Well, yes, but the problem is that while I am flexible enough to not really need it, I'm not the most foresight capable.
So my friend has recently gotten a Macbook Pro, and he's giddy and trippy about it all. So I'm sitting there, looking at him fool around on it, before he tells me, with a straight face, in the middle of this recession, 'you should get one too'. Now, I'm not too phased by his suggestion, but I told him I was fine with my current notebook, which was a Parition of Windows XP and Windows Vista, and the specs were fine. Of course, he completely ignored my entire partition and comment and replied with 'But Vista's shit. Macs are so much better'. This again?

Now, before I start going off on a tangent, I will say that I don't hate Macs. I don't have a problem with people wanting to have Macs, and I won't say something ridiculous like how its useless or anything like that. In fact, I think they have a pretty interface and they're fairly streamlined. What I do hate, however, is the poor amount of word and the misguided beliefs that Macs tend to give their users comparatively to other computer users, a title that was briefly held by Ubuntu users.

Firstly, nobody makes a solid argument as to why a 'Mac' over a &#039C'. Rather, the Mac's security system against hackers are much weaker comparatively to Windows and Linux. Charlie Miller, an analyst at ISE, confirmed this to be true when he hacked a Mac under 30 minutes, compared to the longer time spans of the Windows Vista and the Linux-based Ubuntu. Additionally, the interface of the Mac doesn't make anything any more practical, nor is it at image manipulation as people argue. Rather, a large portion of technical support for mainstream programs are Windows-based.

Secondly, VMWare is not a useful tool for Macs versus Windows, because Windows are more adept at running OSX and beyond rather than the other way around. Macs aren't built very well to handle partitions, let alone multiple Operating Systems that treat these partitions differently.

Thirdly, the most important thing about the conflict with Macs is that they're difficult to upgrade yourself, near impossible. Changing the hardware specs of the Mac leads to you voiding your warranty, or worse. Lawsuits have been enacted in the name of opening a Mac. Now, I'm not here to say that Vista is better - rather, it's annoying as shit with the user account control interface, but neither of them are superior. A wishy-washy answer, yeah, but there's no position to say that one or the other is better, even if one did use the other for a while and switched.

My computer's run fine for a long time, and its lasted longer than Macbooks twice its cost. Maybe I'm just being bitter and pissy.

I browse on alot of anime forums, and one of the most annoying things I see are the threads that are usually people who want to write a manga, write a character, write a setting or anything of that sort. Now, the keyword in this whole debacle is write. I have no problem with people writing their own stories. In fact, I do it myself. However, the problem I have in these particular scenarios is that they ask for artists to do the drawing for them. Now, here's where the gray area of my annoyance begins to become more absolute.

When asked, they'll give a generic response such as 'a character that's a cavalry rider from the middle ages, and he was betrayed by his noble and he seeks revenge, but the rider is a powerful swordsman so assassins are sent out to...' - this is the main problem. Most of these requests are frankly not worth actually demonstrating, not because they're bad, or because they're cliched, or anything like that, but because they haven't given any definition to the character. They've told the plot. If this was someone drawing out a character, people would base it entirely off the technical ability of this artist. However, in writing, the fine line between a fantastic piece of literature, a hard work piece of literature and a lazy piece is much more difficult to recognize.

The effort these people have placed into forming their characters are the equivalent of drawing stick figures and expecting people to follow with it. It's not a concept that works very well on a regular basis, yet people who consider themselves writers do it. Rather than simply spew off ideas that were formed out of other ideas, why not try to draw these characters themselves? To take the easy way out and say that one cannot draw well is not an excuse at all.

Or perhaps I'm just being pissy, but when someone pitches an idea and wants someone to draw it, the amount of effort they put into writing that particular piece better be on the same level as the ones who will end up drawing it.

