So, as some might have noticed from the stamps I've made, I'm currently in a class that has me staying at a hotel for several weeks, including over halloween. So, since I'm not home, I didn't plan on making any costume. However, a group of us in the class decided we'd throw a party for the hell of it, so on Thursday night, I realized that I was costume-less.

I always make my own halloween costumes because it's much more fun and you can be anything you want to be, you don't have to rely on finding one in a store.

And if any of you have ever tried to buy a girl's halloween costume, you'll know that they come in: skank, ho and wench (if it's a pirate/beer maiden costume). My particular favorite brand of these are the Playboy costumes (check out Spirit Halloween Store if you don't know what I'm talking about). The pictures of the costumes are on Playboy Bunnies! 99% of the time, the person who buys them is not going to look like that!

And lord knows, no one wants to see me in a costume like that - they're liable to light themselves on fire and throw themselves out a window

So, here I am with no costume, no sewing machine and no time. Oh, and no sewing store within about 2 hours.

So I'd seen duct tape prom dresses before and =DuckTapeBandit's Queen of Hearts dress, and I thought, "I bet I could make a decent duct tape costume." Problem is that they recommend having a pattern, and I was 2 hours away from the nearest sewing store.

I wound up making a duct tape poodle skirt (pictures to be posted tomorrow after I get people to take them tonight). This involved a lot of duct tape, a set of who-shot-the-couch sheets, and a rudimentary compass done using a shoe string and a sharpie.

Seriously, scientists should never be allowed to learn how to do crafts. I actually used the equation c= 2*pi*r to figure out the radius for the waist hole based on how big my waist was.

And then made a compass....

I think I'm actually embarrassed by my own nerdiness

Oh, fight, fight, fight....

I often say that the fastest way to make people enemies is to talk about politics or sports, but if I were absolutely honest, that could probably be amended to include your operating system.

And then we'd get the camps for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

I am a Mac user. I've used Macs all my life; I'm comfortable with them, and I just like the way they're set up. If you like your Windows machine better; that's excellent. Just don't call me an idiot for liking my Mac, and I'll show you the same courtesy.

On a side note, I feel the same way about religion. Feel free to worship in your own way as long as you're not hurting other people or trying to shove it down my throat.

Anyway - there is a point to this story, I swear - here is my one solid reason for why I love Macs. Last Sunday night at about 5 pm, my computer stopped booting up. I kept getting a gray screen saying "Please restart your computer."

Apparently, my computer couldn't remember the fact that I'd already restarted at least 50 times.

To make matters worse, I was headed on a 7 week trip that was not going to be anywhere near an Apple store on Monday morning.

So, I called up the Apple store, discovered they were open until 6 pm on Sundays (and I live about a half an hour away). I promptly stuffed my computer into my backpack and scampered across the city in hopes that they would have someone free.

When I got there - at about 5:30 - they put me on the list and sent me back to the Genius Bar, where one of the Geniuses (Geniusi?) looked at me, said "Are you waiting?" - there were at least three people on the list before me, but none of them seemed to be around - and took a look at my computer.

Not only did he fix my computer, but he stayed over a half an hour late in order to make sure it got completely fixed and never tried to rush me along or take short cuts to get it done faster.

And it was FREE! Free! I didn't know anybody gave anything away for free anymore, let alone computer help. I had my wallet out and everything. AND it's always free unless you need hardware. Then they charge you for the hardware, but not for the time.

I. Love. Macs.

Come on, can you imagine getting this kind of service with a Windows machine? I wouldn't even know where to go. Best Buy and the Geek Squad? (1) You need an appointment. (2) You're definitely going to have to pay for it.

I'm still shocked and amazed. Thank you so much Apple and Genius Bar - I would be dead if I was here without my computer

Unfortunately, I don't really have enough time during the week to work on the multi-chapter stories (it takes me forever to get the chapter right, and if I do that, I won't sleep). In celebration of my return (woohoo! yeah, I know it's more exciting to me), I'm sending out a call for requests. So one of the higher-ups in the org that I work for sends out an e-mail weekly or bi-weekly about what he's doing, thinking, etc etc. This particular one was about a trip that he took to LA, and he was riding around in a van with several other big-wigs when they spotted a store called:

Aniki: Raw and Elegant

Anybody else think 'What, Itachi?' ((Aniki = big brother = what Sasuke always calls Itachi in his memories))

Anyway, so the guy writing this e-mail didn't know what it meant and there was apparently much speculation about the nature of the store. In the end, he wound up pulling out his blackberry and looking it up to discover that it meant 'big brother' (as most of us have already realized). Turns out the store is a high end clothing with jeans for $260, and so forth.

But the funniest thing is that this guy has called dibs on the word and wants to use it as a project name. In fact, he's thinking about calling his mentoring program this.

All I can think is, 'Um, mentoring with sharp, pointy objects and mangekyou sharingan? Something tells me that ain't gonna work....."

Anybody want Itachi to be their mentor?

So, my husband and I are in Border's this morning, wandering through the digital art section, and he goes: 'Hey, hon, look, How to Draw Manga.'

Now you have to understand that my husband does not 'do' anime (even though I've managed to get him completely hooked on Bleach, mostly hooked on Naruto and pretty interested in Death Note), and he teases me mercilessly about it whenever he gets the chance.

I turn around, about to make some rude comment about not picking on me, and catch a glimpse of the cover, which says:

'How to Draw Manga: Drawing Yaoi'

I almost snorted hot chocolate out my nose. Because what you also need to understand is that my husband 1) does not know what yaoi is and 2) read part of 'Running Away From Others' (one of my fics) and, at about the same point the Naruto says 'Wait, Kakashi-sensei's gay?', turned to me and said "Wait, Kakashi's gay?!' - I had apparently destroyed his whole Naruto world view.

So needless to say, he had no idea what he had just pointed out to me.

If I wasn't so embarrassed by the prospect of having it lying around the house, I probably would have bought it (the collection of facial expressions was priceless......)

All in all, it was vastly amusing.
