I'm currently sitting in Hanoi Airport, waiting the ridiculously long wait for a flight to Bangkok. I got up at 5:30am this morning to get a taxi with Kat and Sophie (who I've been traveling with for quite some time now) to the Airport. Their flight left at 9:15. It's 11am now, and my flight leaves at 20:55 tonight. Why on earth did I get the taxi this early. It was only $10 but still... I'm sitting in a cafe and I think they're wondering when I'm going to leave.

Anyway, I've been through Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam, and it's been the greatest time of my life. I was pretty unlucky on August 1st when I had my camera stolen in Cambodia on the way to Siem Reap. It was horrible to think that for the rest of my trip I'd be cameraless, but it's inspired me to get going again in Australia so much more than I originally planned. I've written down thousands of ideas, all of which I will most certainly follow through with. The loss of my camera has meant I've had time to think about what I should do as a replacement. At first, I thought I'd settle for a 400D, or a 450D. Then I thought I'd buy another 40D or 50D (small upgrade) but now I have realised that I've got so much left throughout my travels, all of which are photography related. I'm already planning a trip through Europe to meet up with some of the people I've been traveling with (like Sophie and Kat who both live in france for half the year) So now I am settled on getting a Canon 5D or the 5D mark II. The reason being is that I feel that I have earned it. Not by losing my camera, but I said I was going to do this trip, and I wouldn't have thought that in a million years I'd be posting a journal entry from Vietnam. Its very surreal. So the first port of call is to get myself a job with regular income in Australia. It means I can get my parents to lend me some of the cash and I can therefore pay them back over a period of time. I've been in close contact with a great firm in Sydney that do brilliant camera, lens and light rentals for next to nothing and I'm certainly going to take them up on that.

I've visited many amazing places and met many amazing people over the last 2 months. I've also spent way too much money and it's a little worrying sometimes but I figure that's something not to worry about, or issues with money get so much worse.

I feel very at home being on the road so much. It certainly sucks carrying around a big bag with a big camera bag and all the equipment that goes with it, but that's a small price to pay for feeling content with yourself. If I could give any advice to anyone wanting to travel, I say go for it. Don't hesitate, don't worry, don't even think about it. Flying is relatively cheap, you can definitely do it on a budget. It's the greatest thing I have ever done, and making something happen has never been my strong point. For once in my life I have finally said I'd do something, and I've followed it through. Traveling is the greatest thing I have EVER done... Hands down. I could rant on and on about the people I've met, the people I've photographed, and the things i've done and the places i've been, but that'd bore the crap out of you all. Sometimes talking about it so much just doesn't do it justice. you gotta pack up and go while you have the chance.

I've got loads of edits to do, and my mac needs calibrating properly. I can't wait to get everything going properly again in Australia.
So for now, it's goodbye. I'll update y'all whenever I can.

Feel free to contact me if you're going to any of the places I listed. I'd love to answer some questions if you're thinking about going.
peace out.

Do you ever sit up late at night dreaming about the future? Wondering if it's all going to turn out just the way you want it to?

I've sat up in bed until the early hours of the morning since I went into hospital 2 years ago. On May 16th it's my 2 year anniversary since I went into hospital. Effectively this means it's 2 years since I had to make the biggest decision in the world and suddenly grow up. I've sat up every single night dreaming about travelling the world, taking pictures in my stride and just living life to the absolute max.

June 14th I finally make my dreams a reality! Off to travel the world, through 11 countries. Home - Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand again, Kuala Lumpur, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Tahiti, The Cook Islands, L.A, Seattle and back home. 12 months with a backpack as my house, 12 months to home in on my skills as a photographer, 12 months to work on a project I have been thinking about for far too long now.

The photographers that have inspired me to do this are...

Lara Jade - She's my age, she's fantastic and it shows that if you put your mind to it, you can achieve anything. (plus she's good friends with my dear friend Kerry, so I have to throw in a good word for her)

Joey Lawrence - In my eyes, the greatest photographer around at the moment.

Chase Jarvis - Maybe the coolest photographer around at the moment, his photos are inspiring and he shares so much of his knowledge with everyone.

Zack Arias - The one light legend. Also for his knowledge he shares with everyone

David Hobby - What would the world do without Strobist?

Drew Gardner - I bought his DVD the other week and it's and understatement to say that's inspiring, it's absolutely mind blowing.

and finally...

My good friend Simon Lipman. He's given me so many opportunities to work in London and helped me on my way, if anything it's one of the main reasons i've stuck with creating images as a career path.

So here I am, about a month away from my trip. I'll try and keep you all updated, but wish me luck.

Follow me on twitter & blogger.

[link]
[link]

First of all... I love the new D.A Profile page. It looks classy. Secondly it's 2009, and quite possibly the biggest year of my life.

I'm 20 this year. Goodbye teens. I'm finally finishing education forever this year. Thank god for that. And i'm off on an adventure. Finally.

