What I learnt in Illustration this year:

Rules are ment to be broken:
often in a project you will get a set of rules. "only use a single colour", "no bigger then 4"x6"), etc. These rules are flexible. While you shouldn't set out to break them, you can often get away with a little (or sometimes a lot) of bending of the rules so long as it makes the image look good. But it's always good to check with your teacher before hand.

When in doubt, make it look good:
this relates to the last thing I learnt, but it's a little different. Sometimes there are so many crazy requirements on a piece that you just forget one of the requirements. "is this still life supposed to have 4 or 5 objects in it?", "were we supposed to use a pantone color or any old swatch we can find?". Well when in doubt just go with the one that will make the picture look better. maybe you'll be right and it will just be fine, but this way if you're wrong then you at least made sure you have a good looking piece and like I mentioned before. sometimes that's all you need.

Make Friends:
Not only is making friends a great way to establish contacts for when you're out in the real world but it also can take the edge off of an otherwise stressfull school year. No matter what was happening with school we always had our friday night movie nights, and that did more to keep me sane then pretty much anything else.

There are lots more, but this is the stuff that really comes to mind. The other stuff is currently all being repressed in my mind till I can recover with a night or two of sleep.

Also you may have noticed I have an @ now. all I can say is

i've been insanly busy lately so i have a lot of comments to reply to. so if you see me replying to something of an old comment then now you know why.

Welcome to the last couple of weeks of school.
not only is this usually a very busy time, but with the school strike we've lost at least a week (and with easter we lose a few more days) so overall things are really hecktic. add to that the fact that my psychology course has decided not to lighten up any of the load meaning I have a psych test on monday (Covering 4 chapters), 10 page essay due the following monday and then the final exam due the monday after that. blarg!
keep in mind I'm not in school for psychology but I'm in school for art. Psychology is nothing more then a government mandated course given to us art students so that when we get out of the program we are "well rounded students" instead of idiots who can draw pretty pictures.

wanna write my essay for me? 10 pages, due next monday, consumer psychology relateing to art and artistic styles, need a bibliography. Go do it! (make it good).

all I can say right now is BLARG!!!

Alive again.

I really must learn how to blog better. I mean there are people who do this every day, chronicalling every small event that happens in thier daily life, yet looking at my journal entries I have not posted a single journal in 2006 and it's already march! And let's be serious for a moment here. If I don't chronical my day to day life in a manner that future generations can access, then who will? certainly not you! and I wouldn't trust what you'd say about me anyways.

Soo.. march... march is spring time. It's already warmer here. I like warm weather.

I have some life drawing I could be working on and I need to mount my design work but otherwise I am compleatly and entirly done school till january. I think I might explode I am just so happy. Don't get me wrong, the stuff that I am learning is amazing and I've noticed myself getting better almost weekly, but the work load was getting pretty heavy at the end there.

now that I am done I am going to go over my comments I've gotten over the past week that I haven't replied to, and I'm going to reply to them. if you commented on someting this week and I never replied then don't hate me, I will be replying to it now.

So today is my 2 year dA Anniversary (the Cotton/China anniversary). My how time flies. It seems like only yesterday I was posting stuff like..

and now...

Not only have I grown as an artist but dA has grown a ton in 2 years too. I remember back when there was no dAmn (the only thing then was the shoutbox). And also, back then if you were smart and posted your art at like 3am then your work would be up on the "recent deviations" section of the main page for about a good 5 minutes. but as cool as it was back then, I still prefure all the new stuff and how much the community has grown too.

All I wanted to say is thank you guys for commenting and favouriting and watching. To make a cheesy one liner "I Came for the art, but I stayed for the friendship".

The idea is we increase the community love

You gotta pimp a person who is your shining example of good community spirit and love then you tag six people and they pimp someone and tag another 6 to build a great big circle of deviants talking about what makes this community great. what can I say about him... I'd like to point out that Gibby Doesn't actually comment, he writes essays that he pretends are comments. These mini-essays are far better then any mere comment could ever be. In a sea of "OMGZ I liky UR work" and "UR wrk r0x" you can always depend on Gibby to give a solid and well thought out comment on your works. and for that, I thank him.

Odds are if you have tried to contact me or commented on something I've done over the past week, it's gone unreplied. My appologies but I've been going insane with portfolio work for school. Tonight (and maybe tomorrow, depending on how much I can get done tonight) I will be powering through the comments and trying to reply to them all.
I will also try to work on something that I can post here.

Reading week is one week away. then I can actually do something for myself. I have been so tapped out for insperation since school started. Everytime I sit down to draw it seems like all I can think of is all the design or object drawing work I should be focusing on so I give in and just work on homework instead of painting something for my own desires. Oh well. This is also the reason I have been slow replying to comments. my appologies for that.

School is going well, for the most part I seem to have a decent class, with a handfull of people that I have a fair bit in common with and I hang out with in class. They are good people. The work itself is pretty simple and straight forward... except my object drawing class. It's really technical oriented with focus on straight lines and clean lines. And if you've ever seen my sketching in my scraps then you will see that "clean" really isn't my bag. I just want my C+ (pass) in object drawing and that will be the end of that.

