Talk about a surprise!!!! I can't say enough about Deviantart, I think it's the best thing on earth! Really flattered to wake up on my BIRTHDAY and find a daily deviation! I really love the support and the inspirational spirit that is found here. Unfortunately, with my work and personal life, I just couldn't keep up with Deviantart (updating and such) but I did pop on occasion to see what my peeps were up to

I will start this new year off right! I'm gonna focus on updating and sharing my art with you wonderful people again! I certainly haven't forgot about this place!! Sculpting is certainly were it all began for me, and working at a job that is nothing but satisfying is all I can ask for!!!!!! I'm so appreciative of life and what it gives. Thank you so much for liking my work enough to give me Daily Deviation, and it couldn't have come on a better day!

Some news on my end (part of the reason why I've been absent from here)is that I got engaged recently!

Yes, to a wonderful, talented amazing guy that (well come to think of it) I MET HERE ON DEVIANTART in 2005!!! That's right, this place isn't only for inspiration, you met so many people...someone who may change your life forever!

So I have to say, THANK YOU WITH THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART!!!!!!!!!!! If it wasn't for this place, I wouldn't have the best job in the world nor the perfect man for my life!

Totoro Forest Project is online!!!!!!!!!!!!!


So you recall the sculpture of the Alien guy I sculpted..the one trying to grow the plant? I told you it was for a charity auction, but I didn't give much detail about it. Well....The time is now!!! Here's your look inside this wonderful project that Dice Tsutsumi and a few others organized to preserve the Sayama Forest in Japan!!! (also known as Totoro Forest where director Hayao Miyazaki got the inspiration for his character “Totoro.”

Here's what the auction entails:

"Over 200 top international artists from animation, illustration, and comics are donating artwork especially created for this cause.
On September 6th 2008 Pixar Animation Studios will be hosting an art auction event featuring all these fantastic pieces of art. All the proceeds of this fundraiser will benefit the Totoro Forest Foundation.
On top of the auction we are producing a wonderful art book of the auction pieces and ... an exhibition at the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco."

So I'm learning Zbrush now..and I'd like to share with you my first head I sculpted in z brush (granted, not very good...and pretty rough for working on it for 30 mins) I will most likely change the category to my scraps...so if you want to follow the beginning of my journey with Zbrush, look there!

Practice enhances the skills I'm definitely practicing! Great stuff to be had!

For those who don't know what zbrush is, it was initially designed as a painters program, that turned 3d. Basically it combines the 2d realm with the 3d realm like 2 1/2 D

I didn't realize it until I saw the wonderful comments/faves!...The DD was for my Horse and Jockey sculpture, the one that means very much to me! Thanks for recognizing it!

Being here for almost 5 years now, I've seen and experienced so much change and growth with you guys! And I'm glad I can share it with you...it's definitely an amazing place to be! Not to be cliche...I've said in the past, this is the best place for inspiration! I'm proud to be apart of this community and hope you guys continue to enjoy producing the amazing art!! Be as motivated as you can be!

I could write a novel on my experience in Paris..but let's just say that Paris is incredible! All the hype and amazing stories I've heard about Paris kind of made me worry that my expectations would be too high and that my journey there wouldn't be nearly as people mentioned. However, it was all that and more!! it exceeded my expectations...the experiences was so amazing, and it wasn't even the main attractions that made it, it was the little encounters with random people, the cute cafes and living the life of Paris for 9 days!

I met someone here on Deviantart that really made my trip that much more enjoyable!!! Check her out at: [link] She was nice enough to show us around, shop with us, and share her stories living in the Paris life. Very inspiring! She made us special souvenirs, which were caricatures of Anastasia and me. Such a surprise, considering she only had a day to do it! Wow...check it out!

Also met two very nice artist randomly walking down the street of Paris with Anastasia...we all started talking and one of the guys, Richard, invited us to a restaurant (where he worked as a magician) While people eat, he goes around doing magic tricks for entertainment! It was quite "magical" to watch. Good times all around!

Oh and a cute little place that I thoroughly enjoyed was a book store called Shakespeare and Company....anyways yeah, great place!!

Mike Defeo's sculpture show was a huge success! A big turn out and the happiness on Mike's face was such a nice thing to see! He did it, his first show and in PARIS! How amazing is that. I know there were a few people interested in buying his work, I'll give you updates as I get them!

I also met the most amazing, talent in Paris. His name is Gerald!! [link] He works at the studio called Xilam Animation studios in Paris, creating wonderful animations! I got to visit the studio and met even more talented artist that I had the privilege to hang out with around Paris. Gerald really welcomed us to Paris and made it like home for us! Thanks to you!

