Wow, dA really liked this photo! I bought an adCast with the image in it, and all 500 clicks sold in like four days...

First I have to say thanks! I'm flattered that the photo is that good. I thought it would take me for-EVER to get to 500 clicks...

Secondly, I have to mention that if you really liked any of the nature / landscape photos in my gallery, you can have one for free! All you have to do is refer a bride and groom in my direction, and when they book, you get a free mounted, matted print, even a panorama if you want. I can go up to 30" with most of my work, too!

I really recommend getting nature photography prints through me anyway, because to be honest i hate to mount rolled up, (tubed) curly prints. It always results in a couple of creases or wrinkles in the print, no matter how careful you are.

Personally what I do is order my prints from a high-end lab, (WHCC) and have them mounted in the lab and shipped to me flat, ready to mat and frame...

Anyway, take care all!

In fact, my regular backing up of images to DVD has been delayed a month because I have so many photos from last month that I never even looked at. I've uploaded three of them today, and I'll try and upload some more when I find time.

Right now I am cutting mat and mounting pictures like a madman, in an attempt to get ready for an Earth Day event, of which you can get details here: [link] It should be a really cool event because the whole "Camp" area is themed for the outdoors and nature, making it the perfect place for an Earth Day event. Of course, hopefully I'll sell a few photos!

I'll have numerous 5x7", 8x10", and 10x15" prints for sale, and MAYBE a 12x36" print of my panorama that will be entered in Londonxpress' PANO CONTEST here: [link]

The prints are a collection of all my best nature work, including photos such as:

I'd better get back to cutting mat now, I have less than 72 hours left!

Take care,

Listening to: pandora.com

I just realized that I've got a "gift" from the IRS coming my way, as soon as I file my taxes. I love being in the sub-$10,000 per year tax bracket!

This year I should have enough for a 17mm f/3.5 Tokina ATX PRO, the world's widest angle 35mm prime lens that accepts front filters; it's a legend and a bargain offering sharpness on par with today's greatest $1000 lenses, but a price tag of about $250... And since it's a prime, hyperfocal markings! Yaay! Now all I need is a dang expensive 77mm SLIM circular polarizer, drat...

[edit] Nevermind! I filed today- An earth-shattering $30 is headed my way. Yay... It's a good thing I already charged the Tokina purchase though, cause otherwise I would have missed a great bargain. But I hate being in debt! Stupid IRS, taking my money!
[/edit]

I've re-organized my main website: [link] Matthewsaville.com is about to NOT be owned by me anymore, because the ISP I bought the domain from originally wanted $4 per year and now wants $40 per year. LOL talk about a price hike! No thanks...

But I digress. I have re-organized the website to showcase my best work more, especially my wedding / portrait photography, with less emphasis on the older photos that have been sitting there for 2 years... You will now notice that there are only 4 categories instead of 6, and my Wedding - Portrait - Events category takes 2nd place instead of last place.

You guessed it: I am trying to push my wedding / portrait photography a little harder this coming spring and summer in an attempt to make some money so I can get myself out of this deplorable lens situation. (I have the 24mm end of my broken zoom, and my Sigma 150mm, and that's ALL. Though maybe the Tokina 17mm soon...) And as a shameless self-promotion, here are some of my portraits, engagement and/or wedding photos that you may never have seen before:
Didn't know I coud do THAT and do nature too, eh?

But anyways, back to nature, which is what I love and what I'm best at...

I've been taking photos to enter in the PANORAMA CONTEST hosted by Londonxpress. Here are some concepts I've captured in 2-image stitches, as "sketches" for the bigger 5-image stitches I would capture for the contest:
There is one "secret weapon" concept I am working on, but it is not turning out as impressive as I originally planned due to the visual unbelievability of 12+ stops of dynamic range being seamlessly merged, even though our human eyes do it all the time. A shame! But I shall not give up. The weather has continued to be fantastic here in Southern California, meaning there are clouds in the sky and frequent rain showers which "ruin" most people's days but add spectacularity to the magic hours of sunrise and sunset.

For your viewing pleasure, here are some other recent sunrise / sunset photos that I'll try and submit sometime:

At any rate, I'd better hit the books. Finals are in a week!

Take care and happy trails,

Listening to: Jack FM

While I don't fully agree with some of the things that the very talented photographer George Lepp does or says, he said something funny in the new March issue of Outdoor Photograhper along the lines of "A bird in the hand is ...a great macro opportunity!" I thought it was funny, but my sense of humor is pretty limited / easily satisfied...