This is a lot more "blog"ish then my normal posts. which is odd. Oh well.

now it's my turn to spread the pain and love.

1) I am not a morning person and those around me tend to take great joy in bugging me in the mornings.

2) I have done everything in my power to avoid working annoying jobs since my first job as a kid working at burger king.

3) Since then I have worked at 2 music stores, 1 comic book store, and I currently work Part-Time teaching Cartooning/Manga to kids. (so far, so good)

4) I have an addictive personality (which means if I find something I like I usually commit 100%, but it also means I have to stay away from certain things).

5) I use brackets and commas WAY too much when typing things out (like this).

6) I was once struck by lighting (or atleast something close to me was) while walking over a bridge in the rain. I had a huge headache and was dazzed for a little while.

7) I have mild allergies to penicillin, cats, and dog fur.

8) When I was a kid my parents never beleaved me that I was allergic to cats/dogs, and since then I lived with 2 cats and 1 dog for most of my life.

9) I had no front teeth for the first 12 years of my life. my parents had to have them removed when I was 2 because I drank too much apple juice

10) I have a scar on on my right wrist. Some people have assumed it was from a suicide attempt, it's actually from closing a 3 ringed binder on my wrist

11) I use the google search feature as a make shift spell checker. Even when using programs that have spell check (google just seems to be more accurate).

12) I have been told by more then one person that if I can't score a job in illustration then I should seriously look into a job as a voice actor.

13) when I was 14 I tried to get people to call me by my middle name (Alexander) but it didn't catch on.

14) I have stayed/lived in Florence (italy), Rome/Venice (briefly), Cocoa Beach (Florida), Quebec, Toronto, and about 4 different places around toronto (burlington x3, ajax, oakville, milton)

15) I like Florence and Toronto the most.

16) my favourite ice cream is Ben and Jerry's: Cherry Garcia

17) I like music with intelligent lyrics regardless of how the beat sounds.

18) I sold my first painting and I also scored my first paying commision through deviant art. So in many ways I feel like I owe dA for supporting me.

19) I rarely comment because I prefure to critique. Unfortunatly people usually don't like/want Critiques of thier work. They just want to hear it's good.

20) One time, I went to band camp....

the title of the file is called "He-man does 4 non-blondes". Some of you youngins might take this title the wrong way, but 4 non-blondes is actually the name of a band.

some pimpage of those who did me a favour and checked out *piratecore when I asked. the following is my favourite pics of the stuff they've done. For my next journal I will do something fun. Here is how it works. you reply/comment to this journal and I will go through your gallery and post my favourite of your work. if I can I will try to make a summery, but i make no promises on that. as it is I have a ton of comments that need replying too (i'm horrible for that).

at my current rate of whoring, I should reach 20k on monday/tuesday (assuming nothing crazy happens like server downtime or I get a daily dev). I'd like to do something nice for whatever watcher catchs or gets closest to my 20k (if a non-watcher gets the 20k then it will just go to the first watcher who claims it. that way we don't have anyone just swoop in and ruin it for anyone who actually watchs me). any ideas for something nice to do? keep in mind I have no money so I doubt it will be subscription oriented but maybe art or a picture orieneted? what do you guys think would be nice? or do you guys even care about these sort of things?

Call it a back to school sale or Nenimo needs to pay his Tuition sale or a whatever you want to call it sale

I went through all my prints and reduced thier prices by as much as 60% (some of the more expencive prints dropped from da's recommended $60 to well below $20). I'll keep this sale on till school starts (2 weeks) and then most prices will go up a bit (although not as high as they were before) and I will also clean up my print shop (aka delete some stuff, submit new stuff) so this might be the last chance for a while to get certain prints.

Most of my prints now have atleast 1 decent sized piece for less then $5, the biggest at about $20, and the smallest under $3. So support your lovable Nenimo and allow him to afford tuition and supplies for the coming school year... please

Also if anyone has anything they want to see me put up as a print just let me know. or if you want to buy a size or something odd (like a postcard or mousepad) that I don't already have up then again let me know and I'll see what i can do.

on a side note: for us youngsters we only have 2 weeks left till school? anyone have any comments on that? anything you plan on doing? or not doing for the next 2 weeks?

Something that bothers me a lot on deviant art is all the tracing that goes around on dA. According to the rules tracing is perfectly fine but it kinda goes against the spirit of it all when someone traces a piece and not only doesn't mention it but hints at the idea that thier work was infact not traced at all.

anyone with a decent eye can tell when someone is tracing. lines look wabbly and often connect in wierd places when tracing. Also one of the easiest ways to tell if someone traces lots is if thier photoshop pieces are all professional quality pictures of people and yetthier pieces in pencil all look like they were made by a 5 year old.

with that said, tracing serves a purpose. when I was first learning to draw I used to trace all the time as a way of figuring out the shapes of whatever it was I was drawing. But I would always take out a new piece of paper and try drawing the picture again using my picture and my shapes as reference.