I've been talking about this for far too long. I'm sure most of my friends are sick of it, but I don't care. I just wish they'd come with me. Some of you know I work in a small Bar in my local town till stupid times in the morning. I met a girl there who worked with me called Hannah, and she's out on her adventure right this minute. I wish I went with her, I wish I had the money to go with her... It's pretty daunting to think I'll be doing this on my own, but the motive is there to get so many photos of people I meet on my travels. Obviously I'm going to be partying myself stupid all year, but I'm also doing a massive personal project called "Faces from Around the World". The whole idea is to show people what life is like around the world. I know that nowadays the internet is there and TV is there to show it all to us... but I can't see anything better than going there and seeing it for myself. I want to inspire people to get up and do it for themselves too. It maybe a complete stab in the dark, but why not?

So it really is all systems go from now until June. I have my meetings booked with the travel agencies and I'm booking my tickets very, very soon. I'll be getting a macbook before I go so I can edit and upload on the go and keep everything up to date over the year. I'm excited... I can't wait.

Just a thought... If anyone else is doing the same type of thing as me, i'll be in and around Thailand from the middle of June through to September. If you're out there too, lets meet up! Same applies to Australia and New Zealand.

Got a few people to see before I go too. for sure!
Another year has passed. Personally this year has gone far too quickly for my liking. I've got mixed emotions about 2009. I'm hugely excited about my travel plans, but on the same hand I'm incredibly anxious and scared! It'll be the first time I go abroad on my own, the first time I'll be doing everything by myself. I mean... I fly from Thailand to Sydney, and when I get to Sydney I really have NO idea where I'm going. No meeting up with tour guides, nothing... Cool huh?

Christmas was good fun. Family time is always important at Christmas, but just as important as the good old family banter, I feel that treating yourself is equally as important! I've been spending the day making various prototype light modifiers for my flash, and I've stumbled across some really neat tutorials. David Hobby and Strobist has always been my bible, its like an online photographers dictionary. So I inevitably found some really useful DIY tutorials, I'm off to buy some bits and pieces tomorrow. I've also finally got a vertical grip for my 40D, along with my POCKETWIZARDS!!!!! Hurrah! very pleased. Wireless triggering up to 1600ft. yes please.

I've also got to come to terms with selling some bits and pieces so I can afford my L glass lenses to travel with. I need some advice...

I think i'm 100% settled on getting a 17-40 f4L because it'll be a great all purpose lens to capture everything I need when in Thailand, Oz , NZ etc... (plus I can't afford the 24-70 f2.8L) but I want a nice L glass prime...

85mm
24mm
35mm or any other suggestions? Plus links to cheap places to get them haha.

Anyone else excited for 2009?

So I've finally got into the festive spirit. I've been working hard at the local bar and club to get my savings up again. I started to slack a bit over the last month so I'm back on it.

I had to buy a new car 3 days before christmas. That sucked. Basically my other car was so bad, it was unrepairable and it blew up on me one morning. So bang goes £1600. The lucky thing is, I paid £1000 of that and my parents put the rest towards it for christmas... The idea being that when I go on my travels I sell the car and get my £1000. It certainly won't depreciate more than £600 in 5 months time.

I've got some new gear on the way in the new year too. I've got my grant coming in February which is awesome, so i'm treating myself to a macbook... Not the macbook pro. I've come to realise that the reality is I don't need something that's just a little bit bigger. Surely it'll be sensible to carry a small laptop with me on my travels? I'm also getting the gorgeous 85mm f1.2L lens. I am E X C I T E D!!!! My plan was to travel with my 50mm and a 17-40 f4L but it looks as though I'll have 2 primes and a really nice zoom.

So 2009 is just around the corner. Its the biggest year for me by far. I will spend a whole year away from home. I get back in 2010.... I turn 20 probably in Oz or New Zealand, I'll spend new year in Fiji... Its really crazy to think I'm finally going to do it.

I'll have a website up early next year too and upload to that while I'm away.

Just want to wish you all a fantastic Christmas and happy new year. Thank you for all the lovely comments I've had on some of my recent uploads. Glad you like!

But something did bring a smile to my face as I got my hands on the canon 580 EX II speedlite.

I L O V E this thing, I'm still getting to grips with it, but it leads me to the inexpensive lighting solutions I've been thinking about for so long.

Every aspiring fashion, portrait, editorial etc photographers will know that off camera flash, providing its executed properly gives outstanding results in the final image. So along with my 580 I've finally got my hands (well not quite got my hands) on a set of pocketwizard plus 2 transceivers, along with that my 10.5 foot bowens BW 6610 stand arrived yesterday so i'm getting there...

I've been speaking alot recently to I found this guy on myspace, I remember looking at his photos and thinking "how the fuck does a guy of 17 have a 1Ds and all those lights" getting increasingly envious of this... but over the last few weeks we've sent each other some cool DVD's to help us on the way with lighting our subjects. As you'll see he's already way ahead of me, but I'll catch up some day.

