Hallo!

I am participating in a photography contest. I can submit up to 5 pictures. They will look for the single best photo, so I have 5 chances, so to speak. The pictures have to be taken in Portugal.

Will you please help me decide which pictures to submit?

The pictures are spread out over several journal entries of which you can find a list here:

Today was graduation day. I have my BSc degree now. I'm happy. After graduation we went out for dinner and I had the most delicious chocolate pie I've ever had.

Past week was fairly busy. On Tuesday I went out for dinner at an Indian restaurant with Niki. We spent a lot of time talking; it was very pleasant. On Wednesday I saw Miami Vice with Shamni, after which we cooked vegetable wraps. On Thursday I went to Amsterdam with my parents and sister, where I bought a game called Pylos which turns out to be very fun and challenging. On Friday I went to Joachim's (a friend from CGU) and played Quoridor and Pylos.

Tomorrow I'm probably going to work -- haven't done that in over a month now. This Wednesday morning I'm seeing Nynke, another CGU friend, then I'm going to give uni a quick visit to make some photocopies of a book, and then in the afternoon I'm seeing Joris, a former colleague.

So basically I'm just seeing a lot of people before I'm leaving. Portugal is getting closer and closer. The flight has already been booked; I'm leaving on Sept 9th. I've bought my own set of awesome black-and-white plates and cutlery.

I also bought two Symphony X albums in the past few weeks: I bought the self-titled album on the market in Lorgues back in France, while I picked up The Divine Wings Of Tragedy last Saturday in Utrecht. The latter I like a lot more than the former; the former is really old and has a different singer than Russell Allen, although it's very fun to hear the differences between Masquerade on that album and Masquerade '98 on the newest album.

That's pretty much it for now. Take care.

Hello.

Le Thoronet — We're going on vacation tonight! We're leaving at 4 AM. We're going to stay in a house near Le Thoronet, just like last year, only for four weeks instead of three. We're leaving so early because we're going to drive the 1200 kilometres in one day, so we'll arrive in time for dinner. I will try to check email, mudmail, dA notes, text messages and voicemail at least once a week.

Sleeve — I've bought a beautiful sleeve for my MacBook (Tucano, black/grey), to protect it. Too bad they didn't have any earlier — it's already got a lot of small scratches on it.

Bachelors — I think I've taken care of most things to be able to get my Bachelors degree in August: I've filed the request forms, taken care of my portfolio and got the grade for my software project course. The only thing left to do is write this paper.

Conscious software — Yes, I still have to write a paper, for my Philosophy of Computer Science course. It will be about whether it's possible to create software that has consciousness. Your thoughts and suggestions about this are much appreciated.

Portugal — I also think I've taken care of most things to be able to go to Portugal after the Summer: sent the application forms to Portugal, requested permission from the examencommissie and applied for the Erasmus scholarship.

Take care, everyone.
I'm very happy with it. It runs crisp and smoothly, has a beautiful display and a keyboard that feels nice. And I have a webcam now!

Roger Waters — Last Saturday I saw Pink Floyd's Roger Waters live at the Arrow Rock Festival in Lichtenvoorde. Although I'm not as big a fan as my parents are, it was impressive and a great night nonetheless. It was on a big meadow (how Dutch), and the parking place was one big meadow as well, with only two exits. It took us 1.5 hours to get out of there once the concert was over, and I wasn't in bed until 4 am.

Wisdom teeth — On the memorable day of June 1 2006 my two right wisdom teeth were extracted. I was nervous and — in retrospect — with a good reason. It was highly unpleasant. However, I only took painkillers the same night. The pain was as good as gone the next day, and it healed very fast.

Contacts — I finally got contacts. Getting them on my eyes is very easy now, but taking them out still takes a few tries.

Cheetah — Cheetah is the name of the software project I'm in at university. Together with Philosophy of Computer Science, it's the last course for the year, and also for my Bachelors. We're building an application for people with diabetes. Mainly it's an electronic version of the logbook people with diabetes keep, but with the ability to have the application give them advice on how much food to eat, or how much insulin to inject.

Fractals — I've been working on a small program that draws Fractals. The substitution kind described in a book called A New Kind Of Science by Stephen Wolfram: you start with one basic shape (like a square), and at each step, all individual shapes are replaced with two or more smaller, similar shapes, rotated or translated. It makes for pretty pictures.

