Okay, so I kind of busted my butt for a month on my portfolio for my Strange Stories class. I got it back graded yesterday.

12 out of 12 points.

Not only that, but my prof emailed me after he'd had a look.
"Also, I'd like you to know that your portfolio has been nominated as one of the outstanding portfolios in the entire first-year class! A very small percentage receives nominations, maybe 5%. About 6 of those nominated will be chosen as "winners" by the Faculty Writing Committee sometime next semester. Winners get a nice bookstore gift certificate, usually. I think you have a fair chance of winning, and so I'm wishing you luck! Even if you don't win, you've been singled out – deservedly in my view – as one of the best new writers at Coe College!"

And not only that but he also recommended something else.
"Finally, I'd like to encourage you to submit your story for publication in the Coe Review," our college literary magazine.

Erm, for those who were around in summer 2007, remember "Walk the Night," that dinky little piece I wrote? That's the one he's talking about. I'm posting the new version right after I post this journal.

...Okay, I'm done bragging. Sorry.

Been over a month! ...Precisely a month, a week and a day, actually.

Lots of new developments--on spring break for one and loooooooving it. Chose a college: Coe College, Cedar Rapids, IA. Some other stuff.

I saw this and I am STEALING IT MERCILESSLY. Because I felt like it.
~~
1.Grab the book nearest to you, turn to page 18, and find line 4.
...*looks around* Psych text is closest... "in the human family." Second line of a Maya Angelou poem, "Human Family". As for closest NOVEL... Mercedes Lackey's The Otherworld... page 18 is the end of a chapter and is blank. >.<

2.Stretch your left arm out as far as you can. What do you reach?
My elbow hits the pole that's holding up the ceiling in the basement. Otherwise, air.

3. What is the last thing you watched on TV?
...I am proud to say I cannot remember.

4. Without looking, guess what time it is:
2:00

5. Now look at the clock. What is the actual time?
1:45

6. With the exception of the computer, what can you hear?
Ah the hum and thrum of the other computers. And Linus purring on my lap, and the sound his claws make as they knead my shirt.

7. When did you last step outside? What were you doing?
...Monday, to take out the catbox

8. Before you started this survey, what did you look at?
This survey on Tally's journal.

9. What are you wearing?
Almost-black navy blue sweatpants, an old Reader's Digest Word Power Challenge t-shirt from 8th grade that's almost too small, my watch, my glasses and a cat. Does he count?

10. Did you dream last night?
I wish I remembered them. I really really do. So I could tell my best friend.

11. When did you last laugh?
...Last night when I made an epic typo and my best friend said "Ask not for whom the Epic-Fail Flag waves... IT WAVES FOR THEE!"

12. What are on the walls of the room you are in?
Pale, pale green paint, a couple calendars, a couple posters and pictures... About it.

13. Seen anything weird lately?
Yes. The chat I had with my best friend and a friend of hers.

14. What do you think of this quiz?
...Not bad, not annoying.

15. What is the last film you saw?
Good question! I think... The Dark Knight, on Mom's birthday. Yeah.

16. If you became a multi-millionaire overnight, what would you buy?
A plane-ticket to Washington, D.C., an empty lot on a hill and the expertise to build a house on it to certain specifications, and the rest would pay bills and pay off my college.

18. If you could change one thing about the world, regardless of guilt or politics, what would you do?
Get people to realize how much money is being spent on stupidities and have that money directed elsewhere.

19. Do you like to dance?
When I have a good partner and/or good music.

20. George Bush:
No (printable) comment.

21. Imagine your first child is a girl, what do you call her?
Alexa Casey

22. Imagine your first child is a boy, what do you call him?
Zander Casey

23. Would you ever consider living abroad?
...Possibly. Might be nice, actually.

24. What do you want God to say to you when you reach the pearly gates?
"Whatever made you think you needed a note?"

25.Tag six people who must also do this in THEIR journal:
Whoever wants to.

You know what's weird? It is *checks watch* 2:13:18 in the morning and I am absolutely not tired at all. Last night it wasn't until THREE that a sleepy Ekai convinced me to go to bed.

Ekai is a character of mine, for those who don't know. Like most of my characters, he lives in my head, and takes up a bit of my mind at all times. Last night, he wanted to use the rest of my mind as a blanket and teddy bear. Thus getting the rest of me to bed despite what I had to say about it.

