To be crazy, fa la la la la, boing doing doing doing.

I'm not sure why I channel the insane at this time of year but I feel capable of small feats of wonder. For example: I'm learning how to sew.. like I literally just started and thus have decided that at least 6 people are getting sewn creations by me.. smart? maybe not but if it works out, I'm a machine!

I'm also cooking up a storm and sending yummy goodies and we're decorating the tree this weekend, I'm finishing my first knitting project (Artisan Crafts community, I'm doing everything in my power to be ONE OF YOU! I'm such a n00b)

I'm sending electronic cards for the most part, save the environment and money and sadly time, I'm always late and I want to get to everyone. I have a bunch of thank you cards to send out, and some canning to do (time for homemade tomato sauce!)

On the deviantART front.. well I have a team meeting that started two minutes ago I should really get to (HOLD ON TEAM I AM COMING!).

We soft-launched groups YAY! The conversion and make requests are coming in at an insane rate and I'm sure to be caught up soon! I love groups. I know there are kinks still but I already feel so proud to have been a part of this project. What are your feelings? Do you like them? Do you have suggestions? Drop them off here! Let's have a conversation!

I'm still restructuring the Literature gallery (it's huge and takes a lot of time) and I want to make sure I don't break anything because I have a habit of doing that

I'm also making plans for 2010! Groups I'm working on #fella #communityrelations and #deviantHEART to name a few and I'm a proud member of #FuckYouBear

I'm also judging a myriad of contests, Wacom, Love Unites, Darksiders and World Aids day - which continually proves to me how amazingly talented our community is...

Dear Santa,

I have been a very VERY devious girl this year. I think we both know that I've worked really hard and despite those naysayers.. never EVER doubted that you exist.

As such, I would like to request the normal stuff.. a cure for cancer, world peace and some environmental happiness but in addition to that..

I totally want some new deviantWEAR!

Clearly, I need the new set of stressballs, sometimes the dArama can get to be a bit much and without them, who knows what could happen. Besides, the cats really enjoy them too so it's like a double gift. Also, it's very cold over here in Canada - being from the North Pole, I'm sure you can relate, and as such I would like the NEW vert hoodie in small and you should probably pick one up for yourself (maybe not small mind you.. just saying!)

Moving along! the stickers are a must have as I need to apply deviantART pride to my luggage and finally, it's obvious that I need a llama shirt (women's medium) to honor the llama that serves us all.

I hope this isn't too overwhelming and you find it in your heart to make my holiday wishes come true.

Music Craziness

I'm often questioned as to why deviantART doesn't have a music section and I have formed an almost automated response as a result of how often this question comes up. I don't know if people really believe what I'm saying, or don't understand but this story here may help to shine some light on the litigious music industry and why we have taken the stand we have.

When they're sending in undercover reps from the labels into karaoke bars to find copyright infringements... that's when you know we're not ready to play in that particular pool of insanity.

Maybe one day, I'll never say never.. but man..

I think this particular story goes a bit far but maybe that's a rash judgement, what are your thoughts?

Update! Apparently the story is a tad sensationalized (and that link above doesn't seem to allow everyone to see it) but here is an updated version of what went down Even the un-sensationalized version creeps me out a bit

Flu, Literature and Anarchy

Flu

My week in HQ was productive and entertaining as always but when I returned back to homeland, the flu took me down like an eagle-eyed sniper. I'm certain I've slept more in 6 days than I have in 6 months yet still feel exhausted. Thankfully, there's a light emerging at the end of the tunnel and I'm starting to feel a bit better. The flu sucks - in case you have any doubts

Literature

During my medication induced fog, I felt it appropriate to start plotting out the changes to the structure of the literature gallery as suggested by the community and let me say the final product looks cleaner, logical and exciting! The challenge is the current complicated structure of the gallery and morphing that into the new awesome version with the least amount of pain and suffering inflicted on the community. By next week I intend to have a plan on how to face this challenge and I'll be explaining in detail what's going to happen so as not to take the community by surprise. Keep an eye on this journal and #communityrelations for more updates

Anarchy

My plane leaving LA was scheduled for 8am on Saturday so I got to LAX around 6am, checked in and cleared security and began my quest for coffee. I headed to the Starbucks, ordered a coffee and then took a seat and opened up my laptop. Out of the corner of my eye I noticed a guy wearing a Sons of Anarchy hoodie and thought.. "man.. I totally want an SoA hoodie" and then went back to work. The guy sat down at the table beside me and it dawned on me, this wasn't just any guy, this was Kim Coates from Sons of Anarchy!