It's happened a few times now that people think some of the photos I publish are manipulated or 'fake'. This is what my photography teacher said about my latest picture, Jellyfish:

"This picture is a manipulation of at least 4 parts/photos/images, and I don't feel any life in it. The picture is dead. (...) I think it was completely made in Photoshop. (...) Even a real photograph of concrete has more life in it than any digitally manipulated picure."

Perhaps I should take this as a compliment, that even a professional photographer thinks this picture is fake, but really I'm just annoyed.

Eolynne tells you: it's like when i was a kid, i'd write stories and my teacher always said i copied them out of a book.

If you're interested, another picture taken at around the same time can be found here. It shows the same droplet hanging from the fence, including the light pattern, but from a different angle, and not upside down.

Alright, enough venting. It's almost Christmas!
Life is busy, busy, busy! Current projects:

Multimedia This course is taking quite some time. Two assignments done (portfolio, photoshop), one more to go (flash animation -- I'll probably submit it here when it's done). One test done, one more to go, in the Jaarbeurs Hal of all places. That's a __huge__ hall completely outside the university's grounds.

Overdragen. Another time-consuming course. Fortunately I've already done all three presentations and the newspaper article (on randomness). Only one more article to go (on dynamic programming) -- typeset in LaTeX!

Statistics. Fortunately no assignments for this. Just a lot of math. Things are getting rather vague now that we're discussing guessing and guessers. I don't see why we have to assume the unknown parameter theta has a prior distribution; it makes no sense. Ah well. One test done, one more to go.

Photography. And of course there's the weekly photography lesson. It's very interesting; I'm learning a lot, even though the teacher doesn't teach very well. Oh, actually, I should be careful saying that... cos I gave him the URL to my gallery. Hrm. Wonder if he reads this. Anyways, we get an assignment each week, and it's fun.

Sweden?!? Then there's the programming contests. Team Koeienmelk, consisting of Olivier, Jelmer and I, made it through the local round in Utrecht (UKP) and also through the national round in Delft (NKP -- pictures available at [link]), which means we're going to Sweden for the European round! Yay! We have to pay everything ourselves, though. That is... there's a chance the CS faculty will reimburse our flights, but it's not sure yet. Hrm.

Springs. I'm working on a small applet which models little balls with springs in between. You drag the balls and the connected balls will follow. It's working pretty nicely already; you can add friction and gravity. Still need to work on the trampoline, but the physics and math behind that one are kinda complicated.

Birthday. And of course it's my birthday tomorrow! Yay! Hopefully it'll be fun.

So, as you can see, busy, busy, busy! But so far things are going fine. Getting good grades, having fun, so I'm content.

Still, only six hours of sleep before such an event is not pleasant. We had five hours to solve eight problems. Five long, tiring hours. We managed to solve only one, and two other ones almost... but of course, almost solving a problem doesn't earn you any points. We ended up being #4 out of eight, which might be good enough to get through to the next round. The people organising it weren't sure yet.

We were done at a little past six. I had a party that night, but I had to get something to eat first. Fortunately, Joachim invited me to have dinner at his place; very friendly of him. I'm not used to this kind of hospitality, to be honest. Then Joachim and I went to the train station to meet another friend and go to the party together. It was very nice; I was able to see two people I hadn't seen in two years.

Overall a very nice but long and tiring day. I hope you're all doing well.

Uni has fully begun again. I'm doing statistics, multimedia and a course called 'Overdragen van de Informatica' for which I can't think of a proper translation. Statistics is okay; very mathy but I don't mind. Multimedia is a piece of cake so far; for example, the first assignment is to make a small website, and the second one is to manipulate a picture in a very simple way. Overdragen is mainly about communicational skills; we have to do three presentations (two of which I have to do *this* week *shudders*), write a newspaper article and a bigger paper. Lots and lots of work.

Last Wednesday we had a LAN party at work. That was fun; I'd never been to one before. We played Quake III Arena and had pizza in the office. Then Thursday we (the small company I work for) went out for dinner in Bussum. Great fun.

October 1st I'm participating in the UKP with two friends; the first round of an international coding competition. I wonder how that'll turn out.

October 15th I'm going to see Epica together with some friends from school and work. We're gonna get something to eat in café De Poort before. Really looking forward to that.

I seem to be getting sick. Caught a cold, I think. I slept well though, last night, so I'm feeling fairly okay at the moment. Let's hope it doesn't get much worse.
I hope you're all doing well. Take care.

