I got back recently from a fantastic 2 weeks in South Africa where I was doing a very exciting Ranger course and earning a rather swanky certificate in Game Farm Management ^^ I was a really busy 2 weeks but I learned so much and saw/participated in a lot of things that I never thought I would! Photos will appear slowly (when I have time between work and sleeping) but a taste of things to come include... leopards, lions, cheetah (^^) honey badgers, sunsets/rises and a whole host of other African animals!

In the meantime enjoy the 2 i've put up so far... enjoy Africa's pwittiness ^^

So I finally handed in my 3rd year dissertation project yesterday! I've quite forgotten what life without writing about badgers is like! I'm still kicking myself about things I could have added or tweaked but it's in now so nothing I can do about it and it feels good! Now I just have 2 exams and a 20min presentation to do and I can finally get back to zoo trips and drawing!

Lots to look forward to this year too! Going to see one of my favourite comedians in December, Eddie Izzard!!! <3 Africa in August *bounce* oh and job hunting joys! Still i don't care what kind of job I get atm I just want to save up for my travelling around the world plans in 2011!

I went to see the awe inspiring brilliance that is Derren Brown on Monday (tickets being booked for London too!) OMG I am so in love with that man! I knew what kind of stuff to expect from him but seeing it all live for the first time is just incredible. The ending was fantastic too, though I can't say anything cos spoilers are bad m'kay ^^ you'll just have to watch it when it's on tv later this year.

Anyway, I really should go dry my hair cos i'm going for a yummy meal and cake to celebrate dissertation free life!

*kitty glomps all round*

EDIT: Ok... so maybe i'm not as free as I thought... I was asked today if I would submit my work to a wildlife symposium in November *panic* It would mean that hundreds of influential wildlife and conservation people from around the world will be able to read and comment on my project AND i would have to present it to them in a lecture theatre! Now I'm fine with other people reading my stuff but I draw the line at public speaking *shudder* yet I would love to have my work published as it would open the door to a lot of work possibilities meh damn me and my fears

*grump* well I had some photos to update on here but all of them seem to be 'corrupt' according to DEVart anyway... they open fine on my computer meh. Oh well... I'll try again at another time I guess.

I've not really been doing much other than uni stuff since October Can't wait till I have all this over with and I can do more zoo stuff and more drawing again! I've had to start my entire final year project again with only 5months to go! I'm a tiny bit 'eeeep' about that but i'm sure it'll work out somehow - i've had loads of support from 2 of my lectures that I think feel sorry for me having to ditch the Malawi stuff after working on it for so long. Bit sorry to have to drop it too but it was fun whilst I was out there! Love to JD - RIP!

More exciting news! I'm going back to AFRICA!!!!! YAY! It was a bit of a rushed decision in that I found out the deposit had to be made the next day and thought oh what the hell! It's going to be back in Moholoholo - a game reserve that we stayed in on the first trip to SA. A 2 week ranger course! I'm SO excited! I'm going with a number of people that went to SA the first time, as well as some other friends that didn't and some people that I don't really know. We get to use firearms, do 4x4 driving, tracking, skinning (mmm not to sure about that one!) AND we get to go and sleep under the stars in big 5 country!!!!! OMG! AND they have CHEETAH there!!!! *bounce* I'm really really excited can you tell hehe. I'll get a qualification out of it if I pass as well so thats even better We're going to Kruger Park afterwards too in the hope of seeing more brilliant African animals <3 Hope we see wild dog this time.. i would kill to see them! Anyway i'll go bounce somewhere more quiet hehe

I've been pretty busy with lectures and procrastinating with computer games! I've got 5 assignments to do by Christmas plus my dissertation to write up.. FUN!

I received some sad news from Malawi yesterday. The genet that appears in the photos on here, JD, was missing on the 15th October. They tracked down his radio-collar 1km away from his known territory - it had been cut off and found inside a house. The owners claimed that their dogs attacked JD, but this is very unlikely given that the collar was cut not shredded. The centre is now reconsidering any future releases into the area. This is such a shame given all the hard work they've been doing out there to preserve a large area of natural land/wildlife for the cities people. I hope that National Parks can bring the investigation to a close and find out the truth behind it. He was doing so well for himself R.I.P JD <3

Some people really really get on my nerves... some of these people I can just about cope with to a point where I can get on with it but some I end up fuming about and work myself up over for weeks! Now... I went to Malawi with a "charming" person on my course (who for the sake of this story shall be named Poopyhead - sure i'm immature sometimes). Well towards the end of her stay she took copies of our photos which as you would assume would be for personal use and that would be the end of that... Imagine how I feel when I get home from Malawi to find that she has posted a load of MY photos online without giving me credit or asking me first. Sooo.... Our conversation has proceeded as such...

