Last weekend we lost one of the great artists that helped shape the star wars universe. Ralph McQuarries work was an inspiration to countless artists, fans, and general population. He , as well as other great artists, worked for years developing the iconic imagery that lives on in all our imaginations. He will live forever through his work, and the legacy of all the entertainment projects he worked on (especially star wars, but he worked on so many movies and shows its ridiculous how far his artistic reach was).

RIP Ralph McQuarrie (1929-2012)

This is very unfortunate but Insomniac Games lost one of our own this past weekend. Insomniac has temporarily replaced their website with a memorial site , and donation link to the Michael Kuehl Memorial Fund. He was part of our programming team and will be greatly missed. All proceeds go to his wife and family.

The issue here is that this person went to the extent of actually photo-shopping the name onto the artwork that was created by other great artists. I think its clear this is a fake name too, but it hurts any artists up and coming who have the same name. Its also just gross.

I've been playing through Resistance 3 (we got copies on friday) and I have to say it is awesome. I've also been hammering away on the MP Beta which is also awesome. Very excited for R3 to finally be coming out (Tuesday!).

I'll post again when the game is out so i can speak more freely, but yeah, 3 years of development, this will be the first game I've seen go from a scribble of an idea in pre production to full blown game. I'll say its probably one of the best, crafted games Insomniac has made. You can see the 3 years paid off.

I will be at Comicon... but no where specific. I am going to check out everything I can, and maybe take a nap in Hall H! I will be floating around for the 4 days of the event and also partying. Lots of that.

Happy Holidays! No matter what you're celebrating, I hope you have time off from work!!

Everything is good here, I traveled home for a week, back to work in 2010! When I do, I will have officially worked at Insomniac for a year! Thats the best Christmas/birthday Gift ever!

Having said that my parents got me a medium sized Intuous 4, and thats a pretty swell gift I must say. Its small enough to fit in my backpack, so mobile studio here we come!

Looks like after about 5 years I have 50,000 page views. Thank you guys! I have yet to delete anything in my gallery, so you can go back to the stuff i submitted when i started on here, its still around. Though as embarrassing as some of it is, it really shows the progression and evolutions i have gone through.

Now that that is done with, brief update on other fronts.

So ratchet and clank has now been out for over a month in the US. So far so good, though its clearly no Modern Warfare 2, haha, it still has enough following to help keep it moving. So now here it, the time has come, Ratchet once again returns to the PS3!!! This is the first game in the industry I've been a part of, really the first anything I've been a part of worth mentioning! haha!

So go forth, buy it, play it love it, unlock the secret concept art galleries and see a couple of the things I did!! Though mostly the art by the rest of the team is worth checking out, we had some amazing artists work on it, and their concepts weren't always able to make it into the final game. So I have gotten a few questions recently in regards to what I do at Insomniac Games.

  Though I am a concept artist, more specifically I mostly do environmental design. This consists of mostly production drawings that supports the environment modeling team. So if there is a request for something like 'box', i take a peak at the description, then design a box that fits that. Though thats a simple example, it is pretty much how it works.

  The tricky part is that there is rarely painting, its mostly focused on design through drawing. At a certain point in the production, the only thing they need or want is drawings. Sorry I haven't posted anything new in quite a while, we've been busy, working working working!!! Some of you know I work at Insomniac games, and we have been HARD at work making the next game in the R&C franchise. This is only half advertising, I'm actually excited about the game (and the art that is going into it)! haha!

My old site is now Bleh because of my all my new work. Ive been doing so much the older stuff gets more and more suck by the week. haha. An artist friend at Skywalker Ranch told me that more, newer, better stuff you do, the more you hate your older stuff. He was totally right. Thats important though, so you don't stay attached to things that are old, and can hold you back (that's a metaphor for things in life i think).

Also I went to Siggraph, it was sweet. Was personally introduced to Doug Chiang, Got a surprise interview with the art director for Force Unleashed, got a pass to the Lucasfilm VIP screening before a pre-releash screening of clone wars, met the VP of Lucasfilm (who wont remember due to the free cocktails) , Won a free copy of WoW and expansion with other stuff (which i will never play) , and unrelated to that i was invited by a new friend at Blizzard to visit the studio in Irvine. There's a lot more thats happend, but thats the highlights.

So i think its apparent there has been a jump in quality over the past month or so. This is from spending alot of time focusing on developing my work, mostly giving up everything else besides eating and sleeping.