Well, as you've probably noticed already, I'm back from France. Already posted some pictures; there will be more. I'm not sure yet which ones I like best, so for those people who've seen the pictures: your input is very welcome.

Been busy with work last week. I promised my boss I'd work at least four days a week, for four weeks (last week + 3 upcoming). Things have been going fairly well; let's hope they continue to.

Been to Summer Darkness last Saturday and Sunday. Summer Darkness is a gothic/metal music festival in Utrecht, the biggest in the Netherlands as far as I know. It was great but also very tiring.

Saturday, I saw Nemesea, whom I had seen before in W2, Den Bosch, when Tristania played. Then Gefjon played in the Nicolai church. Personally I think they should be very careful with playing music for a festival like this in churches... but this was okay, I guess. Gefjon is band from Frankfurt, Germany. I believe they were called 'neo-celtic'... four people playing the bagpipes, flutes, guitars, tambourine and harp. Not all at the same time, of course... they switched instruments several times. And the singer was a tall, lean, bald German in a kilt/skirt/apron kind of... thing. It was actually very nice; the church's acoustics enhanced the sound. Then Gothminister from Norway... an entirely different kind of music. White-painted faces with black painted visor-like things across their eyes. The singer was wearing a white shirt, black pants, a large black robe, white face, large black hat, huge finger-covering rings and black gloves with bones painted white on the palms. Oh, and he was holding this skeletal staff with a skull as knob. There was a ladder in the center of the stage which he climbed during the concert, to make him look even more imposing. Which worked, I suppose. The music was actually pretty nice; kind of a raw, industrial sound with lotsa rhythm. Then dinner in a cafe at Ledig Erf, very close to where I used to go to school. Tasty. Then the last band for that night... Sonata Arctica . I'd been looking forward to that so much. It was great. I still had some time before my dad picked me up, so I saw the last twenty minutes or so of Diary of Dreams. Good performance, but I didn't like the music much. Since there were three venues and I had been walking from one to another, I was a very tired... muscles ached, feet ached, back ached, so I was happy when I got home.

Sunday started with a few small bands: Black Tongue Tribe, Dragonfly, Crystal Entity. Then we walked from Ekko to Tivoli (two of the three venues) to see Morning, Autumn and Asrai. I liked Morning best; very good voice, swinging performance, nice synth sounds. Then a small dinner at McDonald's, that is, after I had a found a properly working ATM, which took at least half an hour. Then back to Tivoli for the final and main act... Therion. If I had known the music better and my feet hadn't hurt so much, I would've liked them a lot better. Still, now I can say "I've seen Therion!" and speak the truth at the same time, which is worth something, I think.

Other concerts planned include Epica, Hammerfall, Stratovarius and maybe Opeth. Looking forward already.

So today I have the day off. Hopefully I'll finish my Adventure Editor, add this Export to HTML functionality so I can put my adventure online. That would be nice. And now it's time for breakfast. Goodday, everyone.

I bought three CDs this afternoon: Epica, Sonata Arctica and Roland Orzabal's latest (the latter being a pressie for my dad's birthday). My name actually appears in the thank you list of Epica's album cos I spell checked their lyrics. Thanks to Chris for the help on that.

Also bought Fire Emblem (an RPG for the GameBoy Advance) and Myst IV: Revelations a while back. Both are great fun.

Esther (my sister) is in the middle of her exams. Good luck, Es.

Just great. I got a 1 (the lowest grade you can get) for my last 3D assignment, because Elise didn't hand in the rendered movie. I've put so much time in that course, and this is what I get. Officially, I'm supposed to fail the course for 'lack of effort', but they're 'willing to make an exception' by giving me a 1. Which means I'll barely pass the course. So all's not for nothing, fortunately, but still, I could've passed the course with an 8, easily. All the hours I've put into it... just because of a stupid, unwilling, uncaring partner for one of four assignments. Grrrr.

Some sunnier stuff. Tomorrow I'm going to a symposium about digital entertainment, together with Roland, in Leiden. There'll be an American speaker, and a Japanese one (some stuff on robots), among others. It should be fun.

