Hello, all!

Recently updated with 10 shots which are all taken from film negatives or print scans that I've been meaning to upload for a while - all of which were taken a few years ago, a few of which were developed by me int he dark room! Hope you enjoy them!

I've got out of the habit of taking photographs lately as I just haven't had the time or oppertunities, so I've not got anything in the way of new material yet - although this will come soon hopefully! I'm going to endeavour to diversify my gallery and try new things. Particularly portraiture, amongst other things.
Also, I'm hopefully getting a DSLR soon, now I can afford it! \m/
Theres an astonishing amount of talent out there on Deviantart, hidden amongst everything else. Visit random deviants and you might just find a gem! I spent a few hours clicking this, and seeing what I'd stumble upon. I have it bookmarked, now - and give it a click in moments of boredom. It really is worth it! Just browsing generally also turns up some fabulous images.
Heres a small selection of what I found, for your viewing pleasure. I must admit I favoured photography, here.

Hello, everyone!

After a brief break, this journal (with the snazzy new header that should hopefully work! EDIT: It doesn't. I think you have to be a subscriber or something.) should herald a time when I'll update more regularly, and with less. Or rather, less at once.
New dA design, new updating habits! Might just work!

I've just got back from spending a week in a field with 5000 christians as part of the Newday Christian Conference which was, quite honestly, awesome! I won't bore you with talking about it. Sadly, photography wasn't allowed in the venues because of child protection issues, so I couldn't take many pictures.
Thats where the journal title is from - thats the event slogan. Its great seeing so many people fired up for Christ!

I've still got a load of film negatives and home-done prints to scan in and put up, so those are on their way soon - and the fund to save up for a DSLR is looking nice and healthy! Been hard work to get here though.

So yeah. Lots of exciting stuff happening...but as yet, no new pictures!

You guys are great.

Through the darkness of my submission spree (135 later) we see the glimmer of the sun rising, and hopefully an end to my usual method of taking too many pictures and then uploading too many pictures, all at once.

I'm sorry. I really am ¬_¬
Those lovely people that watch me had their inboxes completely assualted by my onslaught of new deviations!
I hope you lot enjoyed them all! Thats my last update for a while (well, until I go through my folders again, and scan in the negatives and prints that I've got that I want to use. Bwaha)
Hopefully I haven't sacrified quality in the quantity (although I hadn't updated before this in literally a year)
I hate the fact that I go through phases of being satisfied and disatisfied with my photography. About 112 deviations in, the thought crossed my mind "Wait...what if all this is crap?!" before I shut myself up and carried on ¬_¬
Cough. Heres hoping.

I hope you enjoy my gallery! Stick around and take a look, and thanks for your patience.
Journal title comes from a track called Proterra by Runrig, if you cared. The lyrics are very cool indeed.

Because I've just finished updating all my existing profile, every single last picture. They're all there, hopefully much cleaner and with better contrast and sharpness than before, when I tended to over-do things.

Because I've got a ton of new material to upload. As an example of this, the first Heybridge Basin series picture, which is the first posted picture from my Canon A95 (It was the day I got it) Is number 0012 on the disk. Since then, my camera readout now says 2738. Theres a ton of new material (literally. Its going to be quite a job sifting through it to find the decent stuff!) that I want you to see, and among that there is bound to be some corkers. Stands to reason that I can't get it wrong all of those times ¬_¬

So stick around - theres plenty of new stuff on the horizon. Maybe even a little closer.

Edit-tastic!

Some numbers for you. I quite like numbers, some times.

D:\Photography = 3124 files in 72 folders @ 4.07gb on disk.
Current Deviation count = 152

I've made the "first pass" (no doubt I've missed stuff going through the folders, so I'll go back over it all later to see if theres anything else decent) over my 72 folders'o'crap to see what there is new that I can upload for your viewing pleasure.
I've made a folder, which has the processed stuff in it.
First pass = 135 new deviations. And I don't think I'm even done yet. That alone will almost double my total count, bringing it to 287. I'm scared.

