I folded a very nice dragon from a gorgeous piece of gold foil by making some modifications to one of the dragons I designed last year. I added some box pleats around the edges to add some really nice detail to the head. I set the piece on my desk and went to find my camera. The batteries were dead, so I had to find some fresh ones too. Returned to my desk and the dragon was gone. In its place was a very happy cat with incriminating gold flecks in her teeth. Grrrrrr.... damn cat. I spent most of this weekend on that dragon, and I won't have time to even think about trying to recreate it until next weekend.

Yesterday I folded a beautiful fox. I used a piece of red foil paper that was so pale it was almost pink. Not quite a suitable color for the majestic and elusive fox, but it found the shape and form in flawless composition. The curve of the back, the swoosh of the tail, and the attentive ears all were in perfect imitation of the grace and elusive nature of a Vulpini.

Alas, I am not a photographer. I took dozens of pictures. I tried using different lighting, both natural and artificial. I tried every setting my camera has available. I even tried using different cameras, but to no avail. The elusive nature of the beast will suffer no picture to be taken.

This makes me sad.

There is as much history and culture tied to the name of my craft as there is to the art itself. Simply calling it "Folding" feels like they are generalizing the art form too much.

Maybe I'm being silly, but I've spent a long time getting my friends and family to take my art seriously and this just feels like a set back to everything I've tried to accomplish to get people to see the beauty of Origami.

I've been trying to finish Satoshi Kamiya's Ancient Dragon, and I've come to the conclusion that it just isn't possible with the paper I'm using. I've been using foil wrapping paper left over from Christmas, but its just too thick for something with as many layers as Kamiya's dragon. I've used tissue-foil a couple of times, but I want something with a more "presentable" appearance. While tissue-foil is easy to fold with, the final piece almost always looks like it was wadded up into a ball and then forced to take the shape of a dragon.

Anyone know of a good source for paper that might work for this model? I need to be able to make very large squares at least 50cm to a side. I'm not opposed to wet-folding, I know finding large pieces of foil-backed paper is rather difficult so I'm trying to keep my options open. Any help is appreciated greatly!

Sadako and the Thousand Cranes

One of the most famous origami designs is the Japanese crane. The crane is auspicious in Japanese culture. Japan has launched a satellite named tsuru (crane). Legend says that anyone who folds one thousand paper cranes will have their heart's desire come true. The origami crane (折鶴 orizuru in Japanese) has become a symbol of peace because of this legend, and because of a young Japanese girl named Sadako Sasaki. Sadako was exposed to the radiation of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima as an infant, and it took its inevitable toll on her health. She was then a hibakusha -- an atom bomb survivor. By the time she was twelve in 1955, she was dying of leukemia. Hearing the legend, she decided to fold 1,000 cranes so that she could live. However, when she saw that the other children in her ward were dying, she realized that she would not survive and wished instead for world peace and an end to suffering.

A popular version of the tale is that Sadako folded 644 cranes before she died; her classmates then continued folding cranes in honor of their friend. Sadako actually folded more than 1,300 cranes before her death. She was buried with a wreath of 1,000 cranes to honor her dream. While her effort could not extend her life, it moved her friends to make a granite statue of Sadako in the Hiroshima Peace Park: a young girl standing with her hand outstretched, a paper crane flying from her fingertips. Every year the statue is adorned with thousands of wreaths of a thousand origami cranes. A group of one thousand paper cranes is called senbazuru in Japanese.

The tale of Sadako has been dramatized in many books and movies. In one version, Sadako wrote a haiku that translates into English as:

I shall write peace upon your wings, and you shall fly around the world so that children will no longer have to die this way.

Apparently my CPU severely over-heated because of a break down in the thermal conductivity fluid that helps transfer heat from the CPU Processor to the attached heatsink. I may have fried the CPU completely this time and I won't be able to get it fixed until after the Holidays are over. I should still be able to respond to comments and leave comments for others, but I probably won't be able to upload any new pictures until I get my laptop fixed.

...so anyone know where I can get a good deal on a 2+ gHz Pentium M? Dell wants over $700 for the part alone. I may need a new 60 gB SATA HDD as well...

This is also going to cause a delay in the production of the diagrams and crease patterns I was creating for dragon I designed. I was nearly done with that project when this happened and the files were stored on the drive that has failed so two weeks worth of work are now a complete loss. I'm still planning on making some diagrams, but its going to take much longer than anticipated.

[EDIT: I removed the picture inserts because they aren't working. The pictures are available in my gallery though. I apologize for my lack of HTML skillz, as I was too busy folding paper to pay attention that day in class.]

I'm still not 100% satisfied with the design yet. I want to move the front legs forward and try to isolate the back edge of the wing to separate it from the hindquarters more. The variations shown above are mostly the same, except I was trying different things with the head and front legs. I've been trying to form a couple of spikes behind the head but the paper gathers heavily in that area and suffers from paper spread a little.

Unfortunately, I haven't gotten around to taking any pictures of it yet. I actually designed this dragon completely by accident, but I won't complain! I was suffering through the manager's Christmas dinner at some fancy restaurant with all my colleagues and peers from work feeling bored so I started folding my napkin. I was trying to pay attention to the droning speech the president of my company was making about how much he appreiated all the hard work from the management team, blah, blah, blah, when I looked down at what I held in my hand. At first I was going to wad the napkin up and throw it away because I had severely over-worked the paper, but I saw an interesting shape beginning to emerge so I started collapsing the paper along the creases I had already made. A few minutes later I was holding a bird base with four extra flaps in the middle. At that point I saw endless possibilities begin to open up, so I stuffed the napkin in my pocket to get back to later. The next morning I decided to combat a hang-over by disecting the strange bird base from the previous evening. After taking it apart I realized the base was fairly simple. Start with a blintzed square, then make a rabbit's ear on each corner, followed by a squash fold. From here you fold a bird base while allowing the flaps created earlier to stand out and away from the center of the model.

I'll try and post a picture or two tommorrow!
