Right, so - where the hell have I been. Well, the last time I posted was... ah yes, April 24th (not including the awkward journal that self-posted about seven hours ago - no idea what happened with that).

So, I finished spring semester just fine, and surprisingly got on the Dean's List again! I was definitely expecting a few C's from that semester, but surprisingly the hard work paid off (or grade inflation struck again, who knows). My three-pages-too-short Italian paper for my Literature class apparently was deservèd of a higher grade than I would've given it, which makes me wonder what my professor was smoking while she was grading those.

For the last few weeks of May, I had a "Maymester" course about linguistics in the US (literally the "Lingustics 101" class that I really should have taken about three years ago) and had a grand ol' time. I discovered that my ideal thesis research project would be about online linguistics, aka "Computer-Mediated Discourse" (CMD). Alas, I picked Italian over Linguistics my senior year of high school, and Italy doesn't really understand the internets too well, yet, so I'm stuck doing a database website for my department about Scapigliatura literature. (Dammit all.) I'm hoping to sway a few people come August. Fingers crossed.

Now I'm taking a "Computer Science 101" class, which is teaching us how to program in Python and C++ and generally learn how to be a CS nerd. It's hard as fuck, and I'm barely holding a B- in that class. However, taking the class means that I can proudly say: I speak human languages and computer languages. Fucking awesome. But until the class finishes by the Fourth of July weekend, I'll be slaving over code, hoping I can finally write a program that works (one actually did, once).

dAv6 has been sneaking its way into our internets... If you haven't noticed, check out how the default avatar is different, now. I beta-tested v6, and - despite their odd color choices - I'm proud to say that I'm really looking forward to the final release! Plus, a new message center will be awesome.

Also, in the spirit of releasing a new version of the site, the dA team is giving Fella a makeover, and we get to vote which one we want! Head over here to vote by faving your favorite Fella. (Say that ten times fast.)

So, a thought just struck me today: I haven't dyed my hair any funky colors in about three years. This scared me, as I realized that I have about ten years left before dressing like a teenager makes me look like a poser, and I need to appreciate being wild as much as I can in these precious moments. That being said, my hair (dark blonde) doesn't hold neon colors very well, and last time I did a whole-head color, they had to bleach it (twice), and it only lasted for about a week before it started to fade, which made me sad.

What I found out today was that hair extensions aren't just for Claire's stalkers, but they can actually do some pretty kick-ass effects. I want some. Problem is, my hair doesn't like being messed around with, or I don't know what I'm doing, or both. Plus, I have really awkward clothes. Really awkward. Mostly polo shirts. I can't put in extensions and walk around with the clothes I have now, which means: shopping spree.

As it stands, with the coolest outfit, earrings, necklace, and eyeshadow combo that I own, this is all I can pull off (and no matter how much teasing/backcombing I did to my hair, this is as poofy/messy as it gets):

What is the Day of Silence?
The Day of Silence (www.dayofsilence.org), a project of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), is a student-led day of action when concerned students, from middle school to college, take some form of a vow of silence to bring attention to the name-calling, bullying and harassment -- in effect, the silencing -- experienced by LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) students and their allies. This year’s Day of Silence will be held in memory of Lawrence King.

Who was Lawrence King?
Lawrence King was a 15-year-old student from Oxnard, California, who was shot and killed in class on February 12 by a 14-year-old classmate because of King’s sexual orientation and gender expression. The hate crime received little media attention but has served as a rallying cry for the need to address anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment. Organizers have registered more than 100 vigils across the country in remembrance of King at www.rememberinglawrence.org.

This is not a pity message, just more of an FYI. If any of you have been keeping track, I've been remarkably MIA on dA for the past... uh... month. Explanation below.

For one (and I am unashamed in admitting this), Neopets has sucked me back into its little huge, time-consuming world.