I've got a whole load of negatives and photographs I developed manually (like, with the smelly chemicals and everything) that I want to scan and put up here.

I've now got the fun (HA!) task of uploading this lot through deviantarts rather irritatingly convoluted submission system.
But yeah, its on its way. I'll try to do them about 10 at a time or something, so your watchboxes don't get completely overloaded ¬_¬

HANG ON TIGHT, KIDS.

Thanks for your patience. I really need to stop this habit of submission - long long empty periods, followed by bouts of intense activity. Which means that a lot of my stuff isn't looked at as it takes a lot more effort to sift through a hundred odd submissions than it does two.
I'm stupid, okay?

Hey everyone!

Just to give you a heads-up about an awesome thing called deviant link ([link]) which is basically photographical chinese whispers, and is a great way to improve your photographic eye. Go there. They are awesome. Round two is in progress, so you'll have to wait till the next round to sign up.

Which you should, you know. You should do it furiously.

In other news, my first exam of four is over, meaning that it won't be long till I can start uploading all my new stuff - and refreshing all the older stuff with reoptimised versions. This will fill all my watchers (all of you! hah. not that theres many ¬_¬) watchboxes up with new submissions - about 300 possibly, so I'll note you all closer to the time so you can turn off the new deviation detection thingy for my profile. Don't do it yet! Closer to the time

In other other news, it was amazingly foggy yesterday (at least down on Plymouth Hoe) with sea-mist and visibility was only about 10 metres, which was awesome. But! Whilst taking pictures of said fog, I noticed a small dark spot on my camera, in the internals - the exact same problem I had with my second Fujifilm E550, albeit smaller. I thought I'd got it because I was walking around in the damp fog, and got suitably pissed off with myself, but looking back at older photographs, it appears I've had it since August last year ¬_¬ Obviously noticable, then!
But bah. *shakes fist* Curses!
Watch this space.

Update, 28th March.

I'm, like, considering saving up for a DSLR and stuff. Specifically, the Canon 350D because I'm informed that it rawks and you can't beat it for the money. S'going to take ages to save up though, on my studenty budget.

Now that is exciting.

Chemistry exam today, and stuff. Then I've got roughly four days free before I go home, so I've got a bit of scope to get out and take some interesting shots there.

Rargh. What else was I going to say...Oh, yes. There might be a major rejigging of my gallery in the not so distant future, so this is an advance apology for any resubmissions that you might get clogging up your Watchbox, if you watch me.

Play safe, kids!

Life! Integral Memory sent me a replacement memory card for my camera, so I'm now the proud owner of an i-pro 512mb card with 48x (6.0mb/sec) write speed, sadly sans 100 zoo photos. But I'm going back over the christmas hols to do it all over again! hurrah!
Uni is going great - the course is interesting, the city is fun and exciting, I've made loads of great friends ...etc!
Who'd have thunk that on the bit of rocky coast below the Hoe at plymouth there is more phylaic biodiversity per square metre than there is in the entire amazon rainforest. now THATS amazing. I caught a velvet swimming crab, a blenny (fish) and starfish ranging from common to cushion and brittlestars.
Also, snakelocks anenomies!
What an awesome degree.
Anyway, I've been taking quite a few photos and have quite an extensive series of sky shots (West country (UK) skies are simply breathtaking) that I'll be able to process and upload at christmas, along with series from Maldon at home, and a few others that I never got round to doing. So - plenty of new material coming! and I'm hopefully getting a laptop for christmas so I'll be able to keep it coming too as I wont have to wait till the holidays to empty my cards!
This, I see, can only be good news.
I've realised that I've got a growing passion for wildlife photography - landscapes are nice, as is still life and macro, but I feel the greatest challenge is photographing animals and things that really dont want to sit still for you to compose it well. Thats where I hope to be taking my work next, into the realm of all things living! hence the zoo visit, as its not really the easiest thing to start doing. Rocky shores are diverse, but theres no real challenge finding the organisms if you're fast enough to grab them!
I dont really know what else to say, really, apart from the fact that I
a) need to take more photos
b) need to take more different, diverse photos!
c) need to upload them so people other than me can enjoy them! after all, whats the point of them sitting on my memory card for months on end?

