp, mostly playing snare drum in the samba workshops which I highly recommend to anyone as it's really good fun.

I have since got back to 105 Deviations & about 20 messages which took me a while to get through but I have done it so if you've posted something over the last couple of weeks I should have seen it.

I'm now suitably tired as last Friday, Saturday & Yesterday night I went to bed at around 5 am, good times, although I'm sure my sleeping patterns aren't thinking the same thing...

Hope all is well with whomever you are that is reading this, I did take photos & some of the more arty ones will probably be uploaded here at some point or another & given pretentious names

From my understanding it was allowing dA to use my work for whatever they liked without my consent & also to let 3rd parties use my work without consent & without royalty payments. It's not the money that bothers me so much as the fact that my work could end up on some horrible advert that I in no way endorse & I wouldn't get any say in the matter. I admit that the likelihood of this happening is small but that really isn't the point as far as I'm concerned.

Right, now to come to the more interesting (for me anyway) side of this piece of text. Music.

For Christmas I got Imogen Heaps ([link]) Latest album Speak for Yourself. It's great. Simple as that, I can't get enough of it, I've been listening to little else on my music player of choice (Foobar2000 [link]) at least I had until today, when I went into Norwich & spent a little bit on money & £15 of vouchers on D'Angelo's album Voodoo & Punk Jazz: The Jaco Pastorius Anthology. To make this easier for me to write & you to read I'll talk about each in the order that I mentioned them in.

Imogen Heap - Speak For Yourself

As you may have guessed, I rather like this album, I first found out about Imogen through a youtube video a mate linked me to & I've been hooked ever since. Her album was one on my "To Get" list & my sister got it for me for Christmas, which was a nice surprise. Right, that's enough history & blabber, now for the music, which is really, REALLY, REALLY good. Often deceptively simple & subtle with really nice electronic parts interweaving with the vocals. Lyrically things are very interesting, I'm not a huge lyricist anyway (see the Funky Monkey for proof) some lyrics I understand, others I don't but that doesn't bother me as there's way more to this than just what she's saying. I couldn't choose a favourite track, there's far too many to choose from. My advice is get the album & listen to it, it's great

D'Angelo - Voodoo

I wasn't totally sure what to expect from this. What I did get was some pretty chilled out hip-hop & laid back soul grooves. D'Angelo is one talented bastard, he's a great singer, rapper, piano / keys player & guitarist. To the best of my knowledge he wrote everything himself & this is another good album, not quite as good a the one above but still worth the amount of currency I paid for it.

Punk Jazz: The Jaco Pastorius Anthology

I already have a soft spot for this man, he's one of the greatest bass players to have lived. This album is two CD's worth of extortionately great music, some of his stuff with Weather Report, some stuff with Pat Metheny, some with the Jaco Pastorius Big Band & some fantastic stuff with Joni Mitchell, plus loads more. This is another highly recommended purchase, it's far too good to pass up.
