I think the reason my inking hasn't been working out is because I've been using the pens, rather than a brush with india ink. The pen is very restricting and I feel like I need to layer it over and over again. I think the brush would give me nicer lines, plus the india ink is really really black, unlike the pens. The pens tend to have a green/yellow tint to them and do not scan well.

I'm going back to traditional media for awhile, because I feel it will really strengthen my digital work. I realized I had never attempted a realistic portrait in water colors, and it's about time that I did.

I'm suffering from that restless boredom that is preventing me from getting anything done. I keep expecting something to happen...but nothing's going to happen! I know I need to work on my requests, and I have started working on all of them, but I can't get my butt to the desktop to work on my digital stuff. Right now I'm on the laptop, in front of the TV. I also need to work on my Bridgeman's figure drawing book. My goal is to do a couple pages or an hour (whichever comes first) from the book until I finish it.

Last night I had this horrible dream about a former schoolmate. I dreamed that she was actually a serial killer and had been burying people underneath the stairs leading up to her porch. She lived in this run down house out in the boonies that was really creepy. The thing that was so scary was that a week before (in the dream) she had kept inviting me out to her house for a visit, and when I found out she was a serial killer I realized it was because she wanted to kill me, just like all those other people.

The really terrifying thing is that in real life this girl might be capable of such a thing. *shudder*

Only 4 more figure drawing classes to go! I'm really hoping to take it again in the spring.

The one really good thing about the class is that it's made me "study" more. I gave up on figure drawing for awhile and would just dive into a project. Now I take the time to do a quick gesture drawing, arrange the composition and really look at the pose before I start. I still struggle with finalizing it though. It's too much fun to just stay in the sketching phase, it looks so much more interesting to me, and I can do a billion of them.

Now I just need to avoid slacking off over the winter, when I tend to get really lazy. We're not traveling at all this winter break because hubby has to work so much. So I shouldn't have a lot of distractions and no excuses for not keeping up.

My hubby is coming home in a few minutes

We've had a resurgence in the Honeymoon phase and life feels wonderful right now. I don't understand people who are so eager to "get away" from their spouses or SO. He is my best friend and if I had to spend my life with only one other person in the world, it would be him.

I've done all the preliminary sketches for the requests below. Today is another Figure Drawing class, there are only 5 more to go! I'm going to take it again in the spring though, because it's not that expensive and I've learned soooo much in just a few months.

They just give you a few words or a phrase and you just draw what you see, in under an hour and a half typically.

Health update: Apparently I have Celiac Disease aka Gluten sensitivity. I've avoided gluten for a week now and I have never felt better in my life. The test for it came back negative, but my doctor husband said that doesn't mean anything. It hasn't been that hard to keep on the diet because I don't eat a lot of carbs anyways, and there are so many gluten free options now from big companies (Betty Crocker is one). I've already felt more productive, instead of being dopy, sleepy and out of it for most of the day.

I wish I could just draw without thinking so damn hard about it. It's really what stops me from starting or even continuing a new piece. I get too worked up about how BAD it's looking that I just quit. Sometimes I'll come back to it, but only after a couple weeks have passed. I return to just doing silly sketches that don't result in anything polished.

Ugh.

Then I look at other people's fabulous art and get jealous/frustrated because "OMG WHY CAN'T I MAKE IT LOOK THAT EASY??"

Went to the doctor the other day to find out about my GI problems, but they had no idea. I got some tests done but won't find out the results for awhile. le sigh... just trying to de-stress for the moment. I've been in a rough patch with my art for several months now, where I'm not creating art work on the scale I was about a year ago. There have been A LOT of things bothering me lately, nothing I'll go into here, but I'm working on them.

At the moment I'm just trying new things, working on basic skills and going to my figure drawing class.

This morning I have my GI appointment today to see if I really have IBS. Doctors appointments always make me nervous because I'm afraid they'll tell me something horrible.

I'm just hoping it's not an ulcer, Crohn's disease or cancer, god forbid. But my symptoms haven't been that bad, but they are getting worse. I just hope they'll be able to tell me what's going on with my body.

