Products such as backpacks, action figures, and (of course) Fantastic Four Electronic Thing Hands & Feet© all promote the violence in this movie. Part of the description for this particular product is “…You can now… wallop crime…These massive foam hands will transform your hands into crime-fighting tools…” Admittedly, one might say that a small matter such as toys doesn’t create a violent individual. However, as author Tina L. Cheng states, “Viewing of violence on television has been associated in many previous studies with aggressive behavior…” One way that violent T.V. shows might affect us is through desensitization.
The most frightening possibility resulting from violent T.V. would be that one becomes desensitized, and starts to believe that violence is a normal part of life. If T.V. started to make us believe that violence was a normal method of solving problems, we would all be much more aggressive than we currently are. Those who watched excessive amounts of T.V. would probably be seem with weapons, and dull or excited expressions. Even though one could argue that a more personal violent history such as domestic violence could influence us, it has been proven through many studies that violence on T.V. does indeed affect out aggression levels. No matter how influential our TVs may seem, they are not the only form of media that affects us.
There are many songs that refer to television as the source of all violence. However there are cases in which a song has caused violence. One song, “Gloomy Sunday,” composed by Rezso Seress was reported to create feelings of suicide in a listener. More than twenty people reportedly killed themselves after listening to this song by themselves. While it is true that the facts seem a little far-fetched, and that any listener who killed themselves was probably emotionally instable, they are facts, and prove that the media can instill feelings of hostility in us. Therefore, T.V., and any form of media, can indeed kill us.
In our community today, we may question the influence of T.V. violence on our persons. Can something fictional truly cause a negative outlook on our minds? As studies have shown, TV violence can indeed lead to feelings of aggression, and violence. Therefore, TV violence does affect us, no matter how impossible it seems.