Three pets, eight Neodaq stock investments, two site plots and a Christmas Paint Brush later, I realize how many actually useful things I could've done during all that time on the internetz. However, I've gleaned lots of new friends, learned more about how Neopet budgeting skills can be applied to the Real World, and provided *iamsostupid with yet a new way to stalk me. ♥

For another, I officially hate college, and want to graduate nao, plz. I'm currently finishing my penultimate (read: "second to last," aka "junior") year, but just because it's coming up summer doesn't mean I won't be busy. I'm taking two summer classes (C++ programming, and another Linguistics course) and will be researching worrying about how to write my Senior Thesis this fall. I'm basically surrounded by the ghosts of the would-be, could-be, really-hope-they-won't-be "Grades That Bring My GPA Down At the Last Minute Just Before I Graduate." On the upside, I'm officially taking Chinese "101" this fall, meaning I'll be starting my third foreign language! Yīzhǒng yǔyán yǒngyuǎn bùgòu*! 8D

As it stands right now, I have to finish by the end of this month: a Linguistics project (I'll be publishing the essay to dA!), a 20-minute presentation for my Literary Analysis class, a 10-page essay for my Italian class (in Italian), a debate for my Film Noir Writing class, and an argument essay (again, for Film Noir). Ah yes, and then final exams. May His Noodly Appendage bestow on me some kind of intelligence for the next 31 days.

Basically, moral of the story, I've been MIA for one good reason and one bad reason. But I've still been offline, and I apologize. Expect me to be AFK (*iamsostupid - :eyes:...) for yet another month or so, unless I randomly find some spare time when I'm not hoarding Neopoints for Secret Laboratory Map Pieces. One of these days, I swear, I will get these 459 messages answered, and the dA Babelfish updated.

Meanwhile, it seems that while I've been gone, =lostsoulx44 has acquired god-like talent. Visit her page, and make lots of yummy noises.

Exciting news! On Friday I switched from Windows XP to Ubuntu! I'm now part of the 3.6% of geeky users that have Linux operating systems! WOO! But it's kinda hard figuring some things out, which is very weird for me. I'm used to being able to troubleshoot just about anything in Windows, and now that I'm dealing with Linux, I'm one big question mark the whole time. FAQs and the Ubuntu forums have been my bibles over the last week, and I've been in a perpetual state of going literally the whole time (both because I realize I'm not a born computer geek, and that my queries all usually have very simple answers - except for those damned sudo commands... )

But I swore to myself that I wouldn't switch back to Windows, because it's not hard, it's just different. I totally crashed my computer the day after I installed Ubuntu, though. LOL. Thank god for =exsecror in #h3lp. Installing my tablet would've been a complete disaster without him. (With his help, it was only a minor disaster - HA.)

So, for those of you who wonder wth an Ubuntu desktop looks like, here you go:

Moving on from my geekiness...

I love the Italian Club here! I met up with two people I'd gone to Ferrara with this last semester, and talked with a guy I knew from another Literature class who'd gone to Ferrara the semester before I did! (He also gave me a ride home. Ehehe.) I talked so much tonight that my head was spinning by the end of it. My coffee probably didn't help hydrate me either, but you can't drink water at Italian Club. Come on.

Journal/Rants:

Well, good news - I talked with my thesis advisor today, and she told me that I'm too inexperienced with Italian literature to really know wtf I'm doing, so she recommended I take this semester off and start my thesis in the fall (which is normal scheduling - I'm actually a semester ahead with my major).

So, that means I don't have to cram in millions of pages of reading a day, plus I get a bunch of extra time to figure out if an honors thesis is really what I want to do - or if I just want to default to the regular senior thesis.

But, it just sort of threw a curveball at me, and today wasn't really the best day for that (the "little red dot" always gets in the way of major life changes... -_-;) I was really expecting to be this genius student who was great at Italian, would come up with a great paper topic, and then present it a whole semester ahead of schedule - and obviously that's not gonna happen. Plus, I've been an honors kid my whole life, and it's really hard finding out that (A) honors might not even be the right path for me, and (B) I'm not actually a genius (I have such a see-saw relationship with my self-esteem right now, it's not even funny)...

_{I so cried in my academic advisor's office today. Shhh, don't tell anyone. *absolutely mortified*}

Oh the plus side, I'm single on Valentine's Day, and I really couldn't give a crap.

Anyway, on to AFK news.