Heyo! This isn't about me in an any way. Except for this first paragraph, heh. Anyhow, given that it's been over a year that I've been on dA (2005 - early 2007 don't count, as I didn't do anything), I'm come across alot of artists with some fantastic work. Of course, many of them are properly given their pageviews and watchers, but the majority of great deviants aren't. I've seen alot of work by alot of deviants who deserve more credit than they get, and while I certainly don't have as many pageviews as to garner that much attention, I can certainly help.
So with the world in a giant bucket of economic trite, we've hit the sector where all the fields of jobs are being hit - hard. We've entire sectors of the automotive industry being shut down, massive levels of bank withdrawal and transfers and what Canadian Finance Minister Minister remarked as 'substantial' in terms of budget deficit for the upcoming year. Although the main storm by some economists are done and through for the better, and technically, we're out of the 'recession', given that our economy is stabilized once, meaning the 6 month consecutive rule of recession is over, we're still due for a long overhaul in terms financial issues.

In relation to that, I met with a friend of mine who works in the repo business. Repo, as in repossession of unclaimed and unpaid property on part of companies and banks. His job is impervious to the economic downfall. In fact, while the rest of the world stagnates, he prospers. The most frightening thing is that he wanted to become a Repo Man since the beginning.

Ever since Grade 1, he's stated he wanted to become a Repo Man so he would never be out of a job. Well, all facts considered, I believed that out of the class of astronauts, doctors and Batmen, I believed he wins the award for practical intelligence out of my class of puckered-nose idealists.
Sorry guys, I don't usually rant, since I want to avoid as much drama as possible, but I got hit with the biggest bombshell ever recently. After 3 days, I went from optimistically tied to single. Reread the sentence. 3 days.

LOLWUT

Now, I'm not so much in pain or anger or any of that as much as I am both amused at the whole predicament mixed in with genuine surprise at the sheer suddenness of the declaration. She literally stated that she didn't want to be my girlfriend anymore, and I concluded that if a girl was going to break up with me this early on, I might as well not bother trying to prolong a dying animal that was our relationship anyhow. However, this has really opened my eyes. Not for the better.

But for the generation of more ambiguous lulz.

My previous relationships with women weren't exactly pleasant. I'm going to be as neutral as I can in my portrayal of them, but I know that my first girlfriend and I broke up on entirely perfect reasons in the respect that we were both drifting into different social groups and were moving on. We still keep in touch as good friends, even if she is all the way in Montana (yay!).

The same was with my second girlfriend, though our relationship lasted considerably longer. Same reasons, same thing. This was added when she fell in love with somebody else, though, which when I looked at it, she really liked him. So I bit the bullet and went with the break up. However, my third relationship was a giant trite pile of massive gank-level disgust, which wasn't pleasant.

Actually, it wasn't too bad until I found out she cheated on me.

Twice. LOL

With different guys. Inconsistency much?

I don't know. Perhaps I'm just being a bitter man, but - HOLY SHIT.

I'M GOING TO END THIS RANT NOW BEFORE I GET ANYMORE DRAMATIC THAN I ALREADY AM.

[link]
OMFG HE GOT A BLASTOISE

Exam times are troubling, and I have a History of Empires exam coming up tommorrow (which sounds super badass as a course, actually, but it really isn't that cool - more like difficult to write about), but I was perusing a few mangas as a break from studying, and I remembered Boku ni Natta Watashi, which stood to me amongst other shoujo mangas because, well, the mangaka knows how to write dialogue.

I know when translated from Japanese to English it might be twisted a bit and changed to suit the images, but alot of manga seems to lose their touch when directly translated (but then again, what do I know? I only know some Katakana and the Hiragana alphabets, so I can't complain). Anyhow, Boku ni Natta Watashi had a single quote I remembered that forever put in my mind as Ako Shimaki as being a half-decent writer (not that I'm calling myself one).

"We can meet up to study together. And when we go on dates, you'll finally be able to wear skirts. And I'll be able to show you off to all my friends. If you're lonely, you can always try to sleep. Then the distance parting us won't seem that great. You'll wake up in your own bed, and I'll call you every single morning and say the same thing. How are things going?

