At the beginning of the semester, we previewed a bunch of shows and did a vote on which 4 shows we would watch the whole semester. I showed up late that day and barely saw anything except for the last 3 previews.

One caught my eye. Something in the future with some kid riding around some city vandalizing stuff with an unlimited supply of basketballs while being chased by cops in robots. Oh, and apparently the NBA plays with robots, too. If anyone can tell me the name of that show, I'd be grateful.

Anyway, the 4 shows chosen were: Sengoku Basara, K-On, Bakemonogatari, and Umineko no Naku Koro ni.

Midterms have passed, so after watching 7 episodes of each show, I thought I'd give my take on each of them.

Sengoku Basara

I think Capcom owns this. From what I've seen, it takes place in feudal Japan with two warring groups having to team up in order to fight an even larger threat: the Demon King Nobunaga! (He's always Satan whenever I see him in fiction. I never read up on the guy, but I'm assuming the real Nobunaga was like Hitler or someone.)

Anyway, this one is the only ACTION anime that we watch. You know, the insane attacks (a dude freakin' fights with 3 swords in each hand, holding them with his fingers instead of his palms), and nuclear grade explosions. the kind of stuff that most people think of when you say "anime".

On the red team (watch the opening) there's some guy with tridents (I think) who constantly gets beat up by his boss when he says or does something rash or stupid. There's also a green ninja dude on their side.

On the blue team there's the guy with the swords named Masamune (yeah), he wears an eyepatch, so he's nicknamed the "One-Eyed Dragon" (obviously not intended for American audiences to make immature jokes about), his adviser is some guy, who clearly has some importance.

Neutral characters include some lady who controls her own army, and her female ninja side-kick (who's obviously exists for fanservice).

The Demon King has tons of minions, but the only important ones are some effeminate Sephiroth looking guy with a scythe, and the Demon Queen, who sports a MINIGUN!

The show is ok. It's nothing that stands out, but it's watchable. Only thing that bothered me was when one guy suddenly appeared inside a mech suit (!!!) but afterwards, I accepted it.

It's art style (as with most anime), is incredibly bland. You could swap cells from this with MANY shows and you'd have to be told the difference. The faces aren't anything original, but at least you can seperate who from who within the show.

K-On

I've heard about this show. Never gave it any thought. It's about some school girls and their band. That's kinda it.

There's the leader, the violent one (who hates horror movies), the quiet one, and the loud one (who pesters the violent one).

I don't care for this, really. Sure, it's got some funny parts, but I honestly don't care about any of the characters, nor their music (which is bearable).

However, this show has an art style that stands out while still following anime tropes. That said, this show really shows the sin most anime's share: EVERYONE HAS THE SAME EXACT FACE! The only way to tell the difference is their hair! The only character remotely distinguished is the blond girl, thanks to her thick eyebrows.

Bakemonogatari

Now this show, I hate.

It's a supernatural themed show about some dude who heals like wolverine thanks to at one time being a vampire. He doesn't really have any goals. Insane stuff just seems to happen to him. In the first episode, he discovered his classmate weighs as much as a sheet of paper, and in order to keep him quiet, she threatens him with ALOT of sharp school supplies (So you weight as much as styrofoam, so what? It's odd, sure, but is it really something that serious). In the end of the confrontation, she uses a stapler on the inside of his mouth. (The stapler suddenly becomes a motif for the entire show.) Later on, they become a couple (!!!) even though she still threatens him with more sharp objects from time to time.

The show doesn't really seem to have a direction, really, but that's not the main reason I hate it. I hate it for it's constant cuts. I'd love to find a scene where we don't have jump cuts, cuts to photographs or objects, cuts to a single colored screen with text on it usually of a single word that only flashes for one second, or a two second close up of an eye for no decent reason. Anyway, apparently they started a spin-off called Brotherhood.

I don't get it. What's the point? "Hey, the awesome show ended 5 years ago! How's about now we make a spin-off that answers the age old question: What if FMA had FILLER!?"

That's all it is! Inbetween stuff that does nothing to the plot. The original show was smart enough not to have any, so why make a another show that's only means of existing are as such?

I guess it's just for the fans, as we're the only people that would make any sense of the episodes of this show (Each episode takes place at a certain time in the original plot and jumps around with each episode). I must admit it's nice seeing familiar characters again, even though I know there's no point to it. But I hate watching stuff subbed. It makes me feel like a weeaboo.