Like I said, I could write a novel about all the experiences I had, but I should leave it simple. Thanks guys for making my trip memorable!!!

Hope you guys out there in the deviantart world are having a wonderful time in life! Keep smiling and try to think positively...You guys are amazing artist and such inspirations as well! Thanks for all the support, it truly is the best art community ever!

I'm sorry I've left you for so long!! I've been working hard on TWO sculpts...that one of the girl on the stool holding the coffee cup (by David Cabrera-About halfway done with her) and another sculpt (my OWN design and idea) O_o is for a charity auction...more info on that later! It's been crazy, but so much fun! I hope to post them....soonish, I know I always say that, but this time I will.

I would have posted the sculptures I worked on for the movie "Horton Hears A Who", but Fox/Blue Sky wont allow any work from the movie for websites/portfolio purposes unless it was approved with appropriate copyright messaging. Ah well..maybe I can work something out.

Other than that, thanks for those who saw Horton!!! We all appreciate your support and glad you liked it...I've received some great emails!

It's A Wrap!! Horton will be playing in 3,900 theaters across the nation tomorrow!! FRIDAY is opening weekend for Horton and we are all excited to see what you guys think!!

Hope you all get watch it opening weekend and support the movie and love the movie and enjoy the movie every bit!!

Heeey everyone!! Gaaah, I had this journal already typed out, and then the internet crashes!!! grrr, okay, so anyways How's everyone been! Its a new year, anything new happen thus far?

As the title says, I have a question/challenge for you fine folks! I fell in love with this drawing by David Cabrera [link] and so I started sculpting it, however, I don't want to officially delve into it, until I can ask permission. I tried sending a private message on cgSociety, but it wouldn't allow me access. Which leaves me to ask if you know him or have any info I could use to contact him? It would be of great help

Also, who's all going to SDCC this year? July 24-27 We should figure out a meeting place for the deviants and maybe to have dinner or something Lets try to make something happen! Looking forward to it!

I hope everyone's enjoying their new year! I wish the best of luck, health, and happiness to you and your family!

For me, my new year is going smoothly (knock on wood). This year, I want to do something different than just random sculpting commissions. I really want to keep focused on one thing...which is going to be a big task for me (because I'm A.D.D. most of the time) haha. So this one task I'm talking about is...........making a business sculpting WEDDING TOPPERS. My friend and I are tag teaming to create the best ever wedding toppers in town.

I want to announce that (beginning in early April) my amazing, talented, co-worker/ friend Rafael Zentil [link] and I will start taking request for wedding toppers.

How it works: He will design the caricatures based off the front, 3/4, and profile pictures you send to him. From there, I will take the designs and sculpt the caricatures. More will be explained in a later journal, this is just to announce the plan and see who is interested out there. Let me know and we will make it happen!

In other news, the movie "Horton Hears A Who" [link] which I had the privilege of working on, will be playing in theaters MARCH 14, 2008!! I hope everyone can see it!

Other than that, things around my neck of the woods have been quite nice! Just loving life and all the people that surround me!

Just wanted to let everyone know that I'M alive and well! hahah Its been a looong time since I've updated this thing OR even stopped by to say hello to all you wonderful people!

I'm still working/enjoying sculpting at Blue Sky and of course loving life out side of Blue Sky.

I just wanted to say that I'm taking a break from my personal projects and focusing on other things right now. I DON'T, however, want to take a break from seeing such amazing work here on DA and I DO look on here occasionally for the best inspiration ever!

Thanks to everyone for the lovely comments on my work. I will be posting something soon I promise!

So, what have you guys been up to while I was gone?

For me, I've been extremely busy this past month. I recently picked up a side job that consist of airbrushing maquettes. I also get to learn more about molding and casting techniques at his studio, which means more copies of sculpts in the future I go directly after work from (7 to midnight-ish) every week and even work on the weekends. I'm exhausted! so I haven't been able to keep in touch with you guys. However, I'm making great money, and I'll buy you all a round of beers/soda/pop what ever you drink!

As the title says, Noguchi? Who, what is that you say? This is an amazing masterful modern time, Japanese American sculptor of marble and slabs of slate along with traditional calligaphic drawings and decorative lamps. (that was a mouth full) I had the pleasure to see his work locally in Astoria, NY this past Sat. I read his book and saw the pictures of his work, but seeing the grandness of his work in real life was something else! If you live in NY and have interest in seeing the exhibition, let me know, I'll give you more info about him and the location!

Today is the day The Simpsons movie comes out! I'd definitely recommend seeing that movie, not only because its a hilarious movie, but because there is the first ever Trailer of Blue Sky's movie, "Horton Hears a Who!"