We both checked out this guy called Zack Arias, this guy is insane with his lighting. I got my hands on his DVD "One Light Workshop" I couldn't believe how good it was. Such a cool guy telling everyone how to do things like he does... So i sent it to Marty. Maybe a major mistake on my behalf haha, he's better than me AND gets to shoot hot girls on a daily basis. How I wish I lived in Edinburgh .

Apart from that, I'm religiously going through strobist.com.

Its been a while since I spent a good few hours on DeviantArt recently but I've got back into the swing of things. I've had a really good few weeks just sitting at home learning new things. As some of you know I worked with Simon Lipman again in London for the Easy Jet In Flight magazine, which was amazing.

I also got a copy of Zack Arias' "One Light Workshop" DVD. If you've not heard of Zack Arias and you love compelling portraits, google his name now. He practically lights everything with One Light. Hence the name of his DVD. I've not got a flash as of yet, but I know I'm getting the 580 EX II for my birthday. I'm debating weather to spend the next big amount of money on the pocketwizard plus II transceivers (does anyone know of any cheaper equivalent?)

If anyone else has the DVD please get in touch i'd love to hear what you made of it. It also helped my understand alot about lighting that I'd never quite understood. I'm not expecting to get a flash and instantly transform my photos to being incredible, but i'm pretty sure if i stick with it it'll be worth it.

Also my travel plans are almost finalised. I have a meeting with STA booked very soon, and i'll be booking my flights from january. heres the route...

UK > Thailand > Australia > New Zealand > Fiji > LA > UK

So its BIG! I can't wait. More details on that at a later date got some awesome things to share.

Please if you get the chance add me on facebook too. [link]rofile

F E A T U R E S

Simple & Clean NG CSS: `ClaireJones | Silk Icons: famfamfam

A little too quickly, but, I check out apple.com as fast as my little hands could type.

I see this beautiful new machine, that I just want to kiss (LOL) I had nagged my parents to get me a macbook pro for my birthday and I made sure mum told me she hadn't bought one of the old pros. Anyway, due to the credit crunch and all sorts of housing problems, macbook pro is still out of arms reach at the moment. Instead i'm getting my 580 EX II and a 430 so i can have some lights.

I'm applying for so many grants to get my photography up and running so, there is a chance I will head off to Australia next year with one...

I have the money but I'm buying my Round The World flight in January and I HAVE to go travelling first.

Thialand to Australia, To New Zealand, To Figi to Los Angeles... Not if you live in Australia... but for the UK bound people, prepare to be cold. I went to work today with just a jumper on and my hands almost fell off.

I've got lots of plans for winter. I'm getting organised and I'm saving lots. My macbook pro arrives in November sometime with CS3 and Aperture 2.0 pre-installed, and I'm getting a few bits a pieces for my camera over the next couple of months. I got a tax rebate... paying tax and then getting it back is possibly the greatest thing ever invented. I now have enough money to travel next year. 100% definitely. Happy as pie...

Anyhoo's...Not much to say, its my birthday in just over a month. 19 is a horrible sounding age.

I've finally got together some features for you.

Well we all know that this week on the 17th September Canon announced its new 5D mark II with an impressive 21.1 MP FF sensor and HD video capability and I wont even bother to go into how depressed I shall feel when we see the first photos pop up on DA from people with too much money . I guess on the plus side it means I might be able to go full frame by next year and get a 1D mark II or something. Slightly unrealistic but there's no problem in dreaming right?

Anyway, Thanks to the small select few of you that got back to me with the questions I needed answering. I've decided that since I am going travelling for a solid year there would be no point in getting full studio lights. So...

I'm going to travel with a 580 EX II and a 430 EX with some pocketwizards or whatever remote trigger I can find. I need cheap stands, or I'll just make some and making softboxes really doesn't sound challenging at all. So yeah... I'm pretty pleased because I'll be able to head up to the skate park, take better band promos, and generally it will improve the quality of my photos dramatically.

I'm doing a tonne of photos for the local night club Ruin in the next week as well as a tonne of modelling stuff. I'm also nearly 100% confirmed for a trip to Holland to photograph a band for some magazine. They contacted me about 2 weeks ago and said they'd pay for my ferry or flight providing I can get into a hotel or something. Not 100% sure I will do this yet. I'm going to have to find out if I can rent out some lights and learn how to use them. I do not want to disappoint if I head over there.

So that's my news really. Everything is going well according to plan. If anyone wants photos and you live in the UK hit me up. I have a car and can travel anywhere.

Simple & Clean NG CSS: `ClaireJones | Silk Icons: famfamfam

I've only had a few bands ask me to do shots for them, and only 1 girl has asked for some new modelling shots...

So there I am thinking "what the hell is wrong with my photography" And in all fairness its average. plain, boring, dull, anyone could do it. I've been working very hard staying up till the early hours of the morning (sometimes not going to be until 6 am) reading through tonnes of tutorials and videos I've found on the internet. Google is a fantastic tool and I owe everything to it.

So its time for a change... I'm going to be buying some lights. I need a kit with at least 2 lights, 2 stands and 2 softboxes. Portable power is pretty important too but generators cost near to nothing to rent out for the day.

