So, it's halfway through March (!) and man.....things are moving like they always do- too fast when you need time to slow down, and never slow enough to get your act together. That's what I've been doing since the beginning of the year: getting my act together. Not just on the art side, but all-around. I've managed to shave 17 pounds off my frame and run my fastest 5K last week, and damn- that makes me proud. I've got a banged up knee and wicked tinnitus, but trained smart (and hard) and accomplished something I thought I couldn't do. 2012 is already over? It felt like it barely started. Man, time flies when you get older.

Anyway, 2012 was a HUGE year for me on a personal level. I got married! Also moved out of my parents' house and all that jazz. 2012 also marked the year I saw print! The HVZA graphic novel was conceived and delivered in the fall; in which I was the art director, cover artist, and one of the contributing sequential artists.

- Does it seem like deviantART is "not the place to be" with regards to posting art? My pageviews have drastically dropped over the past year. As you know, I've been looking to further advance my own understanding and skill set when it comes to digital coloring. With Baltimore Comic-Con next weekend, I may be in a bind when it comes to me doing the colors. So, here's my questions:

- How much is customary pay for coloring, especially if it's a one-off/for a print?
- Is there a procedure for profit sharing?
- What is the usual turn-around time?

I don't know how many of you know or remember, but after a two year engagement period with lots of ups and downs, I am now a happily married man!! Been real quiet on my end with uploads and such. Yeah, I know, I'm lazy and all, but that isn't the full reason(s) why I've been quiet. I have noticed over the past few months that a lot of my art friends have suffered inertness when it comes to creating anything. No, it's not artist block or dwindling creative juices. I've kicked around the idea before, but I want some feedback from all of you. As some, of you know, artists at conventions would sell small "sketchbooks" of their work. It's not an actual book to sketch in, but a small art book with sketches and other artwork, perhaps an in-progress picture of a pin-up or pencils to a sequential page. I would like to know if you would like to see such a product from myself. What would you like to see in it? And would you be willing to throw down some change for it?

As I mentioned in my last journal, I am serving as the art director on a graphic novel. I would like to speak a bit more on it and let y'all in on some details regarding the project.

The title of the project is HVZA. The graphic novel is more of an anthology with stories based off of the novel HVZA:Hudson Valley Zombie Apocalypse by Linda Zimmerman http://hvzombie.com/. The novel details the account of a young medical student who is frantically attempting to find a cure to a zombie pandemic whilst surviving in the streets of this catastrophe. Here's some quick updates with me:

- Currently working on a short story to be included in a graphic novel/anthology that I'm also the art director for. Hopefully the book will be out in the fall. More details as it develops.

- Been looking for a place to live. Fiancee and I may have found a spot.

- Work has been a handful, but I can't complain.

- Getting my con schedule up-to-date. Cutting down on shows this year- look for dates soon(ish).

- Learning how to paint with gouache. What a pain-in-the-ass.

- Doing a lot of running...at least for me. Three days a week, 6 miles a clip.

Yes indeed, as 2011 reaches its nadir I, along with many many others, will review the year that is/was 2011. Might as well beat the crowd and post this now. ;)

Overall, 2011 was a pretty good year. She started in some middleground with work and art, but as the year progressed I saw the light at the end of the tunnel: obtaining a full-time teaching position. I've been fairly negligent with drawing and such. As many of you know, I am now a full-time elementary art teacher. The bulk of my summer was dedicated to working summer camp, prepping for/attending  cons, and at the tail-end, gearing up for the school year. It's been quite the adjustment to go from a sub to full-time and from middle school to elementary. I would even say it's overwhelming, but I won't admit it. :P There's something new everyday; and while there are challenges- so far it's been great.

Well, the 2011 Baltimore Comic-Con is over and done with. The weekend was a total blur to me as I ran around with finishing camp and prepping for the show and driving down there at 5AM the morning of, but wow....what a great show. Did just as good this year as I did last year (fell a few clams short, but nothing to complain about). The place was packed on Saturday and honestly- I can't remember all that much from pure exhaustion and fatigue. As many of you know, I have my degree in Art Education and have spent well over two years looking for stable work in that field. That journey, filled with ups and downs, false hopes and revolving doors of opportunity, ended today as I signed my contract to be an elementary art teacher!!!!! That albatross has been lifted and now I can breathe easier. :dance:

As far as art goes, I honestly don't know how much will go up over the summer. I've been delinquent with posts but not ideas. Now that the craziness of the school year is over and  my summer job kicking in, I can focus on what I want and need to do.