Now if you're Canadian, you may not have a clue what I'm talking about so I direct you to wikipedia to read about the show called Sons of Anarchy....

Yesterday my poor Yoda returned home after being neutered with a giant evil plastic satellite dish on his head. He was sad and depressed and kept running into walls before finally, finding a way out of it.

Obviously, it's important that he not have access to his stitches but really, a satellite dish? We've come so far and this is the best we can offer our pets???

Perhaps I was inspired after working all day on building new categories for the Artisan Crafts gallery. Perhaps it was sympathy and a drive to find a new way of doing things but most likely it was the pathetic look Yoda kept giving me.. whatever it was it lead me to creating a body sock for my little furry friend.

It covers all the necessary access and is snug enough that he's not quite able to reach the stitches. It also makes me think of Olivia Newton John but really.. I'll let the picture speak for itself.

He's moving around well, and not staring at me depressingly. Everything that needs to come out of him seems to with no issues (or mess) and he hasn't attacked his stitches. So far a win.

It seems like an eternity since I've written but in reality it hasn't been. So let's catch up! (quick grab a coffee or a cup of tea!)

The Walk

*gimp and I completed the 60km Weekend to End Breast Cancer on September 12th-13th and it was amazing. In the last 7 years this event has been the highlight of my year. It's a time I watch the power of community and the individual who believes they can make a difference, really shine and it always restores my faith in humanity.

This year there was a monumental change. This year the walk was broken down so you could participate for only one day of 30km instead of the whole 60kms, allowing more people to participate in the event. However, the biggest change was it's direction. Instead of focusing solely on breast cancer, this year you could direct your fundraising toward any women's cancers and as a result the event for 2010 has been official renamed to 'The Weekend to End Women's Cancers' and I'm thrilled by this development.

The organizers have also recognized the difficulty of raising the minimum $2,000 to participate in an time when the economy is suffering and although we still managed to raise a collective $11.6 million dollars across 4600 participants, they have introduced fundraising credits. That means that those of us walking next year will receive credits toward our goal for reaching milestones, such as the first $100 raised before October 29th or getting a new first time walker to sign up.

On Saturday, *gimp and I will be participating in the Weekend to End Breast Cancer. This will be my 7th year doing this walk and we couldn't have made it to Day one without the generous support of the deviantART Community.

On top of that, Sunday will mark my 3 month wedding.. monthiversary? hah! Hopefully, I'll survive probation and *gimp will keep me.

And then! Next week I'm on vacation, that's right a whole week I'm not doing anything just going to kick up my heels and do the ever so popular staycation thing

Apparently a system glitch resulted in a Spectrobes announcement to many of you appearing in your message center and refusing to let you delete it.

As my name was attached to the announcement, rather than being logical and reporting an obvious glitch to the help desk, some people decided to issue "payback" and started spamming me with harassing commentary and unflattering names.

Since then, most of these people have read the status post about the issue and some have gone so far as to apologize for the previous abuse on my page.

However, I feel this is destructive behavior and we need to re-establish a few things. Firstly, yes I have a $ and I do quite a bit on this site but at the end of the day there is a lot of cogs and gears and code that can cause countless things to occur. We have protocol for dealing with issues that involve people who notice something 'odd' first checking the status forum here and if they don't see their issue address there, contacting the help desk so they can look into it.

Abusing the first available staff member or screaming at the person with their name attached to these incidents is unfair and not very community like. I think it's very obvious I'm not going to issue ongoing spam into your message centers intentionally, and if it's not, it really should be.

A little courtesy on everyone's part can go a long way here. I resolve to remember that each of you is a live human behind a computer screen and I hope you can afford me that same benefit.

