Welcome!
If this is your first time visiting our fine club let me explain what we are about. This is a club dedicated to teaching others about photography. We submit photos and explain the techniques we used to take the photos in a review. So come join our club and learn something new about photography!

Joining
To join the club all you have to do is send the club a not with the topic of "join," add us to your friends list, and our name or icon to your journal. We also have a stamp you can put in your journal if you are a subscriber. Anybody can join the club. You can join to teach, learn, or just to support the club.

Submitting
Once you are a member of the club, you can start submitting your photographs. You can submit any photograph that you like as long as you think you can teach something about photography from it. You can submit these photos by sending us a note with the link to the photo, some technical info, and a review that teaches the viewers.

These reviews need to include technical information such as type of camera, lens used, aperture, shutter speed, or any other equipment you used that helped you. The review should tell how you took the photo not why and not explaining what is in the photo. Explain in detail the techniques you used that got you the results you got; so other could take this info and reproduce a photo of the same style. You could also explain in detail rules of photography that are used in the photo. These could include compsition, lighting techniques, color, IR photography or anything else ranging from beginers to advanced photography.

Well, our Lomo Contest is winding down. As of now, we only have two submissions, one for each category. If nobody else submits, they will be the winners, and there will be no voting. You can still submit until Dec. 15th if you wish. After that I will be announcing and featuring the winners.

Our poll showed that you guys want our next contest to be "alternative Beauty" This will be a really interesting competition to see what everybody comes up with. This topic is up for interpretation whether it is in regards to people, places, or things. The only thing is that it can not be something that is considered traditionally beautiful. Try to find beauty in unusual places.

Also I still need questions to ask of our featured artist ~roseonthegrey so be sure to go to her page and check out her photos then comment back here. I need to ask these of her soon if you guys want to learn.

If you could, go check out her gallery and techniques. Commenting on the journal would be the best way of telling me what you want to know more about. If I dont get any suggestions, then I will just pick because i know i have questions for her. Man I am so excited about this, how about you?!?!

Come on guys, how is the club supposed to hold a contest when nobody submits anything? We only have one submission for the contest as of now and it is for the category with no review. We need some with a review to give some pointers to the future lomographers. This can not be the trend for all contests or else there is no point in having them. All the clubs have already offered features in their journal and that is some great publicity. And for all of you who are thinking "i would love to participate but dont have a special camera" remember that it is not the camera that makes a photo a lomo photo. The photos just need to be playful, colorful, odd, and random. You can use special processes or just have a really colorful photo with weird cropping. All I wanted is for you guys to have fun. Dont worry if you dont know exactly what lomography is, just go out and try it, hey you might win! We still have a little more time to shoot for the contest, i know i have to finish up the role of film in my camera (ps that is also a good way to get lomo pictures: take photos with expired film, that always has interesting results) just get creative and do not worry about failing or even the rules. The only rule to lomography is there is no rules!!

Also for the new artist series, i have contacted `larafairie and will hopefully get a reply from her. I would also like to have some other options so if there is any user on DA that you want a tutorial/review from give me their screen name and I will contact them. Also I need some questions/ topics you guys would like to learn about/get explained. Both of these can be left as comments at the bottom of the journal, or send the club a note. If we get good turnout I will publish a news article for it to get more press for the club and hopefully get other artists on board.

Shoutboard: on the shoutboard now i have been putting the submissions forthe month, however i really want to show some more of your guys' work. So if you have a photo you really want to show off and can absolutly not think of a review to write for it, you can submit it over notes with "shoutboard submission" and i will put it up along with your name. for now lets put a limit of 2 photos per person and we might see about that later. I am looking forward to seeing your guys's work!

