It's pretty nifty and all.

However, for the past AGES we have also provided a usable service for people who can't afford a subscription! Isn't that nice of us!

In fact, we're so proud of providing this free service that we've taken the liberty of cramming adverts into every concievable space! Even those ones that expand when you roll over them (sure it's easy to avoid them on 1650x1080, but we made them extra annoying, just for you notebook users!) and those ones that SHOUT FUCKING SHIT AT YOU, too!

And, just to be extra cuntish, we've linked the 'quit' cross in the corner of some of these ads to the subscription page! Whoops! ^_^;;

So, go ahead and get a subscription, not because you want the extra features, but because you CAN'T FUCKING NAVIGATE THE SITE ANYMORE WITHOUT BEING VISUALLY RAPED TIME AND TIME AGAIN BY ADVERTISEMENTS FOR SHIT THAT NOBODY ON HERE WILL EVER WANT OR NEED.

/sarcasm

But seriously, I wish they'd stop sticking ads on this site to develop new user interfaces that NOBODY WANTS OR NEEDS. It was DELICIOUS when I joined in 2005. There was NO NEED for change. At all.

IF YOU DO SQUEE EVERYTIME THERE IS A NEW FUCKING THEME, THEN YOU TOO ARE A CUNTBAG.

Love you all.

I sure do draw a lot of stuff on my course, but it's mostly shit like diagrams and renderings of supremely interesting things like seats and tram layouts.

AS INTERESTING AS THIS IS, it destroys my desire to draw other, more interesting things, such as idea I have for short comics and the need to draw Russian Hat Girl for the 700th time. The problem lies in how I draw each genre of crap.

FREXAMPLE - If I draw an interior of a tram, or something with dimensions on it and then move on to draw people, the people usually end up looking all angular and inaccurate.

The same applies the other way around. Trams come out with boobs. Buses have thick-rimmed glasses and interiors have short skirts. Mmm.

However, I am soon to FINISH this term, and escape the tedium of drawing and re-drawing the same thing over and over in an attempt to get it looking straight. I'm really trying to push my use of reference in my drawings, too. Doodling and all is super cool, but I can't use my charactures in my technical drawings because they just don't fit.

That sure would explain why the most recent incarnations of Russian Hat Girl look like a half-Chinese 20 year old girl. Ho hum.

So, I promise something soon.

In other news, I'm to come back to Suffolk for Christmas in a week or so, and thus escape the black-hole esque arsehole of the world that is Coventry. I'll admit, it doesn't seem so bad when you're there, but as soon as you leave the damn place, you remember how nice everywhere else is. I also want to make a decent effort to visit Neil before he FUCKING LEAVES ME.

Oh, my parents are drunk again. It's a 50's workers' house made for a family, presumably from when Britain actually had an economy. So when that went to shit, the house was left to be lived in by students. Brilliant.

Sketchpad is currently hiding under boxes in my room, which I refuse to unpack until the necessity arises. I've been drawing on things like folders and files at work, and was told off for it today by my boss. Apparently I need to 'cut it out'.

However, I will probably scan one of these in at some point for kicks.

My main pc is also in a state of malaise, having just been given the motherfuck of all upgrades. Drivers need installing, programs need re-installing, bleh blah.

2 other guys here draw cars, so I'll have a better environment for that, but only one of those guys draws people, and he rips the FUCK out of Range Murata and like artists. His stuff looks cool, but I frown upon people who refuse to even TRY to create something by themselves :I

The other guy is Bulgarian, and I fucking love him. He mostly only draws cars and similar, but his attitude can only be described as relentless. He strives for absolute perfection, and whilst this is something I'm not too keen on, I admire it as an artistic trait :3

All the other guys are Motorsport Engineering students, and are hot in their own ways. Hopefully, we'll all avoid each other's fire and everything will work out well.

I'm not as much as a character artist as much as you other guys, but I'll give this a go, since we all agree the last survey sucked so hard.

1. When did you first acknowledge that you could draw well, or decided you wanted to learn to draw?
-I waaaaas.... around 12 (99&#039 when I realised that any sucker could put a comic up on the web. A webcomic, if you will. I wanted some of that action and started drawing characters.

2. Is there anything 'deviant' about your art, as the site's name would imply?
-I don't think so, what I draw is hardly groundbreaking or shockingly original. I deviate from fuck all.