Dawn (a Mexican friend) said she might be coming to Germany for an exchange project, which I'm really excited about. It'd be great if I could meet her, even if it means a few hours' train trip to and from Germany. She's not sure it will actually happen; I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

The new term is actually a lot easier/less time-consuming than the last one, as I hoped it would be. I'm doing correctness of programs (involving a lot of logic ) and expert systems (we have a great teacher for that -- see [link] -- look at his pic and you'll know what I mean ). I only have classes three days of the week, which means I can finally work again. My boss is getting married this Friday (with Andi, an American girl), and later this month they'll be going to the US for their honeymoon.

Next Wednesday I'll meet Joachim (a friend from my previous school). I challenged him to a game of chess. He usually wins; I wonder what'll happen this time. Looking forward to it.

Phew, longest journal entry to date, I think. I hope you're all doing well. Have fun.

Aahh... my ears are still ringing. My body's sore; legs and back hurt. But, it was fun. Nemesea's singer was a pretty girl with very very long, curly red hair and an impressive, strong voice. Tristania was... not as I expected/hoped it would be. The guitars drowned out the melody; it was mostly beats. Bummer.

Halfway through the concert a girl in the audience fainted; a couple of minutes later she was taken away by an ambulance. No idea how she's doing now.

Another week of school coming up; my first 3D assignment's due Friday and I haven't even started yet. *sigh*

So, it's Monday again. Second week in the new term, so it's safe to post my new class schedule:

Monday 13-15
Tuesday 11-15
Wednesday 13-15
Thursday 13-15
Friday 9-13

Doing 3D Modelling (yay! expect some deviations from assignments for this course), Search Algorithms (gotta love em), and assisting first year students with their Java projects (fun fun fun). Schedule sucks cos I got class every day. Last term was a lot better: longer days, but at least I had two days off. Times suck too cos 14-15 (8 - 9 am for you Mariettans) is just the best time to be on, which I can only do on Friday now.

Been to Nightwish last Friday which was totally awesome. Good show, lotsa fireworks, very impressive. After Forever (support act) was really good, too. Imperia (another support act)... not really worth mentioning.

Going to Tristania (another metal band) next Sunday. Really looking forward to that too, though I'll be glad when I can cut my nails after that (they're long and black atm).

Take care.

It's funny how things that happen in real life can change the meaning of years-old lyrics. I was going to put some of those lyrics here, but I don't think it's a good idea. It would make the happy sad, and the sad even sadder. That is, if they understood the lyrics, and I think the sad are more likely to understand.

This morning I read an article about aleph-0. Aleph-0 is the number of elements in the set of natural numbers N = {0, 1, 2, 3, ...}. Aleph-1 is the number of elements in the set of real numbers R, which includes decimal numbers, pi, e, square roots and all other sorts of muck. George Cantor, a mathematician, tried to prove that there is no beta such that aleph-0 < beta < aleph-1, but he failed. In the 1930s Kurt Gödel proved that Cantor's hypothesis cannot be proven false within the set theory, and in the 1960s Paul Cohen proved that the hypothesis cannot be proved true either. We will never know.

I wonder if crying for someone else makes a difference for the other person. Can you cry someone else's tears? You might say you can't, but you can't prove that. I rarely cry, so a little extra crying won't kill me. And if it might ease someone else's pain, then why not? Can you cry someone else's tears? We will never know.

Going to Amsterdam today to see a friend. We're probably going to eat some Italian food, then go to the Tuschinski theatre to see The Terminal. Should be fun.

Have a good day.

Yesterday was a long day. University from 9 to 17. First my two-hour test, which went quite well, fortunately. Then two hours of lecture on game design, which is -- not so fortunately -- quite boring. All we get is lists, sublists and subsublists. "Let's discuss game balance. There's player-player balance, player-gameplay, and gameplay-gameplay. With gameplay-gameplay it's about challenges. There are different kinds of challenges. There's..." and so on and so on. Then four hours of distributed computing, which is quite fun, mostly because of the teacher.

Then off to Nieuwegein (that's a city) for a lecture about Agile programming. That was interesting. One of the things they said was: if you're developing a program, when do you want to find bugs? Answer: as early as possible, of course. Then why is testing always the last part of the development process? Good point. Anyways, I wasn't home until 22:30. Then I took some pictures of the moon. It was a full moon, and the clouds were illuminated very nicely. I haven't looked at the pictures yet, but if I find one I like enough, I'll put it up here.

Today I have the day off. That means I have the whole day to prepare for tomorrow's test. Yay.
