Today's entry is a fanart submission of Coraline, from the movie of the same name.

I recently got Coraline from Netflix. I hadn't even heard of this movie until it came out on DVD. When I saw that it was a Neil Gaiman story and directed by Henry Selick, I had to get it. I was not disappointed. It is *charmingly* creepy. Dakota Fanning and Teri Hatcher delivered excellent voice talent. This is now my favorite movie this year. I plan to buy it.

I do think Daveigh Chase would have been a better choice for Coraline's voice though. Dakota Fanning did well, but I think she was chosen more to draw in the kids than for her voice acting talent.

I'm sure most people on here know how hard it is to get things proportionate. It sucks.

If I do a face right and get it perfect, the neck is too small. Or the arms are too low, or uneven, or the legs are too long, or something it missing from the flow.

I'm not a perfectionist by any means, but I do not like ugly things. I've had to borrow other people's work to get an idea of how proportions work. I decided to buy a 3d posing program to avoid this problem in the future.
(it's nice not being a "starving artist")

Major breakthrough on this last piece. It borrowed heavily on the pose and even some of the wardrobe, but I was able to develop a shading style I'm really happy with. I'm hoping to refine it enough eliminate dark lines altogether, and only use shading to define borders. We don't go walking around with black outlines, so why should my drawings?
On the other hand, I do like outlines for some things, so I'll be balancing it out somehow...

Well, I didn't touch a pencil for eight months, but I've been wanting to draw again. Computers have always been kinder to me than the pen, so I looked into getting Adobe Illustrator...$600? No thanks. After some research, I discovered "Inkscape", an open source alternative. It runs on Windows, Mac and Linux, so I'm able to use it on both my laptop (WinXP), and my desktop (Ubuntu Linux 7)

After toying around with it for a while, I figured out what I was doing, and managed to complete the latest entry, a character titled "Ilska Myrd," after about five hours. I could have done it in about 3, but 2 hours were spent learning how to use Inkscape.

I can't believe it. I'm actually drawing again. I haven't drawn anything since I was in college.

Last time I tried anything serious, it took me six months to be happy with it. This time around was a lot easier. I got a sketch I was (mostly) satisfied with in two and a half hours. I still think it needs a lot of work, and my technique is still the artistic equivalent of an armless person trying to swim, but I'm glad to be trying again.

Since I'm new at this, I encourage critique. I know it's awful, please help me figure out why and how to improve.

It's in scraps until I get my scanner fixed (instead of photographing) and have it at least inked.