Anyway first thing i need an answer to...

"IS THERE ANYWHERE IN THE UK THAT SELL ALIEN BEES LIGHTS?"

I've looked F***ing everywhere and I am sad to say I think they are US based and if I really wanted them I'd have to ship them in

Secondly...

"DOES UPGRADING TO A FULL-FRAME FORMAT CAMERA IMPROVE THE IMAGE QUALITY OF YOUR PICTURES"

I swear all fashion & portrait photographers have full frame cameras

And Lastly

"DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT THE NEW CANON CAMERA IS YET I AM SO EXCITED!!"

Thanks to Hougaard, I found his post about a new canon camera. I wanna know NOW!

Please help me guys, Is there any cheap lighting kits in the UK that will suit me well? My images really have to stand out. Which means we get our lovely winter skies back at 5 in the afternoon! It means I can go out before work and get some nice landscape shots!

Anyway, appart from that I've been busy working at Ruin (a local bar and nightclub) to build up my money. As i've been saying since I pretty much joined Deviantart... I AM going to Australia FINALLY! Next year between june 12th and june 20th (hopefully) I am buying my ticket in january during the sales which is SWEET.

my plans are to fly into Sydney and check into a hostel so I can meet some people doing the same kinda thing as me. I'm going to do all the major things like Dive the great barrier reef, see Ayers rock and stuff. I will also be heading out to New Zealand and the south pacific. Probably the Cook Islands or Fiji and Tahiti. I am really excited because I've managed to save up quite a bit of money now for it which means I can buy some extra camera equipment before I go.

I'm getting my macbook pro around December time. Practically ever family member said they'd chip in so I can get it, but i'm also going to get a Canon 10-22mm for the landscape shots and a 24-70 f2.8L. I'll pack those with my 40D and my 50mm f1.4 and a 2 strobes and i'll be away!

I am hoping I stick to my plans! I certainly will in terms of going to Australia... I just know i'll wander off somewhere and want more photo stuff.

But for the meantime, I've gotta wait 8 months till I can buy any nice new clothes, spend money on nights out, or days out... I am seriously keeping the pennies aside for equipment and travel. I'm even cutting my own hair!

I'll upload some new pics in a few days!

Simple & Clean NG CSS: `ClaireJones | Silk Icons: famfamfam

I've done not alot really. I've not really submitted as much as i would have liked. And i've certainly not saved enough money...

but even so i'm concentrating hard. All my EMA payments over the next term time will be put towards a trip to Australia for a year. I'm going to make sure i go out there with my macbook pro so i can stay in contact with people and edit and upload safely over the year...

I'll be traveling with my 40D. I'd love to upgrade to a 5D but there's no point yet. I'll pack lens wise my 50mm f1.4, a 17-40f 4L and a 24-105 f4L (or the 24-70 f2.8L) not sure yet. I've got my 580 EX II and a 430 EX on their way with pocketwizards so that'll be fine and all i need is a tripod now.
Manfrotto... anyone got any suggestions?

I'll upload a better journal sometime soon

Simple & Clean NG CSS: `ClaireJones | Silk Icons: famfamfam

Simon is a top fashion photographer ([link])

my cousin Katie is a fashion stylist and writer as I mentioned in my last journal and it was today that I managed to get down to the studio.

We were working in a studio called Home Studios. [link] this place was awesome. I get there to find Katie and Jack (the two stylists) frantically looking through endless amounts of the latest clothes and fashion wear, Simon pointing his camera at the gorgeous Pelina and two other people sitting back and watching and occasionally dancing to the music playing from the ipod.

Anyway, I introduce myself to everyone and I'm immediately working. Simon has me moving lights and holding reflectors. I'm looking around and he's holding a canon 5D with a 50mm f1.4 lens. something I can relate to at last!!!! Next to him is his bag of goodies, he has a 24-70 f2.8L and a 70-200 f2.8L lens. (he talks me through them and stuff which was ace. I actually got hands on with some of the equipment I've been gawping at for ages.) he's uploading all his images to a macbook pro straight to capture one pro and the outcome is AMAZING.

I've had an amazing day, and my name will be in the magazine when it is officially out. I'll have the tearsheets from it in a few weeks...

Enjoy everyone! I'll upload a photo asap!

Simple & Clean NG CSS: `ClaireJones | Silk Icons: famfamfam

However, I have actually been real busy lately.

First of all my shoots and design work is getting a little more business, so on that front it's meant more money my way. I've got 3 shoots to do this week for local bands which means an extra bit of money here and there...

I've also been uploading religiously to shutterstock and that's increased my paypal balance by quite a substantial amount. This means I'll be able to afford my new lens (lenses) soon.

Also... Yes there is more... I've been offered that work experience I was on about in my last journal with fashion photographer Simon Lipman. I'll be going down to London in the next few weeks to help out on set, moving lights and stuff and just going down to work in the environment y'know? I managed to get it thanks to my cousin Katie Greengrass who is a fashion stylist and writer. Hopefully for me, if Simon seems happy with me I'll be travelling a little bit with them too.