Hey there! Wow, its been a while...haha I always write that in the opening, ah well

Anyways, I wanted to share with you fine folks a few fun things (a little alliteration for ya) that I've been up to lately!

Last year at SDCC I got offered a small sculpting part for DC comics at their talent search event and gave me a project to sculpt a cat accessory for their cat woman figure. I was so excited to get this opportunity! It finally came out so take a look! [link]

Mean while at work, I've been very productive with a sculpting class I started after hours little while back. I have a few people who are sculpting with me after work everyday of the week. They are so amazing and really fun to work with, but I really want to talk about my friend Diana's work. She made this beautiful child head sculpt and will be posting soon on her blog. She's not only a very talented person in sculpting (considering this is her first time sculpting ever) She is an incredible photographer...again, she is just now learning how to do this as well. She is the most muli-talented person if I've ever met one!

Wow, what a vacation! I don't know where to begin, I want to share my experiences with you guys (even though it might bore you). But seriously...its not just for you, but for me! I just realize that its nice to document my experiences here so I can look back and remember my journey! Enjoy to those who read on

I spent most of my vacation in San Francisco, where I explored many places.

The Golden Gate bridge was beautiful despite the extreme wind and chill! [link] We stopped off on a side area by the bridge where there was a vacant military area over looking the bridge, fascinating!

I did a lot of shopping in SF. Haight St was one of the coolest places! the environment was so different than most areas I've visited. I would say its like boulder,Co...but its much more intense. Definitely the hippy town of hippy towns. This is were I purchased a few expensive incents and an inexpensive beautiful leaf drawing/painting pad! Shopping is always fun when there are small hippy stores and bizarre people walking around you! (maybe I shouldn't say bizarre, just creative maybe ) It was sad though to see this small town in a way...there were so many homeless people outside of shops, which had clothes priced in the thousand dollar range! Strange how there is so much disparity in life.

There was also many great foods I tried for the first time (even though I'm sure I could have experienced them in NY) Its nice to experience something new in new places I guess. I went to Japan town (that had cute shops with cute nicnacs and japanese candies) we went to a restaurant in the japanese market area and tried my first salmon roe. The taste caught me off guard because it pops in your mouth and the liquid inside of the little balls overwhelms and coats your mouth with a unique flavor...it wasn't bad, but it's something I would have to get used to it. And then there was Vietnamese food.....incredible. There were these weed type plants that were served with a bowl of pork, broth and rice and a whole bunch of different type of spices. The plants (these were freshly cut plants with leaves, stems and all) gave the food an exotic flavor, something I've never tasted before. Amazing. If you haven't tried Vietnamese food I would recommend it!

Then it was off to explore San Mateo! Wow, this place is absolutely gorgeous! The weather couldn't be more perfect. I got to tour a new game company called UIPacific Games. The amazing talents there were very nice in welcoming me to there little cozy world. We all went out to lunch, leading to dessert which was something I've never had the privilege to taste. Tapioca milk tea! Wow, I loved it! I've heard some don't really like the tapioca part, but it was interesting to drink liquid and then suck up something very chewy and slimy with it. Yum!

I have to give my kindest thanks to Hoon for being the most amazing tour guide ever! He really made the trip memorable! I also got a tour of Hoons art studio in San Jose. Again meeting the most amazing people! I think that's the best part of going somewhere new, meeting so many people and effecting their lives in some way or form! There were lots of artist in this studio warehouse who do Graphic design to photography to oil paintings to music! One artist I got to meet just signed up for DA recently...go check his work out at: [link] Also during my stay here, I got to do my first photo shoot with a guy name Thinh. So talented and a nice guy to boot. He basically does beautiful panaramic photographs of cities around the world and never really ventured in portrait photography until now. He decided to take photos of all the artist in the building so he could show the growing potential of the artistic community where they lived. The photo shoot was focused around traits of artists (what really makes you unique as an artist) My trait=my hands (since I was a sculptor). My fingers in particular, are very long and crazy in all honesty so we did a bunch of pics with my hands in weird poses. That was a very fun experience to say the least..

Wow, I haven't been keeping up with this "journal every friday" schedule. Sorry for leaving you guys for so long! Nothing new on my end...just working on a few projects that I can't wait to share with you guys!

I'm heading to San Francisco, California next friday..sooo excited for a much needed vacation. I'll try to take pics and post them in my scraps for those interested. And I might be heading back to California in July for SDCC. I'll keep you posted if I decide to go.