Just realized that the reason my Intuos3 tablet doesn't work on the laptop is because I forgot to install the latest drivers D'OH! My husband has his computer hooked up to the tv so he can play his video games. So we sit in the tv room a lot, and usually I'm on the laptop. I usually use it so I don't have to print out photos all the time, I can just dl the image and reference it straight off the screen- usually larger and in more detail than on a piece of paper.

I had tried using my tablet in GIMP and SUMO but it never worked properly. Total brain fart.

Probably going to carve pumpkins today

I've had serious art block for the past few weeks and it's just now getting better. Part of it has to do with company coming to visit every weekend for 3-4 days, and my husband being home for the past 3 weeks. For some reason this combination is deadly for my imagination.

I have drawn nothing except for during my figure drawing class, once a week. I'm going to try and fix this RIGHT NOW, and hopefully post something soon.

You put your pencil to paper, or your fingers to the keyboard, and no matter how hard you try, it all comes out wrong. You're writing incomplete sentences that read like a 5 years old's art project. Your portraits are coming out all wonky, and look nothing like they do in your head, or like the reference pictures. You put down some color on a drawing, only to realize it was completely wrong, but it's already half colored- NOW WHAT??

It's like everything you've learned has gone straight out of your head and you're drawing or writing like a beginner. So frustrating...guess it's time to take a break and watch a movie

I started to realize what was wrong with my digital paintings...none of them were rendered using an actual reference or source. I was just making stuff up in my head, which always leads to flat images with unrealistic/odd lighting. So for a little while I think I'll practice doing some straight drawings from references to get a hang of the brushes and things, just like I do for charcoal, watercolors, colored pencils, etc. I think I'll practice some more with watercolors as well, since sometimes the creation process is much the same- figuring out what layers go where, opacity, how the colors interact when blended and stuff.

In other news, I start my instructed figure drawing class in one week, and I'm sooooo excited! Someone to push me in the right direction every week. Hopefully I'll show some improvement over 3 months

I've also been stressing out needlessly over nothing again, making my IBS flare up, and ruining most of my days for the past week. It's really hard to concentrate when you're dehydrated and feeling crappy. But I think it's ok now, so I should start churning out more stuff.

I just ordered my Intuos 3 tablet, 6x8, refurbished from Amazon.com! It was $30 cheaper than a new one, and has some "cosmetic" problems with the case, but that's about it. If it doesn't work, Amazon has a pretty good exchange/return policy.

Thank you to :devmsklytron: and ~Almeruve for pointing me in the right direction. I took a look at different ones and the Intuos 3 seemed to do everything I needed. I'll probably just post some sketches or memes to begin with before I start doing actual drawings.

We did way too many things this weekend, and not enough relaxing. We had to do it though, because my husband is going to be working every day, with no weekends off. I will have more time to work on art, so that's a plus.

I've submitted my movie The Perfect Partner to 8 film festivals, so hopefully I'll get into at least one of them. It's the equivalent of getting your art in a gallery or having your writing published. I just figure I'll get more rejections than acceptances.

In a couple of weeks I'll start an instructed figure drawing class that will go from late September to mid-December. That's a lot of classes! I've decided not to go to the local college for a structured semester, but rather take one class whenever I can. It'll also stop me from continuing habits that I'm not consciously doing when I draw people.

I'll post the art requests pretty soon, probably by this weekend. Sorry for the delay. Once the weekend hits I hardly work on anything.

My poor cat Nibbler also has IBS it turns out

The poor thing has to be locked in the garage at night so he won't go to the bathroom in the house. We got him some pills today that are much cheaper than the steroid shot he was getting every month.

We had a friend in town for a few days, and had so much fun, that I didn't get anything done at all

This part is a little personal, so if you don't want to get into it, you've been warned...

Apparently I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome, which means my stomach and intestines are constantly bothering me, no matter what I eat or how often. I already have a milk allergy and a sensitivity to gluten, so IBS doesn't really come as a big surprise. There's no "cure" for it, you can only alleviate the symptoms, which have begun to interfere with my life.

For instance, my stomach gets so upset that I feel weak, dizzy, then get a cold sweat, and usually have to take a nap before I can function again. If it happens at night, I end up sleeping in because I can't sleep properly the night before, at the expense of feeding the cats and ruining my morning.

IBS can take up to 3-4 hours of my day. Time when I could be working on a new movie, drawing, picking up the house, or cooking.