Anyway. What's odd is that, right about now on any other day, I'd be doing more than yawning occasionally. For one thing, I wouldn't be NEARLY so coherent.

I've mostly been spending this time since my friends went to bed reading webcomics and writing. Oh, and eating popcorn. I made that around 12:30.

Well anyway, it's New Year's Eve (it is, isn't it? Weeeeeird) and I ought to go to bed so I can get up so I can stay up later.

Oh! And random news: the orthodontist says I get my dang braces off in February. FINALLY.

I go back to school on the fifth. so I have six days left. I guess I'll start studying for those two finals I have left on the second.

It's cold, all the snow is gone and the world outside is dark and dreary. Ah well. That's why i spend my time downstairs in the basement, where there's plenty of light and color.

I oughta clean my room sometime.

Walla Walla Washington and Kalamazoo! </singing>

Yes, so a better day today. Woke up, opened presents, had breakfast, spent about two and a half hours de-icing the driveway (with a fifteen-minute break for unsticking Dad's car from a snowbank, with the help of my sister, mother, and my neighbor's sons and grandsons), and then the rest of the time I've been here. About two hours.

So what did I get? For one thing, my dad managed to somehow get a hold on a used laptop from my school. How do I know this? Same model, it's got a green sticker on it (means it came from the Humanities B laptop trolley), the battery's shot and I recognize the pattern of scratches on the top. I have called him Greyling, but I don't know how long that will last. I haven't tried him out yet, because Dad's still reconfiguring him, but he has WIFI!! WHEE!!

I also got insanely soft slippers, a dream journal and a stuffed sheep from one of my mom's friends who volunteers at church like Mom and I do (she's the one who lent me Cat Deck the Halls, which I was reading earlier, and told me about the author). I got a crystal star necklace from my aunt and uncle. My stocking had chocolate, an orange, an ornament and two wind-up toys (). Mom got me a gift certificate for a salon down the street and some very lovely sweaters, Dad gave me Greyling (who may end up being called Brett in the end... Brett wants a laptop named after him), and Lan got me a Coldplay album (Viva la Vida).

Hee.

But really, the best Christmas present we got was a bunch of guys putting their shoulders to the back of Dad's car, for no other reason than that we had a problem and we were their dad/grandad's neighbors.

Oh, and my sister refuses to accept my apology for inflicting Twilight upon her--she wants to read it just so she can make fun of it more easily... and it was on sale...

Oh and the plan for next year is a round-robin art/story trade, whichever is easier/more fun for the participant.

I'm in a musical!!

After many years of trying and failing, I finally got into my school's annual musical. This year it's Aida, the Elton John rock musical. I'm in the chorus for "Dance of the Robe" and "The Gods Love Nubia".

To really understand how awesome this is for me, you have to understand: not only do I have SERIOUS inferiority issues coupled with a love of singing and acting, but I also am naturally klutzy and unsuited for dancing unless I have a long time to learn.

My inferiority complex tells me that everyone else is better than me. When under pressure, I never see that the other people are making mistakes too, and all my mistakes are blown way out of proportion in my mind.

My love of singing and acting is usually shown through my participation in the school choir and when I read aloud. I like doing different voices.

I have three right feet.
Well, i survived. But that's not the point of this journal.

Thursday, my mom discovered that there was a kitten living under our porch. We have a cement porch, but generations of chipmunks and ants have been digging under it, and there's probably a sizable hole under it. The kitten is living in that hole.

Yesterday she started feeding him--he's only about four or five months old, and TINY. I saw him last night, and then when he looked up and saw Charlie (a rather imposing figure, at five years old) staring at him, the kitten freaked out and squeezed into a hole about a handspan wide between two paving stones edging the porch.

This morning the cat came out again in daylight while I was near the window. It's an itty-bitty gray floofball. I immediately dubbed the cat "Tiny Cat" or "Tiny" for short. My dad has said many times that we would have no more cats (we HAVE three), but Mom told me in private that she'd already picked out a name for Tiny if Tiny is a boy. "Francis" for Francis of Assisi, the patron of animals. Given the pattern of our cats' names (Charlie, Linus and Lucy), I suggested "Schroeder" if Tiny's a boy and "Peppermint Patti" (Pepper for short) if Tiny's a girl.

