Hi there deviants!
Some weeks ago I discovered an interesting and very funny-looking photo-technique: Tilt-Shift-Photography (Wikipedia: [link]). Most interesting: The miniature-faking.

Before I go further into detail - here are my tries with it:

As you can see - everything looks like toys. :)

Originally these pictures were made by tilting the lense. But since these tilt-shift-lenses are veeeery expensive - I did it digitally by blurring specific parts of the image.

Some advices from my side ...
Optimal conditions for the source image:
- elevated position
- only few dof-blur (since you want to add blur by yourself)
- bright sunlight with hard shadows
- high contrast + intensive colors
Basically the same conditions when you would photograph your model trains (or some miniature city, .. whatever).

Would be glad to see some results by anyone :)

I will now try to upload lots of images to get the gallery up to date to my current "progress" (for example the "Trains of the past" series - just look in my gallery :) )

I also wanted to start some kind of photography feature every month. Hope I'll find my time for this. There are lots of great unrecognized photographer herer on dA.

At the moment I don't have a camera. That's really a strange feeling... I am getting so "unbalanced". Maybe I use this chance an play around with an analog one from my Dad. Could be fun. But using a dark room takes so much time - we will see.

Exams


I was very inactive the last weeks/months. There is a lot of work to do for the exams and in my residence ;) I'm really sorry about that. So here is a little update for you!



Saxony Bath


I had the pictures on my harddrive for quite some time. Now I thought they are worth sharing.
I made them in the Sachenbad (Saxony Bath) in Dresden. The bath was built in 1928 and closed in 1994 for remedial actions. It's still decaying... but a great place to photograph.

Check out the pictures. I hope I could catch the atmosphere in there. It was a trip which really left a mark...

I saw that my journal still said "Welcome 2008" - That is a little bit embarassing, so I decided to make a new one. I hope weather will get warmer the next weeks so I can make some photos outside. I'm getting sick of making indoor phtos :|
So what is on my to-do-list regarding photography?
To buy: Maybe a new DSLR (D60 or D80 or ...), macro lense, zoom lense, ... I think that's already too much for my budget this year ;)
To shoot: "painting with light" (this is fun!), urban structures (garbage, fences, beams, whatever), some macro shots (I have already some ideas), some people asked me to do portrait and nude photography (I guess I need a softbox ...), ... you see there are a lot of ideas - it only needs to be done :)

I'm not the kind of guy which makes fixed "good intentions" for the next year, but here are a few things which come to my mind:

:bulletred: Do more for the studies (I won't do it anyway ;) )

:bulletred: Spend more time outside / in nature.

:bulletred: Do more and different kind of photography

:bulletred: Speak more (sounds silly but there are some days where I speak less than 100 words ;) )

:bulletred: Get (more) active in environmentalism

:bulletred: And convince other people to respect nature - it's really a shame what happens - people need a new way of thinking - I could talk for hours about that ... won't help I guess.

I'm still alive!


Hi everybody!
At first thank you for your support - even if I'm nearly never online. I still have no internet at my new resident which is ... quite uncomfortable. I try to upload some photos from time to time - but I don't spend so much time for it as I used to want ... I hope you can accept this for some weeks. By christmas it will be better I swear!

"The storm" ... There was a gigantic storm in germany. I've never experienced something like that. (I heard it was the heaviest storm in germany ever) I went out for a walk to get a little bit "fresh air". It was unbelievable: Trees were knocked over - no electricity - no light in the streets - lightning at the horizon. - Like apocalypse or something.
Here are some of my impressions (the storm was nearly over when I took the photos - I didn't want to take my cam with me when I walked out for the first time - which was a good choice).

I'd like to make a little "project". At the moment, I'm playing around with Apophysis - a fractal generator.
The work I did is nothing special - but it's some kind of interesting and fascinating - especially creating it.
Make art / something beautiful out of a formula ... ;)

So I would like to share some of my first attempts. I made most of them during the last months. They are very simple. But nevertheless I think they are really nice to look at. - Maybe just beacause they are such simple. :)

I am now a Deviantart subscriber. There are some really nice features you get. But I think the reason I subscribed was to support DeviantArt with my money in it's developement.

Isn't it amazing how many new deviations are submitted daily on dA?
That the amount of people who are interested in dA increases daily?
And the fact that so many artists have found a platform to dicuss and present their work to others?


Without a doubt it's a big, interesting and versatile community.
But isn't it amazing to always see the same artists on the frontpage every single day concerning the fact that so many new deviations have been submitted?

We're all aware of that and believe that this has to change. It is already quite difficult for the "unknown" artists to promote their work and gain more attention.

Clearly, we do not intend to deny the skills of those great artists who enrich the community by sharing their magnificent work. But we do intend to enhance the platform in such a way that "unknown" artists might get a real chance to draw the public attention to their own pieces of work by promoting it on the front page of the community.

In our opinion we think it unjust to only have the chance to be represented on the front page if one has the luck of having many watchers.

We would like a better system which allows a deviation to be seen on the front page if, for example, it has 'only' reached about 40 favourites and about 200 views.

Take a look at the actual situation: You have uploaded an impressive piece or art that gets faved according to the number of your total views/watchers. Then, however, a more popular deviant uploads a more or less 'average' deviation and automatically reaches more than the double of your favourites/views in a mere moment.

A new structure of the frontpage could enhance the actual competition on dA, i.e. popular deviants wouldn't be able to best the "unknown" artists by posting a rather average deviation.

A reasonable alternative to present the "daily top favourites" on the front page would be a bigger amount of thumbs which would show the 40 best deviations of the day in a random order.

We think it's in everyone's interest to change the current situation and make dA a place where creating and sharing unique art plays a far bigger role than scrambling for new watchers.

So only a little bit about me (I wonder if someone will read this ... :( - no comments ... :cry:).
One of my "activities" (or crazy hobby) is writing a diary. I think it will be some kind of interesting in some years.
I write in german of course - so here is a little excerp I wrote in english:

Long time ago there was a time where Philip wrote his diary daily. It seems that these days are gone. What is wrong? Is this a new era? The beginning of the end. Or just a little scratch on the record of life. I don’t know.
So far. Due my lack in speaking English I decided to write this report in this (more or less) beautiful language. Another reason is that I have to use English very often in my new “job” (Waah! – Koreans everywhere :)).
Yesterday I went to the Arctic Monkeys in the “Alter Schlachthof” – no, wait! The “old slaughterhouse” – yo! I met lots of people: Svenni, Joshua (without his lovely skirt ;)), Paddy, Bella, Naddi, Rob, … The music was really great just as the people. People: good. Too many people: bad. Sometimes I feared to choke. Lots of pushing, pulling, jumping, poking, falling … a little bit annoying – but it seems that’s the usual behavior. Nevertheless – the evening was worth the money.
What else? In the IPMS [Note: Fraunhofer Institute for Photonics Microsystems. I'm here since 2 weeks as a trainee] I’m growing to an allrounder. No more standing behind the pro’s and “learning by seeing”. Now everyone want my helping hand to relieve themselves. Hehe – lazy guys – just scientists. At the moment I’m working for 5 different people. But that’s OK. I can pick the most interesting offer and can really help.
Already finish? Humm. I got a new “Pearl Jam” CD, a broken digicam and no present for Mother’s Day. So – nothing special ;-)
Hey! It was not so hard to write my mind-blowing article, but nevertheless exhausting. Now I just need a fenzy outro in English...