I got a job! Yay! I'll be working as a transcriber for a research division of the university. I get to hear people do interviews about their deepest, darkest secrets. Ooo.

In other news, I'm ridiculously social, now. I mean, potentially. I haven't racked up this many potential-friends since ... like, high school. I have the CU Open Source group that I mentioned in my previous journal, as well as this new job-thing, plus I'm meeting with the Italian Club on Wednesday nights (me + two girls so far - last time I hung out with them for four hours), plus a Harry Potter nerd I talk to in my Literary Analysis class, plus that Harry Potter nerd's friend who OH BY THE WAY is a girl I met about a year ago who is ALSO a Harry Potter nerd (FTW)!

Lulz. I r so social.

But then. D8

THESIS OF DEWM. I has one.

See, in order to graduate (and I'm explaining this to the high schoolers out there who don't know wtf I'm talking about), I need to write an über-long paper on the topic of my choice, and then "defend" it (basically, I'm up in front of a panel of judges, and they give me the third degree about my paper until I pass out). So I'm using this semester to talk with an advisor about what I want to write about (and submit an outline to a mysterious bunch of people who will "yay" or "nay" it by summer), and then I'll actually be writing all 30+ pages over the summer and into fall. My Christmas present will be that I'll have survived my thesis defense and have random no-brainer classes to do in the spring just to finish my degree.

Oh ya, and the thesis/defense will be all in Italian.
WHICH IS COOL I GUESS, COZ IT'S MY MAJOR. <- *positivity*
_{I'm trying so hard not to use the But it's in Italiannn... [whine] tactic.
I'm basically fluent now. I need to stfu.}

Ennyway, I'm having a hard time picking a topic. But I think I'm gonna do some kind of Italian combination of Russian Roulette and Wheel of Fortune, and just arbitrarily pick something for my advising meeting tomorrow.

What else... Ah yeah, the on-going saga of my eustachian tube dysfunction. (Read: "Disease of My Ears Won't Pop.") Been going on since about October of '06, and it's been really weird. Every doctor I've been to has been stumped so I need to go see Dr. House and now I've been moved to the allergy clinic. I had an allergy test done (which is so much fun, even considering how many shots I got) and discovered that I'm mildly/moderately allergic to cats (epic sadness), not at all allergic to dogs, pretty darn allergic to most trees (explains the spring sneezes), and really really allergic to a lot of molds (humidity + me = epic sneezing).

Anyway, point being, now I have to do a sinus wash and spray lots of things up my nose twice a day for the next month, just to see what happens.

I just met with the guy who's organizing the open source group here at CU Boulder, and it looks like I've got a spot in their group!

I'll be working on mostly graphics stuff with the other graphics guru(s), and help touch up the group's website with XHTML and CSS!

Hi, guys!

I've been back in America for about three weeks now, and classes started last week - life is back on track. :)

And - just to let you all know - I've developed a horrible habit of procrastination. You may or may not have noticed that I rarely and/or sporadically make comments and replies nowadays. Mostly, it's because I'm annoyed by dA's inability to let me edit my deviations, thus rendering me unable to update the dA Babelfish (200 of those 316 messages up there do, in fact, pertain to the Babelfish - I'd like to be rid of them all).

Rest assured, once that bug gets fixed, I will go through all the comments I have. I will conquer the evilness of procrastination! (I'd better, or else I'll fail this semester. D:)

Other than that, nothing really to say! I'm glad you all liked my redo of crouching-kitty's The Sharkery! I've got a few more projects I'm working on that you all will see in the near future, including something that will attempt to be a speedpaint-kind-of-painting (based on someone's lineart).

I'm also really excited about a new community created here on dA:

First of all, I'd like to wish you all a HAPPY 2008!

The year before I graduate from college - how scary is that...?
_{And I used to think my senior year of high school would never come...
Time flies, kiddos. It really does. D:}

Second of all, I want to give a HUGE EFFING TACKLE-HUG to *Splashie, who organized a secret plan with some of my other friends, and got me a freaking Wacom Graphire 4x5 tablet for Christmas, those lovable lunatics... (*sniff*)

Third of all, 2008 is the International Year of Languages, and *Subterranean-Hepcat is organizing a project - go check it out!