AND FINALLY...

I have just finished recording with my band at CDS studios. We recorded 2 tracks to finish off our E.P and they'll be up soon. When they are PLEASE GO CHECK THEM OUT.

I'll add features later guys. there's a lot of them and I'm tired.

and THANKS FOR 6000 PAGEVIEWS
HURRAH!!!!!

xxxx

Simple & Clean NG CSS: `ClaireJones | Silk Icons: famfamfam

The work has paid off and I'm working at a new bar called Ruin. So... If things go to plan I'll work all through summer, save up hopefully over £1000 ish and buy my new lens. 24-70 f2.8L i'm 100% settled on. Seeing as I will have some money left over (I can get it for just over £600) I might invest in a sigma 10-20mm or something pretty wide so I can travel to the Lake District. Its either that or some lights or a manfrotto tripod. I found my tripod in a skip so its not exactly the most reliable thing in the world.

I'm also off to the photography studio FINALLY. I'm sure it'll pick up. I've got a project i'm starting very soon. its a series of black and white portraits. i got the idea after i did a load of self portraiture. So you'll be seeing loads of work over the summer from me.

-----------------------------------------

Tonights The Last Chance
To Show Some Pride
Before Your
Pride Dies...

[link]
[link]

Theres my mates band we're on tour with
and my band
Check us out

Simple & Clean NG CSS: `ClaireJones | Silk Icons: famfamfam

Get some lush shots out in the city.

I'm getting a batter grip too very soon, And i'm debating weather it'd be worth getting a 135mm f2.0L lens. They're like under £500 and real nice quality. Anyone wanna give any tips?

Heres a list of things I want to get in the next few years.

14mm f2.8L (fisheye)
35mm f1.4L
50mm f1.2L
85mm f1.2L
135mm f2.0L
24-70 f2.8L
70-200 f2.8L
580 EX II Flash
Alien Bee's lighting

haha
So...

About £10000 of stuff then? Is it worth paying mass amounts of extra money for the canon version, the Canon 24-70 f2.8L or sticking with a Sigma 24-70.

The canon looks way nicer haha but seriously... is the difference in image quality really that noticeable. If i were to get the Sigma 24-70 then i could buy ANOTHER sigma lens for the same price as the canon...OR... Is the canon really worth that investment.

My brother has the Canon version and he swears by it. I'm just trying to see all the options really. I have access to a studio environment in haverhill and i could get some fantastic results with a new lens.

Please please help me here

F E A T U R E D A R T I S T S

I stumbled across this page a few days ago while seraching for pictures taken with a 24-70mm lens.
I'll read more maps than books. traveling is my passion.

Hey guys, i'm sorry i've gone off on a right journal spree lately and you're probably all sick of me going "help me out with this" and "what the fuck should i do here"

I'm pretty much sorted i'm getting my new lens for summer. The Canon 24-70 f2.8L. Its the picture below for the retards...

Click the picture for an exciting link

Yumm Yumm.

This is going to be such an investment. it'll be great in low light situations (e.g gigs etc) and it'll be great in the studio environment. I'm pretty sure it'll take some great landscapes. I'll get an adapter ring for my ND grads and polarizers.

I'm also investing in a decent flashlite. The Canon 580 EX II. As alot of you have said it'll be best to get this as the master flash, and if i need any slave units for other lighting then so be it, they're cheap and easy to get. So these two things will be tripping with me to America when i'm on tour with my sisters band SCHOOLYARD HEROES. They're on tour with Scary Kids Scaring Kids and From First To Last at the moment.

I've also been invited to the studio where a local professional David Doughtly [link] works. I'm really excited about going to work with him because it'll get me into the studio environment.

So thats all the good news i have really. I found an old tripod too so i'm out getting some really cool long exposure shots.

F E A T U R E S
I love fashion and people photography. I'm still in love with Landscape work because it keeps me wanting to travel, but enjoy They all deserve a good look at

<img src="http://tn1-2.pv.deviantart.com/fs25/150/f/2008/102/c/c/roo...

I've spent a number of weeks really thinking seriously about trying to do something with my photography, and I've messaged people from myspace, e-mailed people in America, Australia, Spain, Italy, New Zealand etc etc, and I've got in touch with people here on D.A.

I want to really start doing some portraiture work and live music photography when i get my new lens. I'm stuck between saving for the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM or the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM. Their both pretty beasty lenses so i need some advice here...

Lighting is super important too and I'm doing as much learning as i can about lighting. I'm all self taught so bare with me .

Anyway, I've also wanted to thank a few people for helping me out on here.

<-- Fantastic photos on here, and i urge you all if you're reading to go and check this out.
<-- This man is insane, and has helped me with my landscape work.

And also a few other people who arn't on DA (or i haven't found them yet)

Joey Lawrence, for being so inspiring. His work is amazing, just like Lara, he's under 20 years old and already pro and working with bands such as Panic At The Disco and Disturbed.