We set up a box with a blanket in it on the porch, since the weather is getting nasty (snow and sleet, driving wind, lovely stuff) and we hope the kitten will use it. Next time I can get within view of Tiny with a camera, I'll take a picture.

All right, all together now...

"Awwwwwww!"

Get your minds out of the gutter!) and because my computer is connected to almost every other computer in the house, my regular computer is now disconnected from the network. Huzzah that I have THREE PAPERS AND SEVERAL OTHER COMPUTER-RELATED ASSIGNMENTS DUE THIS WEEK!!

I guess I can write the papers on here, save them as .rtfs, and print them off at school.

Oh, by the way, if you like humor (fantasy OR sci-fi) I totally recommend Robert Asprin. The Myth series is fantasy and has lots and lots of puns (you can't miss them, the word Myth is in every title somewhere), the Phule series is more situational humor (though still with the punny titles; just look for Phule), and then Dragons Wild is the start of a new series that's mostly situational humor. what I mean by situational humor is pretty well described by one of my favorite sections of Dragons Wild:

"Tell me, Griffen," he said, "what do you know about dragons?"

The youth blinked in surprise at the sudden change of subject.

"Um... I don't know," he said finally. Mythical beast... big lizards that fly and breathe fire. Why do you ask?"

Malcolm smiled at him.

"Wrong on every count... except one," he said, ignoring Griffen's question. "Not surprising, really."

"Okay." Griffen shrugged. "We'll leave it that they're mythical beasts. What does that have to do with anything?"

Malcolm pursed his lips as if to whistle, then exhaled a small jet of flame to light his cigar. Griffen's eyes widened even more as his mind whirled.

"That wasn't the point you were right on," he said.

See? There's no outright joke... it's just funny because of the situation... a college kid who is certain that dragons don't exist, just got told by his uncle, a rich businessman, that not only DO they exist, he IS one.

so yeah.

Several months ago I put in an application to my favorite restaurant to work as a 'hostess', taking calls, cashiering, etc. Yesterday I went there for dinner, and noticed they still had the help-wanted sign up, so I asked the manager if he would like me to put in another application. The manager asked me if I'd gotten a call back from them. I said no. He seemed rather surprised and said that they hadn't he would talk to the head manager, the one who does the hiring. All right then.

Today he calls me and says that the head manager said that if I could come in TOMORROW for an interview during my lunch hour, I was hired. Like that. I'm totally serious.

Now I just need a ride from school to the restaurant...

EDIT:

Here's the deal... it's 16 hours a week: four days in a row, four hours a day. This means i won't have as much time on here (much less time for homework) as I'd hoped. I hope to keep doing NaNo, but my Monday through Thursday is going to be tight-packed.

For 8.50 an hour though...

Those of you in the ranks of the employed... advice?

Not like I could have helped it. But yeah. Going now.

Enjoying the Elemental Masters series by Mercedes Lackey. It's really developed since I read The Fire Rose my freshman year. Sometime around then. And brushing up on my Discworld. Looking for more for my bookshelves--I've got The Color of Magic, The Light Fantastic, Wyrd Sisters, Jingo, Monstrous Regiment, Feet of Clay... yeah that's it. I've read Night Watch, Mort, Sourcery, Equal Rites and the three Tiffany Aching books too. <3 Pratchett. Good Omens was my first, and (don't kill me, Allie) I like Neil Gaiman but it's Terry Pratchett who really appeals to me. I prefer humor, parody and satire fantasy to dark fantasy most days.

Going to sleep for real now.

EDIT: Still home. Less tired, will write. Got an idea for NaNo now. Must hold on to it without writing anything for it, damisai. I don't know how Tally does it, comes up with Buckley's Chance months in advance, draws PICTURES and does INTERVIEWS but keeps herself from writing *whimper*

I'm almost an adult. HIDE ME!!

I just registered to vote today. On that note, some things I think about voting.

Politics suck. They've sucked since the Gilded Age, when Grover Cleveland was lampooned over an unconfirmed allegation of siring a child out of wedlock. They weren't much better before, but that's when things really got bad. As far as I'm concerned, this country would be loads better if politicians kept their promises or quit makin' them, if they admitted that personal attacks really don't have much of a point and quit making those too... *sigh*

As it is, though, politics suck. That, however, is no excuse not to vote. Your vote may not seem to make a difference, but it does. Think about it. If you vote, you're making your preference known. You know you have preferences. You may not prefer one party specifically over another, but on at least one issue, you believe one thing or another. However, if you don't vote, the people who are supposed to be speaking for you have no idea what it is you want. Therefore, you're extremely likely to be stuck with what you DON'T want.