I still love you, Momoko."

Damn it, I need to curb this shoujo manga addiction. Anyhow, anybody have any memorable quotes from any mangas they've read? It doesn't need to be shoujo or whatever.

- I'm still upset over the fact that Napoleon was defeated by a shoemaker. This is mainly because centuries then on the British attacked the French for having their greatest threat (who wasn't even french) beaten by a shoemaker.

- I don't understand the purpose of political correctness. There's no such as thing as being politically incorrect - unless you failed politics.

- Countries like China don't have rampant serial killers or school shootings because there isn't the freedom to glorify them.

- Failure, to me, like a Cerberus; from one body stems multiple heads, but either way you approach it, it'll still fuck you over.

- I can't get over people thinking that swords are cool. It's nice to be still within the mindset that giant slabs of metal with the intent of cutting apart flesh cool, but that doesn't mean that people should go make meat cutters weapons.

- Guns are practical today. Bio-engineering is practical tomorrow.

- Supporting our youth today and looking into the long run for them will definitely help our youth. Though the effort we put into may not come to fruition, and in a liberal society like ours, that's a bit risky.

- The homeless are homeless by circumstance, just like how I choose not to give them change by circumstance.

- War in the Middle East is a moot topic. When one region houses an ideology that preaches defense against outsiders, another preaches turning the other cheek and another preaching dominance, it's idiotic to think that there won't be problems for a very long time.

- Time Travel is impractical and expensive. Like that movie, The Time Machine.

- Someone who's good-looking doesn't make him a bad actor. Someone who's mediocre doesn't make him a good one.

- Today, it's popular to be a cult success. If you're not, you're a sellout.

- Coveting your neighbor's ox nets a pitchfork in your leg. Coveting your neighbor's wife nets syphilis. Although you can live with a hole in your leg, people seem to prefer coveting wives.

- God put pride as a sin for a reason, and its to make sure that people don't grow up to be assholes. I guess the Quality Assurance staff were on break when this all happened, so I guess God's not going to be happy.

So multiple annoyances pile up into vast idiocy.

Firstly, people keep sending me notes on both art trades, collabs and requests. Firstly, I don't have enough time anymore to do that on a whim like I used, but usually I'll pick it up if I'm feeling alright. Requests are an entirely different matter.

Geeeeeez, nobody catches my kiriban and asks of me to draw things for them? I apologize, but I have limited time, and I do want to do the things I want to do, and draw what I want. I know I sound like an ass, but I do have 2 jobs, University, a dying social (which requires frequent ass-kickings to keep it alive) and all other unsavoury things to keep track of.

If you want me to draw something, just try and catch my Kiriban. I mean, I update them pretty often, but now I have it on a huge gap because nobody bothers so I decide to just do it at lengths.

Nevertheless, on another note, I read 's journal, and not to mock her, but I made my own opinions checklist gig:

- I am a Buddhist. Fuck yeah.

- I am straight. I wish I could play both fields (that means I would be able to date multiple people that much easier...)

- I DO NOT support abortion. But I am NOT AGAINST it. I am in support, however, of giving really shifty, elitist looks at people when they go into abortions clinics.

- I support homosexuality. However, most of my homosexual friends are assholes, therefore I hate them. But for entirely different reasons.

- I am Canadian. Ensue lulz.

- I believe sex then marriage is appropriate. You need to make sure that you know what you're doing on your honeymoon.

- I support the Jews. I would be considered in league with Socialist Stormtroopers otherwise. If you get that history reference, then lulz.

- I used to have a girlfriend, and I am not against PDA, but neither am I in support for it. If you want to suck on each other's faces, go ahead. Just don't do it in a fucking elevator with 20 other people. That's just uncomfortable.

- I think naked women, portrayed in artistic sense with artistic style embodying the metaphysical manifestation of base human animalism and bodily symoblism is art. Otherwise, I would consider it as a poor excuse for porn.

- I believe I will piss alot of people off. If not, then probably HoneyAppleNinja, at least. I am not sure why, either.

