The main prompt for this journal was something that happened on friday, which pretty much made my week. I was contacted by an up and coming band, asking if they could use one of my photos for a poster advertising a gig - to which I naturally said yes. To my knowledge it's the first time my photography has been seen by anyone who isn't one of my friends or family (or one of you good people of deviantART), or even displayed publicly. And for me, what's even better is that the band isn't half bad, actually there pretty good - if any of you are in London you should go and see them. Last week the Prime Minister of the UK, Gordon Brown, warned that we (meaning the world, and her governments) had only 50 days to save the world from a climate catastrophe. He was primarily referencing the climate conference due to start in Copenhagen in December, with the aim of agreeing a new international treaty for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. US President Barack Obama, who recently was awarded the nobel peace prize (apparently just for being elected), has apparently decided NOT to attend the conference. Not being a cynic but I suspect that if Prime Minster Brown is right, then we're probably in store for our 'climate catastrophe'.

It is clear that our world is changing, even if you still are a climate change sceptic, then this site should give you a scare, especially when you consider global energy resources as well! - [link]

Our world is changing, it is plain too see. However, clear as it is, no government, no company is willing to act, for all the will in the world they cannot break the system that drives them, that binds them. No well-intentioned leader can act, save to destroy what they have sought to save, and so they do not act in the hope that inaction may buy them a little more time.

We each of us may change our ways, we may go ‘green’, reduce our consumption and hope we might ‘do our bit’. But though every rich man might become poor, in the hope to save themselves, their actions cannot succeed.

For the problem is not people, nor us nor our leaders, but it is the ‘system’ is our economy, and our ‘freedom’, our history and our greed. Our civilization, our capitalism, is choking the world and it is out of our control. Our leaders can do nothing now, at least not until it is to late, our civilization is on course for destruction, it cannot be stopped, it can merely be survived.

The world ends.

That said, I would be lying if I said that it was the only thing I've been doing recently. I've just come back from an extended trip back home to see my friends and family, and to go to the V festival in Chelmsford. It was certainly very good to see them all again, I hadn't seen one of them for over a year, since she's been over in Japan - [link] - . I also took quite a few new photos, which may or may not be making there way up on this website in the near future. The V festival was very good this year, a couple of great performances - Pendulum, and MGMT, both of whom are really well worth seeing if you get the chance.

Yes, I have taken my first step away from communal student living and now reside in a one bedroom flat, it' quite a bit of a change - it's certainly nice to have my own space, but it not quite the social environment i've been living for the past 4 years. Even so maybe it's a positive, less distraction and more incentive to go out more then I used to. The past three weeks have been somewhat routine, get up, go into the labs, work, come back, go to bed, such is the case when almost everyone you know has gone home for the summer. That said, i have met some new people and they're a friendly lot, so i'm not a complete social pariah.

Well from now on I'll try and keep these up to date, not ignore my journal for 3 weeks again.

Indeed last week I had the pleasure of traveling 90 miles north of where I live, to Wensleydale to attend the christening of my cousin's two children. My cousin lives in Canada so this was the first time that most of my family have seen her two children, it was certainly good to have the greater part of my family under one roof. I seem to have inherited the role of 'family photographer' from my father, which I have to say has mixed blessings, though I did get the opportunity to take a group photo, with 5 generations of my family in it which I think must be a rare event for most people.

To say the least this last week since then has been a week of many events. Firstly I finally passed my driving test, which i have been putting off for a long time now, but a first time pass is something I am certainly not going to be unhappy about, especially given the pass rate for the test in the UK (>40%). This week has also seen for me the loss of two of my housemates, with the end of the academic year (for those lucky enough to finish in June) many of my friends have now finished their courses, it's certainly good to see people moving on with their lives and getting out into the 'real world' but it does now mean that my student house (hovel) now has half as many people in it. However, this isn't going to be an on going problem, since in a couple of weeks i'll be moving into my own flat, which I am certainly looking forward too.

Anyway, that'll do for this week, I can't guarantee that i'll be writing another entry next week since i'm going home (not uni) for my Birthday.

So, as the title implies, there has been a end for me recently, but its been a good end. Yesterday, I finished the last exam of my masters course, so with any luck i'll never have another exam again, or at least not for a long time. But of course, this means that the real world (as in not being a taught student) is now an imminent reality, but for the time being it's time to relax in my world. Role on the summer, perhaps i'll go and take some new photos for you all... maybe...