Have you ever explored something that seemed so ordinary, but once you delved into it, it becomes fascinating? Saturday me and a friend went to Lyndhurst, a place of beauty *cue violin music here*. This place is where a gothic revival mansion lives..I've never been to a mansion before and for that matter never thought it would be interesting to tour, but once there, I was in awe of how much art went into making this huge place!

Their was a place specifically for an oil painting gallery.Which was so incredible to see the amount of paintings..it was like being in a museum! Mostly all the walls, and ceilings were hand painted by professional artist to make the wood look like stone work. Really impressive! If it wasn't mentioned, I would have never thought it was wood. And the sculptures in there were so inspiring! Some marble work and some bronze..fire places and wall mantels were decked out in beautiful sculptures. Why can't houses today have this luxury? hehe

Well I just wanted to share this amazing place with you...Something that seems ordinary, but has a lot of history behind it..very interesting!

Oh, in other news, I currently donated one of my sculpts..it will be in a Charity art auction. Go here for more information about the auction [link] The organization is Emergency usa..[link] I'm proud and honored to be a part of this special event!

Also started sculpting on [link] for Going to be so much fun to work on...hopefully will have it done soon And working on a sculpture of a character from a children's book that Vince Nguyen created (Super funny and great friend/talent) [link] Will share that with you soon! Stay tuned!

I love music! It keeps me in such an energetic mood, especially when I sculpt! I feel that music is time. Meaning when you listen to particular songs, it automatically sets the mood that you were feeling when you initially heard the song. (at least for me) It brings back lots of memories, some sad, and some amazing! But all in all, music really sets the time in which I remember/feel things and its great!

Man, I don't know about you, but I'm exhausted with working...its fun, but sometimes I feel like I'm missing out on so many things because I'm just sitting at home or the studio, working. I'm motivated, yes, and I have passion for what I do, yes and I LOVE every bit of it!! I just need to remember there's an outside! I'm going to Central Park today, just to breath the air, and walk around the beautiful environment and think about all the wonderful things life has to offer.

I hope you guys do the same...don't get too caught up in work that you forget to enjoy the outside, especially since summer is sooo close (in fact some places, I'm sure, feel like summer already) Relax people!

I have some pretty exciting plans for the up coming months. I'm trying to plan a trip to California around June to visit my good friend, partner and crime.... who is planning on a small art show. Its still in the works, but it would be nice to get out of NY for awhile. I've been here in NY for almost a year and a half and really haven't been out of the state except for the trip to SDCC which was pretty amazing! I feel a little trapped! Oh...I'm customizing a Munny doll, for an art show in Anaheim, California as well! Stay tuned, I will post pics of it soon.

Also, I would love to share with you an AMAZING artist that I've followed for 2 or so years...Victor Navone! He just started a blog, and has some beautiful animations and tutorials, as well as interesting articles, interviews and more... that you should check out!

I went to Barnes and Noble today to relax and drink some coffee...It was a really pleasant day actually! I love to walk around and watch the different people live their everyday lives...As I was walking through the book store, I ran into my next door neighbor who's an older lady (maybe in her 70s) As I walked passed her, I noticed she was reading a book in the "for animal lovers" section. I knew about a month ago she had to put her dog asleep..and I could tell she was tearing up (but she was trying to hold the tears back) I stopped and waved to her as she looked up, but I could tell she didn't recognize me. So I continued walking, and after a few seconds she said, "how are you" I turned around and said fine, and asked her the same question. She said, she's okay, then started crying telling me she had to put her dog to sleep. She almost made me cry, but I knew if I started crying it would be a mess. So I hugged her, and tried comforting her as best I could...I mean, that's all you really can do when someone is sad or had something special taken away. I don't know, it was just a sad moment...

I guess these type of situations makes you realize how precious life really is.

Other than that, things are good! Loving work still, learning a lot. Just started learning the 3d program Maya, its quite different, yet exciting to learn something new.

I have to share this amazing phenomenon with you guys, some of you might know this one but thought I'd share anyways, its interesting!

just passes by soooo fast! It seems like this year hasn't slowed down to have time for adventure outside of work, like meeting new people or exploring new places. This week was one week I was actually able to do that! Btw, I'm a day late on posting (so much for trying to post Fridays but here I am).