Since I mentioned that I don't fully agree with George, and will probably never find the opportunity to bring it up again: What I don't agree with are his dealings with Canon and the somewhat two-sidedness of the messages he sends out. Of course I understand that when he does an ad for Canon they are paying him to promote Canon products, but his words give the cliche impression that "Canon is the ONLY way to go" or "ONLY a Canon camera could have captured these photos". In particular the Canon pro DSLR brochure (yes, I have one, I love ALL cameras and don't discriminate or think any one system is paramount over the others) he showcases a fisheye image taken with a Full Frame DSLR. First, he states that ONLY his FF camera could have captured this view, which is not true because Kodak makes a Nikon mount FF DSLR, and furthermore Nikon / Olympus BOTH make DX-taylored fisheye lenses. Secondly, the image he showcases is an HDR image that encompases a fantastic ammount of dynamic range, with beautiful detail in the highlights and shadows. He demonstrated the creation of this specific HDR image in OP magazine some months ago, giving samples of the original photos with, of course, blown highlights / black shadows. Yet nowhere in the ad does Canon disclose that it's a "computer generated" image; even though it is TRUE to the human vision it is not something that ANY camera can yet capture.

However I do wholly respect George Lepp and what he does for the photographic community in his OP columns, and I hold his images in high regard; many of them are simply fantastic and stunning and I gather much inspiration from his work... If however I find myself in his shoes some day, I aspire to discnern between what kinds of advertising I agree with, and what kind I think isn't fair to the consumer...

Now, since I've mentioned that the latest issue of OP magazine has arrived to me, and I'm sure oodles of other publications are in people's mail or "hitting the shelves", I must say a (customary by now) word concerning the latest, hottest camera, the Nikon D200. If you will notice there are two main, entirely legitimate online retail companies, Adorama and B&H which advertise in most all (US) photo magazines. There are also many others, and admittedly I'm sure that some of them are legitimate as well. However, WATCH OUT for the "Brooklyn scam group", in phone area code 718, (don't be fooled by their 800 number, hunt down a local area code!) who consistently advertise the latest, hottest cameras at an incredible discount to rip off mostly new, first-time buyers. I noticed that the D200 is going for about $1350 or so with the scamp group, which is $350 below the MSRP of $1699. So I must warn everyone not to fall for that price! Here are a few pointers:

~ Members of the Brooklyn scam group include, but are not limited to: digitalliquidators, J&K camera, A&M photo world, BestPriceCameras, etc. etc. This is probably less than half of the company fascades...

~ Always check RESELLERRATINGS.COM for reviews of any and every online store you are about to make a&nbspurchase from. You will discover very quickly which companies are legit and which ones are not.

~ If it's "too late" and you've already placed an order, you'll know for sure if you've got the scam group if they email you with a request that you call in and confirm your order. When you call, the salesperson will hit you hard with a load of nonsense that basically means they've taken almost EVERYTHING out of the "standard shipment" box, for example the charger and the rechargeable battery and most importantly the warranty, which they will then procede to coax you into adding on for an obscene price hike, putting you hundreds or thousands of dollars above what a legit company would have charged you for the same package. Combat this by FORCEFULLY canceling your order, or insiting that you don't want ANY accessories. They'll either hang up on you or tell you that they just found out the camera is on backorder and they'll let you know when it gets in... Of cousre you'll never hear from them again, but just to be safe watch your bank account to see if they try to pull any tricks... Call your bank / credit card immediately if you feel you've been victimized.

~ If you've already ordered, got coaxed...

Pay thousands to have your boobs made un-humanly perfect because you're insecure about your oh-so-fleeting physical appearance, or have your stomach surgically flattened because your'e too lazy to get in shape. Or coat your lungs with crap and then throw your butts out the window of your SUV while driving like a courtesy-less maniac eager to pay $3.00 a gallon. Hell, you can't even throw your butts in the ashtray when it's right F-ing there in front of you so you toss them on the ground on your way to class. I swear there must be 10 pounds of butts right next to that trash can outside my engineering class...
Is it just me, or is the entire non-3rd-world human existence upside down? And I'm not innocent, I'm training to be an engineer so I can inadvertently help corporations dump more crap into the landfills / rivers / oceans / atmosphere. And the aspiration and possibility of becoming a "green engineer" and helping the world become a better place is swirling in the toilet thanks to our politicians.
It's bad enough that I own a camera mass-produced by some poor kid in a foreign country, but at least I don't buy an F-ing Lexus for a valentine's day present with the mindsent that "if I take care of the luxuries, the necessities will follow"...
I went back ASAP and bought EVERY SINGLE ROLL of Agfa they have left; I will cry when this film is gone... I love the stuff, it is ALIVE with perfect color.

Film convinces me, each time I shoot it, that it's not the camera that matters. There's some sort of connection between the photographer and the subject that must spark a magic moment that becomes the image. Otherwise, all the digital OR film equipment in the world will not produce an effective, meaningful image.

To me my images are, foremost, proof that God exists, for how could such beauty come out of chaos when every law of physics points towards disorder? Secondly, my macro images in specific are dear to me because they are an escape from suburbia. When I look through my viewfinder at a composition such as the ones above, I am transported to the wilds of some jungle in Madagascar or New Zealand. I may be a "big picture" kind of person in my daily life, perpetually absent-minded, but nature and the outdoors bring me some kind of clarity; details just beg to be paid attention...