3. A video game company has put you in charge of designing a lead character for a platformer title. What have you created?
-Hopefully something that doesn't follow the bollocks trend of most platformer games, crap like Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Jak and Daxter etc. Oh GOD, espcially not Jak and Daxter. None of that wacky character/comic foil shit. I'd like to create someone a bit darker.

4. You just found out a 12-year-old has been heavily referencing your characters, perhaps even tracing them. What do you do?
-Leave them be, I used to copy other people's characters when I was learning to draw.

5. Would you feel comfortable if your parents viewed your Deviantart gallery, or had it bookmarked?
-Fuck no.

6. Do you view your Deviantart account as your online professional/college portfolio? A site through which you seek critique/improvement? A social network? (All are valid.)
-I see my DA account as a way of showing the people who would care most about my work what I've been doing. If I lived in a big big house with these people, my DA account probably wouldn't exist.

7. What would it take to get you to draw porn? For those who already draw porn, why do you draw it?
-I'd like to have a much better grasp of anatomy before attempting any of that stuff. Right now, I don't think I'd ever be able to put two people together in anything close to an intimate pose.

8. You are hired to do illustration/graphic work for a company you've hated since you were a child. For example, someone who grew up a fan of DC comics and hates Marvel is offered a job working on one of Marvel's major titles. Do you turn the job down?
-I suppose I'll have to spin this question around to apply more to me. I guess it'd be the equivalent of being hired by an abysmally poor car company whose products are shunned by all. I would take up the position depending on the amount of freedom I was given to influence the work I was doing. If I were just being used as some pencil jockey, then no.

9. Do you like fan art? If so, what do you look for in fan work? What makes it 'art' for you?
-I like fan art to an extent. I like fan art where you can tell that it has been drawn by someone else, but not so that the character has been deformed beyond all recognition. A good example of what I would deem to be 'good' fan art would be Amanda and Neil's Yoko pic.

10. Everyone makes a big deal about 'style.' How do you define style?
-I guess when you can look at ANYTHING that one person has drawn, and still tell that it is their work. Even when Neil draws toasters and shit, I know it's him. That'd be my definition of one person's 'style'.

11. On a related note, how important is personal style for an artist? Should an artist's style be versatile, or would compromising their style to pander to a certain audience make them 'sell outs?'
-Fucking hell, this survey is getting tough. I think that artists should be as versatile as they can be. No matter what they draw, their style will still remain. If an artist puts their all into their work, the traits that make their work theirs will always shine through. I don't believe one would be able to 'force' a style successfully, or indeed dispose of it.

12. What would your ideal job as an artist/illustrator be?
-Draughtsman/concept designer at Alstom, or some other transport company.

13. How do you feel about Western/English-language comics being made to read right-to-left as opposed to the traditional left-to-right (like untranslated/unflipped manga)?
-There's no reason a Western comic should ever read right to left. The reason that manga reads right to left is because of the Japanese writing style. If someone creates a comic which reads right to left for no reason other than to be 'Japan-y' then they deserve to be whipped.

14. How important do you think school/training is for art/illustration?
-I think this would depend on the extent that the artist wants to continue their studies, also in the field t...

Something has been bothering me for quite some time now.

I'm into Anime, and its lower-framerate counterpart, Manga. Around 10 months ago, Neil told me to go and watch Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, which (after a while), I did. However, since then, I have found nothing new, or good to watch. One might say that I have hit a 'dry patch' (lool).

Anyway, dry patch, no new good anime, whatever. Now, at the local comic book store in Coventry (The Astral Gypsy - www.astralgypsy.com) there are 'anime evenings', which are held every month or so. The first one, which I attended late last year, was quite quiet, and relatively laid-back. There was a quiz, created by the awesome Al Davison, which myself and an older gentleman called 'Frank' won with equal scores. I came away from the evening feeling happy that I could once again connect with 3 or 4 other people regarding a genre of media that I thoughroughly enjoyed.

Fast forward to last night, I attended the same evening. Rather predictably, much like all other Anime and Manga events, this one had gained a good amount of popularity, and so it was filled with the generic Anime and Manga 'fanboys' and 'fangirls' (Neil knows exactly the kind of people I am describing).

I'm used to this, after over 8 years of 'Animaying it up', so I sat, and prepared myself for the quiz, created this time by one of the fanboys, by popular demand after the quizzes created by Al were deemed 'too difficult'.

Neither myself, nor the gentleman named Frank scored a single point. We spent the remainder of the evening talking about Pink Floyd, and how Frank once hitched a lift from one of the members of the band (to my adoration and glee).