I've barely been watching TV for months, but this is kinda cool. While I don't think Mark Hamill will ever be bested, it's always good to see every Batman property try out their own take on classic villains. This one's obviously inspired by the old days (I think the entire show itself is, actually).

Speaking of which, remember the Joker from The Batman? That's probably the most original design I've ever seen for him. It was very different.

I thought NO one would even know about that song. I was planning on using it myself eventually, just because I didn't think anyone would recognize it.

I'll explain it: That's the boss music (2nd version, to be exact) from Maximum Carnage, a single player beat-em-up in the 16-bit days. It was based around the Spiderman saga of the same name. (Carnage is the cheapest final boss ever made, thankfully they give you the end credits before you fight him.)It was also one of the few games with colored cartridges (red, like Doom was).

However, this isn't where the thread title comes in. I can just wait for an opening which will usually happen soon.

Anyway, I'm looking through the course book and notice Drawing for Storyboarding. I could take that! But WAIT... If I take that, I can take Life Drawing in the next semester! If I would take Drawing II, I'd have to take Drawing III before I get into Life drawing! So apparently, those two classes are essentially condensed in DfS (yeah, I'm gonna do abbreviations).

But STILL, ItSA is only neccesary for Comic Book Scripting. The real catalyst class needed to go into the major is Drawing for Sequential Art, which only requires LD.

In other news, my younger bro forgot to type in his voucher for the Resistance 2 beta.

Also, finished chapter one of Dead Space. I need to learn how to aim at limbs, as it feels too unconventional to me (I always aim around the neck).

Also, how many people said that Resident Evil 4 was actually scary back when it came out? They're crazy. The games before 4...Now those were sorta scary. (Crimson Heads take the cake). It's only scary when it's hard to defend yourself. RE4's ammo friendliness removed any scary...sans those Regenerators. They were awesome.

Dead Space hasn't really scared me yet. That one part before you get a weapon (you know what), that had me laughing and yelling.

Seriously, what're Issac's feet made of, cement?

Does anybody know the name to a black and white era horror movie (I guess) centering around some guy who had his face frozen in a very huge (and creepy) smile upon viewing his father's corpse when he was trying to rob it of certain files? I remember seeing it back in the 90's on AMC, but I don't think I ever heard the name to it.

I've only been to two classes so far, but I've learned a few things:

1. Georgia is an oven. I can't go outside without feeling like I'm melting!

2. GPS's are stupid. I got lost yesterday trying to get back from the mall (which apparently closes at 7 on Sundays) because my exit got closed off and the GPS had no idea what to do.

3. Everything takes longer than expected. I was late to both of my classes today because I went to one office trying to get something done, which said to go to another one for what I needed to do, then got told that the FIRST office was where I needed to go! ALSO: Got lost each trek. ALSO 2: I walked the whole way. Ended up 10-15 minutes late.

Then I was late to my second class by over 45 minutes when I was stuck in line for over an hour and a half just to buy supplies I needed for my homework. And apparently, last year was worse!

ALSO: My nickname should be Sweatin' Ceaser.

Nother' ALSO: I've said it once, and I'll say it again, "The best pizzas are local."

Isn't History supposed to have shows about REAL stuff? Like Hellen Keller, ect?

At first, it was about how technology has advanced to the point that most of Wayne's gadgets are no longer fantasy. Ok, no problem there. But immediately afterward, they have one taking about his psyche and motivations. They had psychologists discussing it and everything. What kind of crap IS this? Why are they discussing a fictional character on an EDUCATIONAL channel?

I still watched it. Made me want to see the movie, but then I remembered my aversion to theater popcorn and spending money on something besides food that doesn't make me feel like a pile of DQ treats afterward.

I talk about food alot, don't I? I'm already laughing at what you readers must think I look like.

I was gonna buy another Hellboy book over at Barnes-and-Nobles today, and two things just messed with me. When did they start making hardcover collections? Oh well, too late for that, I guess. Then another thing got me. All the normal books they had in stock have freakin' "Now a major motion picture!"-type mini advertising crap sticker slapped on the cover. I DON'T CARE! Everyone should know that already! It's not like it has Psychonauts level advertising! Now if I bought one, I'd have to scratch off that trash and end up with glue residue on the cover!!

So I'll just wait till the movie's gone from theaters to buy another Hellboy, but at least I picked up Scott McCloud's "Making Comics", probably leagues more worth it.
