Something hit me as I was reading this passage earlier.

Let me bring you up to speed, if you're not already reading. Eliyahu (Elijah) has had the encounter where he showed Ba`al and Asherah, the false gods whose prophets were in the service of the king and queen of Israel at the time, to be nothing more than fakes. Said prophets were executed, and after a bit with a cloud (interesting in itself, but not to this point), he's outrunning the king's horses.

But then comes an order from Izevel (Jezebel), and he takes off from Yizr`e'lah (Jezreel) to B'er Sheva (Beersheba), leaves his servant, and heads into the wilderness. And there we find him under a rotem (broom tree?), asking for his life to be taken by YHWH.

We're getting there, okay?

And then he sleeps. He is awakened by a mal'ak (angel), who touches him and says, "Arise and eat."

6 Then he looked, and there by his head was a cake baked on coals, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank, and lay down again.

Having been told to arise and eat, he eats, drinks... and lies down again. So? Check this out:

7 And the mal'ak YHWH came back the second time, and touched him, and said, "Arise and eat, because the journey is too great for you." So he arose, and ate and drank; and he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights as far as Chorev (Horeb), the mountain of Elohim (God).

There. It explicitly says that he arose that time, and that's when he got the benefit of the food; when he was fully compliant.

Okay, I'm done now.

What a movie. I shall have to mark it on my Film-Lover's Check List.

The day before, we read and discussed Gen. 37:1-40:23. It's the first part of the life of Yosef (Joseph)... well, the first part other than his birth where he gets a mention. Some highlights:

There's a play on words in 37:8. His name's Yosef, right? Well, after he told them his dream, they tell him off a bit. So was added (Vayosifu) then hatred for him because of his dreams and because of his words.

v. 26 - Apparently, they were still considering killing him, even after Reuven nixed it (v. 21-22), because then Yehudah (Judah) saw some traders and decided it would be better to sell him than to kill him.

v. 32 and 38:25 - As the brothers had their father identify Yosef's symbol of authority, so Tamar had Yehudah identify his symbols of authority.

39:20 - Potiyfar didn't kill Yosef, or even have him put in the common prison, but put with the king's prisoners. I think the man knew what his wife was like, eh?

40:13, 19 - The first seven Hebrew words of each interpretation are the same: "B'od sh'loshet yamiym yisa Far'oh 'et - ro'sheka..." Now imagine this baker, he's just heard a good interpretation for the cupbearer's/butler's dream, and the interpretation for his had started out the same way... but then his face must have fallen when it continued, decidedly not in his favor.

ch. 40 - See if these themes sound familiar: wine, bread, someone hanging on a tree, an upcoming feast (though a birthday rather than one instituted by God), and three days.

TRADITION: It is said that the offenses of the two prisoners were thus: the wine the cupbearer gave to Far'oh had a fly in it (which may not have been his fault), and the baker's bread had a rock in it (almost certainly deliberate). This may or may not have been the case, but I find it interesting to think of Bread with a Rock in it, if you catch my drift.

I haven't viewed it yet; I have D. W. Griffith'sAbraham Lincoln in the DVD queue ahead of it, I prefer to watch movies alone, and this laptop seems to not like the idea of playing DVDs anymore, so it may be a little while before I do see it. But here are my impressions from the box.

o Well! I wonder which one's Charlie... The one on the left? Nah, he looks like the undead. Maybe he vants to suck your blood... but chocolate will do. Second from the left... nah, too busy scarfing to get a good shot. Can't be the title character. The one in the middle? Traditional haircut, consistent skin color, looks reasonably happy... I'd say we have a winner!
o And now for the back cover. So here are five Oompa-Loompas whose expressions I can see clearly. ... Maybe we caught them at a bad time, but are we really expected to be happy... like them? I suppose I could do that, but I'd have to be in a bad mood first... Maybe the message is, "As scowly as we look, we're still happier than you are."
o The back-of-box credits. Well, Freddie "Charlie" Highmore is listed, but no Annasophia "Violet" Robb, Julia "Veruca" Winter, Jordan "Mike" Fry, or Philip "Augustus" Wiegratz. Hey, Christopher Lee. And Felicity Dahl's an Executive Producer.

Well, guess I'd better put it back on the stack for now.

In other news, I saw something called The Bible Game for the GBA. Had I had more time last night, I would've picked it up out of curiosity. I know they almost certainly misrepresented it somehow, but I want to know how... from my perspective.

She has almost wordlessly taught many people a lesson about making sure you have in writing what you want done if you should ever come to be in such a state. Whether she wanted to live or die, being in the center ring of the "circus" can't have been all that pleasant.

Wait, I remember... I thought his stay was going to be temporary, that someone would claim him. Apparently not.

We kept SAYING we couldn't keep the kitty because the dog would attack it; why didn't we BELIEVE it? And now we see it time and time again as we -- scratch that, *I* -- am required to save the kitty from the ever-searching jaws of our dog.