Driving the 140 miles back home that evening (I was in Coventry doing work for the University :/ ), I sat with Justine in the car, listening to good ol' tunes and contemplated where I stood in the Animay community. Sure, there are people I can connect with over Anime and Manga with a 97% synchronisation rate, but this is by far with the minority of fans.

Both Neil and myself used to give 'Death Note' much slander, with our ' psuedo-Donny Cruise ' voices, however, since then, Neil has watched the series, and has reported good things. I still don't want to watch it, but I trust his judgement entirely. I suspect that I would get similar feedback with anime such as Bleetch and Narootoe, but I can't even pretend to be interested in them.

Do these new fans not 'get it'? Or, indeed, is it us who do not understand the mechanics of the modern Anime and Manga industry?

(One side note: I do not now, nor do I ever claim to be one of those people who were there 'at the beginning'. I started out by watching Cowboy Bebop on VHS, hardly an ancient show.)

Usually I would kindly tell whoever tags me to kindly fuck off, but I feel like it today. Aren't you people in for a lovely surprise, 6 strange facts about me.....that Neil and Jo probably already know perhaps maybe.

1: I was born in West Germany. That's right, it used to be split it two COME ON PEOPLE. Then I lived thereabouts until 1997. RAF Laarbruch, go wiki. Think I can speak German? Not fluently, and not at all in any situation that doesn't involve buying salami.

2: Sometimes my leg falls asleep WHILST I'M WALKING. And I just fall over, flop. It's quite rare, though and luckily it's never happened in public.

3: My dreams are super vivid most of the time, and once every couple of months I have a dream that I won't be able to distinguish from real life for most of the morning. An example of this was at uni last year. I had a dream Neil was fucking about with my computer, for some reason or another, most likely queuing up music to play. The he just started DELETING things. A LOT of things. As in; about 150GB of anime and sci-fi, 30GB of music and all my uni work. I then woke up. I refused to talk to him the following day, and when I did, I was a complete prat, all because he had deleted all my IMAGINARY dream-animu-porn on my IMAGINARY dream-hard drive.

4: I HATE being bested by ANYONE younger than me (even in fields that I don't even care about.) Example, 16 year old kids with more money than me. Do I give a toss? No. Does it annoy me to my bones and possibly even my liver? Yes.

5: I hate getting rid of broken things. I think that anything with any degree of complicity to it has a 'soul' and therefore must be sympathised with unless you're a Nazi, or Jeremy Clarkson. My Mum drove my Dad's Mondeo onto some rocks the other day, and I actually WINCED watching it. Same with things I own, like MP3 players. I have a broken Creative player that I can't bring myself to throw away, even though it's completely useless and will never work again.

6: I'm petrified of deep swimming pools, especially if it's quite small (on the surface). Not like 3 metres, or maybe even 4...just, like, diving pools. I was in one once I couldn't feel the bottom of, and when I looked under, it was 9 metres deep. That was scary.

And now to tag 6 others!

No!

EDIT: I might tag 6 others after breakfast. You watch out.

It's an update, yo. There hasn't really been all that many updates in THART because this year, we don't have the internet in our rooms at uni. Like before, it would take a second just to go 'ooh, pretty, DA, upload, end'. But now I have to go aaaaall the way across the street and I can't be bothered with that kind of inconvenience.

I felt I should probably update this, at least, since my ladyfriend has just uploaded a shit ton of very good photos. And if you haven't seen them yet, then THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING READING THIS STILL?
I'm finished at the cinema, now it's time for some me time. ME TIME.
For those of you who don't know, she's my ladyfriend. O: And she's gone. For a while. A long while.

Also, for the extreme few of you who actually come here, apologies for the no update for ages. My computer is in my room, and it doesn't actually have the internet, so everything that ends up on it has to be put on a usb stick and then dragged over here, where this craptacular piece of 20th century technology will try it's hardest to recognise the damned thing before crashing.

But I do have some crap coming, not really anything SPECTACULARITY but that stuff tends to happen more at uni.

This might be a journal not finished. Right now, I am typing on my computer, which has taken to having the stability of a bi-polar see saw. In Maya I am currently working on modeling the artilleryman from the Ice comic in 3D. Due to his shape, I kinda feel he deserves it. Also, I know the bus has little or no significance to anything EVER, but it was actually an excuse to practice drawing it for a storyboard that I might put up when it's finished.