Fourth, I saw the JKR documentary - twice! It was really satisfying to have some new Harry Potter stuff to think about, and great to learn more about JKR, her wonderful world and its characters. I also have Lily Allen's "Smile" on repeat right now. XD

Fifth - and last - I'm finally leaving to go home tomorrow! I'm sad that my status will no longer say "Germany" (or "Italy," for that matter), and I will definitely miss being with my friends and mixing with foreign cultures - but I haven't seen my parents in four months, so I really miss them and can't wait to be back. :D

I'm still not through answering comments, but I swear I will get to them all. The irony of it all is, that by posting this journal, I generate more comments to answer. (Which means, of course, that I fail.)

Anyhoo, I hope everyone is prepared for returning to school, work and whatnot, and had a great holiday season and lots of fun on New Years Eve!

I'll talk to you all when I get back to the other side of the "pond"!

Apparently, while I was testing my new CSS, my journal decided to update itself... All I had was "Oh look, it's GREEN!" in my journal box, so - sorry about the complete lack of news the first time this appeared! XD I'm still testing some of it, and working on the links and such, so let me know what you think!

Italy was great! I came out of my shell (a bit) socially, learned a lot of new Italian vocab, learned to cook real Italian food, had some really challenging courses (which made me complain a lot but were, in retrospect, quite character-building)... It was generally full of EPIC WIN.

Now I'm in Germany (haha, so cosmopolitan) visiting my very good friend ~Splashie until a little after New Years, after which I'll be flying back to Colorado to spend my remaining ten or so days of vacation at my parents' house before moving into my new(!) apartment and starting classes again.

I have internets available 24/7 now, so I will definitely be getting back to everybody's comments - all 341 of them - and re-checking all the "watch" boxes so I can start updating on my favorite artists, friends, and clubs.

I'm so very sorry for the lack of updates and/or communication these past few months, and so I thank everyone of you for your patience!

I've been gone so long that I'm sort of behind on dA goings-on so please update me on dA events, personal events, and things like that! :)

[update] (about an hour later):
(MH is amused that the update is longer than the original journal.)

So I'm typing this email in this school building that I'm in (bumming their surprisingly fast internets), and I notice my laptop's running out of battery. So I whip out the millions of cords I use, tangle through them all and find the one I need.

As I pull it out, the end plug moves a bit faster than it should and (thanks to angular velocity) my adapter on the end goes flying across the room. I take a furtive look around to see if any of the other students have noticed my blunder, and all seems well.

I attempt to look cool and plug the non-adapter end into my laptop without looking behind, like I know everything, and I miss - by inches. So I stand up, look for the hole in my computer, and shove the plug in. I grab the end with the newly-reattached adapter and make for the plug on the wall, and am impeded. Physically. Why can't I move any farther, I think? ... Oh wait, I left my earbuds in. Whoops.

I casually pull them out and toss them onto the keyboard of my laptop (my email to my parents now reads "...I can't r8uegister until...") and they slide just as casually off my laptop, clinking on the floor.

By this time I feel like I've been transported into a comedy, and plug in my computer as softly as possible, in order to not attract more attention. All is well.

I go back to the bench where I've been typing, and sit on my notebooks.

Sometimes I don't believe it, myself.

In short, it's going just fine - I've been dealing with quite a lot of homework (way more than I'm used to, but nothing a late night and some Illy caffé can't fix).

I went to Rome this past weekend (had a blast), and went to the A.C. Milan vs. Roma game in October (also had a great time).

I've discovered that, had I the means, I would start watching soccer ("football") whenever possible. I love it to death, now. (And I know what to shout when the other team scores...)

I've also gotten into a Tokio Hotel kick, and recently bought a CD (I know, I bought a CD!) in Rome called "Schrei so laut du kannst" - basically a cooler version of their album Schrei. It has three extra tracks and videos. I'm in Emo Rock heaven right now.

Just a little update to let you all know that we're slowly discovering wifi hotspots close to my house here, so I should be on every couple of days or so.