Monday after work I have a sculpting class (very small) at Blue Sky Studios where we all share ideas, inspire each other, and I teach/direct them a bit if they need help. Its soo fun and I learn a lot by doing it. Also, friends of my family (from Florida) came to visit NY, and I was fortunate enough to visit with them on Tuesday and Wednesday. I rarely get to visit my family very often, so having this opportunity to share my time with them was very special! We had dinner at a beautiful place called the Tavern on the Green...touristy but fun. The food was delicious (as most of NY restaurants/cafes are) and also watched my first musical show in NYC with them...Mama Mia. I have to say those are some talented people..to be able to sing, dance, act all at the same time and NOT mess up once. Gees and it was so energetic, I think I found my new interest this year

I went to do my taxes this morning, and when I went outside, NY looked like a different place! There was about 3 feet of snow piled up on all sides of the street..impossible to walk. It was like an obstacle course, and by the end of trying to dodge the piles of snow you're feet were soaked But at least I got my taxes out of the way. Hope this is the last of the snow..can't wait for spring/summer to start!

Hey there People! Its been a while since I last updated this...in JANUARY! Man time passes by so fast now. As the the subject says, I'm going to update my journal every Friday...Whether its actually posting some art or just sharing some random topics with you, I want to try to update weekly..kinda like a blog only better hehe

What's new in the world? Any interesting stories you can tell me?

I have an interesting story...though very odd.

My phone died this week because it accidently fell into the toilet (don't ask) hehe So long story short, it didn't work...well it DID work, it only vibrated with a blue screen there was no hope for survival. I came home and my roommate said his phone fell into a creek, got water damaged and an indian guy told him to put it in a bowl of rice (supposedly the rice will suck the moisture out of things). So I put my phone into a bowl of rice, let it sit there for 24 hours and whala!! the damn thing works! So if you ever have water damage on electrical objects...put it into some rice. Don't hold me too it, might not work for everything hehe. Just thought I'd share that interesting find

Anyways.....
I have some new paintings I really want to share with you guys!!! Just need to scan them in and post 'em...hopefully this weekend. It's nothing special, just paintings of some apples. My friend Dice [link] is helping me with some cool techniques, so I should be pro in no time hehe

I'm still drawing..though frustrating, I'm still keeping with it.

As for sculpting, I've been really productive!! Finished that sculpture I told you about (the one for Robert MacKenzie [link]) So I will post that once its all sanded and painted. Hopefully this weekend.

Started a SELF PORTRAIT sculpture..dun dun dun...Its just a sculpture of my head (life size) and I've already used 6 pounds of clay and still need about 6 more pounds!! I'll share the progress of that with you soon!

Ooookaaay, I've been a bit out of it these last few weeks. Maybe because its the new year and its taking me a little warm up to get back my motivation or maybe its just because I've become lazy hehe.

Either way, I decided to get back to it! I'm building up my energy and getting ready to explore some new realms of the art field. Painting and drawing always intrigued me, mostly because I don't understand how artist do it, its so hard! But also because its so expressive and colorful! Gray (super sculpey) can get old after awhile (just the color, not the sculpting part) So, my next few pieces will be some sculpts, and also some (probably horribly done) paintings and drawings. Get ready for Alena's new methods of art

I'm currently doing a sculpt for a very inspirational artist Robert Mackenzie [link] who I have the privilege of working with at Blue Sky. You'll see that soon...

I've been carrying a sketch pad around with me, which is great when living in NY because there are very interesting people to draw and capture. Especially when taking the train to and from the city! I'll share some of my drawings with you from there as well.

On my free time, I've been listening to new music found by using [link]....music has become my hobby at nights, getting acquainted with really unique and rhythmic songs! Music is such a wonderful part of life!

Also, The blog idea has been riding in the back of my mind recently, but I'm not sure if I want to start something like that, especially when I have this great place to share my life with If I do start a blog...would it be worth it? What are your opinions? and what would be a good blog site to use?

For me, its not about getting the most detailed sculpts or masterful looking sculpts out there...its about having fun (which I always do) and expressing my emotions through each piece. That's the best thing I realized this year Keep on smiling with your artwork!

HELLO!!!

How are things going deviant artist????

Things are hectic for me...but I'm still alive. I just got my own apartment, two bedroom that I'm sharing with a co-worker, and working at the wonderful studio Blue Sky still!! I got hired on full time getting benefits as a sculptor's assistant! I can go to the doctors now hehe. Things are finally settling down a bit, and I can finally focus on my life outside of work

Also, got my first freelance project from DC comics! I hope I can share this information with you soon!

Hey there fellow Deviants!!!!!!

Where does time go? As you get older (not that I'm old..hehe), the days get shorter, and the years go by faster than a speeding bullet... O_o yeah..hehe. Annnnyways, I wanted to tell you how my life has been thus far....

I've been with Blue Sky Studios for about 9 months now! Man, its been the best thing in my life by far! Definitely loving where I'm at, and who I'm meeting! Life is just getting more interesting for me though....lets see....