I am victim to chronic insomnia. The second my mind has something to hold onto, my OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) kicks in and I go through bouts of massive insomnia. It's not all bad, I get a lot of work done I find time to do crosswords or read when I'm too tired for work but unable to sleep, and that's where I found myself last night.

After moving almost a year ago, I've been saying I wanted to go to the library and get myself a card. I love the library. I love the smell of books, I love the adventure of seeking the perfect one out and I love just sitting there for hours enjoying the quiet experience.

However, until Monday, I just didn't give myself the time. It was magical really, receiving my new card for my new city library and pouring through the shelves in search of that gem.

I decided on a book called "The Last Chinese Chef" by Nicole Mones. Some of you may recognize the name, as she's also the author of "Lost in Translation" (some of you may have seen the movie )

I opened the pages to my new adventure for the first time last night, despite having taken temporary possession of it on Monday. I thought I'd read a few pages, after all, I have to return it eventually! Had to get started. What I didn't expect was to be instantly immersed in a fantastical world of food, philosophy, culture and so much more. I was unable to put the book down until I read the very last page around 3:30am.

It's been a while since I've been taken some completely by a literary exploration and I highly recommend delving into the pages of "The Last Chinese Chef". I'll warn you though - it may leave you feeling hungry

I wish I could remember who said this, and tonight google isn't helping much (I know.. unbelievable)

But the general idea was:

The traits that annoy us in other people, are the things we are unhappy with within ourselves.

I think this is an interesting thought and I don't know that I agree with it all the time. However, I can think back to people who have really gotten under my skin and I can see how this can relate. I'm not perfect by any stretch of the imagination and it's hard sometimes to come to terms with things about yourself, you feel need some work.

However, a while ago, I coined myself as an ongoing "Work in Progress". I am my life's masterpiece and I'm trying to learn more from negative and positive experiences, as opposed to blindly reacting.

Things happen for a reason I think.

So, what are your thoughts on the adage - "The traits that annoy us in other people, are the things we are unhappy with within ourselves." ?

We're being philosophical tonight!

Well in it's full version, it stands for "Tin Foil Hat Wearing Drama Llama Brigade" and it was coined on behalf of my friend =evile33 and in her honor, I had some versions of said Llamas made for her to spread and use as she sees fit.

The age old "Us vs Them" mentality is one that generally has a pretty clear black and white separation for me.

"Us" is usually the little guy. The people rising against the 'man' who obviously equals "Them".

However, on deviantART, this is a completely grey area for me and as such it makes the frustrations we feel, the arguments we have, the butting of heads.. that much more emotional and painful.

On one hand, the premium members, the logged-out members, the non-premium members, the seniors.. one would probably say, you are the 'Us'. As 'Us', seems to apply to the community.

That would mean that the administration would therefore, be "Them"

Here's my problem though! I'm an artist. I post my life's work, my personal masterpieces on this website for all of the same reasons the 'Us' group does, but I also get a paycheck and have a $ beside my name.. so am I 'Us' or 'Them'?

Further to that, what about volunteers? Certainly they don't get paid to rally for deviantART but they tend to get lumped into the 'Them' spot a lot due to their passion and commitment for the community.. doesn't that make them 'Us'? as well?

Confused yet?

Let me make it worse. As a paid staff member, myself along with $chix0r are in charge of "Commmunity". That means that we weigh heavily into each decision, enhancement, and change - with how we feel the community will respond. Sometimes we're right and sometimes we're wrong (Granted you try being right with 11 million people ) but we always respond with what we feel is the community's best interest. That would mean that the opinion of 'Us' is considered and weighed in and, even after a change launches, the response and reaction of 'Us' can cause very long debates and discussions among 'Them'. That would imply that 'Us' has more power than letting on.. so does that mean 'Us' is 'Them' as well?

See what I mean? It's a bit muddied no? We don't have a solid line that divides us for a reason. We're a community and a business, we are a business that is a community and a community that is a business. We are not a regime, we are not a hippie commune - we fluctuate between extremes quite often. We're growing.