So! Just in case you weren't in my watchlist back in April-ish, I'm leaving for Italy soon! I'll be in Ferrara (more information about that city here) to study the Italian language, and to take a few classes in literature, art, and Italian culture. :)

My flight leaves the morning of the 28th (next Tuesday) and arrives in Bologna (the closest airport) on the 29th!

I've requested to live with Italian people, and I've submitted my wishlist of classes, but I have no idea what is actually going to be out there for me - which is super dee-luper scary for me. D:

BUT. It's gonna be freakin' sweet.

However, I'm planning on dying from lack of the internets not having great internet access while I'm out there, so if you wanna stalk check out what I'm doing, I've got a LiveJournal blog that I'm going to update while I'm out there: Ferrara Café (my parents and co-workers are reading this blog, too, so try and be "nice" XD).

After I'm done with school, I fly up to Germany to visit ~Splashie and her family for Christmas and new years! That's gonna rock. I love Italy in the Christmas mode, but I think I like Christmas!Germany more. (For one, it's actually frosty. XD)

Anyway, I've got a little list of projects going now, so I'll do those while I'm out there and post whenever I get around to it. I'm always up for some collabs or commissions, but just be aware that I'm planning on being gone for about 3/4 of the time I'm out there.

I'll still be replying to comments, commenting on journals and deviations, and hanging out in #PotterShare until Tuesday (if the wireless internet holds up), but I just thought I'd give everyone a heads up on what's going on!

Hokai. So. I saw Order of the Phoenix again tonight - with real people (I know, I have a social life, wtf).

For the fifth time.

Not including times I've seen it on my computer.



(I'm going to see HBP six times and DH seven times. Just a little promise to myself.)

Anyway, I have a few new Harry Potter-related things to say.

1. I still internally giggle when Voldemort does his "FWAH!" pose during Harry's possession. And the possession scene is my favorite scene, so that's starting to drive me nuts. (Thanks a lot, [insert username here]...)

2. I actually, audibly laughed this time at the "I will attempt to penetrate your mind" line. I think I annoyed my neighbor, actually. Slap-the-knee kind of laughing. I loved it. (Thanks a lot, [another username here]...)

3. I realized just why I don't like the ending scene in this movie. Besides the fact that Harry just lost his godfather and can't actually be perky yet, the line "We have something worth fighting for" triggered a Disney response in me this time.

"What do we want?"
"A girl worth fighting for!"

That's right.
Disney is everywhere.

All right, so I tried a Harry Potter header (see my last journal - warning, Deathly Hallows spoilers and possible loss of sight due to ugliness). My current layout is about all my obsessive-compulsive personality will allow, unless I can come up with something else minimalistic, yet oozing with Harry Potter fandom. (Suggestions?)

Also, dA is really starting to bug me. I really wanted to start cleaning up my gallery, but they're having lagging issues. I hope that gets fixed, soon.

One last thing before I submerse myself in X-Files again: I've been scrounging around fruitlessly for a work-at-home freelance-ish colorist job. According to Dark Horse Comics' submission guidlines, I need five or more consecutive pages of a manga/comic to show off my style. (And, if I can, five or more consecutive pages of an entirely different manga/comic to show how I can change styles to suit to different plotlines.) If anyone has a manga/comic that needs coloring, please let me know. ♥

On an entirely unrelated note, having the sign of the Deathly Hallows on my journal makes me feel like I'm part of some kind of cult. I'm not sure how I feel about that. (Is the Harry Potter fandom considered a "cult," or is that just the Church's opinion?)

It was great.

Anyway, I finished Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows at about 3:45am Sunday morning (Mountain Standard Time, in case anyone wants to compare).

And wow, my head is still reeling from all the information that's been crammed into my head. I'm depressed at the series having ended, but now I have a lot (and I stress - a lot) of new things to think about.

I know y'all don't want to sit here reading paragraphs upon paragraphs of my opinions, so I'll turn the question back onto you - what did you think?

I'm flying out to Alabama again to see my three best friends in the whole world. <3

I promised one of those friends - way back in the summer of 2003 - that I would be with her for the movie version of "Order of the Phoenix." When she finished reading her copy, I had to counsel her through a half-hour crying session. Since then, it's been Friendship Law that this get-together happen.