So basically the whole getting it sorted part is letting you know that i'm working my arse off. I've not going out as much to save up for new equipment. I'm working more shifts at work to get more money. I'm setting up a myspace account so people can contact me (for photography and design) through there instead of D.A or E-mail, and yeah... I'm dead serious about it.

Lastly, my final MRI scan for a whole year will be in April, so that'll tell you all if my spine is fixed. I'm positive it will be, but theres always a little bit of me worrying away... Obviously.

Please check out the photographers listed above, and check out my features too. They all deserve a look at

Phil

F E A T U R E S

     <img src="http://tn1-1.pv.deviantart.com/fs28/150/f/...

If anyone knows anyone selling any, let me know. :iconMTBjames: said he'd be willing to give me one of his old heads which is great!!! Thanks there to james. I'll have to owe him a subscription when his runs out.

I'm also looking for a new lens. Now... I've been thinking so much about it. I want the Sigma 10-20mm... Its such a universal lens that nearly everyone has, and I'm big into landscape photography. However i have found myself wanting to do loads more portraiture stuff with interesting lighting. a bit like When i had a complete jaw dropping amazed fest at Joey Lawrence.

So i might go for a real big save most of this year...
Either
The Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM
Or the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM

Both pro glass lenses, but i'm well up for a big save. This wont be until maybe Christmas time, but i know it'll be worth the wait and save.

I need to look into getting a flash too... I go to tonnes of gigs and i want to be able to get in with my camera and get some good pictures, with great lighting and atmosphere...

If anyone has the time to search TOM BARNES in google, go do it. He's one photographer i'd aspire to be like... So please give me your feedback.. WHAT SHOULD I DO

How can i improve my understanding of what to do etc etc

Phil

I've been getting pretty disheartened with what I've been doing, I'm not happy with my work and I'm desperate to visit somewhere so incredibly beautiful so i can be inspired for once.

Thanks to the following...

*Hougaard
*AndyMumford
=Sun-Seeker
and
*MarcAdamus

Please check them all out. They're fantastic.

These fellow deviants have commented critically on my work, and helped me realize that it does take time and patience to get things right. Hougaard Mentioned Marc Adamus in his journal once, and i checked out some of his work... I was totally inspired.
I decided later that day to send a lengthy e-mail to Marc for some wise advise. And luckily enough, Marc had some time in the morning that day, and got back to be me with some amazing advice. It's really helped.

So basically i decided to buy a cheap tripod off ebay for about £30 to help me on my way with some better quality images. I've done so much reading of tutorials its untrue, and i'm saving up for the Sigma 10-20mm lens. everywhere i look people have this lens and for landscape photography, i think it will be a wise investment. I can't afford Pro Glass lenses yet .

So i am hoping to go out in all my free days getting some new pictures for you all. please comment critically on my work. It wont offend me if you say exactly what you think. its what i need.

Cheers everyone once again.
Phil x

Hope you like it. Its currently February, and I'm in half term week. No college for 3 days, and its been sunny as pie outside. I've been to Wells-Next-The-Sea and taken a few shots (a few are in my gallery) I'm pretty proud of, and a number of other photos around Bury St Edmunds. I'm not overly happy with a lot of the outcomes lately though. Reason being is that, my photos to me, don't stand out. Theres no amazing colour in them. Theres no sharpness and detail within the photo. Maybe I'm taking too much inspiration from people that have been doing this for years, whereas I've had my camera all of 4 months.

A few questions bugging me are as follows. Is it my lens thats causing me to have crappy photos? (No!) Is it because i haven't got a really super expensive lens? (No!) I just can't help but think... "well its my equipment?" I still have a lot of learning to do. I shoot constantly in RAW and Manual mode to make the most out of my active learning.

I think its just an annoying stage I'm at. I've ALWAYS been impatient. I want to be good, and want to be good NOW! I want to learn how to do RAW conversions properly too. So if anyone can help me, drop me a note.

AND QUIT GIVING ME SINGLE WORD "FEEDBACK" Its annoying.

If anyone could help me to shoot better photos, sharper photos, just more interesting photos, Please just talk to me. I'm on here every night at least, and I'd love some help to improve.

Cheers

Favouites.
Here are some of my favourite photos over the last few weeks.

Check out all my 's if you get a chance.
Thank you!!!

new Journal CSS going up soon, I need something a little more eye catching. Plus it gives me something to do.

I've ordered my 50mm f1.8 Prime (fixed Focal Length) lens, and i intend to have maybe a EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM lens by the end of the year. That or a 24-70mm. Either way i will aim to save to have a Canon L series lens by the end of 2008.

My plans regarding traveling have made a drastic change. I am no longer going to Australia this year. So me it is simply unrealistic and i wont have enough money to spend a good month out there. besides... I want to be out there, in Figi, Australia and New Zealand for half a year, maybe a year to really get the best of it. So my plans are to go on holiday with my friends, and stay in america for 3 - 4 weeks on tour with my sisters Band.

