It's small but the players are great. The game's mutant-heavy, but I've found that most Marvel games are; as long as there's a place for non-mutant Marvel characters, I'm happy.

Meanwhile, I snoopydance. *dancie dancie dance*

OK, so I gotta tell this little tale.

Night before last (actually, since it was 3-4am, the wee hours of Saturday morning), my husband got one of his "AUGH MUST GO OUT" urges, so we went off to the only place in town open at such an hour -- i.e., Wal-Mart. (I loathe the Mart, by the way, but when it's the only place open...)

Now, as is our wont in this soul-crushing, starkly-lit superstore, we made a stop by the toy section, and lo and behold, there it was, a huge cube-ish display in the middle of the main aisle.

Spiderman 3 action figures.

There were Spideys of multiple types. There were Harrys. Venoms galore. Lizards. Rhinos. And... of course... your favorite and mine... Doc Ock himself.

He was glorious. Molina style, albeit not as detailed as the original movie figures, but still very nice-looking. Gleefully, I snatched him up (well, one of him) and carted him around as we picked up a few other items.

Alas, my visions of adding him to my collection that night were dashed when we got to the register and were informed that they weren't sell-able yet. Come back in the morning, we were told.

For some reason or another, we didn't make it back over there the next day, but did make a trip tonight to find... nothing. Except for a few mournful Harrys hiding behind the Spiderman Origins figures, they were all gone.

Much mental flailing and gnashing of teeth later, we slunk home in defeat, whereupon I did some poking about online and found out, according to Hasbro's website, that said figures were not to be released for another 5 days. Wal-Mart, it seemed, had screwed up by setting them out on the floor early.

So I feel better now, knowing that a new Otto is out there waiting for me and that I will possess him in the fullness of time, but still...

Talk about an Ock Tease.

As is inevitable (I think) for musically-minded geeks, I created playlist, then winnowed it down to CD length for those boring drives to work. I have it in mind to create a second CD once I've got enough songs for it, but here's the playlist for disc 1.

(The name, by the way, I got from Silver Sehkmet, another Ock fangirl, generally nifty artist, and creator of the webcomic "Boy Genius." Doc Ocking -- to multi-task while looking badass.)

===

1. "Flight of the Valkyries" (Wagner) -- Is any real explanation needed here? Just one listen and it's pure Octavius -- loud, bombastic, and grand.

2. "Behind Blue Eyes" (The Who) -- A classic song for any villain with complex motivations, and the self-centered vanity of the song fits Otto to a T. (But my dreams, they aren't as empty as my conscience seems to be...)

3. "Christmas at Ground Zero" (Weird Al Yankovic) -- Included purely for humor purposes. What better Christmas Carol for Doctor Octopus than one involving a nuclear armageddon?

4. "Doc Ock Suite" (Danny Elfman) -- A no-brainer from the Spiderman 2 soundtrack. I find myself humming this one sometimes. Or having it in the back of my head while drawing.

5. "Fasten Your Seatbelts" (Pendulum) -- Included for the use of Alfred Molina's voice saying the line from the title, plus the sound of the fusion generator starting up. Next CD, I think, I'll be including movie soundbites.

6. "My Way" (Frank Sinatra) -- There's a reason why I set this as Otto's themesong on MarvelMUCK; if I had to pick just one song to represent the Octopus, this would be it. (I planned each charted course; Each careful step along the byway. But more, much more than this, I did it my way.)

7. "Know Me" (Toad the Wet Sprocket) -- A song for a younger Otto, full of anger and resentment.

8. "Leaders and Followers" (Bad Religion) -- Not a lot to say about this one except it's one of those songs that just hit me as appropriate when I heard it, especially since I was hunting around for more songs to fit Otto's mastermind, Master Planner aspect.

9. "Let the Poison Spill from your Throat" (The Faint) -- Otto's the master of the forked tongue, and overall this is a damn fine song.

10. "Mr. Self-Destruct" (Nine Inch Nails) -- One of three NiN songs. Can I help it if Trent Reznor does inner vileness so well? It's not a nice song, and Otto's not a nice person.

11. "Paint it Black" (The Rolling Stones) -- Like the Who song, a classic. Could't resist including it.

12. "Ruiner" (Nine Inch Nails) -- See #10. B)

13. "Sola Sistim" (Underworld) -- There's a Movie Ock CD playlist floating around on dA; I got the idea to include this song (along with a couple of others) from that. A moment of quiet cracked reflection.