I don't know... personnaly I would never post up a traced piece and call it a finished product. Unfortunatly I am not the patron god of art who dictates what people can and cannot do.

sorry about this, I just wanted to rant.

My stance on the °jark-gate situation:
Scott is a great guy, and I hope he gets his title/rank back and can atleast be kept on staff for consulting purposes. This was his baby and for that alone I hope he can stay.

With that said though, most of the people who are speaking out the loudest are people who are using this whole situation as a way to make a name for themselves. Lots of these people never knew who jark was a week ago and they never cared. now they take up slogans like "If I get banned, I get banned for jark". The truth is that you are not getting banned for jark, you're getting banned for doing stupid shit like spamming, flaming and making threats. If you want to protest or make yourself heard then do so in an intelligent manner.

I would like to keep the jark talk to a minimum on my page. please don't spam my page or journal with slogans or anything like that. In the event that I do one day make a jark related posting. then try to keep things civil and constructive.

Today for reasons I won't get into I have really been feeling depressed. Normally when I feel depressed I turn on some music and it helps me get my mind off things for long enough to feel better. But today I just seem to be in some funk that makes me feel like i've listened to all my mp3s a million times and I need something new. So I need some recommendations for music to listen to.

Hook me up with some high energy music to get me out of this funk, or some slow music to allow me to wallow.

My musical tastes are pretty open. some bands on my play list right now are Weezer, Ben folds, Postal Service, Death Cab for cutie, letters to cleo, Weakerthans, Muse, the killers, the von bondies, yeah yeah yeahs, Decemberists, Cake, beck, Black eyed peas (older stuff, before they got that new chick), gorillaz, Del the phunky homosapian, K-os, and a lot more.

There is a big debate on the forums about the current quality of the Daily Devs that deviant art currently has been displaying. The general opinion is that too many Shock value pieces, and too many pieces of those who are already famous are being picked. Also people have brought up the idea (and some proof) that atleast a couple admins have been abusing thier power and daily deving people they know in real life. what do you think of the current status of the daily devs? Personnaly I find they are very hit and miss, and a lot more miss then hit. Some Admins seem to really have a grasp on Daily Devs. Others seem to go for shock value nudes, snap shots, famous artists who already have atleast 2 other daily devs under thier belts. But hey, I have no idea about the inner workings of the daily dev system so I really can't on if this is the admins fault or the daily dev system itself. Either way I know I would prefure if whatever the problem was, it was fixed.

what are your opinions on daily devs?

PS. all this talking about daily devs has got me wondering. anyone ever recommended me for one?

Now I need to fool some people with money because my tuition payments are getting really stupid. Anyone want any commissions? Sorry to my watchers for not really commenting over the past 2 days. My Keyboard went insane and instead of it producing something like "thank you very much", it would produce "than6k,y3' eyou3' everrrrry3' emuch".

but now I have an old junky keyboard that does the typing job well enough to get by.

So... what's new? Not much for me is new. Looking for a part-time job that can suppliment my income from the art centre so I can actually afford my tuition. I'm drawing lots, which is exactly what I want to be doing. I need to stop by my school (Sheridan) to find out if they have some life drawing going on during the summer.

i am actually in itally right now. typing this from a roman internet cafe. this place is pretty awsome. i will head to caprii tomorrow and florence 3 days after where i will be for the next 4 weeks. tell me what is happening in your life right now. So I doubt many of you will remember, and infact a lot of you are new watchers so you have no reason to remember but a month or so ago I posted that at the end of april I will be going to italy. Well time has moved quickly (as it always tends to do) and now we are only 11 days till I leave (april 21st). What does this mean to you and why do you care? wel I have been told that we will have some internet access to computers where we are in italy but since this is probibly going to be my only trip in life to a place like this I really can't imagine that I'll be spending all my time in an internet cafe. Also this is a school trip so even if I did want to stay inside all the time I wouldn't be able to. Basically I am writting all this to let you all know that if my activity suddenly drops and I take a couple days (or longer) to reply then it's not cause I don't care. it's cause I'm in Italy! I will try to comment when I can and post anything that I can get done in italy. I will be back June 4th.

I got into the Illustration program at Sheridan. according to the rumor mill the stats are that 1200 Applied, 874 portfolios were submitted and 108 people were accepted. I'm trying to hunt down others who got into the program so I can make some attempt at gathering friends before school even starts but so far I have not found a single person who has gotten into the program other then me. This means a lot of money and will be an exceptionally large amount of work but it also means i will have a Bachelors of the arts when I am done (and a website, a physical and online portfolio, and I should be an even better artist then i am now). So I am happy.

On a side note the Pope has passed away. According to St. Malachy that means there is only 2 more popes before "...the city of seven hills will be destroyed, and the formidable Judge will judge the people.". Personnaly I do not follow any organized religion but my best wishs do go out to those who are upset at his passing. Now no more pope talk because I'm sure we will all be talking about him none stop for the next month or more.

Also I am reading A Book of Five Rings (Go Rin No Sho) Written by Miyamoto Musashi. It's a great read. Anyone interested can see an online version of it at my bored link of the day
