Cory's actually attempting to get involved with the dA community again!? Yes! It's true!

I currently have an application for a group in, and with any luck #PressArts will soon be up and running. It's going to be a group based around the printmaking media, featuring artists and work, along with tutorials, real world galleries/studios along with other resources for printers of all kinds.

If it goes through and I get it I will be also getting a dAmn room set up to go along with #PressArts.

I felt compelled to get reinvolved and it'll also help me stay focused on my own art in a weird sort of way. And...as much as I hate this god forsaken website, it's still home. I've been here for almost 5 years now, or something close (tabbing to go look at my first account...)...Yes! 5 years as of this past October, 3 accounts and I've never really done much except lurk dAmn and the forums for a short period of time.

As for membership to said hopeful group, it'll be open to anyone who at least has an appreciation for the wonderful world of printmakers and feels inclined to hang out with us. I could also use a web savvy friend or two in there for admin-ing and such.

--

Real life: School issues are less intense than previously believed. I love that my school HANDS us loopholes. I was able to use an old, useless liberal arts credit to cover the 1.5 studio credit I was missing and am now only required to take one wintersession course. And provided paying Target off did something positive for my credit and I can get my loan, I'll be graduating in May.

I've started plans for a table top printing press that I'll be building with my father, so that even though I won't be participating in the art world, I can still print and make things.

And I may still be jobless and broke, but it's amazing what having a significant other does for your day to day mentality. Working on the job thing though.

--

I've been subbed. Features and polls and things to come. Also this group thing is taking forever.

The features had been up long enough...

So the semester is almost over and I cannot wait for it to be. I'm tired of school. I've been tired of school. It doesn't help that I've pretty much lost interest in finishing due to the fact I refuse to get into the art world after I graduate. Oh, that's if I graduate. 4.5 credits that I can't tack on next semester otherwise they'll charge me an extra three grand AND I'll have...seven courses? So, I was supposed to take the wintersession stuff, BUT, I can't get in to the Registrar because she's never in, and I can't get a loan nor do I have the money to drop now. I might not even be able to pay for the last bit of next semester. So yeah...

/rant

At least I've been enjoying the monotyping, and I'll have a new lithograph and drawings/paintings on here soon. Once I get my hands on a camera really.

I finally got over my fear of the litho stones about 2 weeks ago and started a reductive print. And press issues and fuming acid bottles aside, it's going fairly well. It's similar to working with the zinc plate wipings, but not really.

For those who aren't familiar with printmaking:

The zinc plates are what are used for the etching process ([link]). The most recent prints in my gallery are done by taking a clean plate with no scratching or acid biting and spreading the ink across as I would if I was inking a plate with information. Once I have a thin, even coat of ink over the whole plate I wipe with my hands, a rag or a small chunk of chipboard to create the image.

Doing it on the zinc plate works different than doing a monotype off of plexi ([link]) in the way the ink works with the plate itself. On plexi the ink is fairly separate from the plate and moves much more freely and doesn't allow for much in the way of controlling gradients. The zinc plate always holds a bit of the ink because of it's slightly more porous make up, and allows me to not have to constantly add more ink to the plate. It begins to act more like charcoal in that I can spread it and move it.

It's great.

The litho is much the same process, removing black to create the forms and spaces and is a much more fluid way of working, rather than drawing everything in individually. I can work the entire image at once and thus make a much more cohesive (imo) piece.

/artrant

So sick of getting heckled every time I leave constructive criticism on a piece I find here. I'm sorry that I don't suck the artists' metaphorical penises on everything I look at and feel deserves some sort of comment.

As an "artist" one is supposed to be prepared for ANYTHING. And one would think, granted most people find that hard to do nowadays, that as an artist you would want your art to grow and improve, right?

Well, please explain to me, how the fuck you're supposed to get there when people do nothing but tell you about the "good" aspects and ignore what you fucked up on.

Stop being pussies and take your criticism. If anything, you should be happy that someone even took the time to say ANYTHING other than "OMG I LUV DIS".

Where does that get you? And I'm not saying that critiques and comments are supposed to be negative, but don't take shit so personally that when someone does point out something unsuccessful you don't turn into Whiny Little McBitchpants.

In general I guess I'm trying to get at: Grow up, don't take it personally, and don't waste your and the artist's time with superficial little "I like this." comments. Say something if you have it to say, don't if you don't.

--

RAWR

Less angry now. Really, all I want is for superficiality to stop. Good or bad. "this sucks", "i love this". STOP. If you're going to take the time to say anything, tell them why you love it. Or why it sucks. Tell them what is successful. Make the comment worthwhile.