Have fun, and I'll catch you all soon!
Ive been tagged by TheBaron! ([link])
How crazy! Take a look at his fantabulous gallery of photography, and cunning manipulations. Also, he's a great guy.
Now, as far as I can see, this means I have to put down 20 interesting things about myself!

1. I can lick my elbow!
2. I have terrible vision (-9 and -8 in both eyes. bah!)
3. I also love being hugged! (Baron does too)
4. I've never broken a bone, although I once sprained my ankle trying to smack a ball into a fence. Yes, true story.
5. I'm a marine biologist! Or at least Im studying it.
6. My favourite food is pasta, with anything. It just goes with anything. ANYTHING!
7. I have a great love of animals - and in fact I'd love to be a wildlife photographer , I just dont know how to start!
8. I'm quite shy really, although once I get going I'm talkative...
9. ...and singative! I once sang a latin four-part chorale in front of 300 people. It was heavenly!
10. I only own four DVDs - arent I the weird one!
11. I'm extremely flexible - I can bend my fingers past 90° with my hand and lay my upper arm completely flat along my shoulders -try it!
12. I can lick my elbow! True story! so, the next person to tell you its impossible say "NO! SMI CAN!" and they'll be all like "who the feck is Smi?" So thats probably not a great idea.
13. Food is tasty. I have cravings for chocolate, and, thinking about it, typing that in a food-free computer lab probably wasnt the wisest of ideas. Ooh.
14. I love PC Gaming, and have been without a computer since early september. THE PAIN! (only joking. I miss it, but no where near that much) If im honest, I really miss fragging my friends in UT2004.
15. I really want to go scuba diving! its just so expensive to learn, if Im honest. Im a poor impoverished student now!
16. I'm too passionate. How does that work, I hear you cry? I tend to get too attached to things, see. even material posessions, so I'm a hoarder at heart. throwing things away is painful.
17. Im a christian! ROCK ON! God is great. Look out the window at the world outside ( I hope you have a nice view) and see how beautiful it is.
18. I can play the piano! Grade 6 standard, and had to perform for 20 minutes infront of a few hundred people for my A-level in music - and then the exam board lost it. cest la vie, I guess!
19. My only phobia is an irrational fear of being trapped underwater - so drowning, I guess. Nothing else really bothers me that much.
20. I prefer a quiet pint down the pub to going out getting drunk at clubs. thus, uni nightlife is quite tricky. doesnt mean I'm not opposed to busting some moves down at ...down a...

Well, Im off to university in plymouth, and I wont have a PC for the first term, at least.
This means till christmas, there will sadly be no more updates from me as I wont have any way to edit the pictures I take, let alone take them off my digital camera. I guess I'll just have to be selective with my 199 pictures!

I have recently taken three or four sets of photos that are yet to be "Processed" but I have under two weeks to do it in. I shall endevour to upload as much as I can (of the best stuff) to tide me over, so to speak, until I get back.
An update. Unfortunately, it doesnt look like I'll get time to update what with everything and getting ready for uni, so my gallery wont change for a few months.
On another note, I went to the zoo yesterday which ROCKED and was most amazing. I had taken about 100 photos when my compact flash card died for no apparent reason, so I've lost that lot. Not only is that annoying, its also quite...saddening, in some respects. I can only think about what I've lost, not the 13 that I managed to get on my 32mb card.
Its completely buggered. Well, that'll teach me to buy cheaper branded memory.

So, shame that I wont get time to update.

So long, I'll pop back from time to time!

Also, I've got over 1000 page views! Thanks to everyone whos supported me over this time, and I look foward to my return with loads of new material (albeit on a new card. sniff)

Im a mentalist, I know. Enjoy all the new work, expect loads more coming in the not so distant future with my new camera!