Me: Noticed you're using a few of my photos on here... would you mind giving me credit/asking if you're going to use them please...
Poopyhead: Omg how rude! We SHARED the photos and how dare you act as though you're a published photographer
Me: Errr well I DO kinda publish them online actually... and theyre my photos = my copyright...
Poopyhead: I think thats pretty arrogant considering I was just putting them up there for my friends to see. I wasnt able to photograh myself and was clearly not trying to claim them as my own (yet she didn't NOT claim them to be her own >< so WTF does that imply?! HUH?!)

Ok maybe i'm getting too wound up but I really dislike how selfish this person is anyway especially after she wanted me to move the world (even after spending ALL night out tracking JD) to help her in the day and then goes home and tells other people not to help me! FFS! Why are people such idiots?! So anyway... some of my Malawi photos that i've put up here are now online elsewhere too... no idea where else she's posted them but if anyone does spot them please let me know...

Other news... I'm back at uni now and just got my loan through sooo we all know what that means... ZOO TRIP TIME! ^^ Plans to go to Port Lympne and Colchester soon as well as Midland Safari Park (a first for me...). Its going to be a VERY busy few weeks coming up

I'm back from Malawi (at last ) I decided to stay out there an extra week longer than originally planned to allow for some chill time. That was spent in a lovely place called Nkata Bay. We stayed in a chalet that was right on the lake shore - soooo beautiful! Photos to follow in dribs and drabs soon.

The actual trip was a great experience, although it was not exactly what we were expecting. I got ill on the malaria tablets that I was taking, and started feeling a bit crap on the way home =/ It's been a few days now and really hoping i've not caught malaria >< I feel a doctors trip incoming very soon

I did do a lot of interesting things whilst there though, including animal darting lessons (not on a live animal though..), operation on a vervet monkey - a tail amputation, baboon confiscation - from a local village that were keeping him tied to a tree and my genet tracking which happened during the night, so i became nocturnal for a few weeks - that was fun!
I'm not long back from my study trip to Jersey! We had great fun, got to go behind the scenes at a few of the animal enclosures at Durell Zoo and had lectures from some very interesting people ^^ Somewhat more importantly I finally got to see a maned wolf! (yayness)... I've been to so many collections where they have these and never seen one till now! That's only because we could go wandering after the official closing times and see them feeding at dusk. I was really impressed, even more fascinating than I thought. We had to do a behaviour study on an animal of our choice - I chose Aye-aye as I don't really know much about them. They've now become a bit of an obsession, theyre beautiful in an ugly kind of way ^^ We watched a female called Zaza for a few minutes each day we were there - got to speak to her keeper and ask questions about her enrichment etc. It was an experience

We also got to do some enrichment for the macaques - involving oranges and leaves filled with jelly and pulses/nuts. We had fun for about 30mins making them - true there was a lot of messing around too... but they took only 10-15mins destroying them lol. Still it was fun watching/listening to their happy chattering as they did so lol. Anyway.. theres some photos of this event posted up as well as some of the other animals we encountered on this trip - missing are a lot of the aye-aye which although came out ok I didnt feel should go up here, a lot of the bears and orangs - and lots of the people that were on the trip - these are on facebook for those that i feel should want to see them

Finally booked my flight to Malawi (woot) for 2nd June - 16th July sooo I will be away for a long time in those dates (unless i can get to a pc with the net in Africa hehe). I'm sooo excited! YAY!

You can pick which charity you wish to give money to as well so its not always the big charities that win, its who you want to! Also theres a competition for a nationwide (UK) advertising campaign for the charity who gets the highest donation by 14th April... a great way for the little charities to get a big push!