Whatever art you enjoy or practice, it should always mean something to you. Never sell your soul to an art by engaging it merely to impress or get rich/famous. None of that matters in the end. Do something that expresses your inner consiousness, do something that means something to YOU.

Take care,
For those of you who don't know anything about old cameras, it's a classic from the 70's / 80's. If it's anything close to the excellent condition it's alleged to be in, it's an absolute steal at that price. So, happy early birthday to me! Even reputable websites under a "Non-Disclosure Agreement" acknowledged that today would be "the big day..." Needless to say, a lot of bandwidth has been consumed today as well as in the past few days, what with "spy" photos etc. etc.

At any rate, here is a quick look at the OFFICIAL D200:

~10.2 megapixel CCD (3872 x 2592 image size)
~11 area AF with 7 "wide" areas
~5 FPS, 22 consecutive NEF's, 37 JPG's (but not "high speed crop mode")
~Magnesium alloy body, professional weather sealing
~Shutter 30 sec - 1/8000 sec, 1/250 Xsync,
~ISO 100-1600 + 3200 "boost" (FINALLY!)
~AI les compatibility (oldschool, manual lenses)
~Viewfinder mag. 0.94x, 95% coverage (goodbye, dark cave of a D70 viewfinder!!!)
~Kelvin available WB (FINALLY!)
~Vertical grip: accessory, with GPS and WiFi possible!
~Weight: 1.8 lbs

~PRICE: $1,845 (This must be Nikon's MSRP, apparently. Adorama lists it at $1,699 as was predicted.)

Ouch on the price, but I sure would like to own one. It's only a few wedding shoots away!

Take care all,
And I hope that the people who ordered prints of "Isolation" enjoy them...

However, just recently my computer went down and I had to format the hard drive. All my photos are backed up on CD / DVD, but I'm basically out of comission because I'm holding off on re-loading all my photos and re-installing Photoshop until my copy of CS2 arrives from Amazon.com Yes ladies and gentlemen, HDR here I come! At any rate, in the meantime please visit my main website [link] and enjoy the photos there. I should be back in early/mid September...

I am amazed at the ammount of control that just came to my fingertips... Adobe Bridge, Adobe Camera RAW, and Photoshop CS2- this is the workflow of my dreams. The enjoyment and control in this new, comprehensive workflow is reminiscent of slides on a light table and a good scanner, seriously. So much "before the fact" control equates to far less "after the fact" editing and doctoring. I hate "editing / doctoring", trust me.

> Full Size <

Allow me to explain the subtle beauty of the above screenshot:

~KELVIN temperature slider. (Do you have any idea how desparately I've wanted this?)
~Specifying image SIZE and resolution. (YES, I'm interpolating to 11.8 megapixels AUTOMATICALLY. And, there are two larger sizes, too!)
~RAW sharpening, plus exposure, shadows, brightness, contrast, and saturation adjustment. I almost don't need to do anything else after I'm done playing with the "digital negative"... (oh and see those other tabs? I can correct lens flaws such as distortion, PERSPECTIVE, chromatic fringing, etc. etc...)

And, since I'm such a fanatic for multiple frame stitching, last but not least, my personal favorite:
~Editing multiple RAW images at the same time. (Yes, I fine-tune one shot and all the others get fine tuned.)

On top of that, CS2 has "Distort > Warp" finally, which makes panorama creation much easier. And, what I bought CS2 for: High Dynamic Range 32 bits-per-channel! ...Imagine what it'll be like for dynamic range not to be an issue anymore!?! Wow....

Thank you, all you new subscribers and all you old friends, for waiting so patiently. I hope you enjoy my new work. Now if you'll excuse me, I'll start uploading!
Between Vancouver city and Vancouver Island, you'll find the Strait of Georgia wherein lay dozens of islands, large and small. Texada and Squitty island are larger islands that have regular ferry service, roads, cars, and cities. Some of the smaller islands however can be very miniscule. Rabbit Island is relatively miniscule, with only one main hall, dock and a few cabins all connected via a very handy boardwalk. You can walk all the way around Rabbit Island in 30-45 minutes, or if you have strong ankles it's possible to jog around in about 10 minutes. Nobody permanently resides on Rabbit Island, but a caretaker and a cook frequent and maintain it.

7.)
(Apparently, a deer or two live somewhere on Rabbit. Nobody has ever seen where they go, though, and we are almost inclined to believe that they swim from island to island at low tide!)

8.)
(The Strait of Georgia DOES experience incredible tide movement;
literally a 10-15+ foot rise and fall occurs twice througout the day...)

9.)
(The boardwalk "runs aground" at low tide, a few yards of it hit the rocks and stay
all crooked like this for hours. Imagine traversing t...