To what end are we keeping him? To try our patience as the above situation is played out over and over, with only the details changing?

Next cat I hear gets to brave the weather. It's a better life than nearly being torn apart every... every few days.

#25: Draw three girls from Sonic's universe (one has to be a canon character. ex. Sally, Amy, Mina, etc.), fan characters included if you wish, as "Charlie's Angels". Have them posing, or dress them as the Angels, it doesn't matter, as long as it retains the theme of the three girls working as a team of spies. Nope.
#26: Use the most bizarre method of drawing/coloring you can possibly imagine. Can't find that right shade of red? Use lipstick! Need that bristly look? Use mascara! Draw a picture with markers and splash water on it. Use nail polish as your new paint. There are millions of mediums out there no one would think to use. Go out on a limb and try something new and bizarre. Eh. Probably not.
#27: Draw any of your favorite rabbits from the Sonic series, be it Bunnie, Cream, or Vanilla (Cream's mom), as the Easter Bunny or just in their Easter Sunday best. You can even do a group pic of them if you wish! BONUS 1: Same, but with Jazz or Spaz. BONUS 2: Same, but with an Azumarill. I'm not doing it.
#28: Draw what your character or a canon character might see in the Mirror of Erised (a magic mirror from Harry Potter that shows the viewer his heart's desire). Nah.

For some reason, I was in a car. I looked out the window to see THE CLASSIC MUSHROOM-SHAPED CLOUD. It was very quiet, much like nuclear explosions aren't. I only knew there was an explosion because of the cloud. So we turned away from it (as if we were going to outdrive the explosion), but then, we stopped in a parking lot. Then, as I was about to go inside a building, another... missile, I guess? struck and detonated close enough that if the situation had been real and not a dream, I would have been a goner in a heartbeat. As it was, next thing I knew, I was in an odd version of... I guess an afterlife waiting area. It also apparently doubled as furniture storage for the prepared place. I felt... semi-numb? It was an odd feeling, even for a dream. I was trying to find out where to go next, and I went into a hallway leading to hell, apparently. I heard a shout of "HELL? NO!" echo. The hallway had some red light in it. I decided I didn't want to go any further, so I turned around and made for the doors. I had to made a couple of turns in the hallway that I didn't have to in getting there, but I went back through the doors and watched them close. But demons (I'm guessing) came into the room through another door. #25: Draw three girls from Sonic's universe (one has to be a canon character. ex Sally, Amy, Mina, ect.), fan characters included if you wish, as "Charlie's Angels". Have them posing, or dress them as the Angels, it doesn't matter, as long as it retains the theme of the three girls working as a team of spies. Nope.
#26: Use the most bizarre method of drawing/coloring you can possibly imagine. Can't find that right shade of red? Use lipstick! Need that bristly look? Use mascara! Draw a picture with markers and splash water on it. Use nail polish as your new paint. There are millions of mediums out there no one would think to use. Go out on a limb and try something new and bizarre. Eh. Probably not.
#27: Draw any of your favorite rabbits from the Sonic series, be it Bunnie, Cream, or Vanilla (Cream's mom), as the Easter Bunny or just in their Easter Sunday best. You can even do a group pic of them if you wish! BONUS 1: Same, but with Jazz or Spaz. BONUS 2: Same, but with an Azumarill. I'm not doing it.
#28: Draw what your character, or a canon character might see in the Mirror of Erised (a magic mirror from Harry Potter that shows the viewer his heart's desire). Nah.
#29: If a character's design changed, be it yours or canon, draw them in a comparison picture, facing each other, possibly as if they are about to throw some fists. Nah.

My thoughts: It's an interesting little gizwatchie. It'd be nice if the ties were listed, though. An example is the favo[u]rites. Seriously, folks, I tend to give up on pictures with dimensions of 2000+ pixels.

So. Look around your favorite image editor. Look for "Resize..." or "Stretch/Skew".

The former is found in MGI Photo Suite 4 in the Adjust menu, and in iPhoto Plus 4 in the Photo menu. In both cases, make sure that "Keep Proportions" or "Keep Aspect Ratio" is checked It might be so by default. Now choose a new amount for one of the dimensions. Good heights are less than 768 or 600. Good widths are less than 1024 or 800. Get the picture? I want to see the whole thing without scrolling once the bottom is in view. Exceptions to the "less than" guideline are when you're actually making something that has to fit the screen, like a wallpaper.

Now, for MS Paint. This one's a bit tricker because you're dealing with percentages. Once you've figured a good width or height using the guideline above, divide that dimension by the same dimension found in Image -> Attributes.... That is, if you've figured a height, look at the current height; if you've figured a width, look at the current width. Now multiply that quotient by 100. Round the product to the nearest whole number and put it in the Horizontal and Vertical text boxes in Stretch. Leave the Skew text boxes alone.

There should be something like either of these in any image editor you come across.