I am currently clicking for The Aspinall Foundation (Howletts and Port Lympne) which is situated in the South East of England and works to release endangered animals like black rhino and gorillas back into the wild

Soooo I decided last night that I WAS going to brave the 2hr drive to Colchester on my own without satnav and I left and moreorless got there without incident (go me!). I hate the M25 btw urrrg! Stupid Dartford tunnel >.< Anyway it took me around 2hrs to get there and then I remembered that although its not half-term where I live some schools break up a week before us and found the zoo swamped with children meh! Still I had around 6hrs in which to get round (and not kill any screaming/banging on glass kids - tho trust me I was soooo tempted). I treated myself to a Gold ticket which is basically a "get in free for a year" thing for Colchester and lots of other zoos around the country

As I was on my own all day I kind of got a bit carried away with the photographs... with mixed results... the light was a bit crappy all day Though I did go back to several of the animals in the evening and had better outcome. Still I got to see what I wanted... baby aardvark and baby giant anteater! omg i've never seen anything so cute!

I will upload some of my favourite pics, but seriously there were SO many I couldnt possibly upload all the good ones heh. Anyway... will be visiting zoos more all in the name of "research" for my course of course... *nods* heh any excuse eh? ^^

On a side note today is the 5th aniversary of my boy Vike being put down He was the best dog ever (tho don't tell Midge) and still miss him. If that wasn't enough... I may be able to do my final year dissertation whilst i'm out there... on cheetah! the organiser has said she will try to sort it so I can spend a week at a rehab centre looking after cheetah and doing rescues in the field when needed, and then spend the final week with the ranger course group who are doing tracking, releasing, game capture and other exciting stoof... I just really hope I get to do the cheetah stuff, I'll be bouncing for years after, although I'll be itching to go back out again, just like I am now

I currently only have 3 free days to do stuff atm, and most of that seems to be taken up with running after parents and animals so not much time to do anything still However I have been setting aside at least an hour a day for drawing and having the tablet helps a lot! will hopefully be keeping this up and will be more drawn uploads coming soon

I just got my new laptop (YAY) so I can do work without getting really frustrated with the lack of charging ^^

Take care all, another update in a few weeks!
Kitty hugs
Ora x

100 Pic Challenge

Complete: 6/100
Last updated: 1st February

1.
Soooo Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all!! I know I'm a little bit late there I hope all had a nice xmas with lots of sweets and cake and things!

I've been busy with assignments before the holidays and now revision for exams in January Not much time for zoo visits or drawing but as I keep saying I shall make time to upload more often. Colchester zoo have announced a baby giant anteater and from the early pictures on their site it looks sooo cute... I'm planning on running up to see it before he gets beyond the baby stage

I've been to see Wicked (at last!) and it was brilliant! A new obsession starting there... shall be going to London a lot more often now dammit... thats another musical to add to my repeat list >.< Although with another trip to Africa looming perhaps I should restrain myself ^^

I said before I had more Africa photos to upload... I do... but due to a series of problems with my 6mnth old PC... ranging from dead batteries to corrupted harddrives (WTF?!) I lost all the photos on the pc and had to send it off to a friend to get them back (the place I had bought it from were trying to charge me over £100 for the pleasure... a wonderful PCWorld that in the last 3 visits I have had a beyond poor customer service but that another matter... anyway I managed to get my photos back and currently trying to find time to sort them all out again Stupid PCWorld... stupid computer... stupid lack of time >.<

Enough mummbling *slaps self*

Ok, so i never uploaded more Africa pics... I havent really had the time what with assignments and stuff atm I HAD to go to a zoo to do one of them... oh dear such a shame! hehe. Decided to go to one I have never been to so I made the 2ish hour trip to Colchester! Possibly one of the best zoos i have been to. We were looking specifically at how the zoo relates to a huge world strategy document so had to look at all the signs and take photos of them, we managed to annoy several people by taking pictures of empty cages and leaving them standing there looking for the animal! mwahaha. They seem to be doing a lot for conservation, which is excellent and as it should be for all zoos.