So what would you rather? A fifty-fifty chance of getting what you want out of your city, your county, your state and your country? Or would you rather play Russian roulette with your government's policies?

Vote, dammit.

</rant>

ANYway... writing when I can. thanks to those who responded to the previous journal.

HUGS FOR ALL!

...how much the loss of a single finger screws everything up.

Maybe I should explain before people start freaking out...

Saturday was rock awesome (yes that seems to be my new favorite phrase). The marching band swept our class for the competition, and was one-third of a point from winning Grand Champion. So Saturday was cool.

Sunday... eh... late night, got up early, forgot to wear long pants so I couldn't be a eucharistic minister when they needed me, lots of homework. Sunday night, I was shifting my weight in my office chair, and the left armrest broke off completely. It's in my garbage can now. That's how completely it broke off. Problem was, there's a metal pole that's structurally significant next to where my left armrest usually is. So when my armrest broke, my left pinkie was jammed between the pole and the armrest. Now that was Ow enough.

(no break by the way, just a jam and a helluva huge bruise.) I'm right handed, mostly. (that is, most of my fine motor stuff is right-handed.) Buy I do a lot of picking-up of stuff with my left hand. but the inside of my pinkie is one huge bruise, so i can't grip right. so everything takes longer and i keep getting flashes of Ow every time i try to use the left-hand shift key normally.

so the inside of my left pinkie is purple. heehee pinkie is purple... nevermind. this is just randomness, sorry, it's just been bugging me all day how much harder doing stuff is with the loss of, of all fingers, the pinkie of my off hand.

Feeling better so thank you, all.

Okay. For one of my college applications the prompt asked for a piece of art that influenced me and why. Specifically, "Describe a character in fiction, a historical figure, or a creative work (as in art, music, science, etc.) that has had an influence on you, and explain that influence."

So I wrote about my all-time favorite webcomic, 1/0. 1/0 (read as "one over zero") concluded four years before I found it--it's only a thousand strips long, with only a dozen characters total... thirteen if you count the Running Gag. But it is the most complex and rich comic I have ever, ever read, with the best ending in the business, so far as I'm concerned. Go read it at this [link] .

Do it. You won't regret it. So I did what any good nerdgeekette would do.

I dressed up as a ninja.

In other news, I'm just this side of sick (tiny fever, exhausted, nausea from post-nasal drip), I had two tests today, some important school materials got lost in the mail, and I have to get better by Friday for the homecoming game.

Oh, and my dad got a new motor scooter so he was fiddling with it all day. It's red and it has a pillion seat so if I wanted to ride with him i might be able to if it doesn't go over weight capacity.

I have pictures. I shall put them up at some point. Hopefully this weekend.

Okay, i had a long conversation with some of my characters during gym (we were walking around a track, what else could I have done?) and we worked out an agreement. This is how it goes, in part:

1) Finish typing up what I have of a story that used to be called Firechild and now needs a new title.

2) Denise and Danrys want some work done on Mirror Mirror, and a rewrite.

3) Miri wants more work on a subplot I just began, as well as elements from various RPs I've done with her drawn into the story itself. Backstory elements, the like.

4) Ekai wants more work on the Equals script, no matter what, come hell or high water. He's threatened to invite the rest of the main characters into my head to nag me if I don't.

5) Casey had some good ideas to continue the chapter I'm on, as well as commenting that she and I wear our purses everywhere, so I'll either have to invent a reason why she's not wearing it when she leaves or add it into the story. She also wants me to work on the Avaduri, Tul-Hamiken and Cylanese languages.

6) Brett wants me to work more on Shadowmind.

7) And then Lena popped in to remind me about Platinummyr's song, and convinced Brett to wait.

Therefore, the order of work is Alyx/Merc/WTN, Mirror Mirror, Outcast, Equals script, Paladin, Wanderer's Lament song, and then Shadowmind. Various RPs will be scattered within.

Yes, I do have coherent conversations with my characters. I'm on cordial terms with most of them, and I'm friendly with Casey, Miri and Ekai. I firmly believe that if you just take the time to talk, you don't have to force your characters to do anything. Also, characters work better if they get to make their own input.