- I don't believe in bashing someone because of their religion, race, etc.

- I find it amusing when people call Buddha fat. Mainly since he was, under the assumption they were referring to Hotei. Otherwise, Siddharta did some pretty trippy shit, and therefore he would probably care less, and therefore I care less.

- I believe that shallow people are just honest.

- I believe the &#039leading insanity' is a female criminal's greatest weapon.

- I believe Mahmoud really needs to adopt a westernized nickname, because saying 'Mr. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad' is not as exciting as it sounds.

- I am Canadian. Obama relations do not affect me, because Stephen Harper can't change Canadian legislation to the extent nor does he have the executive ability to overthrow the multi-party system here in the good ol' north.

- I love all my female friends. I consider my male friends healthy competition.

- I put my future self first. Then my angelfish named Rambo. All others fall accordingly.

- I had no idea NAMBLA existed.

- I don't see killing Child Molestors / Rapists as a viable option, mainly since there is evidence that chemical imbalance is a strong deciding factor in what people see as attractive rather than just phychological constitutioncy. Therefore, I don't think someone should be killed because he was born with messed up chemicals in his brain, even if he is extremely creepy.

- I don't take jokes. I consume. Like fucking Unicron.

Alright, instead of having pageviews (which is based on sheer luck), I will be using a different way to decide Art Gifts - song lyrics. I will post up song lyrics (under my name), and the first person to get the name of the song right wins. Now, given the vastness of songs out there, it has to be the song I'm thinking of, not just any song with that lyric.

It might be hard, might be easy. I don't know.

Next one will be movie quote.

****

And...judging commences.

But first, it's only going to be one prize, since there's not that many submissions per person. Nevertheless, let's see how it turns out.

Alright, I made references to this a month ago, but now is the time to actually get it into gear. Behold, the dastardly Fourth Contest I've held so far, and with two judges helping me this time.

Us three will be judging, although the final decision will rest with me, I will be relying on their opinion heavily given my very limited internet access. Of course, any submissions anyone presents must be done in this journal so that they can put it into consideration when I'm unavailable (which will be often). The Contest will go until August 1st, and will be the following.

You are to invent your own Pariah, with your own unique superpower for him / her. You may have more than one character designed, and it may be in the form of a text as in a biography for him or a full blown drawing, but please note where information regarding the name, powers, main country of residence and any other information you may find pertinent. What I will need, at the very least, is knowing what he / she looks like, how old (Pariah age very slowly, remember), his / her power (please, not 'any power' and nothing incredibly overpowered), name, and if it's a turned Pariah (aka a female), what their life was like before they turned into a Pariah.

For those unsure of what a Pariah (or what the story entails) is, Pariah revolves around what seems to be a middle-ages, feudal system world, but it is actually a post-apocalpytic world that has been bombed to the stone age by a particularly vicious group of unnamed aliens who are referred to by the humans as the ' Pariah '. However, the Pariah, now being dominant over the planet, have split up the world into 12 Districts, each ruled by an Overseer, controlling vast empires in a relatively peaceful manner.

The story revolves around a girl, Saru Sougo, who resides within Pariah controlled Japan, hired as a police officer put in the position to defend the visiting Pariah Overseer of the country, a Chinese Pariah by the name of Qing Chon, whom she falls in love with at first sight after he saves her. Joining him, Saru is plunged into the deep, vicious and chaotic world of the normally complacent society of the Pariah, and the story actually is told from one Takaya Nguyen, Captain of Qing Chon's personal vanguard.

The Pariah in the story are a slang term used to describe a group of aliens whose pure lineage goes back to entirely male populations. It is essentially talking about their assimilating nature and how they cannot be considered part of their original breeds nor are they a species entirely of their own. Essentially, they're outcasts. The Pariah carry impenetrable skin - however, it differs from hardened composition. Pariah actually, are unaffected by exertions of force upon them - suffice to say, they instantly and automatically emit an opposite natural force to entirely nullify the oncoming force. As such, ballistics and force-reliant weaponry (such as bullets) cannot come near to harming the Pariah. However, energy based attacks - such as fire - are perfectly fine.