[link]

So yeah, I'm looking forward to it.
New journal up later i recon.
Ideas and Plans for summer 2008.

I've been real busy lately, so first of all I'd like to apologise for the lack of submissions. Someone buy me CS3 Already , I've got no copy of photoshop.

I've been thinking seriously about summer this year, and obviously i am still full steam ahead for Australia. I really can't wait much longer. I'm also traveling to the lake district or peak district with and a few other mates to snap up the mountains. I'm looking forward to it.

However, I am also worried about certain things. It annoys me that everything revolves round money. I mean, it really does. I have a job so I'm not a lazy sod that just says "i wish i had money"... But, its just not good enough. I want a new lens for Australia, or a tripod, but that all costs. Petrol to get to and from work and to and from college each week is just a bastard. Then as soon as i get close to saving up for something I've been wanting, i have MOT or Insurance to pay off...

What I'm saying is... I'M 18, HOW ON EARTH AM I GOING TO COPE IN LIKE... 3 YEARS TIME. Haha, Its awful i know. But this is why I'm so motivated to make decent money in my life and make a living out of something i truly love.

So... I'll have some nice stuff up soon i promise. And... Had suggested to get a 50mm f1.8 Prime lens. Obviously theres me saying "but i have no money"... They're like £50... Ebay solves all. So some new things will be on their way by feb i promise.

Oh and remember, please do check out my band. Theres a link to our myspace at the top of my page.

F E A T U R E S
Here are some of my favourites this month.
Basically, I've been doing shit all at the moment and its not on. I've been reading loads and thinking of alot of things.

Its time to make a change, and stop taking conventional photo's and stretch my boundaries to their limit.

I want to start getting photos of people, and just give myself a chance to try something new without thinking "i can't do it"

There was an article on Joey Lawrence's photography page. [link] and it read

"My New Years Resolution? I always thought it was stupid to have a New Years Resolution because every day is exactly a year away from that day the year before, so really, it's almost like an excuse to reinvent yourself. HOWEVER, I'll give in and have a resolution just this one time. I want to make 2008 even busier than 2007 was and travel to more places.

I was still in highschool for most of 2007, which I dreaded but finished to be a responsible citizen. If some kind of magical force showed me all the amazing people I would meet and the things I would see last year I would not have believed it, and I still don't really believe it after seeing it with my own eyes. Something has come over me that has pushed me to see the places I want to see, and do the things I want to do.

I'm not talking about putting a career at risk, or making a revolt against living a normal calm life... But to all those who ask me how I travel so much and tell me they wish they could too - The world is open to you. In our modern world you can hop on a plane and be almost anywhere in the world in less than a day. Take some time for yourself and stop wishing. If you don't have money, stay in $3 places and embrace the spiders and lizards with great happiness- you're doing what you want to do! Bring your camera and bring back some stories to tell your grandkids when you're old. I can't think of anything better to spend my time doing."

Theres one thing i will do... and that is travel. I don't have very much money at the moment, but i'll get myself a new lens and an external flash soon. Thats quite a fair bit of money but y'know its all worth it. I'm looking at Canon L series lenses, just because i tried my brothers and i didn't want to go back to my 17-85mm haha. I might even sell that lens and see if i can put that money towards a lens.

I actually can't wait for the new year. I'm off to Australia with my two best friends to see another best friend. Fellow deviant Josh will be coming too so we'll have tonnes of pictures when we come back (providing I can take a massive hard drive with me)

I am however having some problems with my full view. They're all pretty small and I don't know what i'm doing wrong. Could anyone tell me if I need to save the image in another way or something, because you're just not getting the most out of my images. HELP ME!!!

Christmas was good fun. We had some fun times with my family and I've got a few filters I can play around with. I may treat myself to a manfrotto tripod because panoramas are just so fun to do. The end result is wonderful.

Anyway I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and have a very happy new year.

Right. First of all, I'd just like to make a shout out to one of my friends on DeviantArt who's currently in South Africa, and has access to some incredible equipment and is in the most perfect place for photography.

[link] <---- Please check some of his photos out and add him to your watch list. He'll be the person I take most of my photos with when he gets back home.

So on a lighter note, Australia in 2008 looks incredibly promising, as we will sort out the dates when we're all together in early January, and we have to work out how much money we need. Which is incredibly annoying when I want a nice new Manfrotto tripod and a wide angle lens (i mean, I'm not just going to Australia with one lens and my camera haha)

Anyway, things really are looking up. I've got some plans to visit the Lake District again next year, and hopefully Scotland. But it all depends on the money of course. WHY CAN'T I STEAL?!?!

Lastly, thank you for all the positive feedback I've had since I've had my camera. nearly at 3000 page views which is just fantastic, so if i can get to 5000 by the end of Jan, I'll love you forever haha.

Speak soon people

Well what a year this has been for me. If one word could describe how this year has been... It would be "shit". As some of you may know, this year i was diagnosed with a rare spinal disease called Syringomyelia. I went into hospital at the start of May for brain surgery and went through the worst month of my life.