I got back from San Diego Comic Convention last Monday, and boy was it a BLAST!! I went with my friend I met a lot of cool people, especially some folks from DA! Its soo cool to put a name with a face. I even had a few people recognize me from here, very interesting!

The people I got to meet were:

My client and amazing friend!! I want to work on another character of yours very soon!
I got to see the preview for Hellboy animated series..and saw cheeks give a very entertaining speech
Very nice and amazing artist! We will work together eventuallly
Fun times!
So amazing to meet! Wish I could have hung out with you more!
Great meeting you as well!

The shiflett brothers (they are sculpting gods!) So cool meeting them..they are my idols

Hi there…


Man, do I miss Deviantart…..I don’t have a computer anymore, so its rare to find time to write you guys.

Do know this, I’m alive and well…enjoying life to the max! Still working with the studio, and meeting some amazing people (as always).

For those of you who read my last journal, the book, “Out of Picture” is out and ready for purchase! Let me know if any of you guys are interested, and I’ll pass the info onto the crew! *note* there is no work of mine in this book, I’m just helping them out by spreading the word

MoCCA, [link] a convention that was on the 10 & 11 of June, was a blast! This is where the talented crew of “Out of Picture” made their first appearance with their book, and sold out! This past weekend was the official Launch party for the book and was a huge success as well! Congrats to everyone!

Well well well, look whom we have here, if it isn’t the DA squad!!! Love you guys to bits I have time for a small update of my life as of May 2, 2006

Well I took about 2 weeks off of work for a small vacation: one week to Colorado to visit family and a week spent in Cancun, Mexico…It was fun, but glad to be back. In Mexico got to swim with the dolphins!!! and go horse back riding...that was soooo cool! Although I got really sick…I think it was the food, water and other crazy stuff and knocked me out for the rest of the weeks of April…but the Ocean was beautiful! I’ll post some pics of it later in scraps!

I’ve been working hard at sculpting still, and love’n it! For those who went to see Ice Age: The meltdown…I hope you enjoyed it, and appreciate your support of the movie! We are doing quite well so far with sales, hope it continues, Blue Sky is only touching the tip of the ice berg..

I have been reading mostly all the comments you guys give on my pages/deviations/notes….THANK YOU A MILLION, for all the support! It goes to show how amazing you are! I haven’t been posting anything new, but yet you guys still keep in touch! Friends and gaining New friends is one of the best things about DA.

Now that I’ve been in NY for nearly 6 months now…I’ve been settling in quite well with work and friends! Setting up shop as some would say, and NY is actually growing on me..hehe. My co-workers are just amazing to hang with, so much laughing to share with everyone!

I started back reading my book again…The Taking…and its getting rather interesting! I don’t know why I’m sharing that with you, just running out of things to really update you guys on..hahah.

Um, what else? Oh, the saddest thing yet…..I had to give away my dog, Java! The reason was because, I was working all the time, and keeping my dog locked up in a small apartment all day wasn’t fair to her. So I had to keep her at home in Colorado where she has access to a doggy door 24 hours straight, in a huge backyard. I’m sure she misses me (and I her), but it’s a better life for her.

Can't wait for SDCC!!!

ICE AGE: THE MELT DOWN

Okay, well I finally found some time to sit down and write a small update as to what I’ve been doing lately!

Well to start off, as stated above Ice Age: The meltdown is coming out March 31!! So I hope you guys save the date and go see it opening weekend. I didn’t get the opportunity to work on this particular film, but I know tons of TALENTED people who gave it their all to finish this movie, so go watch their magic!!!! Hehehe

Secondly, Life is good, er no wait, Life is Awesome right now Still working my hands off at Blue Sky, doing some crazy sculpts for Blue Sky’s upcoming movie Horton Hears a Who, which will be out in 2 years…hahah 2008 so stay tuned I just sat in with a group of people and watched the directors talk about the movie and act out the whole story line, its going to be a BEAUTIFUL movie!!!! I’m excited can ya tell hahah

Okay, now on to more excited news!!!!

I’M GOING TO SAN DIEGO COMIC CON!!!! YAY! I’m just going to meet people, mingle, network, and yeah hahah Just to get out there in the industry and make contacts and enjoy my time in San Diego! I have my flight and hotel all paid for, so now I just have to wait! If anyone I know is going LET ME KNOW, I’m sure I’d love to meet you!!!

Howdy!! I just wanted to say hi and thanks for all the comments and feedback on my latest sculpts!!!! Again, it means a lot!

Welp here are a few things about me, I got tagged by and to do 30 or so questions about myself..and I just got around to doing them. So sorry to you guys for taking so long, shame on me! Welp hope you enjoy the weirdness of Alena More to come!