Also guys there have not been hardly any submissions to the gallery for a while! Remember it does not have to be a very in depth review, but it should tell how you took the photo. Dont worry if there is already a photo on that topic in the gallery. Not everybody looks at them all, and our way of explaining it may make more sense to some people than the other one.

so, in the spirit of lomography, we are going to have our own contest. Lomography is largly ignored when it comes to classes and workshops so I am going to dedicate these next few months to lomography! There will be two different categories to this contest:

1. Lomo Photos with out a Review:
This category is open to anybody who wants to experiment with the technique, but do not have enough knowledge to explain it. This part will be judged by you guys voting on your favorite photo. These photos will be featured in our journal at the end of the contest.

2. Lomo Photos With a Review
This category is for somebody who has a lomo photo and can explain how they did it, or just how you get a great lomo photo. The reviews can be any subject, its up to you! I will be the one judging this portion of the contest and it will be judged on how helpful your review is. All the photos with a review will be posted in our gallery, just like any other submission!

Ideas for change:
Have commenting open on the deviations so artists can ask the submitter questions about the art work. The only problem with this is that it will reduce the amount of traffic that goes to the artists page. However, it would help me see what you guys want more reviews on.

We will be starting up the features again because i have cracked down and bought the club a subscription. I found that we are not a very effective club without one.

We will be listing the contests of our affiliates and featuring the winners in our journals. You guys are allowed to participate in the contests and may even win!! Feel free to offer any prizes that you want to the clubs because they are always looking for generous people.

Now I want to know what you guys want from the club. What do you want to see change? Do you want more tutorials or contests? please leave a comment or note the club if it is really detailed.

Since we do have a subscription again and i have never had one, I need somebody to come up with a css design for the journal because i think the old one went away. That will be our first contest!!

While feeling and inspiration are important to understanding a photograph, we want more. A good question to ask yourself before submitting a review is "Can I learn anything from this?" Please understand that if a review does not meet our requirements that we will not post it in our gallery, and will probably ask you to rewrite it. Please understand that you are not obligated to rewrite the review if you dont want to. Remember this club is for fun! There is not limit to submissions for now, however if we get spammed by your photos we will put one on the club.

so with summer upon us i am finding it very hard to update the club on a regular basis. i am not just sitting at my computer anymore like i was when i was away at school. so if anybody has a more boring summer ahead of them (or just want to do me an awesome favor) i would like to have some more admins so that the club can still be alive without me sitting at home all day. if not then i am going to have to say i might update it once a week, or maybe once a month. summer is busy busy and there are not computers everywhere. all i want to do is sit outside, not inside. so send my account a note because i check that more frequently than this one. --> ~MarshmallowsYAY

*EDIT*
To promote submissions, I was thinking of adding a new mini-contest to the club. Now every two weeks I will choose the featured deviation of the club to be the submission with the best review, and that is the most helpful. This way you guys will get a little more publicity for your photos, and your review will help more people. I am going to start this on next Tuesday, April 14th. I will make a journal and put the submission for that week up. Good luck, and get shooting ^^


Contest Ideas
So with the club back up and running, I was thinking of hosting a contest! However I have no idea of what the contest should be about. Our last mini-contest was a detailed review of IR photography, and i was thinking maybe we could do something like that again. So I am asking you guys: is there any topic within photography that you want a more detailed review about, or something that is just so out there and weird that we have not even considered covering it? Leave a comment at the bottom of the journal with ideas and we will come up with the contest.

However it will be hard to feature the winners of the contest (let alone any member of the club) if we can not have thumbnails in our journal. I feel bad asking this, but can any of you guys buy the club a subscription? We would greatly appreciate the gesture and will feature the person who donates it in our next journal.

Also I want to thank you guys for supporting the club and making it everything that it is. Without you guys this club would be nothing. So thanks again for all the great submissions and reviews, and i hope you guys have learned something from them.

The review should tell how you took the photo not why and not explaining what is in the photo. Explain in detail the techniques you used that got you the results you got; so other could take this info and reproduce a photo of the same style. You could also explain in detail rules of photography that are used in the photo. These could include compsition, lighting techniques, color, IR photography or anything else ranging from beginers to advanced photography.