As if that wasn't enough, I had to endure seeing my friends loose some people very close to their hearts, and watch them feel at their worst too. There was nothing i could say, i didn't know what to say, they just knew i was there for them.

Today I came home and found that Dad may have Cancer. My mum was diagnosed 8 years ago now, and has been fine ever since *touches wood* I always stay positive, and thats all I'm doing with Dad, and making sure he stays positive too.

However, I'm making it my mission that 2008 will be a year to remember. A year of traveling and happiness. 2007 for me, was certainly a year to forget. bring on 2008.

F E A T U R E S
Gilad is an Israeli photographer who simply is, for me, truly inspiring. I've added many of his photos to my favorites since i joined DA. Anyway I found an interview he had done on some website i found using the almighty Google and it was just ace to read about him in more detail.

"In most types of art you are making things up. You use your imagination to allow a viewer into your world.
Photography is about using the world around you to share your perspective. You can be standing in the street and simply looking differently at something, like no one around you – That’s my satisfaction as a photographer. Photography allows me to make people enter into my world; a world that is actually the same world they have around them. Nothing is made up."

([link]) Thats the link to the article.

For anyone that wants to check him out and hasn't heard who he is... Then do so here ([link]) Because he regularly submits "how to" articles and certain things like that, that may in fact answer alot of your questions you've been wondering about.

He also does his "weekly spotlight" and it just shows some of his favorites over the past week submitted by lesser known users. So yeah... bit of an odd Journal this week...

Like i said I'm both uninspired and inspired. maybe its because England is such a Joke of a country to live in.

I think many people will agree with me on that one... Seeing as 24 million peoples ID details were apparently "lost" in the post on 2 CD's. Which Leads me to think... Surely something of that importance doesn't just get burned to CD and sent off IN THE POST. They certainly have back up discs. England annoys me.
End of.

hope you enjoyed my weekly rant.

I'm back from a weekend away in Paris, and what a weekend it was. The weather was perfect. Cold sunny days which meant i could wrap up warm and walk around the city with my camera in hand, grab the metro and buses to the main attractions, and wander off on my own down streets and alleys just to see what was there.

We arrived shortly after 1pm on the Friday. After checking in at the hotel we were staying at quickly we rushed out for a browse. We were in a hotel just 2 minutes off the Notre Dame island. A perfect location really. I took a number of shots of Notre Dame before going in. We walk through these HUGE doors and i stood awe-struck at this amazing place. Although I am not religious, the place had a feeling to it that was just incredible. After that i rushed into the que to climb to the top. French people love their stairs don't they.

So anyway, next day got tonnes of pictures of the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre and Sacre Coeur, so pictures will be uploaded soon as i've had a play around with them. They may not be brilliant but it doesn't matter. I'm still learning .

I did also went into the Pompidou center, which had lots of Picasso work and a photography exhibition. I got lots of inspiration there

Anyway. My aim is to work as hard as possible and travel loads to get shots like Toope

Got a class gallery there and yeah... thats about it. I've rambled quite enough and i've gotten bored haha. Anyway new pictures coming soon. Promise.

Hey everyone

I'm making a speedy recovery from hospital after my brain opperation. My walking is still very uneasy and my eyesight is still a bit on the mend, but i'm doing very well considering i had my opp on wednesday the 16th of may. The doctor completed my opp in just under 4 hours!!! it was due to take up to 7 so he was "on fire" as they said at the ward. The nurses were incredible, i really couldn't have asked for better service and commitment to what they have done.

I had some good new even despite being completely off my face on morphene and kodene that my blood/sugar levels were perfect almost 24/7, and that was still the same when i hadn't eaten for 5 days. My oxygen intake was 100% intake all the time, which was the first they had seen in nearly 20 years.

My conclusion is: I think i belong as one of the X-men.

But seriously. I don't smoke, nor do i drink often. Yes, i do have the odd pint here and there, but when you're driving too its difficult to find the time to drink. I think that by not drinking or smoking made my recovery so fast.

My eating is back to normal, and i'm eating snacks as we speak. BUT... not bad snacks, its all fruit seriously i'm doing well.

My friends have been incredible and to all the people that have sent me their love, thank you.

ANYWAY! it looks like i might have a camera FINALLY. I am so excited, and my photoshoot is soooooooon. Thats going to be an experiance and i hope to get some really good shots with the man i'm going with. He's promised to take my around the norfolk coast on a nice day with my mum. I think its going to really benifit my current understanding of cameras, and how they work. And also how to take a really stunning photo.

My work will all be displayed when its ready, along with this new watermark i'm trying to work on. I'm trying to look a little more "professional" as they say *laughs* i think it should be quite nice, its just working with photoshop that seems to be proving difficult.

Well... i've certainly written a little too much for you all to read but i hope you have.

Sorry for any spelling mistakes but i don't care right now about then understanably.

Night, i am off to sleep.