1) I used to play softball, was the pitcher
2) Fell on a glass table and sliced my right arm open, got 75 stitches. Doctor said if it was over an inch more, it would have cut my main tendons, veins and I wouldn’t be able to use my arm as well…I’m sooooo grateful that didn’t happen.
3) I eat fast food all the time, mostly wendy’s and mc donalds and never gain weight, I’m not complaining and I’m not proud I eat unhealthy…but its so good!
4) I have a dog named Java, she’s a miniature pinscher
5) My first job was at Mc Donalds at the age of 14, cleaning the lobby
6) My parents divorced when I was 14
7) Lived in Tampa, Florida until I was 12 then moved to Colorado…I loooooovveee Colorado!
8) Had my first family reunion two years ago (10 year from when I last seen them)
9) I did my first sculpting commission in Feb of 2005!! It was so fun!
10) I was in gymnastics for five years when I was 5-10 years old
11) I have long fingers, and can do many different tricks with them, some people know this..and think I’m a freak of nature..hahah
12) I can arm wrestle guys and win most of the time
13) I hate wet socks
14) I like coffee with 3 creams, 6 sugars…hey its great that way!
15) I’m the middle child
16) I really would love to visit Japan
17) I don’t smoke
18) The thing I’m most proud of is my desire to learn sculpting! I love it….and that I fully paid off my 2001 cavalier in 7 payments when I was 22.
19) I’m scared of dying
20) I can cross my pinky toe over my other toe!
21) I’ve been in a hit and run when I was 16, I was the runner…hahah, long story
22) I’ve never broken a bone
23) I’ve never been in a fight, never want to be
24) I absolutely loooooovvvveee astronomy!
25) I’m a hypochondriac, trust me, if there’s anything wrong with me, I think it will be the worst thing ever
26) I had braces when I was 16 and paid for them myself
27) Never knew DeviantArt could bring me soooo much happiness!
28) I live life as it comes to me, I don’t plan anything
29) I think things happen for a reason
30) I like to play scategories (a game)
31) I was born in Mississippi, I lived in Tampa, Florida; Broomfield, Colorado, Atlanta, Georgia; and Nanuet, New York
32) If you have a bad life, don’t sit back and say “WOE, not Whoa is me”, heheh I’m sure everyone has had struggles with life and it all depends on how you look at life and what you do with it! Get up and do something!

Hello fellow friends, amazing artist, and community! I’m back, and ready to rock DA’s world…well not really, but I want to share with you guys the reason why I’ve been so so quiet on DA this past month! Warning…a long read

Well, as you know my journey started off in Vancouver, Canada, where I met up with my friend Alan aka he and I explored Vancouver, went to Stanely Park (BEAUTIFUL) went to an aquarium, which was huge and full of life, and to a club. The thing about the clubs there, they require TWO ids O_o Your license and a credit card or something with your name on it. Crazy, but once we got in, it turned out to be pretty fun! Anyways, the week I spent there was great and very relaxing! I got back to Colorado the 16th, then left to New York the following day 17th. Busy Busy.

Then the best part of my vacation happened the 19th of December, a Monday! I started work as…….a sculptor’s assistant at Blue Sky Studios!!!!! **** [link] <<
First I’ll tell you how it happened, then I’ll tell you my experience thus far!

I was cruising on a sculpting forum one night, looking at all the cool sculptures on there, then I saw a posting by an amazing sculptor, Mike Defeo, of a job position opening up at Blue Sky, I read it, and it said:

Hi,
I'm looking for a part time sculptors assistant to help at Blue Sky Studios.
The tasks would be model clean up and prep for finish and casting of maquettes. Also photographing maquettes and misc shop tasks. Not a lot of sculpting but good experience for a begining sculptor.
$10 per hour.
Blue Sky Studios is in White Plains NY
Part time, 2 or 3 days a week off and on as needed.

So, immediately I responded to this opening! Sent him my portfolio of my sculpts, and told a little about me and my journey with sculpting. He wrote back, did a small phone interview, and I got hired on as a part time Sculptor’s assistant! WOW!! A dream come true just to be there, more less helping him out with some KILLER sculptures!