In addition to their negation of force-based damage, the Pariah reach static maturation periods. When fully matured, a Pariah will stay in that period of time for as long as it exists, unchanging. This presents itself as a double edged sword - a Pariah usually (it'll still happen) cannot die of old age nor age past the maturation cycle, but also they cannot heal their wounds without outside assistance, such as medical machinery or special procedures in cleaning and treating wounds.

You may submit more than one piece, and the winner will recieve a 6 Month subscription from me, and others...

I seem to be an asshole magnet.

But recently a friend of mine (who has no drawing / painting / singing / dancing or any artistic value or appreciation whatsoever) blatantly stated after seeing Sierra and Ulquiorra as a Girl that anime is not an art form. Of course, I usually don't care too much, but surprisingly, amongst a number of my friends, it's an accepted opinion, and widely endorsed in some circles. So, in hopes of clearing things up, I'm going to cut up the terms of art and anime in hopes of coming a conclusion through cold, hard, literary science. And no one can do much against science, right?

Well, let's begin. What is art? Dictionary.com dictates art as:

art1 Audio Help /ɑrt/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[ahrt] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun
1.	the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance.
2.	the class of objects subject to aesthetic criteria; works of art collectively, as paintings, sculptures, or drawings: a museum of art; an art collection.
5.	any field using the skills or techniques of art: advertising art; industrial art.
6.	(in printed matter) illustrative or decorative material: Is there any art with the copy for this story?

So art, according to Dictionary.com, is a piece of work considered beautiful or appealing, has a particular meaning, uses a distinctive set of skills to create a piece or is decorative or illustrative in nature to another object.

Oxford Dictionary notes art as:

"...the expression of creative skill through a visual medium such as painting or sculpture. 2 the product of such a process; paintings, drawings, and sculpture collectively. 3 (the arts) the various branches of creative activity, such as painting, music, and drama..."

Generally, attempt to express some level of creative (as it does not denote what level) skill through the final product of a manufacture of a visual medium.

Wikipedia states that art is "... a product of human activity, made with the intention of stimulating the human senses as well as the human mind; by transmitting emotions and/or ideas."

So generally speaking, art is a medium that carries some sort of meaning or idea through the transmission in the stimulation of the human senses. In this case, mainly sight. Now, the question is whether Anime could be considered an art.

For this to happen, it would need to fulfill two criteria - does it stimulate the senses (as in does it appeal to the eyes) in a way that makes the message visible? For example, if I draw a girl driving a car, will you get the message that the girl is driving the car? If you did, the first requirement is fulfilled.

Now, does it fill the purpose of sending an idea or emotion across? If, say, I wanted to make that idea to be safe driving, and drew an anime girl driving a car with a seat belt, would one be able to discern the idea as 'Drive with a Seatbelt' or 'Drive Safely'? If so, then according to the sources, it is art. This is also true for concept art and art meant for conventions, books, or any sort of medium that requires it. It serves the idea of complimenting or illustrating a concept towards an audience. It must have a sufficient idea or emotion, and also have a sufficient means of sending that across.

If it fills those criteria, it's art, strictly speaking. Now, I understand that there's alot of fanart that's not considered 'real art' since it's technically not their original concept, but take a look at it this way: the purpose of a fanart is to express an artist's liking to a certain piece. Let's use Bleach for example.

If I draw a picture of Ichigo, say, riding a motorcycle, that gets across the message that I drew Ichigo (therefore leading to believe that I like Ichigo) riding a motorcycle because I thought it'd be cool to draw Ichigo riding a motorcycle (which honestly, I think sounds pretty awesome). However, if I fail in properly sending that message across (say, it's so badly drawn it's indiscernable or I draw Ichigo riding a hummer and say its about Ichigo and motorcycle), then it's an insufficient means of sending across the medium's message, and therefore, not art. Fanart, like it or not, is called fanart for a reason - it's the transmission of the message that such an artist enjoys such a series that they'll make art to send that message across, and possible any existing concepts.