The other two friends are coming because, well, we try and get together as often as we can, and with our busy college lives, this looks like one of those rare opportunities. Plus, we became friends because of our mutual interest in Harry Potter - how could we not be together at the end of the series? (That sentence was very surreal to write.)

We're going to see "Order of the Phoenix" on Thursday night, about an hour after my plane lands! They still haven't seen it, yet. We always wait to be all together before we see the movies, because we love discussing them afterward and generally making a big party out of it - but my circumstances makes it a bit awkward. They're such nice friends, though. They're still waiting for me.

We'll also be getting Deathly Hallows at a midnight release at a Barnes & Noble in Baton Rouge, Louisiana! Let me know if you'll be in the area!

I'll try and answer all the comments that I can tonight, but I'll be in and out until the 22nd, when I get back. (And when I get back, be prepared to hear an "OH NOES HARI POTR IS OVER & SO IS MY LIEF!!1" rant, though I'll try and keep it down.)

"Order of the Phoenix" is very different from the other Harry Potter movies - in a good way. It's more psychological. The magic is down-played to make way for an actual plot (no offense to the other movies), and all the characters get more layers to their personalities (always a plus in the Potter movie franchise, where characters are simply introduced because they have a part to play in the finale - like poor Ginny in "CoS").

However, some of the acting could have been better. I have to admit that in most of the movie the acting was incredible. But in some scenes, the characters seemed withdrawn and, I suppose, trying to act too much. Emma Watsons eyebrows also annoyed me - it's a habit she's gotten into since about third movie, and it's getting on my nerves. -_-

But overall, I would definitely say the movies are just getting better and better - "OotP" is very much the best one so far. Compared to something like "Narnia," however, it needs a bit of work - especially on the scenes where you feel there is character and plot development being left out (Potter fans, you know the kinds of scenes I'm talking about). There are certain scenes that felt a bit empty at times, but some of the other scenes were definitely full of emotion.

The Harry/Sirius relationship was very well-done. Sirius went from the weird, intense, eccentric prison-escapee that he was in GoF, to a pretty cool, suave, (hot) godfather. He and Harry got along beautifully.
Umbridge was actually a bit more intensely nice than I expected her to be. I expected the director to bring out her mean side a bit more than he did.
Draco Malfoy talked once during the movie - I was a bit disappointed, especially since his part in "HBP" is coming up.
Cho was also an awkward character - I'm not sure I liked how they did her plotline.

I think it's well worth the $9, or whatever obscene price they charge you at theaters, nowadays.

Oh wait, I paid $40 for my ticket.

*ticks off on fingers* Movie, drink, popcorn they promised me that I never got, two pieces of stick candy, Non-Bertie Botts Regularly-Flavored Beans, a bookmark, a pack of "OotP" collectible cards, and a pack of Harry Potter-themed stickers. No poster, no autographs... Had to stand in line for an hour and a half... But I did see the movie two days early... And the sugar high is setting in... Yeah, I think $40 was pretty worth it. XD;

The soundtrack is also good, too.

Yes, yes - I got to see Draco, Seamus, and some vaguely recognizable croney Crabbe. Far away. In dim lighting. No pictures could've been had. But, they are doing an autograph session tomorrow. I don't think Tom Felton will be there, though, so I'm wavering on going/not going... Plus, each autograph is - again - for charity (just like the movie was). So, I'd have to pay $10 an autograph...

Two weeks ago, it seemed like OotP was never going to get here. Now it's here.
On Thursday I fly out to Alabama to see it again with my friends.
And then next Saturday - next Saturday, I get DH.

My Neopets account was hacked. D: I lost, like, 100,000NP. And now I can't log into it anymore. And the person collected my plot prizes and got my trophy. It's just a site, I know, but it's annoying to think someone is taking all the credit for my hard work. I won't be going down without a fight - I contacted the staff and we've been discussing getting my password back. I'm gonna nip this hacker in the bud, and hopefully have him/her frozen in the process.