So I started the 19th of December working Monday’s, Wednesday’s and Fridays! Some of the tasks include: Me going to the “spray room” to spray the maquettes with primer, then take them down stairs to put putty on the cracks and crannies that happened from the casting, and then wet sand the areas off for a smooooooth finish. Once I’m done with that then I air brush the maquettes a final gray color, for the ultimate finish! I’ve also done some molding/casting, and got the privilege to actually SCULPT…..omg..hehe. I got to sculpt a large tree branch that a maquette will be sitting on! I got a lot of pointers from Mike D. on how it should look! I think it turned out amazingly!! And the best part is the Directors and Mike liked the style I gave this particular tree, they opened up more sculpting! So now I’m starting on some more tree designs. I just built an armature, sculpted and finessed my own model of a pretty kick ass looking Dr. Suess tree for Blue Sky’s up coming movie Horton Hears A Who!!!

I’ve learned an immense amount of things here at Blue Sky already thanks to Mike for all the important information! I’ve never met someone as helpful, and talented as him! You guys should check out his work, and some of the maquettes he’s done:: [link]

Hola! Como Estas? Muy bien, y tu? hehe

I wanted to let everyone know that I'm still working hard with sculpting and will be posting up a few sculpts soon, so keep your eyes peeled!

And...
I'm going on Vacation!!! To Vancouver and then to New York. If anyone lives in Vancouver and wants to meet up...let me know. I can see about meeting you!! I'll be there the 11th-16th of Dec. Then I venture to New York on the 17th of Dec. to spend Christmas and New Years there, and wont be back until Jan 7th. My plan in life is to meet as many people as possible; I think life's too short to stay in one area, and work your life away at a not so fun job..hehe I have things to do, people to see, and explore life when possible! hehe So it will be a small adventure for me, and I'll keep you up to date with how things go!!!

Sorry guys for no updates and for my lack of participation lately....been trying to figure a few things out in life, it turns out....its really hard to figure them out haha. So I just been taking my time, working on a few models, and looking for that next big thing that life gives out. Just trying to focus and find my place Sorry if I'm confusing you hahah I tend to do that sometimes!

Anyways, in other news, I have my cowgirl model, Brandy, coming out in a Magazine called Models Resource. It’s in the production to become a model kit, meaning it will be replicated and sold. Materials you will need: You can get all the material you need at Compleat Sculptor [link] (they ship internationally as well)

Clay (Super Sculpey or what ever you are using)"Gray Compound"
Armature wire 1/8th small, 3/16th medium, and 1/4th Large (bones of character)
Wire Cutters/Pliers
Wooden Plate (to stand the armature on)
5-Minute 2 part gel-epoxy and/or 20 minute Pro Poxy-get at home depot (to mend the armature together)
Rubber Tipped tool/Exacto knife/Spatula tools, rake tools [link]
Aluminum Foil (to bulk up character if needed)
Mesh Wire
Turpenoid
And your hands...


Clay Medium:

I use Super Sculpey for all of my models! They now sell already mixed gray sculptey sold at Compleat Sculptor [link] but if you can only get the regular pink Super Sculpey, then mix a block of black and white sculpey 3 into a pound of Super Sculpey. This is to make the medium gray, which allows you to see the flaws in the surface a lot better as opposed to the pink super sculpey where it's more transparent.

Armature:

Print out the 2d character out the size you want it. So if you want the model to be 9 inches, print the character out at 9 inches, etc. Then measure out with the armature wire against the 2d ref (for the spine of the character, length of the arms etc.) and use the epoxy to mend the wires together. If the base doesn't already have a hole, drill one or two as needed into the base. Once I have the lengths I need for the body, arms, and legs... I use liquid epoxy, pro poxy or both to mend the arm/leg wire onto the spine wire (let it cure) then pose the character how it is in the 2d character ref.

Here is a step by step progress showing how I start my model using the Motti Marloid model, there are other sculpt process in my scraps:

Blocking:

Blocking is something that is important in the structure/building of the model. This is the process to get the shape and width of the character. I cut up slices of clay and apply it to the armature....building it up slowly until the width, and shape is to my liking. (If you want it really precise you can use a surface gauge to measure out the levels of the features) If there are places that are very wide, then you can use Aluminum foil as a filler, then apply clay around that.

Once you have to shapes perfect, then you can start detailing.

Smoothing:

Smoothing can be achieved a few ways.... with rake tools, your handy dandy fingers, sponges, small spatula tools. Also using my rubber tipped tool to help me out in small places. Once all the detail is added..I go over the whole model with the turpenoid. I add this to the body and face with a paint brush, brushing a little on at a time...smoothing out rough edges and such.

Baking:

The final stage: I usually use a cookie sheet, and lay aluminum foil on the pan, and put the model still on the wood (yes you can cook the wood too) in the oven. Sometimes I use pieces of foil to prop the arms/legs up just incase it moves or shifts in the oven. Then I cook it for about 30 mins to a few hour at 240 degrees F, depending on size and width, and let it cool in the oven once its done firing.