THE WORLD IS NOT ENDING! - Please remain calm

Now to attempt to dispel some myths and rumors.

OVER-POPULATION
We've all seen it on the news (or at least I hope we have), riots in many countries round the world, due to the fast rising price of food. People around the world are starving and one of the principle causes being blaimed is the rising poppulation across the globe.

Indeed, the global population (fat approaching 7 billion people) is vast, and actually accounts for 5% of the ALL THE PEOPL WHO HAVE EVER LIVED! Which is pretty amazing. But never fear, it isn't likely to get much higher. Global birth rates are going down, indeed in the EU (and probably soon in China) the population is actually dropping!
Globally, recent studies have shown that the averge family has 2.7 childen which isn't far of the 2.1 chuldren required for a stable global population.

And there IS actually enough food to feed them all, thanks to our modern farming methods, the world can support this many of us (lets all thank Dr.Haber for that one, even if he was the 'father of chemical warfare'. The only reason people are starving, is because the food is going elsewhere, we in the west eat and waste far more food then we actually need, and if that wasn't enough, what little food we do actually produce for ourselves is now going to make BIO-FUELS so that we can keep driving around in our cars whilst the poor starve.

Starvation is a modern problem, and its not down to over population, it's down to us in the west, and if we get our acts together, it is a problem that can be solved with no loss in lives.

CLIMATE-CHANGE
There is no escaping it - our climate IS CHANGING. It cannot be denied (by people of a sound mind) we have seen in recent years more extreme weather then ever before. Hurricane Katrina and the recent cyclone in Burma are two very good examples.

But don't worry, we're not going to see scenes from 'the day after tomorrow' anytime soon. Global warming has essentially caused the energy in atmosphere to rise, which means essentially that it gets wetter and warmer. Now for many animals this is far from good news, since they'll lose their habitats and some will become extinct, but such events have happened before (even if we didn't cause them) so in the very long run, there is little loss.

We cannot now stop of reverse the changes that are happening too our planet, we've been causing the damage for over 100 years, so we cannot reverse the process now. We must adapt to the changes, build better houses, adapt our life styles etc... In the long run humanity will survive for two reasons.

1. There is 6.8 billion of us, nothings going to wipe out the species that doesn't destroy the whole planet, which climate change won't.
2. Humanity is an intelligent (apparently) species, and we will adapt when forced too.

Essentially, as long as your not an animal trapped in a small vunarable habitat, or happen to live in Bangladesh, or Florida or on a beach you should be fine. (but maybe a bit damp).

RESOURCES
This planet of ours has only a limmited amount of resources, and this is presnting our current society with some of its greatest challenges.

FUELS: Oil, Yes, very soon it will run out (or get much too expensive which is the same thing). However, there are many alternatives. Oil provides us with fuel, power and plastics, all of which can be sourced from elsewhere.

The best alternatives for fueling our cars are 'bio-fuels' and simple electricity, since both can be produced and used in a 'carbon neutral' way, and use essentially renewable resources (unlike hydrogen fuel, which produces CO2 as a byproduct of it's production).

Yes, I know I blamed 'Bio-fuels' for starving the worlds poor, and it's true, if done badly (as we do now) it does. Current practice uses grains and other edible material for bio-fuel because it's the easiest thing to make it from, however it can and should be made from waste plant material (essentially the bit we don't eat).

Bio-fuel is great simply because the energy that powers your car is basically solar. The chemicals combusted are produced by plants using sun-light and atmospheric CO2, so burning it just puts the CO2 back where the plant got it from with no net increase! An attempt to prevoke some thought.

I imagine very few of you who read this have perpetrated knowingly in some of the evils they are described above. But before you look away thinking that you are not responsible, let me enlighten you. People starve, people die and the world is torn apart so that we may live the lifestyle that we have grown used too in the 'civilized world'. We sit back and think ourselves blameless thinking; it is not we who do the damage, or take the food, we do not pull the trigger. But it for us that this is done, and in our names. For me. FOR YOU.

However, just as we cannot escape the blame, we can all help to improve things. No one person, not one of us is alone. We can all effect each other, help each other, be there for each other. We can make a stand and say, NO, not in my name.

Consider today what you can do, how can you help those around you, help those with who you share the world. Do something good, show love to one another, and share joy.
