Something I've been needing to do for awhile ...

~~~~~
Q: How do you make your avatars?
A: MS Paint, Irfanview and/or GIMP, and lots of practice.  I think the most common misconception that people seem to be under is that, because the main tool is MS Paint, which is a simple program, that pixel art must be simple and easy to do.  You couldn't be farther from the truth!  In a lot of ways, pixel art is harder than traditional digital art.
Q: Will you make me an avatar?
A: Of course!  My prices are as follows:
$5 for non-animated
$10 for animated (up to 15 frames)
+$1 per frame after 15
All prices are in USD, and I accept Paypal.
Q: Woah, wait.  I don't want to pay!  Can you just make me one anyway? *puppy dog eyes*
A: No.  I put a lot of time and effort into my avatars, and I'm not going to make one for just anyone who happens to ask.  That might sound greedy to you, but I do have a family, and a job, and a life outside of art/Internet, plus other forms of art I enjoy making.  My "avatar time" is very limited.  It's only fair that, if I'm going to then turn around and spend that time on a total stranger, I should be compensated.  And my prices are more than fair.
However, I do art trades every so often, and I might be willing to do one in return for an avatar.  Note me if interested.
Q: Can't I just use one of your avatars that you've already made?
A: It depends.  I've relaxed my restrictions on avatars A LOT recently.  The vast majority are available to be used by anyone.  The only ones I ask people don't use are the ones I've made for other people, or that I'm currently using myself.
Q: What if I just use a restricted avatar anyway?
A: Then I contact you asking you to take it down.  I then wait a week (and I WILL remember).  If you haven't removed the avatar after that week, I report you to deviantART for art theft, and you more than likely get your account suspended or even banned.  You have been warned.
Q: What about tutorials?
A: I actually have one large tutorial in the works.  It should be available soon.
Q: Can you send me =silver303's tutorial?
A: This is something I've been getting a lot recently.  After I mentioned in the comments of my first real avatar that I used a tutorial by =silver303, and she ended up taking it down off her account, people have been asking me to link them to it, or even send it to them.  I cannot do this.  For one thing, I am in no way affiliated with =silver303.  We are not buddies, we don't know each other, I have about as much access to her as you do.  That means I do not have access to that tutorial!  I didn't save it to my computer, and I don't know of some secret part of her gallery or website that it's still available on.  And I won't insult her by asking her for it when she so obviously wants it gone.  Even if I did have it, to send it to a third party would be violating her copyright, not to mention just plain mean.  Do not ask, your answer will be a link here.
~~~~~

I believe I covered everything. If you have a question not answered here, feel free to note me! I promise, I'm a completely reasonable person, and won't be upset or anything. I don't bite!

My subscription ran out a couple of months ago, and I don't really see the need to update it. Anyone who's been watching my gallery for awhile will have noticed my lack of updates recently. That's because I've just gotten so tired of the deviantART scene.

My reasons, in list form (because I love lists):

1) The people. I don't know if it's just because I'm getting older. But it seems like the average age of users on dA just seems to get lower and lower every year. I swear that half the people I run into don't speak English at all, they speak some sort of strange, twisted pseudo-English composed in written form of hieroglyphics and symbols whose meaning aren't readily discerned. And I swear, if I have to witness one more hissy-fit ...

2) The system. deviantART used to be so cool. Before the ads. And the prints. And the subscription thing. And all kinds of other things that I can't even remember right now. More in more, it seems like dA isn't about the art anymore; it's about the money. And they're looking for more and more ways to bleed you dry.

3) The thefts. This is a new one for me. But several times now, I've had my art stolen and used by other people. And it's always been my avatars. I started making those as sort of a hobby. Now, it seems like every time I log onto my account here, someone else has taken one of the avatars that took hours to make and slapped them up as their own work, without so much as a hint that it wasn't even made by them, much less who the real artist is. And that's so not right. The latest one even edited the avatar to suit their needs, removing my name and putting up their own. They're usually pretty nice when confronted, and take it down ... but it makes me wonder just how many people haven't been caught yet.

So, although I'm not leaving deviantART or anything like that, I'm just making my pseudo-hiatus official. I've already cut way down on the people I watch here, to the bare essentials -- and I'll probably cut down even farther later. And if it takes me several days, or even weeks, to answer, I'm sorry. But ... deviantART just isn't for me anymore.

Naked women does not automatically equal art.

It's as simple as that. Just because a woman is willing to take off her clothes and bare all for a camera does not automatically mean the photo taken is gold. Yet, day after day, I come to dA, to find that yet another mediocre photo of a naked woman is being featured.

None of these photos are bad, per ce. All have reasonably good lighting, and the like. But the one today (and I'm not going to mention names, or specifics) doesn't even have a background. The lights and shadows aren't necessarily outstanding. It's just ... a woman. Naked. Therefore, it's the best freakin' photo taken since that one in National Geographic a few years ago of the blue-eyed woman in Afghanistan.

No mention is made of the artists who actually put effort into their artwork.

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not staying photos of tasteful nudes shouldn't be considered artwork. But time must be put into these things. Consider the backdrop, the mood, the coloring, the lighting. All these things must be done. Not just drop the robe, pose, shoot, done.