It appears to be mostly psychological, and the more anxious, upset, or excited I get, the worse it becomes. Which is sad, because at the moment I think my life is pretty relaxed and stress free. I looked up some stuff about reducing stress, so I'm thinking that there is something lurking in my subconscious that is bugging me. Which might explain the reason I've been not so creative lately and barely producing anything.

Wish me luck as I try to deal with my newly labeled problem, which has actually been bugging me for over a decade.

In my inbox, 508 deviations!! I've gotten a teeny bit better about getting online since my husband is back at work, but errands have kept me away from home. It's all the stuff I neglected to do while we were lazing around for the past few months. I did draw a portrait of Ellen Muth (George from Dead Like Me), and I plan on shading it in over the next few days. I'll try to post the WIP as I go.

The weekend is coming up, so I'll disappear again, but I'll try to catch up on journals and deviations

Yeah I thought I was back to dA but I'm not really. My husband goes back to work tomorrow so hopefully I won't be distracted so much so I can actually draw something.

It's like having your best friend live with you, and neither of you have to work, so you just play video games, watch stuff, and go shopping every day. It's really really awesome, but you never get anything done.

We've been watching a lot of great tv shows lately- Lexx, Witchblade, John Doe, and movies- Crank 2, Star Trek, Ghost Dog: the Way of the Samurai. And some not so great movies, like TWILIGHT, which I also read, and hated. It's very, urmm, how do you say...not feminist at all, and really creepy. The dude stalks her, and tells her he could kill her at any time if he doesn't control himself. WTF. It's alright to be a damsel in distress and want to be saved all the time, but be honest about it! Bella acts like she's all tough, but she lets Edward do all of the talking, all the decision making, and lets him control who she talks to. I seriously felt like it was written in the vein of a barely suppressed softcore erotica. There's all the tension, and none of the consummation, which doesn't work well for me. Being a vampire is all about temptation, and giving into it, that's part of the fun guys. You have awesome powers, get to live forever and stay young, what's there to whine about?

And the writing, oh lord, don't get me started on the writing style. It's so bland and sounds like a writing project from middle school- use as many adjectives and adverbs as you can, even if you repeat yourself 10 times in one chapter!

I'm giving up on trying to keep up with dA for now

There are too many things going on with family. They're all good things

My husband is graduating from medical school and will be a doctor, his sister (who is now like my sister too) is coming to visit for a week, we're going to visit my parents and friends in my hometown for about a week as well, and several of our friends are actually moving to Texas and/or coming to visit and stay with us. And we actually just got back from vacation at the beach!

So for another month or two I'm just not going to really be around the computer.

And hey, you guys were right about WoW. It took over my life for about a month. We've decided to cut down on our play time, restricting it to a couple hours in the evening, instead of playing ALL DAY LONG.

omg I've been gone for SO LONG. It's been a mix of things over the last few months. I was dealing with some emotional stuff, with my friends and family that was causing stress all around. I have dealt with it in my own way.

Then I started play WoW (this was part of dealing with the stress) and basically avoiding reality completely. As many of you know, I don't work a day job, so immersing myself in video games or tv shows for several hours a day is a very bad thing. I finally got out of it just a few days ago, and have barely started drawing again. I did go to my gesture drawing class, faithfully, every week, so I was at least doing something. I've also been finishing up my movie, which I had been avoiding for a better part of the month. All that's left is to print out the DVD labels. I'm going to see about uploading it here to deviantArt. If not, it'll be on Youtube and MySpace.

I'll start working through my inbox and deviations today, since I know there are so many lovely things going on right now. I really missed everyone, and felt a sincere lack of inspiration from not keeping up with you guys.

I forget fairly often that my bad mood is often a product of my lack of creation. If I start to create, it dissipates immediately.

I've also figured out how to more loosely create portraits. I noticed I was drawing very tight and unforgiving, ruining the life between the photo and the drawing. My goal is to be looser and at the same time more confident.

I'm sorry I haven't been replying to comments and journals and deviations, and there is really no reason for it, just pure laziness. I'll get better about it starting now.

It was weird because I could draw a person from life pretty well, but I felt like my drawings from reference photos were always off. The difference came from drawing my photo refs like I draw from life, which is basically finding the shapes and form within the image.