14. "The Becoming" (Nine Inch Nails) -- A song about the soul-destroying melding of man and machine. Is there any question why I included this? B)

15. "The Conductor" (The Faint) -- If I had to pick just one song, it'd be "My Way." If I had to pick two, though, the second would be this one. Whether orchestrating over a nuclear reactor or the various elements of a vast criminal scheme, Otto is a master conductor.

16. "The Pretty Things are Going to Hell" (David Bowie) -- Just another damn good song that fits for both music and lyrics.

17. "You're Not Here" (Akira Yamaoka) -- Keeping in mind the torch that Otto's burning for the comatose Angelina Brancale (Stunner), I included this song. From the Silent Hill 3 soundtrack. I deliberately kept the number of love songs down to one, and chose this one because a) it's extremely apt and b) it's short.

===

I'm still pondering what to include on CD 2. "Red Right Hand" by Nick Cave, probably, but I haven't made any decisions otherwise.

I'm a fair-minded individual, or at least I try to be. With that in mind, after I'd finished reading "Freak Like Me" [link] , I sat down and gave "Countdown" (Spectacular Spider-Man v2, #6-10) a second and more careful reading.

The first time I read this, I couldn't get past my intense dislike of Doc Ock's redesign. I STILL don't like it, to be perfectly honest, and no disrespect meant to Mr. Ramos, who's doing a stellar job on the latest Wolverines (the Civil War tie-ins).

This time, I tried not to get distracted by the artwork and concentrate on the story. There were a couple of definite continuity errors in Ock's backstory (he grew up in Schenectady, NY (near Albany, go figure), not Queens, and his father died when Otto was in college) and one moment near the end that seemed, to me, to be /seriously/ out of character for both Spidey and Ock. Other than that? Well. Good stuff. /Very/ good stuff, to be honest. I eat a little bit of crow. B)

*sigh* Now if only Otto didn't look so... so... meh.

By the way, I very much recommend "Freak Like Me." Few writers, official or unofficial, have been able to capture the Ock-crazy quite so well.

Husband and I finally have gotten around to reading Ultimate Spider-Man (all the way up to issue 91). We're both still very much main-Marvel folks, though there's a lot that's entertaining and good about USM. Ultimate!Ock's still too flat-stomachy for my taste, but I've come to like the characterization, I think. Bendis' writing is extremely spiff.

Marvel needs to publish an Essential Doc Ock collection, by the way. I doubt they will, but they need to. B)

I also seem to have started an Ockfic. It was originally intended to be a House of M type thing, until I read a bit of HoM that I'd missed before and realized that Otto was doing just fine (bioethics! hah!). Fortunately, I didn't get TOO awfully far, plus the basic concept of the piece is too compelling for my poor little brain. And I was surprisingly pleased at the writing. So, I can rework. Might even finish it, who knows?

On MarvelMUCK, things are proceding quite interestingly, and Otto is a busy, busy Octopus. I cannot wait 'til the Big Sinister Plan (tm) finally gets revealed and implemented. And there's been some damned fine roleplay in the meantime. My page of logs ([link]) is getting quite long. B)

Oh, yes. Thanks to everyone who's commented, watched, or favorited. It's much appreciated.

For those peeking in, yes, I'm yet another vaguely drooly fangirl of Dr. Otto "Octopus" Octavius. Specifically comic-book Ock -- yes, I actually LIKE the green jumpsuit, so sue me. Enjoyed Spiderman 2 a whole heck of a lot, even though Movie!Ock is a very different fish than Comic!Ock. It's a reimagining that I'm amiable towards, though, especially since Molina so very, very much looked the part. I'm not a fan of Ultimate!Ock at all, and as for Ramos!Ock... ugh. I want to step on it and pretend it never ever ever existed.

While I don't write fanfic, I do roleplay Doc Ock on MarvelMUCK (wolfsinger.com 3763) and, if you're at all interested, you can find the logs of said roleplay on my website. Getting into Otto's headspace is turning out to be a very interesting diversion, let me tell you.

So, in summary:

Green jumpsuits, pudge, glasses -- good!
Alfred Molina -- also good!
Suits and other classy Ock-outfits (Ockfits?) -- good!
Ultimate!Ock -- ehn.
Ramos!Ock -- AUGH NO.