Well, it's my turn to give back to the community. No, not with nude photos (you don't want to see me without clothes, I promise). But with a little piece of mine I whipped up. I'm very proud of this. It took me forever! I put just as much thought and work into it as those artists do those photos. PLEASE DO NOT VIEW UNLESS YOU ARE OF THE LEGAL AGE OF CONSENT IN YOUR COUNTRY. Usually 18.

Nadia (aka *bleedsopretty) is one of the graphic resource officer here at dA. Unfortunately, she has been diagnosed with a runaway case of MS, and is basically dying. Nik (^thespook), her boyfriend, is flying out from Australia to the United States to be with her. To show his support, *tExTuReMaTtIc has created a DVD of 150 stock textures, royalty-free, all at least 2304x3072, that he plans on shipping to all who order at his own expense. Check it out, here:

[link]

Proceeds (every cent of it) will go to Nadia's living expenses, doctor visits, medical supplies, etc.

Check out the deviation for more information, and if you use texture at all, please order. It's going to a good cause ...

~~~~
Listening to: "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley
~~~~

Gah, I hate allergies! They ruin everything, make you tired, and make your thoughts feel thick, like you're wading through syrup or something. See, see what they do? That just made no sense!

Anyway, just put up my latest piece, "Often?", which is a new milestone for me, because it has a background. But not just any background, but a subtle one. Which, in that medium, is I think better. Also, the lineart is good, the shading good ... I'm just all-around proud of it. It also is a new style of coloring, which I like better. Or, I should say, a new way of doing things, since the actual style hasn't changed.

Anyway, that's all for now. Kudos to anyone who knows what movie the title of this journal entry comes from. Give you a hint: Renée Zellweger and Liv Tyler before they were famous.

~~~~
Nothing new uploaded, although I am working on a sexy pic of Lycaon, the Son of the Moon (the werewolf king) that should be finished soon.  Expect to see that in the next few days.  And I am very proud with how well it's turning out.
I finally am getting the hang of using a digital camera instead of a scanner!  As the last upload shows ... as well as the one to come, which is even better, line-art wise.
Biggest deal is that I'm starting to take art trades / commissions.  Commissions will depend on how complicated your request is, but probably will be something like $10 each.  And, yes, I do have a Paypal account!    I will not do art trades with everyone.  I'm not talking about skills -- not everyone has the raw talent and experience necessary to have the kind of work featured on the covers of books, magazines, etc.  But the new way I do art work takes hours of time.  And I absolutely refuse to do that for someone, for free, if I receive in return a stick figure drawing that took five minutes to whip up.  Unless you made something like Animator vs. Animation, in which case I'll gladly trade.
Listening to: "Mein Herr" from the Cabaret Soundtrack
~~~~

I am pissed. Seriously pissed. My camera is not working. Oh, it takes pictures just fine. I've taken several already, as you've seen on my ID. And there will be more photos to come. But it does not take pictures of my artwork.

That is, it takes them. But they are so blurry as to be not even recognizable. The bloody scanner did ten times better! So, I'm forced to trace over my lines in a new layer. Not easy with a laptop touchpad, by the way. And the lines aren't the best. I've been trying, really I have, but the results are coming out more cartoon-y than anything else.

If anyone knows how to take decent pics of artwork, TELL ME PLEASE! Note me, put it in a comment to this journal, tag me on my main page, I hardly care. Just do it, please! Is there some setting I'm missing or something? I'm using a Kodak EasyShare C310.

So, looks like it's just going to be pixel work for awhile, until I can get the camera situation figured out. Sorry, guys.

Listening to: "Brandy (You're a Fine Girl)" by Looking Glass (I think ...)

~~~~
Good song, good song, if a bit depressing ...  Anyway, good news on two counts!  I got my digital camera working, finally.  Come to find out, it only needed new batteries ... how embarassing is that?!  But, because I got my camera working, I now have access to digital pictures, which means I can do things liiiiikkkee ....
My new ID!    Alright, so it's nothing special.  Just a shot of me, all dolled up, with square ... things ... but, hey, better than nuth'n.  This was taken right after a job interview, when I had makeup on, and my hair back, and nice clothes on, etc.  And it was really hot that day, and even worse with horrible humidity, so I was sweaty and hot, which is why I'm kinda glittering.  And I couldn't figure out how to get rid of it, so glittery Caitlin it is.  I was able, however, to Photoshop out that pimple ...
More later, as more art will be forthcoming.  In the meantime, stay cool in the horrible summer heat, and stay away from sailors bringing gifts from far away.
Listening to: "Dance Dance" by Fall Out Boy
~~~~

I happen to like Fall Out Boy. A lot. I probably should buy a CD, but I have Limewire and so get all the songs I want for free, so why bother?

New update today (sort of). More like just a recolor of an old update, my cartoon Yve, the drow. She's now a redhead, with pale skin. I was trying to make an ID for here on dA, but it didn't turn out right, and I was most displeased with it. Still, figured I might as well slap it up there, right?

Anyway, my graphics are put on hold for right now. My sister got a laptop, so no scanner access anymore. And I brought a digital camera, but I can't get it to work. So, until I fix it, no more traditional art, which is, believe it or not, most of what I do.

More later, we've just sold our boat, and going to the lake for one last ride. Which is bittersweet -- we never use it, but it's been a lot of fun. And now I'm rambling, so this is Caitlin out! *salutes*

1. If you use them, please credit me with a link to my deviantart page, on the same page as the emoticon.