There was a huge variety of species there, including some I have never seen in captivity before: like fossa, blue eyed lemur, orangutans, amur leopard, white tigers, cheetah, striped hyena. They have a hands on approach where they allow visitors to feed some of the animals at certain times of the day. We stuck around the Africa section at such a time and got to hand feed one of the elephants! Awesome experience although I can see some people being against such an oportunity... however from an exotic management p.o.v (considering thats why i was there XD ) the elephants were well looked after and if this helps kids get enthusiastic about elephants and help to conserve them in the future good for them! <3

I will certainly be going again, and recommend it to anyone that is near to it There will be more pics to come eventually (a few today) of both Africa and Colchester. Maybe soon I will have a chance to do more drawing too >.<

Got back from South Africa late last night after a 12hr delay at Durban (urg). Think I was the only one that didn't want to come home It's so beautiful out there and the wildlife is simply beyond words. Even the impala which we saw around almost everybend is something I miss terribly The guides that were with us at every step were fantastic and we met so many influential, inspiring people along the way, including Ted and Ann Riley! Such an honour to have spent a lot of time with them, and having lectures by them. An amazing trip.. loads of photos to come - i want to go back!

More photos to come tomorrow - or later today

I've uploaded a few (there were far too many to upload all of them) with more to come once i've installed PSP or something on my pc again.

I will be off the Africa this Saturday! Keep getting these little flashes of excitement, but don't think it will actually sink in till i'm at the airport. Been waiting so long for this that i can't believe its happening! There will of course be hundreds of pics to upload on my return, but till then I shall have to bid you all farewell for 2weeks ^^

As it's been nearly a month thought it was about time for an update of sorts. Work was extended a few weeks to cope with new students starting so I have still been busy with that. I have however been offered a supervising position, which will mean I have work some weekends and over school holidays which is cool. Once this block of work has finished i'll have lots of free days which I plan to use to go to as many local wildlife parks as possible ^^.

It's just over a month till Africa! It's still not really sunk in, but I've had my injections and been slowing buying all the stuff for it. Still have the fun part of buying a new camera to mark the occasion

I've been struggling to start any kind of pic today Which is highly frustrating as I've got the whole day off *grumble* Damn artists block

Next pointless update to come in a few weeks i guess
Editedit: I've decided to start the 100 pic challenge that I first noticed a few months ago... the challenge is as follows:

The rules

1.) Make 100 pics each pic having a theme listed below. Each pic should have ONE and only ONE theme to it, for it to count.

2.) No time limit so have fun

3.) The main picture should be drawn but not limited to. for all fair purposes, people are allowed to use their paint programs and photo shop to create the pic.

3a.) pics should be of own artistic ability. You may not edit photos, or break any other rules set out in the Da etiquette policy. Your pics can be anything from sketches and doodles to great master pieces. Just have fun with it.

4.) The list below is to be placed somewhere in your journal for others to see that......
A.)You are in the challenge
B.)What you have completed

5.) make sure to update this list and check off what is done and make a link to the pic

Quick update as its been so long....

Not been able to do much drawing lately as i've started uni which adds to the ever growing list of things that sadly become more important than spending time colouring pics to upload.

One excellent thing to come out of starting uni however is a chance to go to Africa!!! ^.^ So in October i'll be flying out for 2 weeks of OMG dream come trueness! Don't think its actually sunk in that im going yet... maybe something to do with the fact that ive not fully paid (eep). Its going to be a fantastic experience... going through East Coast reserves... Mohololo Rehab Centre, Krugar National Park and Whale Watching on the coast! And im guaranteed to see cheetahs and wild dogs! *boggle* Breeding centre for cheetahs and wild dogs and getting involved with the educational side of Africa both the people and getting people to understand Endangered animals = hand reared cheetah = YAY (although yes... i believe there is some part of this that is wrong... but the cheetah is used to educate african farmers to protect the species rather than kill it).

Anyway... yeah thats what im looking forward to this year, and its going to be a fantastic opportunity for some wonderful wildlife shots... if only i can get myself a decent camera in time

Hopefully more pics to come soon, dependant on essays and exams and whatnot... but for now... byeeee

After much slacking and not much else, i've finally decided to upload some of the photos I took at Chessington zoo late in June. I've gone through a lot of them and started to upload the better ones - loads more to come eventually. Lions, leopards and gorillas done erm sealions, meerkats, tigers and spider monkeys to come when I next can Hoping to go back to either Chessington or Howletts to get some better/more shots or some different species. Yet to get the bearcat at Chessington one im determined to get a pic of Plus Chessington are getting baby skunks in the next few weeks and I can only imagine how cute they must be hehe.

Anyways... until next time.

Time for another update mayhaps... I've been working recently on my portfolio in forsight of a possible interview i may have with an art college - if i ever get round to finish that bleeping UCAS form *shudder* That explains the sudden upload of life drawing images - the one I actually wanted to post up here is too big for my scanner so gotta try and find the digital camera hehe...