Also, on the inspiration thing, more recently I find myself walking around like Im looking for photos. My mind seeks them, seeks their composition in where I am. Its a strange state of mind to be in, and particularly annoying when I dont have a camera.
Places to go: Heybridge Basin, Denjy Peninsula, Hammersmith and City line (the old old above ground bits), Paddington station. Crazy stuff.

Hallo!

Well, at the moment, my photographic inspiration is at an all time high. I'm literally itching to get out and take loads of photos - but the irritating thing is, my camera had to go back, and I've only just ordered a new one!
Yes, I finally chose. Seeing as my budget was the major restriction, the best choice by far in terms of quality and manual controls was the Canon Powershot A95, so thats what I've gone for. Sadly, its not the DSLR of my dreams (for shame!) but at least now I'll have a camera that can take decent quality pictures (without breaking. Fujifilm, take note)

Recently on the BBC, theres been a series called Coast where a group of presenter types (historians, biologists, that sort of thing) go around the entire coastline of Great Britain and basically talk about it. Things of interest, like Landsend, The Giants Causeway, the big shipyards in Belfast, Moorcombe bay, thats sort of thing. and its been really quite amazingly inspiring.
I have a deep love of the sea, particularly in the West Country (for those that dont know or arent UK residents, thats the...well, its the bit in the south west. Cornwall, Devon and Dorset) where I actually feel more at home than here in Essex. I love just standing on the rocks, hearing the waves thundering into the hard granite, beeing sprayed by the surf crashing off the rocks below. Sorry, I'm getting carried away in the rhetoric.
The thing is, Coast (i.e. the program) has inspired me greatly. Hugely. Enourmously! To go out and take photos of the coastline, or less specifically, just landscape photography.
I love the textures you get on the coastline, of beaches and driftwood, and rusting metal. Its beautiful. And so changing. you could visit a beach every day of the year and not a single day would be the same. And the smell! Sadly not capturable on film. again, Im getting carried away.
Well, I think I'll stop there. Even now, Im feeling a yearning to be near the sea! Its crazy! So thats what I plan to do: go out and take tons and tons (my new camera is coming with a 512mb CF card!) of landscape photography, with as much coastal pictures as I can possibly manage. I'd love to do what the BBC have done and go round the entire coast, but this sadly, in all realms of actual possibility, is not possible!

To summarise: Inspired by the sea!

"And remember, in Great Britain, you're never more than 73 miles from the sea"

Photos from my holiday on Paxos are coming soon. On second looks, they arent as bad as I thought they were (in terms of focus - the AF was playing up) and also this up-coming landscape stuff I just babbled on about for too long!

I'm going to ring fuji, then send it back to amazon for replacement. if the next one goes wrong, well...three strikes. you're out, fuji.

So, as of tommorow, I am officially closed for business, sort of. Okay, thats probably not the best way to put it. But anyway, There'll be lots of updating and resubmitting going on, so...appologies for filling up your watch folders, people that do. I'll put out another journal entry when I'm done. Tommorow is busy busy day, and I have to say, I am really really looking forward to getting this lot up to scratch, AND taking loads of great photos.
I have lots stashed to update, but now need to diversify somewhat from the humble macro shot into wider and greater places!

Theory of the Unphotographable, and disatisfaction

This is just something I've been meaning to write for a while.

Firstly, my camera has been sent back to amazon for replacement, and hopefully I'll be ordering a tripod soon for more photographic goodness.