    After a long hiatus, we are alive again! I must personally apologize for the lack of action by this club, but i will now try to check it more often. However since my life will not stop being busy I will need some help! We are now taking applications for new admins to help keep the club up and running.     Welcome!
    If this is your first time visiting our fine club let me explain what we are about. This is a club dedicated to teaching others about photography. We submit photos and explain the techniques we used to take the photos in a review. So come join our club and learn something new about photography!

    Joining
    To join the club all you have to do is send the club a not with the topic of "join," add us to your friends list, and our name or icon to your journal. We also have a stamp you can put in your journal if you are a subscriber. Anybody can join the club. You can join to teach, learn, or just to support the club.

    Unacceptable reviews only explain what the photographer is feeling when he/she took the photo, and does not teach the viewer anything. While feeling and inspiration are important to understanding a photograph, we want more. A good question to ask yourself before submitting a review is "Can I learn anything from this?" Please understand that if a review does not meet our requirements that we will not post it in our gallery, and will probably ask you to rewrite it. Please understand that you are not obligated to rewrite the review if you dont want to. Remember this club is for fun! There is not limit to submissions for now, however if we get spammed by your photos we will put one on the club.

    As I had barely any reaction to the tutorial-idea, I've decided to write a tutorial using my own photos, which is probably the best anyway. It will be published in SNAP-magazine, and I'll put it online as soon as it's finished.

    Using drops as lenses seems to be one of Sortvind's specialties. He keeps the background blurry but in the drop everything is sharp, he experimented with different backgrounds, and has some very good result with this technique. Apart form that he's also a good micro- and animal photographer.

    This is a unique opportunity for one of you guys!
    I'm planning on making a tutorial on the post processing of an portrait photo (colors, sharpness, flawless skin,...). On the main while I would like to give one of you guys the opportunity to get a picture post processed by me.
    The picture will of course be credited and be exposed at the club and my own gallery.
    So what do I need?
    I need the raw image (camera raw, not Photoshop raw) of a portrait photo (not nature/architecture/animals/...). The images needs to be of a high resolution.
    I will than post process it and explain every step I take in the tutorial.

    Sounds like fun?
    Send a note to *CoffinFairy with a link to the small size photo you'd like to see post processed by me (doesn't need to be on deviantart, can be on photobucket or anything else as well).
    I will than make a selection and post process one of two images, depending on the quality of the submissions. I'll then need the RAW-file so that I can get started.

Looking for a new administrator

Since I have to work on my final schoolproject, I don't have a lot of time to spend on this club anymore. And I don't want to leave all the work to be done by ~MarshmallowsYAY alone.
So we're searching for a new administrator to help us rund the club.
The administrator should handle new notes; joining members and submissions. If he/she feels like it, he/she can also feature members in the journal, but this is not a must.

Our mini contest over infrared photography is now over and the winner is =ensophoto he wrote us up a great overview of infrared photography and hopefully some of you learn something and will maybe even try it out your self!

This is only a brief introduction to the world of Infrared Photography, but hopefully it is enough to get some of you interested.




The main difference between Infrared and visible spectrum film is handling & exposure. You have to keep it cold and load and unload in dark or near dark as the felt on the canister will not block all of the light this film is sensitive to, and the film base has no fog protection. I have seen older cameras that leak IR light and will fog this film when closed, and if your newer camera has IR detection for film it will fog as well. Once you remove the film, again in darkness, it MUST be kept in a black film can. Static will also leave these really neat little lightning bolts all over your image, so care must be taken in this area as well.

The ASA (ISO) changes with the amount of infrared light. So you shoot differently in morning than noon and again in evening. When you do shoot bracketing ±2 stops is a must, even if you have an idea of exposure from previous tests. One month difference in time can have an impact on the amount of IR light that reaches the film.

Focus is another detail that must be watched for. Infrared light focuses slightly ahead of the visible spectrum. Many lenses have a correction build into them to compensate for this. My Nikon lenses have a red dot.

B&W infrared processes just like normal film, my choice to keep the fine grain has always been in D-76. I have never used t-max, but times can be found. It is a fine grained film that can easily be enlarged.