Erm what else... thanks to a certain person (Eggy... *glares* ) I have now gotten obsessed with EQ again... well I say obsessed... im playing it again. Nowhere near as much as I did but I've got the bug again. Its his fault btw because he paid for my sub for this month (damn him). I've also got WoW back, what can I say... I'm weak!

Anydoodle... I'll be oft to do some random nothingness I guess.

I've kinda had another move. Things didn't really work out up North. A disagreement over a dog and a carpet (*rolls eyes*) meant that it was either me or the dog therefore the dog won and me and him returned back South. I wasnt really liking it away from here anyway, I mean sure the independance was great! But i really missed my friends down here. So anyway thats the main reason behind my no updates I guess. Pics of the dog to follow

I'm currently on my 2nd day of WoW sub cancellation *boggle* It's amazing to think I've gone this long voluntarily... maybe It's cos I've got my friends so kindly on msn with me Anyway so WoW is cancelled till I get the money the wonderful British government owe me *sigh* Till I get a job - fix my car - pay back money i owe (meh!) and erm other stuff. So far though I'm quite proud of myself, I have some moeny in the bank... so I COULD resub but I'm trying my hardest to stop myself, so far with some help from a close friend i've succeeded. OMG im making it sound like a drug or something lol damn Evercrack and Wowcrack (i guess?) Hmm yeah anyway, with no WoW I guess my drawing will be coming back to a pretty obsessive lvl at least Anywho guess I'll shut up now

Well for a lil while anyways. Recovering from my move to the North a few weeks ago - finding i've forgotten half my stuff from the old house including my scanner cd which means ive had to ninja the use of my friends. Damn pakard bell not believing my scanner needs drivers (apparently my model doesnt actually exist so ive not been able to download them >.< ).

My birds managed the move ok and seem to have settled down well now. Ollie is just as noisey as ever - having great pleasure in now beeping everytime someone walks in / out of a room. Sirius didnt seem at all phased by the move and is jsut his cheery lil self. Bless him

Sooo whilst I'm still trying to sort out job/internet access im gonna have a lot more time on my hands in which i can finally sort out my huge pile of "to do" pics So expect some more uploads pretty soon.

Sooo I've been back from Scotland almost a week now and I've not done anything here or sketchyness since i have. I loved my time alone (whilst it lasted) and it was great to finally meet some old friends i'd only previously known online for the first time. I've met ppl I've known from EQ before but this time it was so special to me as I met someone i've known almost 3yrs and never thought I'd pluck up courage to actually go that far to meet him.

The few days I was in Scotland changed my life a lot and I hope that it was only in a good way. I took a few risks which have helped get a lot off my chest and for the first time in a long while I felt happy. That never lasts tho and being back home things have got back to normal - I cant wait to move to Newcastle in the new year will be so good to get away from everything down South.

Anyway thats the main reason for me not posting much recently, very hectic atm working to save up for Christmas and moving plus my Scottish holiday Will be updating everything like I said in November asap no promises as to when tho
Not uploaded much in the last week or so, I have been doing sketches and drawings just not finished them off or uploaded them yet Mainly because I've been slacking but I have also been away. Had a very busy few weeks and an even more hectic one coming up.

Went to see my prospective new house in Newcastle ^^ (froze my ass off up there too *grumble* ). Other than the slight language barrier (damn Northeners!!! j/k) it was a fun experience and very much looking forward to when I do finally move up there.

Nxt week im off to Scotland for 4days ^^ Where I will freeze even more but I will get to meet a few old close friends at last sooo I am sure that will make up for the gloomy weather Will try to catch up on my uploads before I go on Tuesday if not there will be a ton inc when I return Oh and its my 21st on Wednesday soooo if I survive that evening too hehe

After 9mnths without it ive returned to EQ for how long we shall have to wait and see but I'm enjoying it again atm and it makes a good break from WoW too I'm on a bit of an artistic streak atm hence the sudden activity here hopefully it will continue for a while yet.

I've gone through a pretty tough time the last few weeks. I lost my remaining (4) gerbils and my rabbit within the space of a few weeks leaving me with just the two birds now. Feels kinda empty without any properly huggable pets anymore but I've made up for that with my SQUIDGY THING! (see featured).