It's for these reasons that a white circle (or black, whatever) in a black (or white, whatever) field is also considered art - it, very powerfully, sen...

Honestly, I had no idea how I was going to be able to choose, since there were so many damn good submissions.

So, ToolOfTheDay, congratulations on that, *claps*, you win a 6 Month Subscription. Hooray for you, and I hope you enjoy that.

Now, there's a second contest for any of you interested, and this time its about the same theme, though it'll be the second part of the first contest - original character design. I'll get more details up, but because you guys came so damn close, I'll let those participating know that this time it will contain multiple judges - hopefully.

Give me a second on that. Alright.

2P Contest

Alright, this second contest holds an odd prize - Three 3 Month Subscriptions. I need someone to help me judge this one. Anyone interested please hit me up on msn at: yaochong.yang@hotmail.com. Like how I am funding these ridiculous projects out of my own pocket, signing up as a judge will mean you will be unable to submit one in.

The theme, this time, is Original Characters. I still need a Pariah character, so anyone who wants to join will have to follow this only rule. It can be in any format, as long as its an original character, and a Pariah.

There is no limit on how many you submit, and to let you know, if more than one of your pieces win, then you get that equivalent number in subs (for example, if two of your pieces win, then you get two subs). For those who don't understand who or what the Pariah are, then please refer to my previous contest info:

The Pariah in the story are a slang term used to describe a group of aliens whose pure lineage goes back to entirely male populations.

Yar, so there's only a few days left. Remember, you can submit your own Original Character.

6M
Competition Ends June 1st

UPDATE I found out that I have one missing slot for a Pariah in my upcoming story, Pariah. What does this mean? You are able to enter in an original character of your own if you wish, or just do the regular Qing Chon-based picture. Technically speaking, it's a design-your-own-Pariah competition, and the winner with the best Pariah or best Qing Chon picture wins the 6 Month and has their Pariah as one of the 12 within my next story. If you're submitting, please in the description on your deviation the name, the personality, weapon (remember, it's around the feudal age in terms of technology), and additionally, his special ability. When I say special ability, I mean in a sense one unique power he/she possesses. For example, Qing Chon possesses the ability to know whether someone is lying or not. Sierra possesses tears that can eat away at anything it touches.

Remember, you can submit more than one submission, and my money's in, so when the deadline hits, it hits.

End UPDATE

How's it going, guys? Like I said, this competition has only 1 Winner, but it has a 6-Month Subscription, so anyone interested has the privilege to enter. Now, for what I'm looking for, the above picture right there is the image that every entry must revolve around in some way, shape or form. You can write or draw, it doesn't matter. You can draw your character interacting with him, it doesn't matter. You could try and draw him, or even try to touch it up, it doesn't matter. Since I am the only one hosting this contest, I will pick based on personal preference, not overall-ness, so if you submit this awesome thing and expect to win, you might not if I don't like it. It's a risk, yeah, but you have nothing to lose, pretty much.

Now, the image is in fact a picture I drew a long time ago, then coloured it really quickly for this contest revolving around my new story in the works, Pariah, which will be posted after The Liquid Heavens and The Equilibrium of Adoration are finished (which, frankly, is not near completion for either of them). Pariah revolves around what seems to be a middle-ages, feudal system world, but it is actually a post-apocalpytic world that has been bombed to the stone age by a particularly vicious group of unnamed aliens who are referred to by the humans as the ' Pariah '.

Joining him, Saru is plunged into the deep, vicious and chaotic world of the normally complacent society of the Pariah.

The Pariah in the story are a slang term used to describe a group of aliens whose pure lineage goes back to entirely male populations. The Pariah carry impenetrable skin - however, it differs from hardened composition. The Pariah function much in this way, though because of their lack of a desire to reproduce sexually, they continue to sire only males.