I did a lot at night with a gel over my flash. I used a wratten 87 gel, but it is almost opaque to the eye. I paid $75 for my 3x3 in 1988 so who knows what the cost is now. I did some with the gel over the lens, but it was not as much fun & hard to focus. A #25 can be used with satisfactory results, particularly with vegetation, this is the commonly found image.

Color Infrared is a whole different ball game. Last I heard Kodak was the only place that could process it, in the recommended AR-5 process, however, E-6 can be used but images will be higher in contrast and appear more saturated. Unless they have changed in the last 15 years Kodak will only do AR-5 when they have enough to do a run, so it could wait in their freezer for a while.

if you do not want to try the film you can also do it with some digital cameras. I have only begun experimenting with this. You want to see if it works?? point your TV remote at your camera and push a button. You might be surprised by what you see blinking at you. I have not done anything digital, but my understanding is that you really need the filter to do this.

Try some infrared photography and find out what ordinary objects look like in a truly different light.

Photomosaic


While I was reading a photography magazine, I saw an article on photomosaics. I though this would be usefull to mention in this journal. Although it is a very common used technique, it is always nice to try this with your own pictures.
So I'll just explain here how you need to do this:

1. Download the free software at http://andreaplanet.com/andreamosaic/ and install it.

2. Make a folder on your computer with the images you would like to use for your mosaic. I suggest not to take the original sizes, as that is way to big for the programm. I resized my pictures to 500px at the longest side.

3. Open your programm, you'll see a button "create collection", click that and save it in the folder you just made. It will automatically add al the images in that folder. (when done, click close)

4. You can enter some specifications for the mosaic (size, tiles,...), but I won't go into detail about that. For your first time, just go with the standard specifications. (you can play with them later :)).

5. Click 'add images', and add the images you would like to turn into a mosaic. then press 'create the mosaics'.

Infrared Photography
Sometimes in this club we get special requests on reviews because some of the members have questions. This time we have a question about infrared photography, so I am asking any of you who know about the subject to write a review and/or a tutorial. We can have more than one review, but I will be picking the best ones. You could call it a mini contest where the prizes are small: you get your review posted, and featured in the clubs journal and my journal (more journal prizes features donated would be appreciated. Like I said before we can have more than one and it can be explaining what it is, how to do it (with both film and digital) and maybe some tips or tricks for those of us who have never had a chanse to try it out yet. We will have this challenge open until the 1st of the year and then post the best submissions on the 3rd of January. If you have any questions you can note me (~MarshmallowsYAY) with the subject of Infrared Photography. Hope you all have fun and will learn something when the submissions are revieled.

How can you become a Member?

What can I submit?
Anything as long as it is photography.
(minimal digital edits like color, sharpness,... are acceptable though)

How can I submit my works?
By sending us a note.
Please include the link to your work and the specifications (camera, lens, shutterspeed, light,... anything you can tell us about your work so people can learn from it) Usually you can find this information in Details next to your description under Picture...
Apart from that we need you to write a review on your work, so that people can learn from it. Describe your idea, what you had in mind, and how you managed to work it out with your gear,... why you used a certain angle, composition,... what feeling your work is supposed to give the spectator,... When your review is done, read it and ask yourself the question "Will people be able to learn from this?" If the answer is no, the review won't fit in our club..
IMPORTANT
If the review doesn't satisfy our needs (doesn't explain how the picture is taken, doesn't learn people something,...) we can not submit this in our gallery. We're trying to reply to bad reviews, but as we are very busy we might just skip those submissions in the future. Please take a look at the examples and keep in mind that this club is for other people to learn from, not another club to just expose your deviantions.

Is there a limit to the submissions?
For the moment there is no limit, you can send in as much works as you like.

What about the copyrights?
Your name (real if you give it to us, devname otherwise) will be included in the description, cleary mentioning that you own the copyright on your work.
You can however (and I strongly recommend this) use a watermark on your works. You can find a tutorial on visible watermarks here.