Now, the real thing;
I have this theory, based on observations, that some things are just simply not able to be photographed. The human mind is a startlingly amazing creation, and even looking out the window now, the colours of the trees, the shape of the branches against the sky, and the gentle fluff of the clouds - looks amazing. its beautiful. Yet point a camera at it and it becomes just another shot.
For example, I recently tried to take a picture of some beautiful shapes in clouds, and the way the evening sun was casting a vivid yellow-orange over it. Yet, try as I might, the form was indistinct, and it just didnt work.
Likewise, with macro shots of insects. The damn things seem to prefer flying away before I can actually take the photo.
Now, I know this is probably more due to my inneptitude more than anything else, but the point still stands. the Human brain is also very good at phasing out things it doesnt want to see. Power lines, houses between the trees (unless they actually look beautiful) - often you dont notice them till you start seeing rather than looking, if that makes sense.

This is probably just a load of nonsense, but I firmly say now, that there are some things (at least, some things without a bucketload of skill and patience) that are just simply not possible to compose in a photograph and still keep the interest and make it a good composition.

ANother example - pigeons displaying on the garage rooftop. Its an amazing display, like a slow dance. Try to take a picture, and you get an expanse of roof tiles.

So there you have it. Thats my crackpot theory, and from what other people have taken on here, I'd say it probably isnt true really. It just needs skill and patience. Regardless, eh?

Now the disatisfaction part. I find myself looking through all the photos I've taken and nothing really catches my eye, and draws me to it. I dont know if this is because I took them and its natural for the person who took them to not be satisfied, but they're just...same old same old really. I want to do more, better things. Above and beyond what I've done before. Less snapshots, more carefully composed art, to throw that word in. And it irritates me that I havent done it yet, because thats how my mind works.

Aaah, the tortured mind, eh?

7 days till all the exams are over!

Short note: Not long till June 28th now! thats when I can start work on re-updating all this!

long note: I got a great new camera for my birthday! Its a Fujifilm Finepix E550, with 4x optical zoom, 6.3 megapixels, the works. and it ROCKS! trouble is, its experiencing technical difficulties - a known problem with this model, apparently, where pictures taken outdoors (Ie in high light conditions) are all overexposed and have white horizontal lines accross them. No idea what causes it, but other people have also experienced the very same problem. I'll have to ring fujifilm on the morrow and ask their advice.

Tis a shame, because its an awesome camera so far, and I've taken loads of - what I think are - amazing macro shots. and I was just beginning to get the hang of it as well. Oooh.

I hope I dont have to send it back because I'm going to greece (flying fourth of July) so want to be able to take it with me.

Yo-ho-ahoy!

In just under a month, not only will I be 18, but I will have finished my A-level exams and will therefore have lots of time to take loads of photographs to stick up here. In fact, I've started taking them already and am stockpiling them in folders, ready for uploading.

Thing is, this is where I need your advice. I've been looking through my gallery and thinking that it needs a bit of work. I'm considering removing some of the photos, updating some of them, and simply making the place a bit fresher. The abstracty colourways series, for example, doesnt really represent what it is I'm going for any more. That is, striving towards interesting and provoking photography rather than just random snapshots.
So, do you think I should clear some stuff out? Have a bit of a fresh start? Obviously I'll leave behind the stuff that I'm satisfied with (being the flowers and moon shots, for example)

So, what do you think? Thanks in advance for your advice, if anyone sees this.

Yours,

Well, as usual, I havent updated in ages. Reason being I didnt do superbly in my January AS modules (okay, I flunked them) so I've been working doubly hard to get the grades up so I can go to the Uni I want. Also, I've been limited to an hour a day on the computer (evil Nazi parents. So to speak) so I havent had time for anything DA related. I occasionaly pop on and gasp at the quality of everyone elses stuff, though. yes.

Anyway, come July, it'll all be over. As soon as my exams are over, Im jetting away with my parents to the greek island of Paxos, for a two week wind down. It'll be bloody marvelous to have some space after all the revision

Anyway, point Im making is that July is my return. I shall have about 9 weeks after my exams before I go away (possibly. hopefully. Argh! I dont want to fail etc) to Uni, so will have lots of time to take lots of great photos and stuff.
And, now I've passed my driving test, I can go further afield to get them!
Hurrah!

I'll see you all in July, when PCGF-Smi has a new lease of life!
